Alberta voted Monday (Oct 19) to remain part of Canada, rejecting a campaign to separate the oil-rich western province from the rest of the country. CBC News projected late Monday evening local time that voters had endorsed staying in Canada over the option of holding a second vote on secession. The referendum reflected Alberta's long-standing resentment toward the central government, as well as more recent discontent. Many separatist leaders rose to political prominence by organising large protests against Covid-era restrictions. Unlike in Quebec, which held two unsuccessful votes on leaving Canada, secessionist sentiment has always been a minority view in Alberta. Opponents nonetheless feared voters might back a second referendum to signal their unhappiness with the province's relationship with Canada, and that loyal Albertans might stay home, assuming the province would never reject the nation. The vote was the initiative of Danielle Smith, the conservative premier, who angered both sides. She became United Conservative Party leader largely with the backing of separatists who had ousted her predecessor, Jason Kenney. Federalists were upset that she added the question on a second secession vote to a previously planned referendum with nine other questions on provincial powers and immigration. The move followed a court decision blocking separatists' attempt to force a vote through a petition. Federalists called her decision an effort to circumvent the courts and unconstitutional. Separatists, meanwhile, were dismayed that she opted for a vote on holding another vote rather than a clear stay-or-leave question. Smith said she would vote to remain in Canada, but secession opponents doubted her sincerity. In an online forum last month, she said she backed fighting for Alberta within Canada while outlining grievances with Ottawa. She asked whether the country actually wants Albertans when their livelihood is treated as something to be phased out, a reference to environmental policies under former prime minister Justin Trudeau that many saw as an attempt to shut down the oil sands. Business groups, former premiers and local politicians firmly backed remaining in Canada. Economic studies, including one commissioned by the provincial government, forecast enormous costs from leaving. The vote also took place against the backdrop of President Trump's trade war on Canada and his musings about making it the 51st state. Some prominent separatist leaders travelled to Washington three times last year seeking support from low-level State Department officials. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was raised in Edmonton, called the referendum a "dangerous bluff." He drew enthusiastic crowds at two large rallies for remaining in Canada last week in Edmonton and Calgary. Smith attended neither. About 1.3 million people, just over a third of eligible voters, cast ballots by mail or early voting. Voters had to mark 10 separate paper ballots, causing long lines at many of the 1,400 polling stations on Monday (Oct 19).

Pakistan has recorded its seventh polio case this year, after a six-month-old boy from Karachi's East district tested positive for wild poliovirus, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) announced on Monday (Oct 19). The child lives in Union Council Jamali Colony and was identified through the country's polio surveillance network. The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Islamabad confirmed the case, according to an NEOC statement. The centre said the infant was malnourished and had been infected by virus already circulating in Karachi reported news outlet Dawn. A polio programme official said as mentioned in the report that this is the first case reported from the city since December 2024. Karachi has seen intense virus circulation over the past two years, though door-to-door vaccination drives and improved routine immunisation had sharply reduced transmission. Only one environmental surveillance site in the city tested positive in September. The NEOC cautioned, however, that vulnerable children remain at risk as long as the virus continues to circulate. Also read: Gulf energy attacks endanger long-term economy, warns Pakistan finance minister Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation. The Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) is assessing the "best science-based response to tackle and prevent further transmission, including targeted vaccination activities and support to strengthen routine immunisation", Dawn reported. Of the seven cases detected nationwide this year, five were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), including four from Bannu division, while two were from Sindh. The latest case comes about two weeks after the sixth was reported from KP's Khyber district, where a seven-year-old boy tested positive. With Israeli elections around the corner, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's attempt to keep National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir away from his government if he wins has opened up a new internal tussle within the right-wing coalition. Ben Gvir has now said that he felt personally hurt by Netanyahu's alleged efforts to exclude him from the next government. The Otzma Yehudit chairman expressed disappointment over the apparent shift in their relationship. "But I was your partner, I am your partner, I love you. Why do you have to go to all kinds of countries and tell them, 'Without Ben-Gvir'? It's personally hurtful; it's unpleasant," Ben-Gvir admitted. "But I came here for the State of Israel. I entered politics to make changes, and you also encounter disappointments." He also said that 'some parties would be happy if I weren't in the next government.' Ben-Gvir acknowledged that he remains unpopular among certain international figures. "It's pretty clear that my name is one that quite a few people around the world aren't particularly fond of," he acknowledged. Federal investigators in the United States have obtained DNA evidence to prove that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) married her brother and committed immigration fraud, The New York Post reported. According to the outlet, DNA, government records, and information from whistleblowers is being used to investigate whether Oman and her family committed immigration fraud. Feds have been probing whether Omar's former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, is her biological brother. A source told the outlet that DNA evidence will play a critical role in establishing whether this is true. The two married in 2009 but separated two years later. They legally divorced in 2017. Omar had maintained that there was no fraud committed. The report did not clarify how the DNA was obtained. Notably, Homeland Security Investigations had searched Omar’s Washington, DC, home on October 12. Prosecutors are said to be now in possession of solid evidence to bring an immigration fraud conspiracy case before a grand jury. Two people told the outlet that this includes the DNA samples, whatever was discovered during last week's search and other findings. Earlier reports also claimed that the investigators went through her trash to get DNA samples, but a source denied this. Omar and her father are also being investigated to determine whether her birth date was misrepresented in the immigration papers. Elmi is currently in the UK and is said to have applied for a marriage-based green card, but withdrew his application in 2019. This came after officials asked him for more evidence about the marriage, according to The Washington Post. Omar's attorneys hit back last week, writing in a letter to federal prosecutors last week that there is "no legitimate basis for any suggestion that she has violated any law concerning her citizenship status," The Associated Press reported. This vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated criminal investigation into one of the President’s chief congressional critics violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers,” Omar’s attorneys wrote in the same letter.

North Korea released photos showing Kim Jong Un inspecting shoes and women’s clothing after reports emerged that the dictator had died after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage. The images were published by North Korean state media on Monday (October 19), in a likely attempt to offer proof of life and quell the rumours. The photos show Kim at a garment and footwear exhibition, checking out children’s footwear and inspecting women’s coats. The country's Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim toured the exhibition on Monday. However, the exact date the images were taken remains unverified. In one of the photos, Kim can be seen inspecting a pink shoe held by a woman. Another shows him standing with his legs apart, apparently speaking to an official. Wanjun Xie, a US-based Chinese dissident associated with the China Democracy Party, claimed on social media on Sunday that the 42-year-old leader had suffered a brain haemorrhage. He said that he had fallen into a coma and was rushed to Beijing for treatment, where he died. Xie further stated that his body was returned to North Korea and China dispatched 9,000 troops to Pyongyang amid fears of violence over succession. Xie also claimed that experts from Beijing’s Peking Union Medical College Hospital went to North Korea on Saturday to treat Kim after he suffered a severe cerebral haemorrhage.
Past rumours surrounding Kim Jong Un's death
Similar rumours about Kim Jong Un have done rounds in the past as well. In 2020, social media was abuzz with rumours that Jong Un had died after he did not make a public appearance for several months. An ex-diplomat even claimed that he was in a coma and power would be handed to his sister, Kim Yo-jong. Experts believe that, in the event of his death, his sister will take control of the regime. She made several statements earlier this week, including that North Korea could deploy additional tactical weapons near the border with South Korea and turn loudspeakers towards the enemy country. Kim Jong Un was also said to have been grooming his young daughter to take the reins of the country. Kim Ju-ae, who is only 13 right now, has made several high-profile appearances alongside her father. While she hasn't been officially designated as his successor, South Korean spies say she is his heir apparent. Her first public appearance was in November 2022 at a missile launch.

Has Kim Jong Un died? A US-based Chinese dissident has claimed that the North Korean dictator passed away after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage. North Korean state media shared photos of Jong Un at an exhibition to thwart the claim.

Xie also claimed that experts from Beijing’s Peking Union Medical College Hospital went to North Korea on Saturday to treat Kim after he suffered a severe cerebral haemorrhage. Past rumours surrounding Kim Jong Un's death Similar rumours about Kim Jong Un have done rounds in the past as well.

India has called for a universal, non-discriminatory and verifiable framework for nuclear disarmament at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) First Committee, stressing that decisions on the use of nuclear weapons must remain under human control amid the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into defence systems. Delivering India's official statement under the nuclear weapons cluster at the UNGA First Committee, Congress MP Manish Tewari highlighted the need to address technological and operational risks associated with nuclear arsenals, particularly those arising from the use of emerging technologies in nuclear command and control systems. India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations highlighted Tewari's remarks in a post on X, reiterating New Delhi's commitment to global nuclear disarmament and efforts to strengthen the international non-proliferation regime. "India acknowledges that the use of artificial intelligence in nuclear command and control raises real questions," Tewari stated. "We espouse the principle that the decision to use nuclear weapons should be taken by humans." Reaffirming India’s foundational defence doctrine, the delegate noted that New Delhi’s strategic capabilities are purely defensive and shaped by regional security realities rather than targeted at any single nation. "As a responsible nuclear weapon state, India maintains a policy of credible minimum deterrence with a posture of no first use and non-use against non-nuclear weapon states," Tewari declared. "We are prepared to convert these undertakings into multilateral legal arrangements. I wish to underline that India's capabilities are shaped by our unique security environment and are not directed against any specific actor." Reiterating New Delhi’s commitment to nuclear restraint, India reaffirmed its adherence to a voluntary unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing. Tewari also advocated for legally binding negative security assurances to protect non-nuclear nations. "India believes that legally binding assurances to non-nuclear weapon states against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons should alleviate their sense of insecurity, and thereby strengthen the non-proliferation regime," he noted, adding that such guarantees would directly contribute to reducing nuclear risk worldwide. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Monday that two Indian nationals were arrested in California over the weekend in connection with alleged voter registration fraud. The arrests were part of a wider operation in which 28 people were taken into custody across California, including 11 on Monday. The DOJ said the action was part of a coordinated effort among all four California-based United States Attorney’s Offices to combat and root out fraud in US elections and protect electoral integrity. According to the department, all 28 defendants are green card holders and face various criminal charges related to alleged citizenship fraud, including registering to vote in California despite not being US citizens.
Two Indian nationals identified
The two Indian nationals were identified as Amandeep Kaur, 30, and Kamlesh Navnitlal Shah, 67. Kaur, a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles County, is reportedly seeking US citizenship. The DOJ alleged that Kaur fraudulently registered to vote in California, first in the December 2022 midterm elections and again in the November 2024 general election. Shah, who resides in Sacramento, California, was accused of registering to vote and casting a ballot in the 2024 US elections. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday, Axios reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter. The visit came a day after US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Netanyahu ahead of Israel's parliamentary election scheduled for next week. The upcoming vote is the country's first since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which shocked Israel and triggered a wider regional conflict. Israel subsequently launched military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon and became involved in hostilities with Iran.
Vance declines to endorse Netanyahu
While Trump has openly backed Netanyahu, US Vice President JD Vance declined to endorse the Israeli leader during an interview on Monday, saying he did not intend to interfere in Israel's election. "I endorse American candidates, and that's where I'm focused on is the midterms," Vance said in an interview with digital media outlet 2WAY. Vance made the remarks after being asked about Netanyahu. Earlier this year, he travelled to Budapest and endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of Hungary's election. Pete Hegseth meets Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced Israel visit as Trump endorses the Israeli PM and JD Vance declines to back him

Vance declines to endorse Netanyahu While Trump has openly backed Netanyahu, US Vice President JD Vance declined to endorse the Israeli leader during an interview on Monday, saying he did not intend to interfere in Israel's election. "I'm not anti-endorsing him, but I'm not pro-endorsing him, I'm not getting involved in Israeli elections." Vance said. US President Donald Trump on Monday called for New Mexico to change its name to ‘New America’, marking his latest effort to rename geographical locations in line with his political messaging. “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly before leaving the White House for a midterm election rally in Kansas. The proposal comes as Republicans face concerns about retaining their congressional majorities in November. New Mexico, a Democratic-leaning state, voted against Trump by six percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.Polling has hinted that some voters believe the president is not paying sufficient attention to the country's most pressing issues. Trump argued, without presenting supporting evidence, that changing the state's name would increase property values and incomes. He also repeated his unsubstantiated allegations about election irregularities. “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” he added. Also Read: 'Close up your borders': Trump blames immigration for France unrest, urges Macron to tighten border policies

Trump renews efforts to rename New Mexico
Monday's statement was not the first time Trump has proposed changing New Mexico's name. In September, he shared an image on social media showing the word ‘Mexico’ crossed out on a map of the state, with ‘America’ written beneath it. The White House's official account on X subsequently reposted the image. In August, Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. The previous year, he took similar action to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’. The president has also repeatedly suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the ‘Trump Strait’.
Can Trump legally rename New Mexico?
Although the federal government has authority over the official names of many geographical features through the Geographic Names Information System, the president cannot unilaterally change the legal name of a US state. Renaming a state would require action through the relevant state-level legal and political processes rather than a presidential order alone. New Mexico's name also has a long history predating the establishment of the United States. According to a fact sheet on state-name origins from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the name dates back to the 16th century.

Japan has launched a spacecraft designed to become the first mission to retrieve samples from one of Mars' moons, potentially providing crucial insights into the origins of the Solar System and the emergence of life on Earth. The unmanned Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft lifted off aboard Japan's flagship H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center at 4:41 am local time, according to a livestream broadcast by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Despite the early morning launch, thousands of viewers watched the livestream and shared messages of encouragement for the mission. The spacecraft is expected to reach the vicinity of Mars around August next year. It will then enter orbit around Phobos, the larger of the planet's two moons, before attempting to land on its surface and collect at least 10 grams (0.35 ounces) of material. The mission is scheduled to spend approximately three years operating in the Martian region. It aims to achieve the first round trip to the Martian system for the purpose of returning samples from one of its moons. The project involves collaboration with US and European space agencies, along with numerous universities and technology companies. Scientists hope its findings will advance our understanding of Mars and help prepare for future human exploration of the Red Planet.
MMX mission could reveal how Mars' moons formed
JAXA expects the mission to shed light on the origins of Phobos and Deimos, Mars' two moons, and help scientists better understand the formation of the Solar System. Researchers are investigating two leading explanations for the moons' origins. The first is the ‘giant impact’ hypothesis, which suggests that the moons formed from debris following a collision between Mars and another celestial body. The second is the ‘capture’ hypothesis, which proposes that Phobos and Deimos were asteroids captured by Mars' gravitational pull. Analysing samples collected from Phobos could help scientists determine which theory is more likely and better understand the history of the Martian system. According to JAXA, resolving the mystery could also help scientists understand how a habitable environment for life might have arisen on the terrestrial planets.
Japan space agency says MMX probe on journey towards Mars moon
Japanese scientists confirmed on Tuesday that a space probe designed to become the first mission to collect samples from one of Mars' moons is on its way to the Martian region following a successful separation from its launch rocket. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced the milestone during a live broadcast, confirming that the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft had successfully detached from the H3 rocket. "The separation of MMX has been confirmed," the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said in a live stream, referring to the Martian Moons eXploration probe. "MMX has detached from the H3 rocket and is beginning its journey toward the Martian system."
Phobos could serve as a 'natural space station'
Beyond investigating the origins of Mars' moons, the MMX mission will examine whether Phobos could serve as a natural space station for future crewed missions to Mars. JAXA said the mission will establish requirements for a round trip involving the moon, potentially supporting the development of infrastructure and operational plans for future human exploration. The spacecraft will also observe Deimos, Mars' smaller and more distant moon, although it will not attempt to land on its surface. Scientists hope the mission's findings will contribute to future exploration strategies and help identify ways to make crewed journeys to Mars more practical.
Japan joins the global race to return Mars samples
Japan's MMX mission is part of a broader international effort to bring extraterrestrial material from the Martian region back to Earth. The United States and China have also pursued plans to retrieve samples directly from Mars. NASA's Perseverance rover, which has been exploring the planet since 2021, has already collected rock and soil samples for potential return to Earth. However, the planned US sample-return programme faced a major setback after the administration of President Donald Trump effectively cancelled the mission following a congressional vote in January. China is also preparing its Tianwen-3 mission, which is scheduled to launch around 2028. The programme aims to return samples collected from Mars to Earth as early as 2031. Depending on the progress of these competing programmes, China could potentially return Martian samples before Japan's MMX mission completes its journey.

US President Donald Trump on Monday once again blamed immigration for the protests and violence reported across France in recent days, urging European countries and French President Emmanuel Macron to tighten border controls. Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump reiterated his criticism of France's immigration policies, arguing that immigration, rather than other domestic issues, was responsible for the unrest. "What's happening in France has to do with immigration, not schools, not anything," Trump told reporters in Washington, echoing his comments from the day before.
Immigration remains central to Trump's political agenda
Trump made combating illegal immigration a central pledge of his 2024 presidential campaign. His political messaging has frequently linked immigration to crime, public safety and national identity, at times relying on false claims that have drawn criticism for playing on racial fears. While Trump attributed the unrest in France to immigration, the supplied account does not establish immigration as the cause of the demonstrations. The protests were reported to have centred on rising prices, and the circumstances surrounding the violence require separate consideration.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was willing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China next month, hinting that any potential summit would primarily focus on nuclear weapons and denuclearization but could also address the war in Ukraine. Trump also renewed his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country has been fighting Russia's invasion since 2022, arguing that Ukraine should consider a different representative for peace negotiations. "It was time for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine," Trump said, escalating his criticism of Zelensky amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the US approach to Moscow. Some viewers questioned the decision to jog through an area where burning barricades and thick smoke could pose safety risks. Others argued that a short video offered little insight into the woman's circumstances, intentions or state of mind. One user suggested that the woman might simply have been exercising to manage stress or maintain a familiar routine, pointing out that outsiders could not know what she was thinking. Another social media user praised her for concentrating on herself rather than attempting to change the behaviour of others. A third user defended the jogger, arguing that she should not be expected to participate in the unrest or allow the actions of rioters to dictate her daily activities. According to this view, continuing with her routine could be one way of coping with an unpredictable and stressful situation.

US President Donald Trump doubled down on his support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call on Monday (Oct 19), a day after publicly endorsing him for re-election ahead of Israel's October 27 parliamentary polls. During the conversation, Trump predicted Netanyahu would win and suggested they could work together again against Iran. Netanyahu released a video of the call, in which the two leaders praised each other. “I think you're going to have a tremendous victory, actually,” Trump said, adding, “You're the man I want by my side, Bibi,” referring to Netanyahu by his nickname. Netanyahu thanked Trump for joining Israel in military strikes against Iran in late February and suggested their mission was not over. “Donald, we have a job to finish. We'll finish it together. We'll finish it, and no one else will do it,” Netanyahu said. He did not elaborate but again described Iran's clerical leadership as “the greatest danger”. Iran's government remains in power nearly eight months after the joint attack.

Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel's October 27 elections, while the Israeli prime minister suggested their joint efforts against Iran were not over.

A former OpenAI engineer accused of secretly installing an audio-recording device inside an executive conference room was in frequent contact with a member of the Saudi royal family and allegedly planned to leave the United States for Riyadh before his arrest, federal prosecutors said in a court filing. Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national, allegedly used artificial intelligence tools to help develop encrypted recording devices and identify meeting rooms used by OpenAI executives, government officials and business partners, according to prosecutors. Alfozan reportedly earned an annual salary of $385,000 at OpenAI and received a $2.2 million equity grant when he joined the artificial intelligence company in July 2025. In an 11-page court memorandum, prosecutors said investigators recovered evidence indicating that Alfozan may have intended to install additional recording devices inside OpenAI offices. The filing also disclosed WhatsApp communications between Alfozan and an unidentified member of the Saudi royal family, who allegedly encouraged him to return to the kingdom and participate in a Saudi AI initiative. Investigators also reportedly found photographs of potential surveillance locations, searches related to meetings between OpenAI and Saudi government officials, and notes suggesting that Alfozan intended to retrieve the devices before leaving the company.
Prosecutors detail alleged recording device inside OpenAI office
According to the filing, Alfozan allegedly installed a concealed recording device on September 28 by inserting it into a USB port at the back of a television in an executive conference room at OpenAI. Investigators alleged that the device remained in place for multiple days. Prosecutors said he modified the device to prevent data transfer between it and the television into which it was inserted and had also encrypted the content stored on the device's microSD. The alleged incident has raised concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive corporate information, given the nature of the meetings held in the conference room. According to prosecutors, those meetings frequently involve discussions of highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information, including proprietary research, as well as nonpublic information about OpenAI's technical progress and strategic decisions, capabilities, priorities, government engagements, and commercial relationships. Investigators further alleged that, during the period surrounding the device's installation, OpenAI executives met with government officials in the same room. The filing stated that the defendant's conduct could pose a danger to the national security of the United States. Authorities also reportedly found photographs on Alfozan's cellphone showing at least one other concealed recording device, along with electronic equipment in additional OpenAI meeting rooms. Also Read: US midterm elections 2026: Early voting picks up pace ahead of November 3 polls
AI chatbot allegedly used to develop recording technology
Prosecutors alleged that Alfozan used an AI chatbot account belonging to his wife in the days before the device was installed to research ways to customise and improve the recording equipment. The allegations have not, by themselves, established guilt.
Saudi Royal allegedly encouraged engineer to return to Riyadh
The court filing also outlined Alfozan's reported communications with a member of the Saudi royal family.Prosecutors alleged that throughout 2025 and 2026, Alfozan was in frequent communication via WhatsApp with a member of the Saudi Royal Family, including as recently as October 5, 2026. According to the government, the royal family member told Alfozan that Saudi Arabia was launching an artificial intelligence initiative and encouraged him to join it. "Saudi needs you more than [sic] the US!" the member reportedly wrote while attempting to recruit him. Prosecutors said Alfozan agreed in principle but indicated that he did not intend to leave until his stock vested.
Arrest came days before planned one-way flight to Saudi Arabia
Authorities arrested Alfozan on October 9, three days before he was scheduled to travel from San Francisco to Riyadh with his wife and infant son on a one-way flight, according to the filing. Prosecutors alleged that his wife and three-month-old son subsequently left the United States on October 10 on business-class tickets purchased by a Saudi military official. Before his arrest, Alfozan had reportedly been scheduled to begin two months of parental leave in October 2026. The government has cited the planned travel, his financial resources and his alleged connections as reasons to seek his continued detention while the case proceeds.
OpenAI terminates engineer following arrest
According to the court filing, Alfozan had no prior criminal record. He became a US permanent resident in September 2020 and subsequently applied for citizenship. OpenAI terminated his employment following his arrest. The decision rejected a request from his attorneys to secure his release. Prosecutors opposed his release, citing his frequent contact with an unidentified member of the Saudi royal family as part of their argument. Alfozan appeared before the court on Monday wearing orange prison clothing. He remained silent throughout the hour-long hearing.

US midterm elections 2026: Early voting picks up pace ahead of November 3 polls

The US midterm elections are now just two weeks away, and the Democrats seem well positioned to reclaim the House of Representatives. The battle for control of the Senate, however, remains uncertain. A majority of opinion polls and prediction markets broadly agree on the House outlook, but the Senate contest looks like giving the Republicans a potential path to retaining power. Americans will vote on November 3 to elect all 435 members of the House and roughly one-third of the Senate. There are several factors like competitive constituencies, profile of local candidates and turnout patterns that will determine the real outcome.
Prediction markets favour Democrats
Traders on Kalshi gave Democrats approximately a 90% probability of winning the House and a 63% probability of capturing the Senate.
‘Unfavourable election results prompted questions on procedural integrity’
The signatories alleged that unfavourable election results have prompted questions about procedural integrity, while adverse judgments had drawn criticism of judicial independence. They also objected to drawing the Armed Forces into partisan political discourse. The signatories acknowledged that dissent plays an essential role in a democracy but said certain groups were using matters pending before courts to sow doubts about Indian democracy and amplify those concerns through street protests. “We understand dissent is an essential ingredient of democracy, but we refuse to be silent spectators to the subversion of democratic apparatus in its guise.”
Invoke Dr BR Ambedkar’s warning
Invoking Dr BR Ambedkar’s warning against abandoning constitutional methods, the signatories urged political and social groups to resolve differences through debate, discussion, dialogue and dissent within constitutional institutions. They reminded that Dr B. BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian constitution, warned posterity of this scenario. “He exhorted that for India to survive as a constitutional republic, we must ‘hold fast to constitutional methods… abandon the bloody methods of revolution (which are) the grammar of anarchy.’ Increasingly, anarchy is becoming an expression of choice – ready to supplant the spirit and wisdom of fraternite,” the statement said. According to the accompanying release, the signatories span four continents, and they live in or have studied in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Israel and the UAE.Their affiliations include MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, the London School of Economics and the University of Toronto, among other institutions. The release clarified that these affiliations do not imply endorsement by the respective universities.

New Delhi: US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has said a jammed firearm averted a potential massacre at a Hindu temple near Chicago where he and his family were worshipping, calling the malfunction “divine intervention” amid what he described as surging anti-Indian hate. Speaking to WION’s Sidhant Sibal, days after authorities charged 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, in connection with an alleged plot targeting the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora on 11 October, Krishnamoorthi recounted the scene. “It was a beautiful fall day here in the Chicago area... countless families were celebrating inside the temple, including my own. Little did we know that a gunman was outside in the parking lot with his semi-automatic weapon and 300 rounds of ammunition intent on committing a massacre. He took one shot and his gun malfunctioned, jammed,” he said. “But if that had not happened, we would be having a much different conversation today.” Police said a vehicle registered to Paporakis entered the temple parking lot that afternoon. Prosecutors alleged he prepared an eight-page manifesto in which he expressed hatred for Indians, Jews, Black people and other minorities, describing them in dehumanising terms. He was arrested after a co-worker tip and faces charges including making a terrorist threat. No one was injured. Krishnamoorthi, who has long worshipped at the temple with his elderly parents, called the discovery “very shocking” and “horrifying”, noting the manifesto’s explicit targeting of Indians among other groups. The Illinois Democrat linked the incident to what he said was a sharp rise in anti-Indian rhetoric online and in politics over the past two years, directed even at figures such as Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley and Usha Vance. “I don’t care if you’re Republican or Democrat... we’ve got to condemn this hate,” he said. Krishnamoorthi accused some MAGA politicians of using “anti-Indian hate as a political tool”, calling it “a horrible sin, horrible political sin” that “plays on people’s fears and their bigotry toward Indians”. The Indian American congressman reacted sharply, when asked about US Vice-President JD Vance's recent comments, in which he referred to H-1B visa holders, predominantly Indian nationals, as “foreign indentured servants”. “JD Vance should know better,” he said. “JD Vance is married to an Indian American. He has children basically of Indian descent, and he needs to speak out and condemn this anti-Indian rhetoric... By participating in this type of rhetoric, he may think that is somehow enhancing his political viability, but quite frankly to me, he is hurting Indian Americans and endangering them, and I think it’s got to stop.” Vance has since then described his wording as imperfect and said his criticism targeted companies, visa system rather than workers, while emphasising he loves his Indian in-laws. On Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India this week for talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar focused on energy, trade and the strategic partnership, Krishnamoorthi said it would only help if Rubio and the Trump administration “listen carefully to concerns and address” issues. “If it’s merely... a situation where he’s delivering a one-way message, and he’s not listening... it’s not fruitful,” he added. He argued that US foreign policy conducted in a way that “pushes our friends, partners and allies away” risks damaging the relationship, while a partnership-focused approach would allow both countries to tackle common challenges. Krishnamoorthi also called for greater accountability for social media platforms that amplify hate. The US Congressman said the forthcoming midterm elections will deliver a clear advantage to Democrats in both the House and Senate.“It’s absolutely an edge for the Democratic [side], the House and the Senate in Congress,” he pointed. “I believe this will be a big rebuke to President Trump and his policies, and this election will then [provide] a check on his power, which I think the American people desperately want right now.”

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi accused some MAGA politicians of using anti-Indian hate as a political tool, calling it “a horrible sin, horrible political sin” that plays on people’s fears and their bigotry toward Indians.

Even as US President Donald Trump has been on the campaign trail, with a desperate bid to shore up support for Republicans in the midterm polls due in November, his personal popularity has plunged to a record low. According to a latest poll by Ipsos, 66% of US adults disapprove of his performance as president. Amid this, the 'No Kings' movement is proving to be another headache for him. Thousands of protesters opposed to Trump rallied in various cities across America, as part of the No Kings movement, with an aim to getting people out to vote early in the midterms. Protesters carried banners such as 'Resist all corruption' and, 'Stop Trump, save democracy'. Now, this movement was started by liberal organisations within the US in June last year to oppose the policies imposed by Trump. This includes concerns about federal layoffs, ICE action, which has caused the deaths of multiple immigrants and foreign wars initiated by the US President. Amid this, the temporary suspension of the Instagram account of the 'No Kings' movement over the weekend raised censorship concerns. While Meta apologised and blamed this on a high volume of activity on the account, the movement stressed that restricting communications in the middle of polls is unacceptable. Now, at a time when the electoral prospects of Republicans are under a cloud, due to rising fuel prices triggered by the Iran war, Trump threw his weight behind Netanyahu for the October 27 Israeli general elections. Hinting that the US is not inclined to finish the job in Iran if another leader is elected as the Israeli PM, he described Netanyahu as strong, brave and brilliant. Also Read: CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das' judicial custody extended by two days Subsequently, Netanyahu used this endorsement to appeal to Israel's undecided voters. According to the Ipsos poll, nearly 32% of respondents said that Democrats could deal better with Israel and Gaza, as compared to only 25% others who reposed faith in Republicans. In another indication that Americans are no longer willing to extend blanket support to Israel, the poll showed that one-third of respondents called for ending all military support to Israel. Another 25% backed reducing military support. Only a small minority urged the US government to ramp up military assistance to Israel. Now, Israelis expressed mixed views of Trump's endorsement of Netanyahu. While some welcomed his support, many others accused him of interfering in the country's democratic process.
