Democrats wrested full control of Congress in the US midterm elections of November 3, winning House and Senate races and flipping states even in traditional Republican strongholds, in a 'Blue wave' helped by Donald Trump's deep unpopularity, partly due to the Iran war and other foreign policy missteps, making him enter a lame-duck presidency during which he promised to be 'Mr Veto'. Blue wave: Democrats wrest full control of Congress, 'Mr Veto' Trump goes into lame-duck presidency

Despite an ongoing federal criminal probe against her, US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won reelection from Minnesota's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday night (Nov 3). Minnesota's 5th Congressional District is one of America's bluest districts. She has won the district since 2018 midterms when she became one of the first two Muslim women elected to the House of Representatives. She defeated Republican 30-year state trooper John Nagel. In her first reaction after the victory, Ilhan Omar said that people will not allow US President Donald Trump to silence them. She framed her reelection as a clear mandate and a powerful rejection of political targeting.

Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate.

A Justice Department spokesperson said that Homeland Security Investigations “executed a judicially authorized search warrant” as “part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The statement did not specify that the investigation was related to Omar, nor did it provide more information about the search. According to a report by the New York Post, Omar's husband, Tim Mynett, initially valued his venture capital firm, Rose Lake Capital, and his now-defunct California-based wine business, eStCru, at up to USD 30 million in the congresswoman's 2024 financial disclosure. However, the report said that in Omar's 2025 financial disclosure, Mynett reported no income from his venture capital firm and between USD 200 and USD 1,000 in income from the wine business, which shut down in April. The probe is reportedly on this, even as Omar described herself as “working class.” Also Read: US Midterms 2026: Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan race, becomes first Muslim American to be elected to US Senate
Allegations related to marriage
The allegations that have been circulating for over a decade is that Omar entered into a sham marriage with her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to get him a green card. Federal prosecutors are currently investigating whether the 2009 marriage between Representative Omar and Elmi involved a deliberate attempt to circumvent US immigration laws. Federal investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information on immigration documents, including details concerning her birth date, according to The New York Post, citing sources familiar with the investigation. Re-elected in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District after defeating Republican John Nagel, Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar pushed back against an ongoing federal investigation, calling her victory a clear sign that voters refuse to let Donald Trump silence them.

El-Sayed said: "I am so proud and honored to stand here as your senator-elect from the great state of Michigan." “Michigan, I can't wait to serve you. Tonight we defeated a machine.
Michigan Senate race
This was one of the most closely watched race in the US Midterm Elections 2026. Rogers was backed by US President Donald Trump. Rogers and El Sayed clashed in a high-stakes televised debate covering key economic and foreign policy pressures, including inflation and gas prices, international trade tariffs, and the impact of economic relations with Canada. The race also drew substantial national investment, with Republican groups spending roughly $104 million compared to $55 million by Democratic organisations. El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination after narrowly defeating moderate US Representative Haley Stevens in a closely contested primary.
Trump vs Obama over Abdul El-Sayed
While Trump made the Michigan Senate campaign heavily focused on Abdul El-Sayed by escalating anti-Muslim rhetoric, urging Jewish voters against supporting him, and calling him a "jihadist." Trump further stirred controversy by comparing El-Sayed to the September 11 Flight 93 attackers and mockingly referring to him as "Mohammed," drawing widespread accusations of Islamophobia and racism. In response, Barack Obama joined El-Sayed at a high-stakes Detroit rally to condemn these personal attacks on his name and faith, defense-linking them to his own birther conspiracy experience and declaring that El-Sayed "is as Michigan as it gets."

‘American people have rebuked lame duck Trump’: Democrat Jon Ossoff after winning Georgia

Democrats have scored early victories in the 2026 US Midterm Elections, flipping North Carolina's Senate seat and retaining key seats in Georgia, Virginia and New Jersey. With House and Senate races being called, here is a look at the major winners and losers as counting continues.

The 2026 U.S. Midterm Elections have delivered a historic rebuke to President Donald Trump's second term, culminating in a dramatic "blue wave" that saw Democrats officially capture control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives. In the Senate, Democrats defied an unfavorable map by net-flipping seven seats to secure a 53–43 majority, complementing their project majority win in the 435-member House. Held halfway through Trump's four-year presidency, the elections served as a definitive referendum on his domestic and foreign policies. Live tracking and projections indicate the Democratic sweep was fueled by widespread voter discontent over rising inflation and high prices, the ongoing conflict in Iran, aggressive immigration crackdowns, and concerns surrounding government corruption. This complete Democratic takeover of Congress marks a catastrophic setback for the Trump administration, stripping Republicans of their legislative power and effectively halting Trump's agenda for his remaining two years in office. Beyond blocking key legislation, the new Democratic majorities gain sweeping oversight powers, enabling aggressive committee investigations and policy challenges. As the final results solidify, the midterms not only reshape Washington's balance of power but also set a new trajectory for the key winners, losers, and political figures heading into the 2028 presidential race. Chris Pappas has made history as the first gay man to be elected to the US Senate, after Republican former Senator John E. Sununu conceded defeat in New Hampshire. According to Decision Desk HQ, with 22% of votes counted at around 8 pm Eastern on Tuesday, Pappas led Sununu 60% to 37%.“Tonight’s results are a wake-up call for corporate special interests and billionaires who have been rigging the economy, for the cowards in Congress who have enabled healthcare cuts, tariffs and war,” Pappas said during his victory speech. “And for the incompetent president who can’t even be bothered to care how people are being hurt.”Pappas will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Republican Sununu held the seat from 2003 to 2008, when Democrat Shaheen flipped the seat and held it for three consecutive terms before her retirement. The GOP hasn't won in the state at the presidential level since 2000, but they have controlled the governor position since 2017. With Sununu, GOP was expecting to flip the seat as he had distanced himself from Trump. Also Read: Trump considers pre-emptive pardons for Elon Musk if Democrats win Congress“To me, I’ve never sought to make history,” said Pappas.46-year-old Chris Pappas also became the first LGBTQ+ US representative in 2019. His LGBTQ+ identity faced scrutiny after Pappas voted in favour of the 2024 National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA), which restricted TRICARE coverage for gender-affirming care for transgender minors.
