<p>A new study has revealed that air pollution is creating a hindrance in the mating of fruit flies because females are unable to recognise the males' scent.</p>

<p>Female fruit flies use the scent of pheromones which is emitted by males to select them for mating, however, ozone pollution has disrupted the ability of males to emit their characteristic odour, researchers stated.</p>

<p>The study reflects how contaminated air is becoming a hindrance in the reproduction of fruit flies and other insects, and may lead to a decline in population.</p>

<p>“Everyone knows that we are facing insect decline, and so far the reason was pesticide use and habitat loss. But we think that we should also consider oxygen pollutants,” said Markus Knaden, who is an evolutionary neuroethology researcher at the Max Planck Institute as well as the study's lead author, which was published in the journal Nature Communications.</p>

<p>The team of Knaden tested Drosophila fruit flies' nine different species by exposing half the males from every species to clean air and the other half to an atmosphere in which ozone levels are at 100 parts per billion.</p>

<p>The scientists discovered that the males kept in the atmosphere with higher ozone levels began emitting lesser pheromones and faced trouble in attracting female partners.</p>

<p>“When we expose male flies to ozone, then suddenly it took them much longer to convince the female to mate,” Knaden said.</p>

<p>“What’s more, emitting pheromones also helps males fend off other males from trying to reproduce with them. But being exposed to ozone led to males smelling less like males, and a rise in the number of attempts to mate between males,” he added.</p>

<p>A Polish daredevil defied gravity and logic when he successfully landed his plane on a helipad at the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel in Dubai. Pilot Lukasz Czepiela made aviation history by becoming the first person to achieve the feat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The helipad measured only 27 metres wide, 212 metres above the ground of the 56-story building. To land the helicopter, Czepiela specially modified his light aircraft to stop in just 21 metres. He had been planning the stunt since 2021 and had to stick 650 test landings for it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Landing at the height of 200 metres is completely different from landing on the ground...I had to fully trust my own skills. On the helipad, there was no room for mistakes," said Czepiela, reflecting on the stunt.&nbsp;</p>

To land the helicopter, Czepiela specially modified his light aircraft to stop in just 21 metres. He had been planning the stunt since 2021 and had to stick 650 test landings for it. "Landing at the height of 200 metres is completely different from landing on the ground...I had to fully trust my own skills. On the helipad, there was no room for mistakes," said Czepiela, reflecting on the stunt. “The biggest challenge was the lack of any external points of reference, which is usually found at an airport where you have hundreds of meters of runway." Energy drinks company Red Bull sponsored the heroic act and took to Instagram to share the video, which has garnered over 180,000 likes and 3.2 million views so far. <p><strong>GATE 2023 Results:&nbsp;</strong>The Indian Institute of Technology has declared the results for GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2023 at 4 PM on Thursday, March 17, 2023. Candidates can check their results on the official website of IIT Kanpur, gate.iitk.ac.in. The candidates who appeared for the GATE exams on February 4, 5, 11 and 12, can check their GATE 2023 results. The response sheets for the exams came out on February 15 and the answer key on February 21. The GATE 2023 scorecards will be available from March 21, 2023. GATE is a crucial examination for Indian students who wish to pursue Post-Graduation courses from prominent universities in India and abroad. There are 29 subject papers in GATE. However, clearing GATE is not enough as students also have to clear interview rounds after clearing the written test.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>How to Check GATE 2023 Results?</h2>

<p>Candidates should have their registration ID, email ID, and password to access and download their GATE 2023 results from the IIT Kanpur GATE 2023 login portal called GOAPS. The GATE 2023 scorecard will be valid for three years from the result announcement date. The IIT uses a normalization method to convert the raw score obtained by candidates to GATE scores, based on which the results are declared. Here’s how you can check GATE 2023 results:</p>

<p>Archaeologists discovered the skeletal remains of a Roman aristocrat in what was described as a “truly extraordinary” find in a 1,600 years old hidden cemetery in northern England. The ancient lead coffin is thought to have contained the remains of a late-Roman aristocratic woman. Additionally, the team during their dig near the town of Garforth in Leeds also unearthed remains of more than 60 men, women and children who lived there more than&nbsp;thousands of years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a statement published by the Leeds City Council, on Monday (March 13) the remains of 62 people, including 23 children were found last year. The cemetery might include people from both the late Roman and early Saxon eras as evidence of their burial customs was found in the graves. It could also indicate early Christian beliefs as well as Saxon burials. The team of archaeologists also found personal possessions such as knives and pottery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The skeletal remains of the aristocrat are believed to be of a high-status woman from the later years of the Roman Empire. David Hunter, principal&nbsp;archaeologist with West Yorkshire Joint Services, in the statement said that the “lead coffin itself is extremely rare, so this has been a truly extraordinary dig.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview with CNN, Hunter also spoke about how the dig began after a commercial developer submitted an application for planning permission to the council. Subsequently, an archaeological survey of the site was conducted where they found the “very rare” lead coffin. “The lead sheeting is the lining of a larger wooden coffin so it’s a very high status Roman body,” he added. However, the precise location of the cemetery has not been revealed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The archaeologists also hope that the site will help them gain an insight into the largely undocumented and significant transition between the fall of the Roman Empire which took place around 400 AD and the establishment of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms which came after. “This has the potential to be a find of massive significance for what we understand about the development of ancient Britain and Yorkshire,” said Hunter, in a press release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The presence of two communities using the same burial site is highly unusual and whether their use of this graveyard overlapped or not will determine just how significant the find is. When seen together, the burials indicate the complexity and precariousness of life during what was a dynamic period in Yorkshire’s history.” The discovery which was made last spring has been revealed only now since the dig is complete and the team needed to “keep the site safe” for initial tests, the city council explained in the statement.&nbsp;<br />

<h2>A radio presenter at the age of 12</h2>

<p>Mary McCoy's record-breaking career started back in 1951. She took part in a talent show at the radio station KMCO when she told presenters that she wanted her very own show. And four months later, her dream came true. At just 12 years old, McCoy started working as a radio presenter for five days a week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to Guinness on Tuesday, McCoy, now 85, said that it was her dream to get into the entertainment business. "I started out singing at talent shows and I was asked to audition for a radio show. They liked what they heard and I started working at KMCO Radio on 20 April 1951 doing a 15-minute singing programme," McCoy said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In August 1951, I had the pleasure of becoming a radio presenter/DJ, and although the radio station has changed ownership (KIKR and now KSTAR) I have maintained this job,” she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, McCoy continues to work hard and presents a two-hour Country Classics show six days a week on K-Star Country. She has also been inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Sharing the stage with Elvis Presley</h2>

<p>One of the most memorable moments of Mary McCoy's over seven decades career is sharing the stage with Elvis Presley — the "King of Rock and Roll." An up-and-comer at the time, in 1955, Presley’s band even backed McCoy up as she performed several numbers to the audience. Speaking to The Bulletin newspaper, the radio presenter recalled how Presley tripped and hit his head while making his way to the stage.</p>

<p>“I don’t know how he performed that night with a huge goose egg on his forehead, but he didn’t disappoint the fans,” she laughed.&nbsp;<br />

<p>A team of Swedish and Norwegian palaeontologists have unveiled one of the oldest fossils of Ichthyosaurs — an extinct marine reptile that thrived during the dinosaur age. The fossils were discovered on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the Arctic and provide a deep insight into the species, with the potential to rewrite history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists found 11 vertebrae and 15 bone fragments on the frigid-cold island, along a river channel. Afterwards, they conducted geochemical, computerised micro-tomographic and bone microstructural analyses and posited that the fish-like reptiles had evolved earlier than the world's first mass extinction event which took place nearly 252 million years ago.</p>

<p>"The implications of this discovery are manifold, but most importantly indicate that the long-anticipated transitional ichthyosaur ancestor must have appeared much earlier than previously suspected," said Benjamin Kear, lead author of the study published in the journal Current Biology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers, however, added the caveat that more fossils will be needed to confirm if the ichthyopterigians were swimming in the seas before the galactical doom.</p>

<p>The earlier theory suggested that land-based reptiles with walking legs ventured into the open sea after the mass extinction event. Over time, the early amphibious reptiles became more efficient at swimming and modified their body parts such as limbs to flippers to become permanent sea-dwellers.</p>

<p>The discovery of the fossils, however, disputes the theory. Scientists say&nbsp;the magnificent creatures predated the extinction event by more than 20 million years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to studies, some of the Ichthyosaurs reached up to around 70 feet in length, rivalling some of Earth's largest whales. However, their genesis always remained a mystery before the recent discovery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While dinosaurs dominated the land, Ichthyosaurs stood on top of the food chain in the oceans. The domination in the marine habitat continued for over 160 million years.</p>

<p>The inundation of Burketown and other communities continued&nbsp;as the flood water slowly began to recede. The Queensland Police said on Tuesday that major flooding was still occurring in the declared disaster area and floodwater heights across the catchment were still subject to change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Water reserves and food supplies are good, and resupply continues as required. Residents from Burketown are still instructed to conserve water usage and monitor advice from Burketown Shire Council," the police added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Senior Sergeant Adrian Rieck from the Mount Isa District Disaster Coordination Centre, meanwhile said, that current conditions still posed a threat to residents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rieck said, the centre "is closely monitoring the flood water as it moves throughout the entire catchment and is in contact with all communities and stations that may be at risk and ensuring preparations are in place for everyone’s safety.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Support is available to affected communities and a number of air assets, including the RACQ Life Flights AW139 helicopter, are stationed nearby and on standby for health emergencies, and the transport of food, water and medical supplies," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The senior sergeant also said it was still unsafe for displaced people to return to their homes and police remind residents to limit movement in the flood water due to unseen hazards and recent crocodile sightings.&nbsp;</p>

Dr George Koop, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) made the revelation saying the trend had been spotted amongst college children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In 2021, there has been an uptick, particularly among women. Now it turns out on college campuses women are actually binge drinking more than men, for the first time in history,” said Koob while talking to the Washington Examiner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When quizzed what was the reason behind such an uptick, Biden's alcohol czar attributed it to the pent-up demand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's what we call the alcohol deprivation effect. People tend to really rebound in drinking after a period of not drinking."</p>

<p>Binge drinking is when a woman consumes four drinks or more in a single evening. As for men, it is considered a binge drinking session when five drinks or more are&nbsp;consumed. Several studies have reported that women face higher health risks when drinking excessively.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is not safe for women to be drinking more than one standard alcoholic drink a day. A standard alcoholic beverage can be a pint of beer or one glass of wine or one shot of any liquor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“When you go past a standard drink, you really are getting to the point where alcohol ultimately becomes a toxin. You can easily overdose," said Koob.</p>

<p>According to NIAAA, the increase in binge drinking after the pandemic presents an anomaly for the researchers. At the beginning of the millennial, around 38 per cent of women and 48 per cent of men reported binge drinking.</p>

<p>A Czech man claimed a remarkable feat of human human endurance&nbsp;after he took a dive beneath Switzerland's Lake Sils without a wetsuit and emerged from its 50 meters icy depth.</p>

<p>David Vencl, 40, took a plunge to 52.1 meters in a signle breath. The feat follows David's entry into the Guiness Books of the World Record in 2021 when he swam through the length of a frozen Czech lake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vencl dived through a hole in the ice. He then retrieved a sticker from a depth of 50 meters to prove his feat and re-e,rhed through the same. He spat some blood, sat down for a minute and then opened a bottle of champagne, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A later visit to the hospital confirmed there was nothing serious.</p>

They’re just one of four types of pollutants that might be present in the water coming out of your taps and into your reusable bottles. <p>On average, the bottles harboured as much as 20.8 million CFUs of gram negative bacteria. The spout and screw-top lid bottle were the most infected with 30 million CFUs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For comparison, a toilet seat has 515 CFUs. Meaning the bottles carried bacteria four times that of a computer mouse, 14 times of a pet bowl, and yes, 40,000 times more than a toilet seat.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The human mouth is home to a large number and range of different bacteria. So it's not surprising that drinking vessels are covered in microbes," said one of the scientists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists stated that to avoid drinking contaminated water, the bottles should be washed at least once a day with soapy water. Moreover, the bottles should be sanitised at least once a week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trekkers often get lost during these solo treks and Nepal has been incurring enormous search and rescue costs due to this. So now the country has decided to ban solo trekking and they will now have to either join a group or hire a government-licensed guide.</p>

<p>Remote mountainous regions of Nepal lack the infrastructure to help a traveller who gets lost. So an emergency response in such a situation is difficult to undertake, Mani R. Lamichhane, Director of the Nepal Tourism Board, told CNN.</p>

<p>Lamicchane added: “When tourists go missing or they are found dead, even the government cannot track them because they have taken remote routes.”</p>

<p>Then there are several unlicensed tour guides and companies who do not pay taxes to the government since they aren't registered and end up snatching jobs from the locals. Lamichhane says the tourism industry had been demanding a stop to these unauthorised trekking operations for a long time.</p>

<p>The decision has invited mixed reactions from those involved in the trekking business. However, most of them feel that a lot of trekkers had been attempting difficult climbs in Nepal, despite not being experienced. A lot of tourists have been taking solo treks and a lot of them end up getting lost. A blanket ban makes more sense since the Nepal government cannot vet every single visa applicant separately, Ian Taylor, owner of a guiding company in Nepal, told CNN.</p>

<p>More than half of all men (55 per cent) and about 41 per cent of all women across 32 countries believe that the women's rights have gone overboard, according to a survey by Ipsos UK and the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London. The survey collated responses from 22,500 people aged 16-74 across 32 countries, including 500 responses each from India, Indonesia, South Africa and South Korea.</p>

<p>Nearly 52 per cent of Gen Z and 53 per cent of millennials say that society has gone "too far" in promoting women's rights that it is discriminating against men.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In contrast, four in 10 baby boomers (40 per cent) and Gen X (46 per cent) said the same.</p>

Women’s rights have gone ‘too far’, now men feeling discriminated, says latest survey

<p>In&nbsp;the Chinese province of Liaoning, worms are falling from the sky.&nbsp;At least, that's what a trending video on the internet suggests. Even if many people are still baffled as to what caused it, they are not falling behind in making&nbsp;irrational assumptions.</p>

<p>Yet, this is not the first time&nbsp;the world has witnessed&nbsp;this peculiar phenomenon.&nbsp;Iguanas, which are big reptiles, were said to be raining last year in Florida.</p>

<p>Coming back to worms purportedly&nbsp;raining in China, reports say the Chinese citizens of Liaoning province are being urged to seek refuge inside their homes in order to protect themselves from these pouring worms.</p>

<p>Social media users are surprised by a video that is trending and receiving a lot of attention. In the video, an area of the province can be allegedly seen to be completely covered in tiny worms. They are dispersed among the vehicles.</p>

<p>He stated that the clouds do not resemble any natural cloud formation he is aware of and also acknowledged that "nature... has a funny way of presenting itself sometimes and it can come up with wonderful and weird things”.</p>

<p>"Not that there's any rocket launch pads in Abingdon, I don't think. It's either a mini-tornado that looks a bit freakish or we've got a... rocket. It's hanging in the air still, quite literally,” he added.</p>

<p>The second man was taken to the Rajpura Health Center for treatment and was declared dead on arrival.</p>

<p>The District Chief Medical Officer confirmed both the deaths.</p>

<p>Out of other injured, four have been moved to the Srinagar state hospital for advanced treatment, one of them is in a critical state.</p>

<p>Rest injured were admitted to Pulwama and Shopian hospitals for treatment.</p>

<p>&quot;The matter is being investigated and the case has been registered against the Army unit,&quot; said DIG, South Kashmir.</p>

<p>According to an army spokesman,&nbsp;&quot;an army administrative convoy was passing through Ganaupura chowk in Shopian when it came under unprovoked and intense stone pelting. Considering the extreme gravity of the situation, the army was constrained to open fire in self-defence. In the process, two civilians succumbed to the bullet injuries.&quot;</p>

<p>Facebook was second, but the numbers were far from 900,000. Similar searches for the app were 385,410. Meanwhile, Snapchat searches were at 217,400 and Twitter at 92,490. Furthermore, TikTok, on the other hand, had just 14,120 searches.</p>

<p>However, the volume is not as harmful as it looks. Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are the apps Americans use the most. A majority of the American population have social media applications on their phone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2022, TikTok was the most downloaded app in the United States and worldwide.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If a person wants to break it off with Instagram, they have two choices. They can take a permanent break (delete your Instagram account forever with no givebacks) or take a temporary one by deactivating their account. The latter gives a user the option of coming back later.</p>

<p>According to the data, searches for 'deactivate Instagram' grew by 2,400 per cent, peaking on February 19, whereas the 'deactivate Facebook' section in the search grew by 1,566 per cent. It doesn't come as a shock as the Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta has suffered after Apple changed its privacy policy recently.</p>

<p>Apps like Instagram survive on mobile ad revenue and heavily depend on this type of tracking. Apple's new update gives users more control. It allows them to stop apps from tracking their moves on the device through the Cupertino-based tech giant's privacy features in Settings.</p>

<p>"Golden jewellery from the High Middle Ages is extremely rare in the Netherlands," the museum also said.</p>
