The Japan Meteorological Agency said that a series of 21 earthquakes registering 4.0 magnitude or stronger struck central Japan in succession over 90 minutes. It said that the strongest jolt measured 7.6, which struck the Noto region in Ishikawa prefecture around 4:10 pm (0710 GMT), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.&nbsp;

<h2>Far-eastern Russia on 'alert'&nbsp;</h2>

Russia's Sakhalin island and the Pacific city of Vladivostok were on "alert" because of a possible tsunami risk. Sakhalin is an elongated island north of Japan and Vladivostok is Russia's main Pacific city.&nbsp;

Authorities in Sakhalin said the island's west coast could be affected by tsunami waves. They also said that they would not cause a major threat to life on the island. So far, no evacuation orders have been issued.&nbsp;

Emergency services called on people to "remain calm". "Coastal parts of the western coast of Sakhalin may be affected by tsunami waves," emergency services said, further adding that "at the moment... the population is not being evacuated, since the expected height of the wave is no more than 50 centimetres".&nbsp;

The scale of destruction caused by the earthquake is still emerging as news footage showed sunken boats at a port, toppled buildings, locals living without power amid freezing overnight temperatures, and countless charred homes. 
 
Speaking to AFP on Tuesday, a meteorological agency official said all the tsunami warnings and advisories which were imposed after the earthquake were lifted.

The official said that small changes to tidal levels can still take place.

Meanwhile, 120 people have been waiting to be rescued in Japan. The country's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said, "At the moment, we have confirmed there are 120 cases of people are waiting to be rescued. We also have reports on evacuation. As of 11:00 am local today, we have confirmed that there are a total of 955 evacuation centres in Ishikawa Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture. A total of 57,360 people have evacuated.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday said the major quake had caused "extensive" damage and led to numerous casualties. 
 
"Very extensive damage has been confirmed, including numerous casualties, building collapses and fires," he&nbsp;told reporters while stating that it is a "race against time" to rescue victims.

"We have been making all efforts to gather information since yesterday evening, but the blockage of roads means it is extremely difficult to access the northern part of the Noto peninsula. An inspection from above via helicopter has shown widespread damage including roads cut off, landslides and fires," he said.&nbsp;

"Now that the tsunami warning has been lifted, we will be able to secure sea transport routes, and we have been working continuously since last night to mobilise not only land transport but also air and sea transport to get the necessary supplies and rescue personnel to the area," Kishida added.&nbsp;

"It has been extremely difficult to reach the northern part of Noto Peninsula due to the blockage of roads," said Kishida, after a disaster response meeting.&nbsp;

<h2 lang="en-US">155 earthquakes hit Japan</h2>

The Japan Meteorological Office said the country has been hit by 155 earthquakes, which included a 7.6-magnitude jolt and another having magnitude of over 6, since Monday (Jan 1). 
 
The JMA stated that the magnitude of most of the quakes was greater than 3 while the strength moderated gradually. It added that six strong jolts were still felt in the country early Tuesday (Jan 2). 
 
The US Geological Survey (USGS) meanwhile stated that the magnitude of the earthquake, which hit Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, was 7.5. 
 
At least 1.2 metres (four feet) high waves hit the port of Wajima on Monday, and multiple smaller tsunamis were reported elsewhere.

The local energy provider said that nearly 32,700 households were without power on Tuesday (Jan 2).

As per the local media, four bullet trains were halted for hours on Monday&nbsp;in the affected region as nearly 1,400 passengers remained stuck. Mobile phone coverage and flights also reportedly remained disrupted as many convenience stores were closed. 
 
Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said that nearly 1,000 military personnel are prepared to go to the region and around 8,500 others have been kept on standby. They also dispatched 20 military aircraft to survey the damage. 
 
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the country can face more quakes in the next two to three days.

As per local media reports, nearly 100 buildings were burned in central Japan.

He acknowledged that the pilots have worked hard throughout the year and have either reached or are very close to their 900 flying hours in the last 12 months. A pilot from Cathay Pacific told SCMP that the airline might continue to cancel flights due to the shortage of experienced cockpit crew. The pilot has accused Cathay Pacific of not having enough staff to handle the operating flights within the allotted hours. "To make a short haul roster hit 900 hours, we are doing several take-offs and landings that we have never seen before," he said. He warned that extending the flight time limitation beyond 900 hours in 12 months would lead to more pilots quitting. "Other airlines spent years to retain their workforce and experienced [staff], but Cathay Pacific is chasing people away," he said. Pilots at Cathay Pacific also complained about not having "a work-life balance." Israel-Hamas war: Israel military entering the third phase of operations, say officials

As unrelenting bombardment continues to rock Gaza, an Israeli Army spokesperson has warned that the war against Hamas which is nearing its three-month mark will continue throughout 2024.

Even as international calls for ceasefire continue, Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari on Monday, said the army was preparing for "prolonged fighting" that is expected to last "throughout this year".

<h2>Relentless bombardment&nbsp;</h2>

On Monday night and into Tuesday morning,&nbsp;eyewitnesses reported Israeli missiles flying towards Rafah city and shelling around a major refugee camp, Jabalia.&nbsp;

Talking to AFP, a Gaza resident identified as Sami Hamouda said, "It's the worst year of our lives."

In the published paper, the scientists said that future warfare is set to undergo major changes, primarily characterised by “increasingly fierce competition between opposing sides in the electromagnetic spectrum battlefield”.

Mia Schem, a 21-year-old French tattoo artist who was among the people abducted by Hamas militants during the Oct 7 attack, has revealed the "only reason" she wasn't raped during her captivity.

Speaking during an interview recently released on Israeli TV, the woman who spent 54 days in captivity said that the only reason she wasn't raped was because her captor's family was right outside the door.

"His wife was outside the room with the children," she said, adding, "That was the only reason he didn’t rape me."

<h2>A harrowing experience</h2>

Talking about her harrowing experience as a captive, Schem said that her tormentor kept her "closed in a dark room, not allowed to talk, not allowed to be seen, to be heard, hidden" for most of her captivity in Gaza.&nbsp;

She claims that she was starved and taunted by the captor's family.

As per The Times Of Israel, she also said that her captors would taunt her and lie to her about her release, only to dash hopes and tell her "you're like Gilad Schalit, a year, two years, three years." Schalit, an IDF soldier, was captured in 2006 and released five years later&nbsp;in 2011.

Previously, a video of her went viral on social media, where, as she was getting released, Schem said that she was treated "good" in Gaza. However, in another interview later, she said that the statement was made under duress, they "stuck a camera in my face and said 'Say that we treated you nicely, that people in Gaza are nice and good.' What else was I supposed to do?"

The city's military administration said that many fragments of downed rockets were seen on the roads of various districts which included residential buildings. It was reported that Russia launched Kinzhal missiles. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that power supply was not available in several areas of the capital as&nbsp;250,000 consumers were left in darkness.

Ukraine's national Ukrenergo energy company said, "250.000 consumers were without electricity in Kyiv and its region following Russian strikes."

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that explosions occurred and the capital was on fire nearly an hour after the military administration of the region said that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones were detected in the airspace of the city.

Hours before, the military had issued a warning regarding the 20 Russian strategic bombers which were airborne. Taking to Telegram, military officials said that after takeoffs were detected from the far northern Olenya airfield and southern Engels airbase, multiple Tupolev Tu-95MS bombers were present in Russia's airspace.
