Nissan shares soar 21% as activist investor Effissimo takes stake

Nissan Motor shares surged as much as 21% on Tuesday after it was disclosed that activist investor Effissimo Capital Management had taken a significant stake in the struggling car maker.

According to a regulatory filing made on Monday, the Cayman Islands-registered ECM Master Fund, which is affiliated with Effissimo, held a 2.5% stake in Nissan as of the end of September. This development has sparked speculation about potential changes and reforms that the activist investor may push for within the company.

Nissan, in a statement, acknowledged the new shareholder and expressed its appreciation for "existing and new shareholders that support and believe in the future potential of Nissan." The company's shares closed the trading day on Tuesday up 12.8% at 415.8 yen.

The news comes at a crucial time for Nissan, as the automaker grapples with a sales slump in key markets like China and the United States. Last week, the company announced a plan to cut 9,000 jobs and reduce its global manufacturing capacity by 20%, while also slashing its annual profit outlook by a staggering 70%.

These challenges have taken a toll on Nissan's share price, which hit a four-year low on Friday following the release of its disappointing earnings results. The entry of Effissimo, a renowned activist investor, has now injected a newfound sense of optimism among investors, who are hoping for potential changes that could drive the company's turnaround.

Shareholder activism has been gaining traction in Japan in recent years, with both international and domestic investors increasingly demanding that companies improve their corporate governance and capital allocation practices. This trend has been further bolstered by regulatory guidance, which has encouraged firms to be more responsive to shareholder concerns.

Effissimo's move into Nissan is seen as a significant development in this broader shift. The Singapore-based investment firm, co-founded by former colleagues of renowned activist investor Yoshiaki Murakami, has a reputation for taking substantial stakes in underperforming companies and pushing for strategic and operational changes.

Industry analysts suggest that Effissimo's involvement could lead to a reevaluation of Nissan's current restructuring plans, as well as potential changes to its leadership and governance structures. The activist investor's presence is also likely to put pressure on the company to improve its financial performance and capital allocation decisions, potentially leading to a more shareholder-friendly approach.

The impact of Effissimo's stake in Nissan will be closely watched by both the automotive industry and the broader Japanese corporate landscape. As a prominent example of the growing influence of shareholder activism in the country, this development could serve as a catalyst for other struggling Japanese firms to take their investors' concerns more seriously and prioritise value creation for all stakeholders.
