Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a crucial state visit to the Maldives on July 25–26, marking his first trip since President Mohamed Muizzu took office on a strongly anti-India platform in 2023. The visit comes as part of India’s broader effort to reset its ties with neighbours and reassert influence in the Indian Ocean, amid growing Chinese presence in the region.
Muizzu, who won elections with the "India Out" slogan, had previously bypassed New Delhi in favour of China and Turkey for his early diplomatic visits. His government has questioned the presence of Indian military personnel, originally stationed in the Maldives for humanitarian missions, fueling local distrust.
