Teamsters Union poised to endorse 2024 presidential candidate after meeting with VP Harris

The 1.3 million-member union ‘Teamsters’ may announce that they are going to support a candidate in the 2024 US presidential elections, on Wednesday, after the meeting with the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris on Monday. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said in an interview that the results of the opinion polls, along with other factors, will be presented before the union’s executive board and then a decision will be made.

Arguably, the most important step made by the Teamsters in the course of the endorsement period is the over half an hour working leadership meeting with Harris. In January the union also interviewed Republican candidate, Donald Trump. O’Brien stressed the need to make a decision pointing out, “We can’t put this off any further. ”

The very influential union of workers the Teamsters are thinking very hard over what decision they should take with regard to their endorsement. Most large unions support Harris and that includes the United Auto Workers as well the AFL-CIO that encompasses 12. 5 million workers. On the other hand the Teamsters have been less consistent and at times have endorsed Republicans in previous elections.

O’Brien had also frowned upon Trump for his stand on striking workers which made it rather difficult for the union to embrace his support. As much as poll was identified by O’Brien as playing a big role, the union needs to work for all, including Democrats, Republican, and independent members of the union.

The endorsement could be decisive in the swing states of Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania that boast massive union populations. O’Brien seemed to suggest that the Teamsters are actively exploring all of its strategies and the ripple effect of their support.

Speaking at the meeting, Harris further affirmed her support for the union employees to push for legislation that provides for union formation as well as dealing with union busting. The discussion also referred the ongoing battle that the Teamsters have for recognition of delivery drivers at Amazon in Queens, New York, to exercise their rights to other contract negotiations.

The Teamsters, founded in 1903, have a history of endorsing Democrats such as Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama, but have also backed Republicans in earlier elections. The forthcoming endorsement will mark a crucial moment in the union’s political strategy for the 2024 race.
