UP Warriorz have finally opened their account in WPL 2026 following three successive losses, by beating former winners and star-studded Mumbai Indians in Navi Mumbai on Thursday (Jan 15). Led by Harleen Deol’s heroics with the bat, UP completed the run chase with 11 balls and seven wickets remaining. While UP captain Meg Lanning talked about positives from this win and feeling content about the team’s performance thus far, Mumbai’s Harmanpreet Kaur felt her team was at least 20 shy of a par first-inning score here. UP won the toss and elected to field first. Following a shaky start, UP picked three wickets inside 13 overs, including removing Mumbai’s captain Harmanpreet on 16. England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt was the sole star for Mumbai, slamming a fifty, with Nicola Carey also contributing with a 20-ball 32. Mumbai posted 161 for five. UP began cautiously before losing both openers in one over, just after the Powerplay. That, however, brought Phoebe Litchfield and Harleen Deol to the crease, the pair that did all the damage and helped the Warriorz clinch a clinical win. Harleen remained unbeaten on 64 off 29 balls, hitting 12 fours, while Chloe Tryon smashed a quickfire unbeaten 27 off 11.
Here is what both captains said –
Harmanpreet Kaur – “I felt 180 or something (the par score), which we were looking for because we knew batting first is not easy on this track. But I think we did recently well in the powerplay. We didn't lose the wicket, but unfortunately, runs were not enough on the board, but later on, I think Nat and Nic put us in a better situation. “But I think credit goes to Harleen the way she batted today. Yeah, I mean, chasing is always better when dew is there.” Further praising the opposition, Harmanpreet said, “I think they did decently well because a lot of dew was there, bowlers not, you know, gripping well, but I think even the score was not, you know, enough on the board. So, I think, I think they bowled decently well, yeah,” she added. The winning captain, Lanning, said, “Throughout the first three games, there's still been a lot of positives. We've put together some good cricket, but probably just not as consistent as we would have liked. I think tonight was an excellent performance, bouncing back from last night to be able to beat Mumbai, who are an excellent team. So, yeah, very happy. (on them being on a losing streak).”

The growth of T20 cricket continues to amaze the naysayers. The introduction of a new rule in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), named 'designated batter and fielder', is already making headlines. So, what is this new rule about and when will it be introduced? Here are all the details. The BBL’s new rule, adapted from baseball, could see some of the game’s biggest names and hitters extending their stay in the league. Contemplated by the BBL for a few summers now, the ‘designated batter and fielder’ rule would permit all participating teams to pick a player who would be allowed to bat without being required to field. This rule could help certain BBL veterans prolong their league careers; for instance, Adelaide Strikers’ record run-getter, Chris Lynn, or Perth Scorchers star and Australia white-ball captain Mitchell Marsh could be used as ‘designated batters’, allowing them to bat and avoid straining themselves in the field at the same time. Also read | 'Mohammad Rizwan should leave Big Bash League': Kamran Akmal suggests Pak batter Such a rule, where each team can pick one player outside of their selected playing XI to come out and bat (without being required to field), could also see Australian internationals, playing all formats, like Travis Head, continue their association with the country’s most followed cricket league. "They also might be worried about picking up an injury while they're in the field, which is another big part of it. "And what this tournament doesn't want is to have these guys not playing, especially at this stage of the tournament when the big games are coming around. We all want to be seeing the best players playing, so if this rule helps that and keeps the longevity up, then that's great,” he added. Meanwhile, the designated batters and fielders would not be allowed to bowl, but a designated fielder could play as a wicket-keeper. If a team decides against choosing a designated batter for a game, they will play their standard playing XI, meaning the rule is not mandatory for each team to follow in each game.

Bangladesh Cricket crisis deepens as BCB has sacked director M Nazmul Islam on Thursday (Jan 15), relieving him of all duties (also as the chairman of the finance committee) amid demands from the cricketers, who boycotted BPL 2026’s game number 26, scheduled the same day. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), in a press release, announced the decision to sack Nazmul over his controversial public remarks against his country’s cricketers. In match 7 of WPL 2026 between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, middle-order batter Harleen Deol on Wednesday (Jan 14) became only the second player in WPL history to be retired out, after Gujarat Giants’ Ayushi Soni, who was taken off a day earlier against Mumbai Indians. Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has suggested that Mohammad Rizwan pull out of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) after the batter was asked to retire out in a recent game against Sydney Thunder. Playing for Melbourne Renegades on Monday (Jan 12), Rizwan was asked to retire out after a low strike rate. The incident quickly went viral, with a few trolling the former Pakistan captain.
Akmal suggests that Rizwan pull out
“We have spoken at length on various shows and on YouTube about how Babar and Rizwan need to improve their strike rates. What happened to Rizwan has not only led to mockery across the world but has also created a sense of humiliation. Some people are even saying that Rizwan should leave the league and return home,” Akmal said while speaking on GTV Sports. “During the first season of the IPL, Younis Khan was kept on the bench while playing alongside you for the Rajasthan Royals. He famously said, ‘I am the captain of Pakistan; I will not sit on the bench. You must send me back with respect.’ We have seen players stand up for themselves like that,” added Akmal. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes Having scored 26 off 23, the batter’s strike rate was not fit for the hour and was asked to retire out. Akmal suggests that Rizwan pull out “We have spoken at length on various shows and on YouTube about how Babar and Rizwan need to improve their strike rates.
