Hajj 2024: Turkish pilgrim undergoes life-saving brain surgery in Saudi Arabia

A 70-year-old woman from Turkey who is attending the Hajj in Saudi Arabia underwent a life-saving brain surgery. A report by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Sunday (June 16) said that the womansuffered a cerebellar haemorrhage due to an arteriovenous malformation in a critical area of the brain.
The surgery was performed by a team at theNeurosciences Center of King Abdullah Medical City, part of the Makkah Health Cluster. The SPA report said that the medical team intervened urgentlyto relieve pressure on the brain by drilling a hole in the skull and inserting a drainage tube.
Woman's health steadily improving
X-rays revealed an arteriovenous malformation, which the team treated using advanced medical techniques. There were no complications during the surgery.

The 70-year-old regainedconsciousness and was removed from the respirator. SPA further reported that her health was steadily improving, and arrangements were being made to enable her to complete Hajj under full medical supervision.

Hajj, one of the world's biggest religious gatherings, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all Muslims with the means must perform it at least once.Around1.8 million Muslims are taking part in the annual pilgrimage this time, and temperatures in Saudi Arabiahave pushed well past 40 degrees Celsius.

At least 19 Jordanian and Iranian pilgrims died while on the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, authorities from both countries said on Sunday.
Saudi authoritieshaveimplemented heat mitigation measures, including climate-controlled areas. They also distribute water and offeradvice to pilgrims on protecting themselves from the sun.
