The United States and Israel have drawn up detailed plans for a possible new wave of attacks against Iran following the American midterm elections, according to US officials and others familiar with the discussions, The New York Times reported. As preparations for a short but intensive military campaign advance, the two countries have increased their training exercises, with aircraft flying over Iraq to rehearse strike maneuvers. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week to discuss potential new attacks, according to American officials. Potential targets could include Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and its stockpiles of missiles and drones. Some officials believe another major offensive could inflict enough economic damage to push Iran’s already strained economy to the brink and compel Tehran to make diplomatic concessions after nearly eight months of conflict. However, there are substantial doubts about whether renewed military action would achieve better results than the first phase of intense US-Israeli strikes, which took place between February and April. Those attacks contributed to rising global energy prices and inflation, weakened security across the Middle East, and significantly depleted the Pentagon’s supply of missile interceptors. It also remains uncertain whether President Donald Trump will authorize another round of strikes. Throughout this year, he has repeatedly rejected proposals to resume large-scale combat operations, including an attack planned earlier this month when US and Israeli forces were reportedly close to being ready. All officials interviewed for this report spoke anonymously to discuss sensitive military planning. Iranian officials have warned that any renewed attacks would trigger a broader response. They have threatened to expand their targets beyond commercial shipping and regional energy infrastructure to include data centers and underwater internet cables. According to Iranian officials, the next phase of fighting would not be brief or confined to a limited set of targets. Meanwhile, the United States is building up a substantial military force that is expected to be fully deployed by early November. At the same time, diplomatic efforts are continuing, with American negotiators using the possibility of renewed warfare as leverage to push Iran toward meeting US demands concerning its nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz. So far, however, Iranian negotiators have resisted making concessions on the nuclear issue, arguing that the matter should be postponed until a later stage of negotiations. Some US military planners believe an intensive three-day campaign could inflict sufficient economic damage to force Tehran to reconsider its negotiating position. Other Western officials remain unconvinced. They point out that American officials have repeatedly forecast Iran’s economic collapse, yet the Iranian government has continued to withstand mounting economic pressure. Also Read: 'You are a dummy, you are a stupid person': Trump loses temper with CNN, ABC reporters after questions about Russia sanctions
Israeli election could complicate military plans
Israel’s October 27 election could introduce another complication into the proposed military operation. A White House official said Wednesday that the administration does not comment on military plans ‘that may or may not exist’. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has been ordered to pay $25 billion in New Mexico after a judge ruled that the technology giant repeatedly misled the public about its handling of Facebook users' personal data. The ruling, delivered on Wednesday following a two-week trial earlier this year, marks the largest fine ever imposed on Meta over its business practices. "The lies extend beyond Facebook's data practices as well," the judge said, adding they went to the heart of Facebook's core business practices. Meta's chief lawyer, CJ Mahoney, criticised the decision, arguing that the penalty would severely restrict the company's ability to operate in the state. Mahoney said the ruling made it all but impossible to do business in the state of New Mexico. The company intends to appeal, a move Mahoney said will be successful.
Cambridge Analytica scandal at the centre of the lawsuit
The New Mexico lawsuit originated from concerns over Facebook's handling of user information and the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which exposed how personal data from millions of Facebook users was used for political consulting. Cambridge Analytica obtained information from Facebook users and incorporated it into its political consulting work, including activities connected to the 2016 US presidential election, which resulted in Donald Trump winning his first term. New Mexico officials argued that Meta, which was still operating under the Facebook name when some of the events occurred, had repeatedly misrepresented how it collected, shared and protected users' personal information. The state also accused the company of misleading the public about how it benefited from content containing hate speech and how its rules against such material were enforced. The jury found that Meta had intentionally misled the public on those claims as well. Meta rejected the allegations, arguing that the lawsuit threatened freedom of expression online. "At its core, this lawsuit seeks to impose a tax on speech to enforce new rules for what people can say online," Mahoney added. Also Read: US midterms: Democrats sue Trump administration over alleged 'threats and intimidation' ahead of election, Musk issues warning to Dems
Jury finds millions of violations of state law
Lawyers representing New Mexico challenged statements made by Meta executives over several years, particularly assurances that users' personal information was not shared with or accessed by third parties without their consent. The state argued that the company's conduct affected the entire population of New Mexico, which has approximately two million residents. A jury found that Meta had violated state laws more than 40 million times, providing the basis for the substantial financial penalty. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said the verdict demonstrated that large technology companies could be held accountable for their actions. "For too long, powerful technology companies have operated as though their size and influence put them beyond the reach of the law," New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said on Wednesday. “Today's result makes clear that no corporation is too powerful to be held accountable.” State lawyers had sought penalties of up to $40 billion. Meta, meanwhile, argued that any fine exceeding $3.4 billion would be unconstitutional.
Judge cites more than a decade of misconduct
Judge Francis Mathew issued a forceful ruling on Wednesday, setting the penalty at $25 billion, an amount broadly comparable to Meta's profits in a single quarter. In his decision, the judge said the company's violations and misrepresentations about the use and sharing of Facebook users' data were willful and continued for more than 11 years, covering the period from 2010 to 2021. The judge also cited internal communications involving senior executives, including Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. Communications between senior executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, were designed to mislead the public, Judge Mathew wrote in his order. Although the total potential penalty calculated from thousands of alleged violations of state law reached $219 billion, the judge reduced the amount to $25 billion.
Meta faces additional legal pressure over data privacy and child safety
The New Mexico ruling follows a $5 billion penalty imposed by the US Federal Trade Commission in 2019 over Facebook's data privacy practices. New Mexico has also pursued separate legal action against Meta over the safety of its social media platforms for children. Earlier this year, the state fined the company almost $1 billion for allegedly misleading the public about the safety of its platforms for young users. In that separate case, the judge overseeing the proceedings compared Meta to an industrial polluter, describing the company's alleged harm to children as the psychological harm and sexual exploitation of children. California and several other states have also brought lawsuits against Meta over comparable concerns, including the impact of its platforms on young users. Those states reached a settlement with the company just days after a trial began that had been expected to last several weeks.
Meta plans to appeal the record fine
Meta intends to challenge the $25 billion ruling, setting up a potentially lengthy legal battle over the extent of its responsibility for misleading statements and alleged violations of state law.

Democratic Party leaders have filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump and members of his administration, accusing federal officials of using ‘threats and intimidation’ against state and local election authorities ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The lawsuit was filed in federal court on Tuesday by Democratic governors, congressional leaders and other party organisations. The defendants include Trump, Attorney General Todd Blanche, the Justice Department and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, among others. The complaint alleges that federal officials have attempted to interfere with election administration through repeated pressure on officials responsible for overseeing voting procedures across the country. "Justice and Homeland Security officials have sought to bolster their interference efforts through a persistent stream of threats and intimidation directed towards state and local election officials across the country," the complaint reads.
Democrats challenge federal request over California voter rolls
Democratic officials criticised a federal government request that California withhold ballots from more than 20,000 registered voters over questions about their citizenship. According to the lawsuit, the request was made with just 48 hours' notice. The Democrats described the government's list of potentially ineligible voters as remarkably slapdash, comparing it with a similar effort in Nevada. In that state, officials initially identified approximately 16,000 people on voter rolls as potential noncitizens. That figure was later reduced to 185, and Democrats argued that Nevada subsequently determined all those individuals were US citizens. The lawsuit asks the federal court to declare the administration's actions unlawful, arguing that they violate the constitutional separation of powers. It also seeks an order preventing federal officials from continuing to unconstitutionally impose themselves upon election administration procedures. The Democratic organisations warned that the administration's conduct could discourage eligible citizens from participating in elections, particularly naturalised Americans. "Such threats intimidate and coerce election officials who aid and urge registered voters to cast ballots, as well as lawful voters, particularly naturalized citizens, who seek to exercise their most fundamental right," the Democratic entities wrote. Also Read: Explosions heard in Iran’s Hormozgan province near Strait of Hormuz: State media
Trump administration's election policies face legal challenges
Trump and his allies have repeatedly raised concerns about alleged voter fraud, including claims that large numbers of noncitizens have participated in federal elections. However, official data indicate that documented instances of noncitizen voting are rare. Several Trump administration initiatives aimed at changing election rules before the midterms have also encountered legal and procedural obstacles. These include proposed restrictions on voting by mail. The US Constitution gives states primary responsibility for administering elections, although federal law establishes certain requirements and protections. Federal law also restricts systematic changes to voter registration lists within 90 days of a federal election, subject to applicable exceptions. The lawsuit adds to the broader legal battle over the administration's authority to influence election procedures as both parties prepare for the congressional contests.
Elon Musk threatens Democrats over potential congressional investigations
In a separate political development, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump, issued a warning to Democrats planning investigations into his business interests and role in the federal government should they gain control of Congress in November. Musk responded on Wednesday to a Politico news report discussing Democratic plans to investigate his activities if the party wins the midterm elections. "Live by the sword, die by the sword," Musk wrote on X, the social media platform he owns. He followed the post with another warning directed at those seeking to investigate him. "Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets," Musk added on the platform, which he regularly uses to promote conspiracy theories. Musk is a major financial supporter of Trump's Republican Party, an adviser to the president and a prominent government contractor through his aerospace company, SpaceX. He also leads Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer. After helping finance Trump's return to the White House in the 2024 election, Musk led a controversial initiative to reduce federal spending and cut government employment. The effort pushed nearly 300,000 employees out of work, according to the supplied report.
Democrats could gain investigative power in Congress
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but Democrats are expected to have a strong opportunity to win the House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections. A Democratic majority in the House would give the party control of powerful investigative committees, which can issue subpoenas and compel witnesses to provide testimony under applicable congressional rules. Such a shift could place Musk under increased scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest involving his companies, government contracts and advisory role in the Trump administration. Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren has raised concerns about the relationships between Musk's business interests and his government connections. "The sheer number of conflicts of interest are astounding," influential Democrat Zoe Lofgren was quoted as saying in Politico's report.
Election dispute and Musk controversy add to midterm tensions
The lawsuit over election administration and Musk's warning to Democratic lawmakers underscore the political tensions surrounding the approaching midterm elections. Democrats are challenging what they describe as federal interference in state-run election processes while preparing to use congressional oversight powers if they secure control of the House. Meanwhile, Musk's public statements signal a potential confrontation with Democratic lawmakers over investigations into his business activities and government relationships.

Democrats sue Trump and administration officials over alleged election interference ahead of the 2026 midterms as Elon Musk threatens congressional investigators

Democrats challenge federal request over California voter rolls Democratic officials criticised a federal government request that California withhold ballots from more than 20,000 registered voters over questions about their citizenship. Also Read: Explosions heard in Iran’s Hormozgan province near Strait of Hormuz: State media Trump administration's election policies face legal challenges Trump and his allies have repeatedly raised concerns about alleged voter fraud, including claims that large numbers of noncitizens have participated in federal elections. Elon Musk threatens Democrats over potential congressional investigations In a separate political development, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump, issued a warning to Democrats planning investigations into his business interests and role in the federal government should they gain control of Congress in November. Democrats could gain investigative power in Congress Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but Democrats are expected to have a strong opportunity to win the House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections. Election dispute and Musk controversy add to midterm tensions The lawsuit over election administration and Musk's warning to Democratic lawmakers underscore the political tensions surrounding the approaching midterm elections. After no explosives were found in the three vehicles they were travelling in, they were released on police bail barely a day later. https://www.wionews.com/videos/uk-s-fairford-fumble-suspects-released-iran-blamed-now-two-re-arrested-1792604151133/embed Three days later, the British-Iranian dual national was arrested in London and also charged with preparation of a terrorist act. However, he too was released on police bail almost immediately. Now, it is worth noting that a suspect can be released from police custody in the UK until the first court hearing, subject to certain conditions. While the anti-terror police said its decision to grant bail was grounded in experience and strategy, US President Donald Trump openly criticised the move. A week after the Fairford incident, the US pulled out all its bomber jets from the base, a move that Trump attributed to a possible Iranian threat. This base had been used by the US military during the West Asia war to strike Iran. However, Tehran has denied any link to the alleged plot. A few days earlier, UK PM Andy Burnham accused Iran over the Fairford terror plot. His government also imposed an immediate asset freeze and travel ban on two Iranians for their alleged role in planning and conducting attacks overseas. As the mystery surrounding the alleged Fairford terror plot deepens, the case has turned into a major test for British security and counter-terrorism policing.

The re-arrest of two suspects in the alleged Fairford terror plot has renewed questions about the investigation, possible Iranian involvement and Britain's counter-terrorism response.

US midterms 2026: What polls and prediction markets indicate about Congress

The US Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from suspending hormone therapy and other gender-affirming treatments for transgender people held in federal prisons. The decision marks a rare victory for transgender rights at the conservative-leaning court. The justices issued a one-sentence order without providing an explanation for their decision. “This is a critical ruling for our clients and all transgender people in Bureau of Prisons custody,” said Li Nowlin-Sohl, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project. “The denial of medically necessary health care, including gender-affirming health care, to people in prison is a violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. We will continue to defend the rights of our clients and all incarcerated people.” The ruling comes amid a series of Supreme Court decisions allowing the Trump administration to pursue restrictions affecting transgender Americans. Since Trump returned to the White House last year, the court has permitted a ban on transgender people serving in the military and upheld a policy requiring US passports to reflect an individual's sex assigned at birth. Earlier this year, the court also upheld state laws prohibiting transgender athletes from competing on girls’ sports teams.
Trump’s executive order targeted gender-affirming treatments
The legal dispute stems from a policy Trump promoted during his 2024 presidential campaign. His campaign aired television advertisements criticising Democratic nominee Kamala Harris over her approach to transgender issues. On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order seeking to prohibit any medical procedure, treatment, or drug intended for the purpose of conforming an inmate’s appearance to that of the opposite sex. Following the order, the Federal Bureau of Prisons introduced a policy allowing psychotherapy and psychiatric services for incarcerated people diagnosed with gender dysphoria. However, the policy excluded hormone therapy, surgical procedures and what officials described as social accommodations. Such accommodations can include access to gender-affirming clothing and makeup. The administration's restrictions were subsequently challenged in court, with both a federal district court and the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit blocking the policy from taking effect in the short term. Also Read: US midterms 2026: Trump's approval rating hits record low as Democrats gain ground
Federal appeals court questioned the administration’s policy
In an order issued last month, the DC Circuit concluded that the administration's policy was likely arbitrary and capricious because prison officials had failed to adequately evaluate their own experience providing gender-affirming care under the previous policy. The administration maintained that earlier treatment practices and accommodations raised security and prison-administration concerns that outweighed whatever limited benefits they had.
Transgender prisoners challenged treatment restrictions
The case was brought by three incarcerated people who said they had received hormone therapy for years before the new restrictions were introduced. They argued that the administration's policy represented a sudden departure from decades of practice and would terminate treatment for nearly 1,000 people held in federal custody. The American Civil Liberties Union also challenged the government's justification for the restrictions, questioning the claim that gender-affirming care posed security risks in prisons. The American Civil Liberties Union told the Supreme Court that the assertion of security concerns was odd given that BOP has not pointed to a single security incident relating to its provision of this treatment over the past 30 years. The challengers argued that abruptly ending medically necessary treatment could violate the constitutional rights of transgender people in federal custody.
Thomas and Alito dissent from Supreme Court order
Conservative Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from Wednesday's order. Neither justice provided an explanation for opposing the decision. The absence of a detailed explanation was particularly notable because the case had been fully briefed and had been ready for the justices to decide for nearly two weeks.Although the Supreme Court's order did not include a written rationale, it temporarily prevents the Trump administration's restrictions from taking effect while the legal dispute continues. The decision stands out against the broader pattern of recent court rulings that have allowed the administration to implement several policies restricting transgender rights. For transgender inmates and their advocates, the order represents an important legal development in the ongoing fight over access to gender-affirming medical care in federal prisons. The broader dispute also raises questions about the government's authority to restrict medical treatment for incarcerated people and the constitutional protections afforded to individuals in federal custody.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a record low in a new national poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena University, just weeks before the midterm elections. Widespread dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy, the war in Iran and rising gasoline prices has weakened his standing among voters. Only 36 per cent of likely voters said they approved of Trump’s performance as president, while 59 per cent disapproved. The result marks his lowest approval rating in any Times/Siena poll. Disapproval was particularly strong among independent voters, with more than two-thirds expressing dissatisfaction with his presidency. Democratic candidates have also strengthened their position in the congressional elections. Likely voters now favour Democrats over Republicans by 11 percentage points in their congressional districts, representing a slight improvement for Democrats since the previous month. The congressional preference measure is widely considered an important indicator of political momentum ahead of the midterms.
Economic concerns weigh on Republicans
The political landscape presents significant challenges for Republicans as voters express growing frustration with economic conditions under the Trump administration. Three-quarters of Americans described the economy as fair or poor, while a majority blamed the president for the deterioration in their financial circumstances. The survey found that 69 per cent of voters disapproved of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, while 65 per cent disapproved of his approach to the war in Iran. Nearly three-quarters also disapproved of his handling of gasoline prices, which have climbed above $4 a gallon. Despite the unfavorable national outlook, Democrats face considerable obstacles in their efforts to regain control of the Senate. Their strategy involves winning competitive races in Republican-leaning states such as Texas, Iowa, Alaska and Ohio, all of which Trump carried by double-digit margins in the 2024 presidential election. Other surveys indicate that several key Senate contests remain closely contested.
Democrats make gains among key voter groups
Growing economic dissatisfaction appears to be weakening some of the support that helped Trump secure a second term. Over the past year, Democrats have improved their standing among men, younger voters and Hispanic voters, recovering support from groups that contributed to Trump's victory two years ago. Paul Gettings, a Republican who lost his job managing a logistics company in June, said he voted for Trump in 2024 but intends to support Democratic candidates in the midterms. He pointed to rising gasoline prices, the war in Iran and what he considers aggressive immigration enforcement in Simi Valley, California, where he lives. “I’m very disillusioned with the Republican Party and how they can continue to support Trump,” said Gettings, 62, who is unemployed. “He’s turned into a politician just like the rest of them and it’s a lot of empty promises.” Trump’s approval rating was even lower among all registered voters, including those less likely to participate in the elections. In that group, just 34 percent approved of his job performance. Also Read: US midterms 2026: From Pooja Sethi to Vivek Ramaswamy, here are Indian-origin candidates to watch out for
Public perception of Democrats improves
As opinions of Republicans have deteriorated, perceptions of the Democratic Party have improved across several measures over the past two years. A majority of likely voters now identify Democrats as the party representing the working class, reversing the advantage Republicans held in 2022. Voters also consider Democrats more likely to keep their promises, marking another shift from two years ago, when Republicans led on that measure. Across nearly every demographic group, majorities now view Democrats as more understanding of ordinary Americans and better equipped to address their concerns. Vince Cordero, 25, an independent voter from Oak Lawn, Illinois, said he plans to vote for Democrats this year. He expressed concerns about prejudice toward Hispanic Americans and criticized the Republican Party's approach. “The Republican Party is, if anything, causing more problems for people like me: being Latino, feeling the weight of that kind of prejudice that I think the Republican Party tends to kind of portray," said Vince Cordero, 25, an independent in Oak Lawn, Ill., who said he plans on voting for Democrats this year. “I also think the Democratic Party deserves an opportunity to see if they’re really up to snuff.”
Democrats lead on cost of living and the economy
The survey found that Democrats hold a 15-percentage-point advantage over Republicans in voter trust on the cost of living, currently the most important issue for voters. Democrats also lead Republicans by eight points on the economy, an area that has traditionally been a political strength for Trump. Their advantage has grown since September on questions involving foreign conflicts and artificial intelligence. However, Trump continues to enjoy substantial support among his core Republican base. Approximately 82 per cent of Republicans said they approved of his presidential performance and signature policies, including the war in Iran and tariffs. Sheila Murdock, a retired nurse from Shelley, Idaho, who has already cast an absentee ballot for Republicans this year, defended the administration's trade policies despite concerns about higher prices. “People are upset, ‘Oh, Trump put these tariffs on people and now our food costs go up,’” said Sheila Murdock, a retired nurse from Shelley, Idaho, who has already voted absentee for Republicans this year. “Well, yes, but if you look at the bigger picture and what it eventually does, it makes things better.”
Immigration returns as a major election issue
Immigration is once again becoming a significant concern for voters as the midterm elections approach. The percentage of voters identifying immigration as their top issue increased to 10 per cent, up from 6 per cent in September. The shift is particularly evident among Republicans. Nearly one in five Republican voters now identify immigration as their leading priority, almost twice the proportion recorded the previous month. Democrats continue to hold an advantage over Republicans on voter trust regarding immigration, an issue that has historically favoured the GOP. However, that lead has narrowed since September. The poll found that 46 per cent of voters trust Republicans to handle immigration, while 50 percent expressed greater confidence in Democrats.
Voters remain dissatisfied with both parties
Despite Democrats' improved electoral position, the survey highlights continuing dissatisfaction with their party. Only 28 percent of voters said they were satisfied with the Democratic Party, eight percentage points below the share expressing satisfaction with Republicans. Much of the discontent within the Democratic Party comes from its own supporters. The poll found that 43 per cent of Democratic voters were dissatisfied with their party, compared with just 16 percent of Republicans who expressed similar dissatisfaction with the GOP.

Also Read: US midterms 2026: From Pooja Sethi to Vivek Ramaswamy, here are Indian-origin candidates to watch out for Public perception of Democrats improves As opinions of Republicans have deteriorated, perceptions of the Democratic Party have improved across several measures over the past two years. “I also think the Democratic Party deserves an opportunity to see if they’re really up to snuff.” Democrats lead on cost of living and the economy The survey found that Democrats hold a 15-percentage-point advantage over Republicans in voter trust on the cost of living, currently the most important issue for voters. “Well, yes, but if you look at the bigger picture and what it eventually does, it makes things better.” Immigration returns as a major election issue Immigration is once again becoming a significant concern for voters as the midterm elections approach. Voters remain dissatisfied with both parties Despite Democrats' improved electoral position, the survey highlights continuing dissatisfaction with their party.

Trump's approval rating hits a record low as economic concerns, Iran war tensions and high gas prices boost Democratic prospects ahead of midterms

US President Donald Trump should look beyond appearance and political loyalty when choosing his next White House press secretary, his first press secretary, Sean Spicer, has warned. Speaking after Katie Zacharia’s five-day stint in the role ended, Spicer said backing the president’s agenda was not enough for a job that also demands government experience, media handling and the ability to manage the White House’s communications.
Spicer says media briefings are only part of the job
Speaking to News24 anchor Andrew Bolt, Spicer described Zacharia as a smart individual who had done a good job advocating Trump’s “America First” agenda. However, he cautioned against treating those qualities as the main requirements for the position.“I caution the White House and the president, in particular, for just focusing on that part of the duties,” he said.According to Spicer, public appearances account for only around 20 per cent of the job. The press secretary must also coordinate with government departments, manage meetings, handle announcements and understand how the administration functions. He urged prospective candidates to assess their own experience before accepting the role.“If you're telling me that you don't have a real fundamental grasp of how the government operates, you've never worked at the press corps, then this might not be the best fit for you,” Spicer said.
Zacharia’s brief stint drew scrutiny
Zacharia’s tenure came under scrutiny after her first and only press briefing lasted about 14 minutes, with questions taken from three reporters, according to The Associated Press. Her halting delivery attracted criticism, while questions also emerged about her professional credentials. A Pepperdine University law graduate, Zacharia had described herself as a lawyer while appearing on conservative television programmes, despite not having passed a bar exam or obtained credentials to practise law in the United States. She said she had worked as a lawyer in China and was offering legal analysis, not legal advice.Trump had also suggested she reconsider the position, saying she was being “brutalised by the media”.
Spicer knows the pressure firsthand
Spicer resigned in July 2017 after six months as press secretary during Trump’s first term. He later called it the most demanding job of his career, despite 27 years in the military.“That is the most intense job I will ever ever have,” he said. His latest comments come as the White House considers who should take over the role, with his central point being that political loyalty alone cannot prepare someone for its demands.

Russia is preparing to send its first diesel shipment to the United States on Thursday (Oct 22), marking a fresh development in energy ties between Moscow and Washington. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said the tanker would carry 40,000 metric tonnes of fuel, with the paperwork for the delivery nearing completion. The announcement follows an agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump to resume diesel supplies to international markets. The deal comes amid strained relations between Washington and Kyiv.
First shipment marks start of wider supplies
Novak said the Thursday shipment would be followed by additional deliveries, although he did not disclose the port from which the tanker would depart.“Additional shipments will follow, of course. There were agreements reached between the two leaders. We will meet the United States' needs, to the extent of our capabilities,” RIA news agency quoted Novak as saying.Trump has outlined a much larger supply plan, saying Russia would initially export 300,000 metric tons of diesel, equivalent to around 2.25 million barrels. He also announced plans for 500,000 tons in November, followed by another 1 million tons “immediately thereafter”.The proposed volumes are significant, given that the US exports approximately 1.5 million barrels of diesel every day.
Export restrictions lifted after refinery attacks
Moscow had imposed a self-directed ban on diesel exports to address domestic shortages caused by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries. The restrictions were lifted on October 9 following the agreement with Trump.Putin discussed the arrangement with US special envoy Steve Witkoff during talks in St Petersburg on Wednesday. Witkoff thanked the Russian leader for lifting the restrictions, while Putin said the agreement had contributed to a 5-6 per cent decline in global diesel prices.“That’s an example of us working together, I want to thank you for that,” Witkoff said in televised comments.Putin also said Russia was preparing several tankers for successive deliveries, adding that the financial arrangements needed to be in place.Beyond diesel, Moscow has indicated it could supply the US with fertilisers in “large quantities”, suggesting the agreement could extend into other areas of trade.

eMudhra, an Indian digital security company, is facing scrutiny after researchers found serious weaknesses in eight digital certificates linked to its website security services. The private keys behind these certificates were so weak that researchers could recover them in less than a second. The weakness could have allowed attackers to create fake security certificates and make fraudulent websites appear genuine to internet browsers. In response, major technology companies, including Google, Apple and Mozilla, took steps to block the affected certificates. However, eMudhra has said its Indian digital signature certificate (DSC) and eSign services remain unaffected.
What went wrong at eMudhra?
eMudhra provides digital signatures, electronic authentication and website security services. Israel goes to the polls on October 27 with results deciding the future of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel votes through proportional representation based on the nationwide vote and it is highly unlikely that any single party would come even close to the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-seat parliament, or Knesset. There are three possibilities for polls: The parties will begin negotiations to try to reach the 61-seat threshold. After the official announcement of the results, President Isaac Herzog will consult with party representatives and name a candidate who has the chance to form a government -- not necessarily the party with the most seats Following the previous election in November 2022, it took Benjamin Netanyahu 58 days to form his government. Polls show that Netanyahu's right-wing and far-right coalition and the opposition bloc, whose most prominent figure is former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, are neck and neck, with approximately 50 to 52 seats each. This increases the chance of defections and other unexpected shifts in alliances. Israel also has two new right-wing parties that are seen as scratching the threshold of entering parliament If no bloc manages to secure 61 seats, a candidate could attempt to govern without a majority but rather through support on an ad hoc basis by other lawmakers. In this scenario, lawmakers from Israel's Arab minority -- who make up 20 percent of the population. Polls show that two Arab-Israeli lists, the Joint List and Raam, could win 12 to 14 seats in total. Raam, led by Mansour Abbas, a kingmaker in the past, has stated its willingness to work with Eisenkot's bloc, and the Joint List has offered to provide a "safety net" for any coalition that ousts Netanyahu from power. Given how divided Israeli politics is, a national unity government may seem unlikely. But it could still be an option if the election does not produce a clear majority. One possibility is that Netanyahu could drop his far-right and ultra-Orthodox allies and join forces with Gadi Eisenkot. The two have similar views on several security issues. Such a government would not include Arab parties. A poll published on October 16 found that 55 per cent of Israelis would prefer a national unity government over holding another election if no clear majority emerges. Israel has tried such an arrangement before. In 2020, after three elections in less than a year, Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, another former general, agreed to share power. The deal included a plan for the two to take turns as prime minister. However, the partnership lasted only about a year before breaking down, leading to another election. Media reports say President Isaac Herzog is working behind the scenes to bring Netanyahu and Eisenkot together if the October 27 election results in a deadlock. However, both sides could face opposition to such a deal. The opposition is campaigning against Netanyahu and has strongly criticised his record and leadership. If no candidate is able to form a government, Israel could have to hold another election. Israel went through four elections between April 2019 and March 2021 because political parties could not agree on a stable coalition. After the election, the president will choose a candidate who he believes has the best chance of forming a government. The candidate will normally have 28 days to form a coalition, with a possible 14-day extension. If the deadlock continues, there are other steps that could eventually lead to another election.

Israel heads to the polls on October 27 with Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc and the opposition projected to be closely matched. With 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-member Knesset, four scenarios could follow: a coalition, minority government, national unity government or fresh elections.
