Federal agents responded to a reported shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio. Local media reported one death and another victim

Federal agents responded to a reported shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday (October 20), US authorities said. Local media reports citing police reported that at least one person had died in the incident. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed the response through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying, "Additional information will be shared as it becomes available," the agency's Columbus office said.

According to local media reports citing police, one person was pronounced dead shortly after 2:00 pm local time. Another victim was also found at the scene, but authorities had not disclosed their condition at the time of reporting. Federal authorities have yet to release further details about the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting.

"We want to make it clear this was not an attack on the mosque," said Sgt. James Fuqua, who said one person was killed in the shooting. "There are multiple individuals in an apartment complex with some unknown dispute," he said. "We don't want to rush to judgment, but it's super important that I make it clear that this shooting had nothing to do with an attack on the mosque itself."

He added that one person had died from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. In a subsequent statement, an agency spokeswoman said preliminary information suggested that funeral attendees were leaving the Alrahma Mosque when shots were reportedly fired by an undetermined number of individuals. “One individual has been confirmed deceased.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) office in Columbus earlier said that its agents were responding to a reported shooting incident at a mosque. In its latest post they wrote, “Preliminary information indicates that funeral attendees had exited the Alrahma Mosque, located at 2226 Albert Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, when shots were reportedly fired by an undetermined number of individuals. One individual has been confirmed deceased. Earlier reports of a possible second victim have not been confirmed at this time. ATF Special Agents are assisting the Columbus Division of Police with the ongoing investigation. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
