Super Typhoon Yagi hits Vietnam; killing four, injuring 78

Super Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday (Sep 7), uprootingthousands of trees and sweeping ships and boats out to sea, killing at least four people and injuring 78 others.

Thetyphoonhit Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces, packing winds exceeding 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

A report by the news agency AFP said that inHai Phong, metal roof sheets and commercial sign boards were seen flying across the city sky as thetyphoonhit.

Four deaths in Vietnam

As of 5:00 pm (local time), the government saidfour people had died and 78 had been injured due tothe typhoon. A report by Reuters citing state media said that around a dozen people were missing at sea.

Further inland in Hai Duong,a man was killed in the street after heavy winds brought down a tree as the storm approached landfall, AFP reported citing state media.

Before hitting the mainland, thetyphoonunrooted hundreds of trees on Co To island, about 80 kilometres from mainland Quang Ninh.

Several office buildings, schools and houses on the island were unroofed by the powerful winds.Signboards lay scattered around the island, while electrical lines were snapped and tangled by the wind, AFP reported.

Authorities said that the typhoonwas the most severe to hit the island in decades.

Two killed due to typhoon in China

Before hitting Vietnam, Yagi made a landfall in China'ssouthern island of Hainan where it reportedly killed two people and injured dozens.

State broadcaster CCTV said Yagi brought winds of more than 230 kilometres (143 miles) per hour, uprooting trees and prompting the evacuation of around 460,000 people.

The typhoon also killed 16 people in the Philippines,having formed east of the archipelago earlier in the week.
