A female senator of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right wing party sparked outrage on Thursday (Dec 28) when she said that young women's "first aspiration" should be to have children. Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy&nbsp;is emphasising on reversing Italy's declining birth rate and promote the traditional family structure. The party is also clamping down on same sex-parenting.

"My mother always used to tell me ... you must always remember that you have the opportunity to do whatever you want, but you must never forget that your first aspiration must be to be a mother yourself," senator Lavinia Mennuni said.

The senator was speaking during a talk show on La7 TV channel and was sitting next to a Catholic archbishop. Mennuni said that religious institutions needed to make maternity "cool" again in addition to encouraging young people to marry early.

"There is a need, let's say a mission, because I think it is a beautiful thing, (for women) to bring children into the world who will be the future citizens, the future Italians," said the 47-year-old lawmaker who has three children herself.

This is not the first time Mennuni sparked controversy. Just last week she proposed a bill seeking to prevent school directors from stopping Catholic-themed activities like setting up Jesus Christ nativity scene and so on.

According to reports, Friday's attack is one of the biggest air attacks since the war started in the winter of February last year. Russia reportedly launched 158&nbsp;missiles and 36 drones against Ukrainian targets.&nbsp;

ABC News quoted Jeff Asher, a crime analyst, who said that nearly 13 per cent drop in homicide rate is expected by the end of 2023 than 2022.

However, the decreased homicide rate does not mean Americans feel more secure. A Gallup poll released last month revealed that more than three-quarters of the respondents felt that crime has increased in the country and more than half felt&nbsp;the same about crime in their area.

In its report, ABC News cited data obtained from its own review and said that as they headed into last week of the year, 10 largest cities in the US showed seven municipalities with double-digit year-over-year declines in homicides this yea. In New York City, the drop was 11 per cent. In Los Angeles, it was 16 per cent while it was 13 per cent in Chicago.

Russia on Saturday (Dec 30) accused Ukraine of carrying out a "terrorist attack" on civilians in Belgorod and claimed that Kyiv used prohibited cluster munitions in an emergency meeting with the UN Security Council, which was being held at Moscow's request. Meanwhile, the country's defence ministry vowed revenge for the deadly strike on the Russian city. 
 
Russia said that the city of Belgorod was attacked by Ukraine with missiles and rockets in which at least 21 people were killed and dozens were wounded, which included 17 children, as per the local authorities. 
 
It was "a terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime against a civilian city," said Russia's ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya. "In order to increase the number of casualties of the terrorist attack they used cluster munitions," he added, further claiming that a sports centre, an ice rink and a university were targeted by Kyiv.

Russia vowed revenge for the strike on Belgorod and added that the so-called cluster bombs were used by Ukraine’s military in the attack. 
 
“This crime will not go unpunished,” said the ministry, in a statement regarding the strike on the city which was located 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of Russia’s border with Ukraine. 
 
As per a New York Times report, which cited Russian authorities, at least 18 people – including two children - were killed in the attack on the Russian city. While, over&nbsp;100 people have suffered injuries.

Quickly retorting to Russia's allegations, Ukrainian allies said that the war was started by Russia. Ukraine's ambassador to the UN Serhii Dvornyk said that "as long as this war, unleashed by the Kremlin dictator, endures the toll of death and suffering will continue to grow."

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the 828th Brigade, 261st Brigade, and 460th Brigade, all comprised of active duty troops, will resume their routine training assignments.&nbsp;
