Polls opened in several US states Tuesday morning with millions of voters preparing to vote. Polling began at 6 am local time in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia and parts of Indiana and Kentucky. More than 58 million people have already cast their ballots in early voting in person and by mail. Mail-in voting is when a ballot is sent to a voter by postal mail to be completed at home and returned by mail, drop box, or in person, rather than cast at a polling place. It has cast doubt on the method where the mail ballot delivery is done through the US Postal Service. This is even though the president himself voted by mail earlier this year. According to the American Bar Association, voter fraud is extremely rare, unlike what Trump claims. An analysis by Associated Press found that of the more than 25 million votes cast in six swing states in the 2020 election, fewer than 475 potential voter fraud cases were identified, and they weren't confirmed to have happened for sure either. Also Read: From coin tosses to tie-breakers: What happens if Senate or House ends in a tie? | US Midterms 2026 Experts say mail-in ballots should not be made out to be a problem as they go through several layers of security. As the United States votes in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, one question often comes up among Indian readers: why does a party losing an election not mean the president has to leave office? The answer lies in how the two countries elect their governments. In India, general elections decide who forms the government. In the US, midterm elections decide which party controls Congress while the president continues in office. The difference is not limited to the outcome. The two countries also follow different systems for conducting elections, registering voters, casting ballots and counting votes.
Who conducts the elections?
India has one Election Commission that oversees the entire election process, from preparing voter lists to monitoring polling and counting. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is responsible for Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. The US does not work that way. There is no single authority conducting elections across all 50 states. Each state runs its own elections, and local officials take care of polling and counting. So, a voter in Texas may follow a different set of rules from someone voting in California. Even the deadlines for registering to vote and sending postal ballots can differ.
What are people voting for?
In India, the Lok Sabha election decides which party or alliance will run the country for the next five years. People vote for their constituency's MP, and the numbers determine who gets to form the government. The US midterms have a different purpose. Americans are not voting for a new president. They are choosing their representatives in Congress — all 435 members of the House and 35 senators this time. The result will show whether Trump’s Republicans keep their hold on Congress or whether Democrats take control. Trump’s presidential term is not affected by the midterm result.
How often are elections held?
In India, Lok Sabha elections are held every five years, unless the House is dissolved before completing its term. Rajya Sabha elections follow a different schedule, with one-third of its members retiring every two years. In the US, voters return to the polls much more frequently for congressional elections. Members of the House of Representatives are elected for two-year terms, so all 435 seats are contested every two years. Senators serve six-year terms, with roughly one-third of the Senate seats going to polls every two years. Midterm elections fall halfway through the president’s four-year term.
EVMs in India, different voting methods in US
India holds Lok Sabha elections every five years, unless the government falls and the House is dissolved earlier. The Rajya Sabha has a different cycle. Its members serve six years, but one-third retire every two years, so elections are held to fill those vacancies. In the US, voters elect the entire House of Representatives every two years. Senate elections are spread out over the same period, with roughly 33 or 34 of the 100 seats contested each time. These elections, held halfway through a president’s four-year term, are known as midterms.
Why does counting take longer in the US?
In India, votes are counted on a fixed day after polling ends. In the US, counting does not always finish on Election Day. A large number of voters send their ballots by mail, and officials have to check these before adding them to the final count. The problem is that states have different rules on when this work can begin. In some places, officials can start checking mail ballots beforehand; in others, they have to wait until Election Day. Close contests can take even longer if a recount is needed.
What happens if the ruling party loses?
In India, if the ruling party loses its majority in the Lok Sabha, it cannot continue in government unless it gets the support of other parties to prove its majority. In the US, a midterm defeat does not mean the president has to step down. Trump will remain in office even if Republicans lose control of Congress. But passing laws could become harder, as the opposition would have greater control over debates, votes and congressional investigations.

US midterm elections 2026 will decide control of Congress, not the presidency. From voting methods to counting rules, here is how America’s election process differs from India’s general elections.

Senators serve six-year terms, with roughly one-third of the Senate seats going to polls every two years. Midterm elections fall halfway through the president’s four-year term. EVMs in India, different voting methods in US India holds Lok Sabha elections every five years, unless the government falls and the House is dissolved earlier.

The US Midterms 2026, scheduled for November 3, are being closely watched as a test of President Donald Trump's presidency. Republicans and Democrats are battling to establish control over Congress, with the outcome expected to shape the future for Republicans in the Presidential Elections 2028. While the results will determine which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate, a closely fought election could also throw up an unusual scenario: a tie. From an individual congressional race ending in a dead heat to an evenly divided Senate or House, the US electoral system has different ways of dealing with such outcomes.
What happens if an individual congressional race ends in a tie?
If a congressional race ends in an exact tie between two candidates, there is no single federal rule to determine the winner. Instead, the outcome is governed by individual state laws, which differ across the country. In some states, an exact tie may be resolved through a drawing of lots, which could involve a coin toss or another random method. Other states may provide for a runoff election under specific circumstances. Before a tie is officially declared, an automatic recount may also be triggered in races decided by an extremely narrow margin. A recount could uncover previously uncounted ballots and break the deadlock. Also Read: US midterm elections 2026: Why results may take longer in some US states
What happens if the US Senate is tied 50-50?
If Republicans and Democrats finish with an equal number of seats in the Senate, the Vice President of the United States holds the decisive vote. Under the US Constitution, the Vice President serves as the President of the Senate and can cast a vote to break a tie. For the 2026 midterms, this gives Republicans an advantage because Vice President JD Vance is a Republican. If the Senate is split 50-50, his tie-breaking vote would allow Republicans to retain operational control of the chamber. However, an evenly divided Senate can also require negotiations between party leaders over a power-sharing agreement. Such an arrangement determines how committee seats are distributed and how legislative business is conducted.
What happens if the House of Representatives is tied?
A tie in the House of Representatives is more complicated because, unlike the Senate, the chamber does not have a constitutional tie-breaking vote. The House has 435 seats, although vacancies caused by deaths, resignations or unresolved election disputes can temporarily alter the number of serving members. If a vote on a bill ends in a tie, the motion fails because a measure needs a majority to pass. The Speaker of the House cannot break the deadlock with an additional vote. An evenly divided House could also complicate the election of its Speaker. Since the Speaker is elected by members of the chamber, neither party would be able to secure the position without winning a majority of votes cast. This could lead to multiple rounds of voting and negotiations between lawmakers until a candidate secures the required support. Also Read: 'Stealing her brother's toys...': JD Vance jokes about his daughter to target Democrats in last US Midterm rally
Why does a tied result matter?
A tied result could complicate the formation of congressional leadership and the passage of legislation, even if it does not necessarily leave the chamber without a functioning majority. Vermont will be the first to open its polling stations at 5 am local time (10 am GMT or 3:30 pm IST). Voting will begin at 6 am local time (11 am GMT or 4:30 pm IST) in New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Kentucky. Polls in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and New York will open between 6 am and 7 am local time (11 am and 12 pm GMT or 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm IST). Also Read: How Iran war has become the most unpopular decision of Trump's presidency When will the results be announced? The first results could emerge on Tuesday as polling stations begin to close. Vote counts will continue through the evening and into Wednesday as officials process ballots and release updates. However, early results will not necessarily mean that a winner has been declared. Election officials publish vote counts as ballots are processed, while news organisations such as the Associated Press analyse the figures before calling individual races. Closely contested seats could take hours or even days to decide. It may also take time to establish which party will control Congress.

More than 230 million eligible voters across the United States can cast their ballots on Tuesday in elections that will decide the composition of Congress and several state governments.

US midterm elections: When do polls open and close, and when will results be announced?

Voting in the US midterm elections will conclude on November 3, but counting could continue for days in several states. While election officials will begin releasing results after polling stations close, the initial figures may not include every eligible ballot. The difference lies in state election laws. Some allow mail-in ballots to arrive after election day, while others require additional time to verify signatures and process ballots before including them in the final tally.
California, Nevada allow late-arriving ballots
California allows mail ballots postmarked by November 3 to arrive until November 10. Officials must verify signatures on ballot envelopes and process provisional ballots before completing the count. The state's 58 counties have 30 days to complete their official canvass.Nevada has a similar provision. Mail ballots postmarked by election day can arrive until 5 pm on the fourth day after the election. A Clark County audit of the 2022 midterms found that more than 80,000 mail ballots arrived on election day and during the following four days. Officials said resources were focused on polling centres before mail ballot processing resumed.
Arizona and Pennsylvania face different challenges
Arizona requires all ballots to reach election officials by 7 pm on election day. However, early ballots dropped off on November 3 still need to undergo verification before tabulation. Officials can continue processing them in the following days. A new option allowing voters to show identification when dropping off ballots could reduce the verification workload in 2026.Pennsylvania has a different constraint. State law prevents officials from opening mail ballots before 7 am on election day, leaving them to process large volumes while also managing polling stations.
Other states have extended deadlines
Washington allows eligible mail ballots to arrive until the day before certification, 21 days after a general election. Illinois has a 14-day receipt window, while Alaska allows up to 10 days for ballots postmarked by election day.Consequently, election-night figures remain unofficial. The US Election Assistance Commission says final results can take several days or sometimes weeks, as officials complete counting, canvassing and certification.

US midterm elections 2026: Why results may take longer in some US states

The 2026 midterm election which is set to take place across the United States in a few hours from now is going to be a crucial political test for President Donald Trump and both major parties (Democrats and Republicans). With control of Congress at stake, the results could have far-reaching implications for Washington and the remainder of Trump's presidency. Meanwhile, news agency the Associated Press is gearing up to announce the US election winners, as it has done since several years.
Why does AP calls US election winners?
But why does AP calls US election winners needs a bit of explanation. For people who are new to US elections, AP has declared winners in US elections since 1848, when it reported the victory of Whig candidate Zachary Taylor over Democrat Lewis Cass. That's because the Founding Fathers did not set up a single federal election authority that collected and announced nationwide results. Elections were administered separately by states and local jurisdictions during that time and newspapers depended on information arriving from different parts of the country. So, national news organisation could collect, consolidate and distribute results much more efficiently which is why AP gradually became a trusted central source for election information. So every US election night, The Associated Press counts the the total votes polled by tallying millions of ballots and determining which candidates have won their races. However, the news agency does not officially decide who wins an election. It reports and declares, as a news organisation, when the available evidence establishes who has won. It is the government authority that makes the final announcement.

The Indian Navy, with support from the Indian Air Force, has rescued all 20 crew members of the Iranian fishing vessel Azini after a 48-hour operation against armed Somali pirates more than 3,000 km from Mumbai. No casualties or injuries were reported. The vessel was seized on 29 October off the northeastern coast of Somalia, between Bandarbayla and Hafun. About 12 armed pirates boarded the Iranian-flagged dhow, which was carrying Iranian crew. Maritime authorities, including the EU-backed Maritime Security Centre–Indian Ocean, warned that the pirates intended to use it as a “mother ship” to launch further attacks on merchant shipping in the region. In response, the Indian Navy diverted the guided-missile destroyer INS Kolkata, already on mission deployment, to intercept the vessel. It was supported by long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, including a P-8I, with additional assistance from platforms such as the MQ-9. After locating and tracking Azini through sustained surveillance, the naval force used calibrated non-kinetic measures to contain the vessel and prevent its escape toward busy shipping lanes. Marine Commandos (MARCOS) were then inserted by a precision airdrop from an Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft. In a coordinated tactical intervention, the commandos secured the vessel, overcame the pirate threat and freed the crew. Photographs released after the operation showed seized weapons, including firearms and ammunition, laid out on the deck, with INS Kolkata standing by. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the forces on Monday. “My congratulations to the Indian Navy for successfully executing a meticulously coordinated 48-hour operation to rescue all 20 crew members of the pirated fishing vessel, Azini, more than 3000 km from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, on 2 Nov 26,” he said. “The swift localisation, interception and safe release of the crew and vessel from significantly-armed pirates, with timely support from the Indian Air Force, speak well of the Indian Navy’s high operational readiness and ability to respond decisively to maritime threats across the region.”

Donald Trump Jr has landed himself in an embarrassing moment on the campaign trail after mistakenly suggesting that Democrats want to make Ohio a state, more than two centuries after it became a US state. Speaking at a campaign event alongside Vice President JD Vance in Swanton, Ohio, on Monday (Nov 2), the US President’s eldest son appeared to confuse Ohio with Washington DC while listing what he described as Democratic plans ahead of the midterm elections. The video of his remarks has gone viral on social media.“They want to pack the Supreme Court.
Trump Jr’s Ohio slip-up draws attention
The apparent mix-up came during a final push by Vance to rally support for Republican candidates ahead of Tuesday's elections.Trump Jr did not explain how Democrats could make Ohio a state, instead moving on to attack Democratic candidates, describing them as “the most radical people ever put forth by the Democrat[ic] party”.He also targeted Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, who is challenging Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in a closely watched race.
Why Washington DC statehood is controversial
Unlike Ohio, Washington DC is not a state. Its potential statehood has remained a contentious political issue, with Democrats supporting greater representation for its residents and Republicans arguing that statehood could give Democrats an electoral advantage. The District currently has a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives but no voting senators.Trump Jr’s comments came just a day before Americans headed to the polls, turning an apparent slip of the tongue into an unexpected talking point during the final hours of campaigning.
