The US State Department while unveiling the annual report on international religious liberty said China's treatment of Tibetan Buddhists had deteriorated.
After US Senate passed a resolution on Tibet to defend Tibetan Buddhists, an American diplomat said China remains a troubling country for religious freedom.
Last month the Senate had passed a resolution which sought to protect the "inalienable right" of Tibetan Buddhist religious leaders, including their right to choose a future 15th Dalai Lama.
"Situation for Tibetan Buddhists that continues to be a very difficult situation for them ... For Christians, for Falun Gong practitioners. China remains a very, very troubling country on religious freedom," US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback said.
The move to express solidarity with Tibetan Buddhists was widely welcomed by the Tibetan administration in exile based in Dharamshala. The political head of the exiled administration called it a "powerful message to the international community and to China."
The US Senate's decision was opposed by China who said it amounted to “interfering in China’s internal affairs”.
