Not the first time Trump mental health in question
This is not the first time Trump has appeared to wander off confusedly prompting questions about his mental health. In October last year, Trump seemed to forget where he was going as he walked through a room filled with dignitaries and a military band during a visit to Japan, at one point even leaving Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi behind.Since returning to office, the president has often appeared to lose track of his thoughts, his whereabouts, and even his grasp on the English language. The latest episode adds to a pattern that has drawn scrutiny since he returned to the White House in January 2025.Also read | ‘Ruh Roh’: Top US official mocks ‘Indian market collapse’ claim after Trump’s IT curbs. But did it? | FACT CHECK
Trump health questions mount
There have also been other concerns. First came the bruises on Trump's hands, which the White House downplayed as the result of shaking too many hands. When swelling appeared on his legs, he was quickly diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency. Trump and those close to him have always maintained that he is in excellent physical and mental condition, but ahead of the elections, it seems not everyone agrees, especially after multiple recent cases in which he appeared to struggle to stay awake during meetings. While Trump often lambasted his predecessor Joe Biden for being "sleepy," the 80-year-old has also been caught on camera sleeping, multiple times.
The other side: Was he greeting staff?
Not everyone accepts the viral interpretation. Reports suggest Trump was actually waving at support staff and technical crews who helped with his departure. In normal presidential and campaign travel routines, salutes and waves are usually directed toward distant security teams, Secret Service members positioned at the perimeter, or groups of media cameras and reporters kept far back from the aircraft for safety.

Ukraine rescued a soldier using an aerial drone in the first mission of its kind. The infantryman had been stuck on the frontline for 491 days, with Russian drones preventing him from being retrieved from the heavily mined terrain in the Kharkiv region. Kostiantyn Vlasenko had to chop off his own leg to survive frostbite. Russia repeatedly told him to surrender, but he continued to hide and hit back. Ukraine military finally came up with a way to rescue him, sending a drone on which he attached himself before being finally flown to safety. Vlasenko first hid in a cramped concrete pipeline with comrade "Baski". The pipe flooded last winter, forcing them to leave the place. The duo then took shelter in an abandoned school. Baski was killed on his 50th birthday. Vlasenko continued to hold out even as Russia sent a speaker announcing that he should surrender. The mission lasted one hour 14 minutes. Vlasenko was taken to the hospital, where he recalled his ordeal and the extraordinary rescue by Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov. "I have no words… A wonder. It is a miracle," he said.
Ukraine shared details of the mission
Ukrainian military posted about the mission on its Facebook page. "Due to intense enemy drone activity and the presence of landmines, evacuation using conventional unmanned ground vehicles was impossible," it said. Vlasenko was a truck driver at a quarry before the war broke out. After he learned about the Russian attack, he went to the draft office and demanded to be signed up. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of Ukraine's 30th Mechanised Brigade. He was sent to evacuate an injured soldier in the Kharkiv region and replace them at a position in a concrete drainage pipe.

The Ukrainian infantryman who was rescued by a drone spent nearly 500 days hiding in the heavily mined terrain in the Kharkiv region. Frostbite started rotting his legs; one of them fell off, and he was forced to cut off the other himself.

The 49-year-old responded, "Russian warship, go f*** yourself!" I love my daughter, but when I saw her lying about her opponent—and it’s not easy for a mother to say this—but Amy has a serious problem.

Notably, this is not the first such ad by the Ramaswamy campaign. The Republican candidate's backers have previously launched other personal attacks against Acton, who has been leading in polls over the last month. Other aspects of Acton's personal life have also resurfaced during the election, including an incident when police were called to her home in 2019 during what was characterised as a domestic dispute.
The ad's murky origins
The origins of the ad, which circulated on social media on Monday (Oct 19) night, were initially unclear. It lacks the mandatory disclosure of who paid for and authorised the commercial. It has not aired on TV or cable but has spread widely on social media.Connie Luck, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy, said in a statement on Tuesday, “We don't know what happened between Amy and her mother, who first spoke out about Amy in 2020, but we know that Amy Acton is a serial fabulist who has some serious problems with the truth that the public needs to be aware of before deciding who to entrust as governor.”Also read | US Midterms: Trump doubles down on $5,000 dividend as economists call it a 'half-baked political scheme'. He entered a not guilty plea."In the courthouse after they were charged, I went to give her a kiss, and she just turned her cheek away," Acton told The Vindicator seven years ago. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has promised a "massive" police deployment ahead of fresh demonstrations scheduled for October 24. The French government is also extending the curfews and tightening security following days of violent unrest linked to nationwide protests over rising living costs and deteriorating school conditions. PM Lecornu will also meet with representatives from five unions on Wednesday morning to discuss "ways and means to guarantee the essential freedom to demonstrate" according to a letter sent to the organisations, which noted some were attempting to subvert the protests with “unacceptable acts.” According to CBS News, the announcement followed an admission by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez that authorities had underestimated the unrest and lost control in some cities during Saturday's demonstrations. The whereabouts of US Representative Ilhan Omar have become a subject of political discussion in Minnesota ahead of the November midterm elections. The controversy follows reports of a federal investigation into alleged irregularities involving immigration paperwork and questions surrounding the four-term congresswoman's citizenship status. The situation reportedly intensified on October 12, when Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted a search at Omar's residence in Washington, DC. Her reported absence from public appearances since the incident has further fueled speculation about the investigation. According to media reports, federal agents executed a court-authorized search warrant as part of an investigation into alleged fraud involving immigration documents. The New York Post also reported that DNA evidence was collected from the residence. However, the allegations and the reported investigative steps should not be interpreted as proof of wrongdoing. Omar has strongly criticized the reported raid, describing it as an act of political intimidation. She has also accused President Donald Trump of repeatedly targeting her through what she characterizes as smear campaigns. "This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation," Omar said. Also Read: Trump considers removing White House press corps to restore historic indoor swimming pool
Trump mounts fresh attack on Ilhan Omar
Trump intensified his criticism of Omar on Tuesday, claiming that the congresswoman ‘could be jailed’ and making disparaging remarks about Somalia, her country of birth. Ilhan Omar faces scrutiny amid a reported federal investigation, Trump's latest remarks, and reports of her family being seen at her Washington, DC, home

Most of them shouldn't be here." "It's got no government. Got no police protection," Trump continued. “All they do is have people running around shooting each other. Then she comes over here and she say, and she wants to tell us how to run America.” "They keep talking about deportation. No, she could go to jail," Trump added. Trump says Ilhan Omar 'could go to jail' amid federal probe, calls Somalia a 's***house'

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly discussed removing journalists from the White House press briefing room and restoring a historic indoor swimming pool, a proposal that has gained support among some of his advisers amid escalating tensions between the administration and the news media. During a meeting in the Oval Office in late August, Trump reportedly urged Karoline Leavitt, who was then serving as White House press secretary, to move reporters out of the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. In front of several senior aides, he described the move as her ‘last legacy’. However, the proposal did not advance during Leavitt’s tenure. According to three people familiar with the discussions, Trump had raised the idea with her repeatedly over several months. Leavitt officially stepped down from her position on August 27. Trump has also expressed interest in restoring the indoor swimming pool installed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 as therapy for his polio-afflicted legs. President Richard Nixon later covered the pool to create space for journalists. Reporters with White House credentials currently work from a small office area connected to the briefing room. Although moving journalists outside the White House might appear to be a relatively limited change compared with Trump's broader campaign against the media, the proposal carries considerable symbolic significance. The press's physical proximity to the centre of US executive power has long reflected the role of independent journalism in a constitutional democracy. The move could also be difficult for future administrations to reverse. Trump has floated the idea since his first term, and a growing number of people around him are reportedly receptive to it. Some advisers believe journalists could be relocated to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building across the street, marking another escalation in the administration's relationship with the press. On September 27, Trump shared two images on Truth Social depicting the existing briefing room and a proposed swimming pool restoration. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey can withdraw from the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement only after 10 years from its entry into force, according to the full text of the 16-article pact published by Turkiye Today ahead of its consideration by the Turkish parliament. While the agreement’s collective defence commitment, under which an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, was already publicly known, the newly disclosed document clarifies the withdrawal procedure and the obligations of members to assist an ally under attack. “Any ‘Party’ may withdraw from this Agreement after 10 years have elapsed from its entry into force,” Article 16 states. Members are required to provide at least three months’ written notice through diplomatic channels, Turkiye Today reported. The agreement does not specify a fixed expiry date. Instead, it will enter into force once the final instrument of ratification is deposited with the alliance’s secretariat. Consequently, the 10-year withdrawal period will begin from that date, rather than the date the agreement was signed. The details emerged in Turkish media after Ankara submitted the agreement to parliament for ratification on Tuesday, news agency Reuters reported.
Duty to assist, flexibility on response
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement in Mecca on August 7. At the time, the three leaders announced the pact’s central commitment: an armed attack against one member would be treated as an attack against all. Plans for joint military exercises, intelligence sharing and defence production were also made public. The full text published by Turkiye Today provides further details on how the collective defence commitment would operate. Under the agreement, members must immediately assist an ally facing an armed attack or military aggression by another country or group of countries. However, the scale and nature of the assistance will be determined after evaluating the support required and the resources available to each member, including its military capabilities. The agreement does not prescribe a specific military response or a mandatory troop contribution. This allows each member flexibility in deciding how to support an ally under attack while maintaining the obligation to provide assistance.
Houthi attacks test the pledge
Missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia are emerging as an early test of how the alliance’s collective defence commitment could translate into practical military support. During an emergency meeting in Riyadh earlier this month, the three members agreed to ensure the rapid deployment of military forces and capabilities in the kingdom. Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said Islamabad was providing whatever support is needed to protect Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and holy sites. Speaking to Independent Arabia on Sunday, he described their protection as ‘paramount’ and ‘non-negotiable’ for Pakistan. However, he did not disclose the nature or extent of the assistance being provided. A Turkish official told Reuters that Ankara’s contribution was expected to be limited to military equipment, intelligence sharing and weapons systems. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has described the agreement as defensive, emphasising that Turkey would not send troops into another country to carry out attacks.
Different routes to approval
Domestic legal procedures will also influence how the three countries implement the agreement. Turkey requires parliamentary ratification of the pact, while separate parliamentary authorisation is necessary for troop deployments abroad. Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy, approves international treaties through royal decree rather than parliamentary ratification. Pakistan’s participation has prompted questions about parliament’s role and the possibility of the country becoming involved in the Yemen conflict. Islamabad’s Foreign Office has maintained that deployments under the agreement do not require parliamentary approval and are covered by existing laws and government procedures. The issue has historical significance. In 2015, Pakistan’s parliament supported Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity but declined to commit Pakistani forces to combat operations in Yemen. Islamabad has since maintained that troops deployed under the current arrangement would defend Saudi territory and would not cross into Yemen to launch attacks against the Houthis. The pact’s implementation will therefore depend not only on its collective defence provisions but also on the participating countries’ domestic approval processes, military capabilities and decisions about the extent of assistance they provide. Also Read: 'What's wrong with you? US President Donald Trump faced renewed criticism over his interactions with journalists after a series of tense exchanges in the Oval Office on Tuesday. The president interrupted reporters, issued a warning to one journalist and shushed another during an event announcing a new fraud whistleblower initiative. The confrontations prompted critics to question Trump's temperament and condemn his treatment of members of the press. One of the most heated exchanges involved Andrew Feinberg, White House correspondent for The Independent, who attempted to question Trump about the renovation and closure of the East Potomac Golf Course. Before Feinberg could finish asking his question, Trump interrupted him. “Wait, wait, wait, wait — quiet. Quiet! What’s wrong with you? Are you a sick person? Feinberg later responded on X, suggesting the president had already been introduced to him shortly before the exchange. “I had told him exactly who I was not five minutes before this exchange,” the reporter posted.
Watch the video here

Trump’s remarks draw criticism from political opponents
Trump's conduct quickly drew criticism from opponents and commentators, including former Republican congressman Joe Walsh. Reacting to the president's behaviour, Walsh posted, “25th Amendment,” referring to the constitutional provision that establishes procedures for transferring presidential powers and addressing situations in which a president is unable to discharge the duties of the office. Liberal commentator Molly Jong-Fast also criticized Trump's warning to Feinberg, questioning how the reaction might have been received if a different president had made the same remarks. “Imagine if Biden said this or Obama or Bush or anyone ……" Joanne Carducci, a liberal social media influencer known as JoJoFromJerz, also weighed in. She claimed Trump's behaviuor reflected a decline in his condition, although the article provides no medical evidence establishing that he has dementia. “Oh he’s f------ losing it,” she posted. “He’s showing his true rage more and more now as he slips further and further into dementia.” Other social media users mocked the president's behavior and drew comparisons with the criticism directed at previous presidential candidates. “They said Kamala Harris was too emotional to be president,” one X user posted.

Elon Musk ordered a slowdown of a military-grade version of Starlink used by Ukrainian forces, triggering alarm in Kyiv and confusion within the Trump administration, according to US officials and people familiar with the matter. The move came amid growing tensions between Ukraine, President Donald Trump and Musk. US President Donald Trump has described Marine Le Pen as France’s ‘conservative voice’ following widespread riots in the country, while stopping short of formally endorsing the far-right politician ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election. Trump’s remarks came as he continued to use unrest in France to reinforce his domestic political messaging on immigration and left-wing politics ahead of the US midterm elections next month. Asked by an AFP reporter in the Oval Office whether he would endorse Le Pen, Trump said, "Well, I don't know her, I haven't met her, but I thought she was badly treated. It would look like a weaponization to me." Le Pen, 58, was convicted of graft by a French court in March 2025. The ruling initially barred her from holding public office for five years, but an appeals court decision this year paved the way for her to contest the 2027 presidential election to succeed Emmanuel Macron. Trump has repeatedly accused the US justice system of being politically weaponised against him. He became the first former or sitting US president to be convicted of a crime in the hush-money case involving an adult actress. Referring to Le Pen’s political standing following the unrest, Trump said, "It would look to me like, you know, she was leading. But after this (the riots), she's definitely, she's the conservative voice."
Trump blames immigration for unrest in France
Trump continued to promote his administration’s interpretation of the French riots, which it has largely attributed to mass immigration. Describing the scale of the unrest, he said, “That wasn't a little bit of a riot, that wasn't a little bit of a protest, that was a full on revolution, and it continues.” The president had also addressed the situation during a campaign rally in Kansas on Monday (October 20), delivering a forceful criticism of France’s political and social climate. US aviation regulators have granted final approval to Boeing's long-delayed 737 MAX10, clearing a major hurdle for the largest aircraft in the company's MAX family and paving the way for deliveries expected to begin in 2027. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a certificate confirming that the aircraft complies with all applicable design and safety requirements, according to a statement from the US Department of Transportation. The decision follows the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX 7 in August and represents an important development in Boeing's efforts to strengthen its financial performance following years of operational and production challenges. "The FAA's decision follows a thorough review of the aircraft's design and safety requirements," said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “We will continue to hold Boeing to the highest safety standards as the company begins production of the 737 MAX-10.” Boeing expects to begin delivering the 737 MAX 10 to customers in 2027, several years later than originally planned.
Boeing 737 MAX 10 certification comes after years of delays
Boeing first introduced the 737 MAX 10 at the 2017 Paris Air Show. The aircraft completed its maiden flight in June 2021, with initial deliveries originally scheduled for 2023. However, the certification process faced repeated delays as regulators subjected Boeing's aircraft designs to heightened scrutiny following two fatal 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed a combined 346 people. Further scrutiny followed a near-catastrophic incident in January 2024, when a fuselage panel blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight, renewing concerns about Boeing's manufacturing standards and aircraft safety oversight. Also Read: US midterms 2026: With Republicans spending big, Bloomberg opens his wallet for Democrats. Here's how much he is pouring
FAA conducted extensive safety reviews
The approval followed extensive regulatory assessments, including thousands of hours of test flights and reviews of the aircraft's design and safety systems. "After extensive safety reviews, including thousands of hours of test flights, the team at the FAA is ready to approve this critical aircraft for sale," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. The announcement coincided with an expected visit by Duffy to Boeing's facility in Everett, Washington, where the manufacturer has expanded its production capabilities. In January, Boeing unveiled a new 737 MAX production line in Everett to supplement manufacturing operations at its existing facility in Renton, Washington. The aircraft had previously been assembled exclusively in Renton.
Boeing plans to increase 737 MAX production
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said at a Wall Street conference in September that the company aims to increase monthly production of the 737 MAX family to 52 aircraft in 2027. The target compares with the current monthly production rate of 47 aircraft authorised by the FAA. During his September 16 appearance, Ortberg said he expected certification of the MAX 10 very soon. He also highlighted the company's efforts to reach an agreement with its white-collar union to avoid a potential strike. The manufacturing outlook improved further after Boeing's Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace approved a new labour contract on October 1, removing one potential source of disruption. Regulatory concerns also briefly slowed the certification process in late September, when FAA officials paused proceedings over a software issue. Regulators subsequently determined that the problem did not pose a safety risk.
How the 737 MAX10 compares with other MAX aircraft
The 737 MAX 10 is the largest aircraft in Boeing's MAX family, offering airlines additional passenger capacity within the single-aisle aircraft segment. According to Boeing's website, the MAX 10 has a maximum seating capacity of 230 passengers. By comparison, the MAX 7 accommodates up to 172 passengers, while the MAX 8 and MAX 9 fall between the two models. The larger capacity could make the MAX 10 attractive to airlines seeking to carry more passengers on high-demand routes while continuing to operate single-aisle aircraft. For Boeing, certification represents a significant step towards expanding its commercial aircraft offering and increasing deliveries in the years ahead.

Boeing 737 MAX 10 certification comes after years of delays Boeing first introduced the 737 MAX 10 at the 2017 Paris Air Show. Here's how much he is pouring FAA conducted extensive safety reviews The approval followed extensive regulatory assessments, including thousands of hours of test flights and reviews of the aircraft's design and safety systems. Boeing plans to increase 737 MAX production Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said at a Wall Street conference in September that the company aims to increase monthly production of the 737 MAX family to 52 aircraft in 2027. How the 737 MAX10 compares with other MAX aircraft The 737 MAX 10 is the largest aircraft in Boeing's MAX family, offering airlines additional passenger capacity within the single-aisle aircraft segment.

As the US midterm elections approach, billionaire businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is once again stepping in with substantial financial support for Democrats, continuing a familiar pattern of large donations late in election campaigns. Bloomberg has contributed approximately $80 million during September and October to support Democratic candidates and aligned political groups, according to details shared by his team with The New York Times. Some contributions are still being distributed, and many are expected to appear in upcoming campaign finance disclosures. The donations are expected to make Bloomberg one of the largest publicly known donors supporting left-leaning political causes during this election cycle. “He believes in participation in our democracy,” Howard Wolfson, Bloomberg’s political adviser, said in an interview. “And obviously the scale of his participation, given his resources and his means, is greater than other people’s financially. But other people are participating in different ways.” Bloomberg's latest spending reflects his longstanding belief that financial resources can significantly influence electoral outcomes. His previous political investments have included more than $1 billion spent on his unsuccessful 2020 presidential campaign. “He is of the view that resources matter in campaigns,” Wolfson said. Still, Wolfson said that Bloomberg, 84, who exited elected office more than a decade ago, ‘expects a result’.
Bloomberg focuses on helping Democrats win the House
A central priority for Bloomberg is helping Democrats secure a substantial majority in the House of Representatives. The chamber is widely viewed as the party's strongest opportunity to gain control, and it has historically attracted considerable attention from the former mayor. Michael Bloomberg pours $80 million into Democratic midterm campaigns, targeting House races and helping candidates compete with Republican spending

US midterms 2026: With Republicans spending big, Bloomberg opens his wallet for Democrats. Here's how much he is pouring

With the November 3 US midterm elections fast approaching, Republicans are pouring money into congressional districts that President Donald Trump had won by double-digit margins in 2024. The spending emphasises the party’s growing concern about defending its narrow House majority. The advertising blitz reveals that the districts that were being considered safe for Republicans after Trump’s landslide presidential victory are now receiving significant financial reinforcements as Democrats seek to capitalise on economic discontent and dissatisfaction with the administration. Three Trump-aligned groups — MAGA Inc., No Going Back PAC and Safety and Affordability PAC — spent more than $163 million on advertising and airtime from September 1. More than $63 million, nearly 40% of that spending, was directed towards states and congressional districts which Trump had won by at least 10 percentage points in 2024.
Texas and Kentucky among the warning signs
Texas’s 15th Congressional District and Kentucky’s 6th are among the Republican-held districts drawing attention. Both were carried comfortably by Trump in 2024, yet they have seen substantial Republican-aligned advertising. If Republicans are spending heavily in districts considered safe, party strategists may be responding to opinion polls, fundraising trends or voter enthusiasm that suggests a shift in political environment. Six House districts Trump won by double digits that were being targeted by organisations linked to MAGA Inc. The advertising operation was aimed at 27 House districts, 20 of which were Republican-held.The fact is that Republicans are unwilling to risk losing districts that could become vulnerable if the national political climate deteriorates further.
Economic anxieties reshape the map
Inflation, tariffs and the administration’s handling of international conflicts have become central issues in the US midterms campaign, and Democrats are trying to turn these concerns into a broader referendum on Trump’s presidency among those who supported Republicans in 2024 but may be less enthusiastic about the party in a midterm election. Similarly, Montana’s 1st Congressional District, which Trump won by 12 points in 2024, was moved into the toss-up category, suggesting that electoral vulnerability is no longer confined to the traditional battleground districts that determine control of the House.
A defensive strategy with national stakes
Republicans argue that their advertising advantage and voter outreach can protect incumbents. The party also has an incentive to mobilise voters who turn out with enthusiasm for presidential elections but are less likely to participate in midterms. Democrats see chances to expand the map beyond districts previously considered competitive. Their challenge is converting dissatisfaction into votes while competing against well-funded Republican advertising operations. Since the control of the House is potentially determined by a handful of seats, spending in traditionally Republican territory could prove decisive. The final map will depend on whether Trump’s 2024 coalition remains intact or whether economic concerns and lower enthusiasm among Republican-leaning voters result in a backlash. The money trail offers an important indication, that the Republicans are preparing to defend territory they earlier expected to hold comfortably, while Democrats are trying to see how far can the red map be stretched.

Trump invokes controversial antisemitic trope while defending Senator Roger Marshall
Separately, Trump invoked a centuries-old antisemitic trope while defending Senator Roger Marshall, a Republican from Kansas who is seeking re-election, over criticism of his past medical debt-collection practices. Speaking at a rally with Marshall on Monday in Park City, Kansas, Trump said the senator's opponents had unfairly portrayed him as ‘some kind of a Shylock-type guy.’ The remark appeared to refer to reporting by The New York Times that examined Marshall's record of pursuing patients over unpaid medical bills during his decades-long career as an obstetrician-gynecologist. According to the newspaper's reporting, Marshall filed lawsuits against more than 700 patients with outstanding medical bills. The report also said he routinely charged an annual interest rate of 18 per cent and pursued measures including wage garnishments and the seizure of funds from patients' bank accounts. Trump did not mention The New York Times by name during his remarks. The term ‘Shylock’ comes from William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and has long been associated with antisemitic stereotypes portraying Jewish people as greedy or exploitative moneylenders. Its use in political discourse has repeatedly attracted criticism because of its historical associations.

Nigeria has launched a ten-year roadmap to deepen its capital markets, mobilise domestic and international investment, and support its ambition to build a US$1 trillion economy by 2030. Also launched was a national savings plan. The Nigeria Capital Market Masterplan 2.0, covering 2026 to 2036, sets out reforms to create a more diverse, efficient and transparent market and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional financial hub. The plans were launched by H.E. Kashim Shettima, Vice President, alongside Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Peter Vowles, the United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner to Nigeria, and Mark Napier, CEO, FSD Africa. The Masterplan was developed by Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with technical support from FSD Africa funded by the UK Government. Their support enabled the engagement of a consortium led by Genesis Analytics and Bourse Consult to support the development of the roadmap and its implementation framework. Speaking at the event, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, SEC Nigeria Director General, hailed the master plan as one that will help Nigeria deepen Nigerian capital markets to the scale needed to finance the country’s ambitious economic goals. "Every great economy has, at its heart, a capital market that turns the savings of ordinary people into the factories, roads, homes and businesses that create jobs. Nigeria has the people, the enterprise and the ambition. What we are now building is a market to match them," said the DG. Emphasizing the historic alignment of economic reforms and regulatory empowerment, Dr. Agama noted that the Master Plan was deliberately launched alongside the National Savings Scheme to harness home-grown resources for national development. "Savings are the raw material of investment, and a nation that saves through its own capital market builds with its own resources," Dr. Agama added. The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, represented by Paul Healey, Head of Green Growth and Private Sector Development at the British High Commission, said: “The UK is proud to have funded FSD Africa’s support for the development of Nigeria’s Capital Markets Masterplan 2.0. This ambitious, Nigerian-led reform will help mobilise more domestic and international investment and connect capital with commercial opportunities in businesses and infrastructure. “Our support forms part of the wider UK and Nigeria's Strategic Partnership, which has growth and jobs at its heart. By strengthening Nigeria’s capital markets and deepening links between our financial sectors, we can create new opportunities for investment, jobs and shared prosperity in both our countries.” Mark Napier, CEO, FSD Africa, lauded the master plan as key in guiding Nigeria’s ambitions to deepen her capital markets for greater growth and job creation. “Our support for Nigeria’s new Masterplan is grounded in the principle that capital markets need to work for the wider economy. With its scale and regional importance, Nigeria has a significant opportunity to mobilise more domestic and international capital towards businesses, infrastructure and sustainable growth”. In Zambia and Ethiopia, our support to strengthen the country’s financial market architecture and address key regulatory and market constraints, helped lay the foundations for greater capital mobilisation, including into sectors such as renewable energy.” He added. FSD Africa’s support has focused on strengthening the link between capital-market development and Nigeria’s wider economic priorities, including infrastructure, SME growth, financial inclusion and sustainable development. NCMMP 2.0 seeks to position capital markets as a driver of wider economic transformation, helping to channel long-term capital towards national priorities including infrastructure, energy, climate resilience, SMEs, financial inclusion and job creation. To support these ambitions, proposed reforms include measures making it easier for businesses and state governments to raise capital, expand retail and diaspora participation, attract more foreign institutional investors, strengthen sustainable finance, and support the development of digital and tokenised assets. The Masterplan is structured around five pillars covering regulatory clarity and enforcement, modernising market infrastructure, broadening the range of issuers and financial instruments, diversifying the investor base, and strengthening institutional and professional capacity. Each pillar is supported by a sequenced implementation plan with clear ownership, timelines and measures of success. It also builds on lessons from the previous Capital Market Masterplan, which supported a number of significant reforms while leaving areas for further progress. The earlier plan achieved an overall activity completion rate of 63%, with financial inclusion, regional integration, sustainable finance and the mobilisation of capital to priority sectors among the areas identified for continued progress. The Masterplan also sets out ambitions to strengthen Nigeria’s regional role through greater cooperation with other African markets, cross-border capital raising and listing frameworks, and closer alignment with initiatives under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

He said. Also Read: After France unrest, Italy tightens security amid violent protests in Milan “We have seen how sustained capital market development can help create conditions for greater capital mobilisation.

The High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Mr. Manish, has called for a formal migration and mobility agreement with Cyprus to ensure legal, predictable pathways for Indian nationals while protecting their rights, amid a sharp increase in arrivals through student permits and temporary work arrangements. Speaking in a recent interview with the television station Alpha, Manish stressed that Indians in Cyprus arrive through official channels. “Whatever Indians you are seeing here, all of them are coming here legally,” he said. “They are not coming illegally. They are all coming here legally after permits, visas, work permits, student permit, which is given by your ministries and department, but the challenge is to have a framework agreement for legal and predictable migration.” He noted that numbers have doubled, with private colleges actively recruiting from India for foundation courses and other short programmes. Many of these institutions, sometimes described as operating from shopping malls or single rooms, have drawn scrutiny. Students enter on permits, often transition into the labour market in sectors such as construction, agriculture and delivery, and are permitted to work limited hours under existing rules. Manish observed that many perform cash work without formal contracts and receive wages far, far lower than the European workers, as employers seek non-EU labour to fill shortages at lower cost.

Under European Union rules, citizens of member states enjoy free movement and equal treatment in employment. Third-country nationals, including Indians, require specific visas or permits and can face different conditions regarding wages, social protections and working hours. While such distinctions are embedded in national and EU legislation designed to prioritise the domestic and European workforce, they can create practical disparities. Temporary or student-linked arrangements may leave individuals with incomplete coverage under employment standards, heightening risks of exploitation by intermediaries once permits expire and overstays occur. Manish expressed concern that large cohorts completing one-year foundation courses may not progress to degree programmes, leaving them vulnerable once student status ends. “Ultimately, for me as a High Commissioner, my core interest and concern is that the Indians who are coming here to live, work, study, their life, their rights has to be protected. We want a regulated migration,” he said. He described ongoing discussions with Cyprus’s Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection toward a draft agreement that would establish clearer legal pathways. The text was not finalised, but remains under consideration. Cyprus has benefited from Indian workers meeting genuine labour needs, while India has seen growing economic ties, including foreign direct investment routed through the island and expanding private-sector collaboration in technology and services.

More than 100 members of the US Congress have called on the FBI to investigate an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois as a ‘potential federal hate crime’. In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, the lawmakers said 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis drove to the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) temple in Aurora on 11 October intending to open fire, but fled after his rifle malfunctioned. He was arrested the same day and charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful weapons possession. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who led the letter and whose family was at the temple that day, was joined by 104 other lawmakers, including the entire Illinois House Democratic delegation, every Indian American member of Congress, and Senators Dick Durbin, Tammy Duckworth, Andy Kim and Chris Van Hollen. “The alleged combination of targeted racial hatred, a religious setting, and preparations for mass violence demands a comprehensive federal response,” the letter states. “We appreciate the FBI’s reported assistance to local investigators and urge the Bureau to ensure that potential hate-crime violations receive explicit attention.” The lawmakers requested a written response by 29 October on whether the investigation is treating the case as a federal hate crime examining both racial or ethnic and religious bias, and whether it is coordinating with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. They also asked about any examination of online activity, coordination with others, and the FBI’s broader capacity to monitor threats against Indian Americans, Hindu Americans and other South Asian communities. The letter cites a documented rise in online hostility. A September report by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate identified more than 542,000 anti-South Asian posts on X between January 2025 and June 2026, with monthly volume rising roughly 240% from January 2024 levels. A Carnegie Endowment survey found that 48% of Indian American respondents had encountered racist posts targeting their community very or somewhat often since the start of 2025, and one in four had been called a slur. The lawmakers also criticised recent Trump administration messaging. They pointed to a Department of Homeland Security graphic depicting a Sikh man with the caption “Get off our roads, you don’t know how to drive Mr Singh,” later removed after criticism, and a Department of Education post declaring “Make College Football Great Again” after Texas Republican politician Bo French complaint about South Asians at a University of Texas football game. “We believe such messaging risks lending governmental legitimacy to racial and religious stereotyping,” the letter says. “Federal agencies should make clear that debates over immigration or public safety never justify collective suspicion of Indian, Sikh, Hindu, or other South Asian communities.” The letter pointed, "no one should fear being targeted because of their ancestry, appearance, or faith, and no congregation should have to wonder whether gathering for worship will make its members targets of mass violence. We urge the FBI to investigate the evidence fully, pursue all applicable offenses, and provide affected communities with a clear account of the steps being taken to protect them.”
