<p>The artificial intelligence startup of Elon Musk, called xAI, is set to release its first AI model to a few select groups on Saturday (Oct 4), announced the billionaire and Tesla CEO on Friday (Oct 3).<br />

The step has been taken almost a year after OpenAI's ChatGPT was launched which changed the ways in which businesses worked across the world and pushed people toward adopting the generative AI technology.<br />

OpenAI, the company which introduced ChatGPT to the world, was launched by Elon Musk in 2015 but he stepped down from the board of the company in 2018.<br />

"In some important respects, it (xAI's new model) is the best that currently exists," Musk wrote on his X social media platform. "As soon as it’s out of early beta, xAI's Grok system will be available to all X Premium+ subscribers," he added.</p>

The team which has worked on xAI, which was launched in July, consists of those who have worked in Google's DeepMind, and other major AI research firms.<br />

Even though X and xAI are separate, the companies have been working closely together. xAI has also collaborated with Tesla and other companies.<br />

Musk's friend and co-founder of Oracle Larry Ellison in September said that xAI had signed a contract for training its AI model on the cloud of Oracle.</p>

<p>The emails obtained by Forbes were from the current employees of X which noted that the tech giant recently made updates to its @handle guidelines, process and fees.</p>

<p>There had been rumours about Musk planning to usher in such a programme in the ensuing days post his acquisition of Twitter, which he later renamed&nbsp;X, in November last year.</p>

<p>He, on his social media handle, had shared in November 2022 that a “vast number” of handles had been taken by “bots and trolls” which he planned to begin “freeing up next month.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>By January 2023, Musk was reportedly working on plans to free up as many as 1.5 billion usernames.</p>

<p>Michael Kugelman, South Asia Institute Director at The Wilson Center, described the post as "pure, unadulterated hate".</p>

<p>"This comment is pure, unadulterated hate. And it’s still up more than 24 hours after it was posted. It needs to be taken down. And the &nbsp;senator’s party-one of the biggest and most established in Pakistan, and a big part of the previous ruling coalition-should condemn it," Kugelman wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is what (is) emboldening anti-Jewish sentiments gets the world. A Pakistan senator posted this. Words matter. What's seen on the streets in the West has repercussions across the world," wrote another user on X.</p>

<p>"This is coming from a senator from Pakistan’s ruling party. Absolutely vile. He may not face any repercussions for this in Pakistan but X must delete the tweet and suspend his account," wrote a third user.</p>

<p>While Adolf Hitler did not invent the hatred of Jews, he went on to capitalise on antisemitic ideas that had been around for a long time.</p>

<p>Google has agreed to an investment of upto USD 2 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic. The start-up is a rival of OpenAI, the maker of widely popular generative AI tool ChatGPT. The announcement about the latest investment has been made by a spokesperson for Anthropic, Reuters reported. Alphabet's Google is already invested in Anthropic. It has invested USD 500 million and now has agreed to add USD 1.5 billion more over time. The fresh announcement reflects Google's intention to take on Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Google has already released Bard, its own generative AI. However, it has not been able to match the massive popularity of ChatGPT.</p>

<p>Since the launch of ChatGPT, BigTech companies have scrambled to infuse AI into their applications.</p>

<p>Even Amazon declared last month that it would pump-in up to USD 4 billion in Anthropic. In a quarterly report Amazon filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this week, the tech giant said that it had already invested USD 1.25 billion in Anthropic which can be converted to equity. Amazon's Bedrock AI service has drawn thousands of customers.</p>

<p>There was no immediate public statement from either Google or Amazon over the developments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the success of ChatGPT, cloud companies are investing big bucks in order to establish ties with AI start-ups that have potential to reshape the industry.</p>

<p>This included large-scale electronic manufacturing, textiles, manufacturing of medical devices, speciality steel, food products, &nbsp;advanced chemistry cell batteries, white goods, automobiles, high-efficiency solar PV modules, drones and pharmaceuticals. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this year, India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that Apple exported goods - worth $5 billion - from India in 2022, while adding that the company has plans to produce 25 per cent of global units in the next four to five years in the country.</p>

The warnings were published prior to UK's stewardship of a global technology summit focused on regulatory development of AI technologies and UK PM Rishi Sunak's note of caution on the same.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The warnings were put out in a series of papers laid out by the UK government in relation to the risks and opportunities posed by AI.</p>

<h2><strong>What are British intelligence papers about?</strong></h2>

<p>The papers, based on British intelligence assessments&nbsp;of the near-term threats, pointed to "Digital Risks" such as cybercrime and hacking, as an area where generative AI models are likely to have the largest negative impact.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The papers also flagged potential threats to democracy.</p>

<p>"Risks to political systems and societies will increase in likelihood to 2025, becoming as significant as digital risks as generative AI develops and adoption widens," the report warns. "Threats include manipulation and deception of populations."</p>

<p>"Generative AI tools have already been shown capable of persuading humans on political issues and can be used to increase the scale, persuasiveness and frequency of disinformation and misinformation," the paper adds.</p>

<p>Another scenario outlined how automation could lead to increased unemployment and poverty by 2030 as well as "fierce public debate about the future of education and work".</p>

Urgent actions needed to stop spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse images on internet

<p>The US government is expected to pass an executive order on artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming days, reported the Washington Post. This is being called the Biden administration's most prominent step till now to regulate the technology that has taken the world by storm. It has been reported that the order will be released just two days before an international summit in the UK which is focussed on potential risks of AI. Leaders of governments, civil society groups and even top Silicon Valley executives are expected to be present for the summit.</p>

<p>WaPo&nbsp;reported citing three unnamed people who are involved in the discussions that the sweeping order may require&nbsp;advanced AI models to undergo an assessment before their use by federal workers.</p>

<p>The report said that on Tuesday night, the White House sent invitations for the “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence” event that is set to take place next week. The event will reportedly be hosted by the president.</p>

<p>The AI is under scanner in different parts of the world. The European Union and other governments are finding ways to block uses of artificial intelligence that pose the biggest risks. The executive order from the US would be another step in the direction as policymakers ponder how to tackle the risks associated with AI.</p>

<p>It is expected that EU officials will reach a deal by year's end. The widely anticipated EU AI Act would most likely be a wide-ranging package aimed at protecting customers from risks surrounding AI.</p>

<p>Artificial Intelligence captivated popular perception with the launch of ChatGPT last year.&nbsp;The generative AI tool started a new race between the tech giants besides making everyday users awestruck and even apprehensive due to its ability to generate text, poetry, essays, codes and more.</p>

<p>There have been concerns about AI replacing humans in jobs and the need for regulation has taken root in policymaking circles.</p>

<p>The White House spoke about plans for the executive order in July. Biden further gave a hint of it in September.</p>

<p>“This fall, I’m going to take executive action, and my administration is going to continue to work with bipartisan legislation so America leads the way toward responsible AI innovation,” Biden said at a meeting with the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.</p>

<p>The lawsuit comes after a nationwide bipartisan investigation found that Meta has been “harming” children and teens due to the addictive nature of their social media platforms.</p>

<p>The latest lawsuit is among a string of legal actions against social media companies on behalf of children and teens.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the lawsuit</strong></h2>

<p>There are a total of more than 40 US states which are suing Meta but 33 of them have filed their complaint in a federal lawsuit as opposed to others which have sought to fight their case in local courts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its Social Media Platforms,” said the joint lawsuit filed by more than 30 states, including California and Illinois in the city of Oakland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit argues that Meta has exploited young users by creating a business model designed to make them spend as much time as possible on the platform despite harm to their health.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also accused Meta of knowingly inducing addictive and compulsive social media use despite knowing that teenage brains are susceptible to the need for approval in the form of “likes” from other users about their content.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Meta did not disclose that its algorithms were designed to capitalize on young users’ dopamine responses and create an addictive cycle of engagement,” said the complaint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit also alleges Meta has violated a law banning the collection of data about children under the age of 13.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a statement announcing the suit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suit has sought a variety of remedies, including substantial civil penalties. According to James, it also urges the federal court to order Meta to stop manipulative tactics.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Meta is ‘disappointed’</strong></h2>

<p>Meta has since responded to the lawsuit and said that it was “disappointed”&nbsp;that the attorneys general have chosen to single them out instead of seeking industry-wide solutions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instagram’s parent company also said that it has developed more than 30 tools in its apps to support teenage users, and made it easier for parents to “shape” online activity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit is said to have stemmed from a nationwide investigation announced in November of 2021. "Research has shown that young people’s use of Meta's social media platforms is associated with depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with education and daily life, and many other negative outcomes," said the complaint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our bipartisan investigation has arrived at a solemn conclusion: Meta has been harming our children and teens, cultivating addiction to boost corporate profits,” said California attorney general Rob Bonta, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “With today's lawsuit, we are drawing the line.” The investigation came after Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked more than 20,000 pages of internal documents sparking criticism of the social media giant putting profit before the security of its users.</p>

<p>Yoshua Bengio, a co-author of the paper, who is also one of the so-called godfathers of AI, said that recent state-of-the-art AI models are too powerful, and too significant, to let them develop without democratic oversight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It (investments in AI safety) needs to happen fast because AI is progressing much faster than the precautions taken," Bengio added. Other authors of the study include Geoffrey Hinton, Andrew Yao, Daniel Kahneman, Dawn Song and Yuval Noah Harari.</p>

<p>At present, no broad-based regulations are focusing on AI safety. The&nbsp;first set of legislation by the European Union (EU) is yet to become law as lawmakers are yet to agree on several issues.</p>

<p>The paper also urged governments to give independent auditors access to AI laboratories and establish a licensing system for building cutting-edge models. The paper further said that AI companies must adopt specific safety measures if dangerous capabilities are found in their models.</p>
