Four guards detained at Brazil G20 Summit over 2022 plot to kill President Lula

Brazil police Tuesday (Nov 19) detained four security personnel guarding the ongoing G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in a case related to an alleged 2022 plot to assassinate then President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
News agency AFP quoted Brazil police as saying that the four “were arrested in Rio, where they were participating in the security operation for the G20 leaders’ meeting.” A source told the news agency that a police officer was also detained.
All four suspects were “mostly soldiers with special forces training,” said Brazil’s police. However, they didn’t comment on how they ended up being part of the security team guarding the summit.
The Brazilian authorities are linking their arrest to an alleged “coup” aimed to prevent elected leader Lula from assuming the office. The operation was carried out to “dismantle a criminal organisation responsible for planning a coup d’etat to prevent the government legitimately elected in 2022 elections from taking office,” said a police source.

The “coup” or “murder” plot was allegedly meant to be carried out on December 15, two weeks ahead of his official inauguration as the country’s president. The alleged plot involved “the murder of the candidates to the presidency and vice presidency,” the statement said.

The plot also involved a plan to assassinate a Supreme Court judge, it added.

“They faced potential charges of violently trying to overthrow the government, coup-plotting, and being part of a criminal organisation,”according to police sources.
They added that the alleged killers possessed “advanced military operational” know-how.

There was major political chaos in the South American country following the defeat of incumbent president Jair Bolsonaro in October 2022. Thousands of his supporters stormed governmentbuildings in Brasilia on January 8, 2023, to protest against the victory of left-wing leader Lula.
Following the mayhem, several cases and investigations were opened by the Lula administration.
