Israeli justice officials said on Wednesday (June 5) that the country was phasing out the use ofmilitary-rundetentioncamps for Palestinians captured during the Gaza war where rights groups have alleged there has been abuse of inmates. State attorneys told the Supreme Court that inmates held at theSde Teiman site would be gradually transportedto permanent holding facilities, the news agency Reuters reported.
The Sde Teiman site was opened following Hamas' unprecedented attack against Israel in October last year that sparked the Gaza war. Reuters reported that the transfers had startedand most prisoners would be relocated within a couple of weeks.
On Wednesday, state attorneyAner Helman, responding to a petition filed by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, told the Supreme Court that 700 inmates had already been moved to Ofer, a military stockade in the West Bank.
Another500 were slated to be transferred in the coming weeks, leaving 200 at Sde Teiman.
Reuters further reported that Israel was also investigating the deaths ofPalestinians captured during the Gaza war as well as the Sde Teiman facility.
In the latest news from the Gaza war, the Israeli military on Wednesday announceda new military campaign against Hamas in centralGaza. This came as Palestinian health officials said that at least44 Palestinians were killed in Israeli military strikes in centralGazaStrip areas since Tuesday.

The Israeli military, meanwhile, said jets were hitting Hamas militant targets in centralGaza while ground forces were operating "in a focused manner with guidance from intelligence" in the area of Al-Bureij- a refugee settlement.
