Tillerson said the Trump administration is determined to deepen ties with India.

Even as India and Russia get set to conduct tri-services military exercise in the eastern port city of Vladivostok, US secretary of state said today the Malabar military exercise sent a strong message to the world.

Speaking at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washinton, Tillerson said India and US defence ties are growing.

"India must take leadership role in regional security," he said, adding, "security and stability is important for economic growth."

"India-US are working towards shared security goals," the US secretary of state said.

Tillerson added that the Trump administration is determined to deepen ties with India.

On Afghanistan, Tillerson said India is a "partner of peace" in the region.
