2025 BMW M5 breaks cover with V8 plug-in-hybrid drivetrain

The wait is over, the all-new 2025 BMW M5 has arrived, and it's a beast unlike any M5 before it. It boasts the most horsepower ever offered in an M5, but it also shoulders the burden of being the heaviest.

The iconic M5 badge now signifies a 727PS plug-in hybrid powertrain. This formidable system combines a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with a potent electric motor. The result? A 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds and a limited top speed of 155 mph (190 mph with the M Driver's Package).

An additional perk of the hybrid setup is the ability to drive in electric mode for an estimated 25 miles, offering a silent and emission-free motoring experience. Its electric motor draws power from an 18.6kWh battery pack that also enables the M5 to have an impressive electric-only driving range.

The new M5 offers a variety of drive modes to suit your needs. Comfort prioritises efficiency, while Sport and Sport Plus modes provide a more engaging driving experience. For the ultimate M5 experience, drivers can select the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes, which optimise the powertrain for maximum performance and enhance cooling for track use.

These top-tier modes also allow drivers to switch the all-wheel-drive system to rear-wheel drive for a more "unfiltered performance experience" and increased control through corners. Additionally, an electronically controlled rear differential lock optimises power distribution for improved handling.

Stopping power comes courtesy of standard six-piston callipers and 16.1-inch discs up front, with single-piston callipers and 15.7-inch discs at the rear. Carbon ceramic brakes are also available for an even higher level of performance.

The M5's bespoke chassis goes beyond stiffer springs. It features a model-specific five-link rear axle with strengthened components and a double-wishbone front axle for exceptional handling and stability. Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers allows drivers to fine-tune the car's ride to their preferences.

Visually, the new M5 retains its signature muscular stance with a wider body and a redesigned front fascia featuring prominent vents. Quad exhaust tips at the back complete the aggressive look. While nine standard colours are available, BMW Individual offers a wider range of colours for a truly personalised touch.

The elephant in the room? The 2025 M5 comes in at a hefty 5,390 pounds – the heaviest M5 ever produced. Despite its weight, initial test drives on the track have been positive. However, how this weight translates to everyday driving remains to be seen.
