Japan's competition watchdog said on Monday (Oct 23) that it was investigating Google for a possible breach of antimonopoly laws in web search services. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Japan Fair Trade Commission said it was probing whether Google violated Japan's Antimonopoly Act by returning part of its revenue to Android smartphone makers on the condition that they do not install rival search engines.

A JFTC official told reporters that the commission was also investigating Google's practice of making Android phone makers install its "Google Search" and "Google Chrome" browser applications with the "Google Play" app.

The official said that there was suspicion that with these steps, Google was excluding competitors' business activity and restricting its business partners' activity in the search services market. The issue was not that the American tech giant's service was widely used, it was about fair competition.&nbsp;

Japan has joined European authorities and other major economies in launching an investigation against Google. In January, the United States sued the tech giant for monopolising digital advertising technologies.&nbsp;

"Over the past 15 years, Google has engaged in a course of anticompetitive and exclusionary conduct that consisted of neutralizing or eliminating ad tech competitors through acquisitions; wielding its dominance across digital advertising markets to force more publishers and advertisers to use its products; and thwarting the ability to use competing products," the Justice Department said in a statement.&nbsp;

"In doing so, Google cemented its dominance in tools relied on by website publishers and online advertisers, as well as the digital advertising exchange that runs ad auctions," it added.&nbsp;

Bharadwaj explained that cyber threats are constantly evolving, exposing vulnerabilities in the digital infrastructure and impacting individuals and organisations across diverse sectors and industries.&nbsp;

"With the rise of new technologies like AI, cybercriminals have been able to create more advanced ways to launch attacks," he said.&nbsp;

<h2>India and Cybersecurity &nbsp;</h2>

Recently, a report by Palo Alto Networks revealed that India faces a substantial risk of cyberattacks targeting its critical infrastructure, public sector, and essential services.&nbsp;

As per the report, 67 per cent of Indian government and essential service entities reported encountering a surge of over 50 per cent in disruptive attacks.

Apart from that, S Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), also said that the country's space agency is facing more than 100 cyber-attacks daily.&nbsp;These are a couple of examples which show the gravitas of the situation, and how they may impact India's future.

He said that ransomware attacks, phishing attacks, system intrusion, confirmed data disclosure, mobile threats, and social engineering are some of the common cyber threats in India that have affected individuals and organisations.&nbsp;

According to recent reports, less than 40 per cent of organisations have completely addressed emerging cyber risks. Around 47 per cent rank cloud-related threats as their top threat scenario, and 33 per cent rank cloud security as an investment priority.&nbsp;

<h2>Need for data security</h2>

Bharadwaj said that "considering the increasing amount of personal and sensitive information being stored digitally, it is essential to implement strict cyber-security policies to neutralise attacks and improve resilience".&nbsp;

He said that historically, the number of attackers was directly related to the number of malicious humans involved in the attacks. However, in the present scenario, the number of threat actors is proportional to the amount of virtual AI-enabled armies they can control.&nbsp;

"As a result, the scale of threat actors and their effectiveness has significantly changed. Attackers also use deep fake technology to create convincing fake audio or video content, spread disinformation and manipulate public opinion," he said.&nbsp;

Bharadwaj was asked about the importance of building skills and maintaining staff for research and development.&nbsp;

He said that the expansion of cybersecurity verticals offers ample opportunities for tech professionals to upskill, reskill, and enter this sector.&nbsp;

He asserted that there is a need to address the skill gaps in cybersecurity to "ensure enough skilled professionals meet the growing demand".&nbsp;

"To overcome this challenge, boosting resource availability and fostering cybersecurity talent development through industry-wide initiatives and strategies is crucial," he said.&nbsp;

Consequently, Netflix is on track to gain more than 20 million customers in the current year, a substantial increase from the fewer than 9 million added in 2022, Bloomberg reported further.

Instead of directing users to the intended Telegram channel, the link appeared as https://t.me/securelycont, inadvertently creating an available Telegram username. Seizing this opportunity, cybersecurity researcher Kevin McSheehan&nbsp;registered the username.

McSheehan redirected users clicking on the truncated link to his own Telegram channel, where he issued a warning against sharing confidential or sensitive information.

Researchers at the Technical University of Berlin, as per the Guardian, found that people come to see robots as a part of their team. As per their research, in such cases, when people see that technology is performing particularly well, they tend to feel like their own contributions would not be appreciated and scientists suggest this often leads to them taking a more laid-back approach.

As Dietlind Helene Cymek, the study's lead author, puts it, "Teamwork is a mixed blessing."

"Working together can motivate people to perform well but it can also lead to a loss of motivation because the individual contribution is not as visible. We were interested in whether we could also find such motivational effects when the team partner is a robot," added Cymek.

The study has been published in the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI.

The research team conducted an experiment to test this hypothesis. For this, they asked a group of workers to assess the quality of a series of tasks.&nbsp;

Half of the workers were told that the tasks had already been executed by a robot named Panda. Those workers didn't directly collaborate with the robot, but had heard it performing its operations and or could hear its operating sounds.

The workers were tasked with examining circuit boards for potential errors, and as they performed the task, researchers monitored their actions.&nbsp;

This phenomenon was attributed to a potential "looking but not seeing" effect, suggesting that people tend to be careless when they perceive a colleague or resource as reliable.

Working with robots makes people lazy. Here's what 'social loafing' means

For the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) fully automated the process of discovering a supernova as it searched for, detected, confirmed, classified, and announced the findings without any human intervention. Led by Northwestern University, an international team of scientists has created a cutting-edge AI tool known as the Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot).

<h2>What is the AI tool?</h2>

The university has reported that the new system not only allows automation of the entire search for new supernovae across the night sky but also eliminates human error and dramatically increases speed.&nbsp;

BTSbot is a machine-learning algorithm which has been trained by using over 1.4 million images from nearly 16,000 sources, said the researchers in a statement. Scientists have estimated that in the last six years, humans have spent an estimated 2,200 hours visually inspecting and classifying supernova candidates.&nbsp;

“For the first time ever, a series of robots and AI algorithms has observed, then identified, then communicated with another telescope to finally confirm the discovery of a supernova,” said Northwestern’s Adam Miller, who led the work.

He added, “Ultimately, removing humans from the loop provides more time for the research team to analyze their observations and develop new hypotheses to explain the origin of the cosmic explosions that we observe.”

<h2>How does it work?</h2>

The current process of detecting and analysing supernovae involves humans working hand in hand with robotic systems and though supernovae are bright and energetic events, they are not that common, and certainly not easy to spot.&nbsp;

The traditional method involves relying on robotic telescopes repeatedly taking images of the same sections of the night sky to detect new sources of light after which humans take over. Subsequently, astronomers have to visually inspect large volumes of data.&nbsp;

This time-consuming process is believed to be the reason why astronomers have only discovered a small fraction of all supernovae that occur in the universe.

“Automated software presents a list of candidate explosions to humans, who spend time verifying the candidates and executing spectroscopic observations,” Miller explains.&nbsp;

He added, “We can only definitively know that a candidate is truly a supernova by collecting its spectrum – the source’s dispersed light, which reveals elements present in the explosion.”

BTSbot detected the newly discovered supernova named SN2023tyk in data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), said the researchers, which is a robotic camera in the US state of California which scans the northern sky every two days.&nbsp;

This was also after BTSbot automatically requested the potential supernova’s spectrum from Palomar Observatory – where another robotic telescope, the Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM) performed an in-depth observation to obtain the source’s spectrum.&nbsp;

The spectrum was then sent to SNIascore – developed by Caltech’s Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer – to determine the supernova’s type. “Adding BTSbot to our workflow will eliminate the need for us to spend time inspecting these candidates,” said Fremling.&nbsp;

“This significantly streamlines large studies of supernovae, helping us better understand the life cycles of stars and the origin of elements supernovae create, like carbon, iron and gold,” said Nabeel Rehemtulla, who co-led the development.&nbsp;

Australian regulators have fined Elon Musk’s social media platform X, rebranded from Twitter,&nbsp;$385,000 (A$610,500) as it failed to cooperate with a probe into anti-child abuse practices after not providing information about its efforts to combat child exploitation.&nbsp;

This comes days after the European Union said that it is investigating potential violations of its online content rules after X was accused of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/technology/x-removes-hundreds-of-hamas-affiliated-accounts-rebuffs-disinformation-claims-on-israel-war-645932">failing to combat disinformation</a> related to Hamas’ attack on Israel.&nbsp;

<h2>Australian regulators about X&nbsp;</h2>

Earlier this year, multiple tech giants and social media companies, including X and Google, were sent legal notices by Australian regulators asking them to detail their measures for detecting and removing child sexual abuse material.

According to Australia’s eSafety commissioner, some companies responded to reports of abuse within minutes, while others took&nbsp;hours. “Companies can make empty statements like ‘Child exploitation is our top priority,’ so what we’re saying is show us,” Julie Inman Grant said during an interview.&nbsp;

Inman Grant, who was a public policy director for X until 2016, also said that the “only reason” that she saw for failing to answer important questions about illegal content and conduct happening on platforms would be to not have them.&nbsp;

After taking over the social media platform, Musk said in a post that “removing child exploitation is priority #1”.&nbsp;

However, when asked about how the social media platform prevented child grooming on the platform, X told Australian regulators that it was “not a service used by large numbers of young people.”&nbsp;

Australian regulators were also told by X&nbsp;that the available anti-grooming technology was “not of sufficient capability or accuracy to be deployed on Twitter”.&nbsp;

Speaking about the child sexual abuse materials, X said that its detection of such material on the platform had fallen to 75 per cent from 90 per cent in the three months after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/elon-musk-promotes-unvetted-accounts-amid-spread-of-false-war-information-644316">Tesla CEO took over.</a>&nbsp;

The company also told the Australian regulators, that it did not use tools to detect the material in private messages because “the technology is still in development”.&nbsp;

According to a language analysis by Brookline, Massachusetts-headquartered e-learning platform Preply, billionaire business magnate Elon Musk is not the most intelligent tech executive in the United States.

"The way a person uses language is among the clearest indicators of intelligence. Their command over a vast vocabulary, their adeptness at employing nuanced phrases, and the complexity of their sentence structures all illuminate depth of thought and understanding," the Preply <a href="https://preply.com/en/blog/smartest-ceos-in-america/">report</a> says.

"To shed light on this, we analysed dialogue from 100 American executives, examining common linguistic patterns to determine which CEOs consistently showcase remarkable intelligence through their words."

The platform said that they conducted an in-depth analysis of the transcripts from public appearances by various chief executives, with each transcript scored out of a possible 100 points.

The speeches were analysed for 60 to 180 minutes of dialogue for each executive.&nbsp;

The platform looked at vocabulary breadth, vocabulary sophistication, textual readability, critical thinking and contextual relevance of the speech of the respective tech executives as defining criteria of their analysis.

<h2>So, who is the smartest tech CEO?</h2>

According to the aforementioned analysis by Preply, Demis Hassabis of Artificial Intelligence company DeepMind with a score of 87.33 leads the pack among 100 tech leaders active in the United States.&nbsp;

Stephen Schwarzman of Blackstone (74.33), ace investment strategist Warren Buffet (74.00), David Solomon of Goldman Sachs (71.33) and former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (71.00) were placed right next after DeepMind CEO in the list of most intelligent tech leaders.&nbsp;

Jensen Huang of Nvidia (70.33), Reed Hastings of Netflix (70.00), Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms (69.67) and Bob Iger of Disney (69.33) were placed sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth in the list, respectively.

Elon Musk was ranked 16th in the list of most intelligent tech leaders with an intelligence score of 64.33.

OpenAI's Sam Altman was ranked 34th (59.33) while former Twitter (now X) CEO Jack Dorsey was ranked 81st with an intelligence score of 45.33.

Among Indian-origin tech leaders in the United States, Adobe's Shantanu Narayan was ranked 27th (61.33), followed by Vas Narasimhan of Novartis at 29th place (61.00) and Sandeep Mathrani of WeWork at 30th place (60.77).

Microsoft's Satya Nadella was ranked 36th (59.00) while IBM's Arvind Krishna was ranked at 48th place (55.00).

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts and taken action to label or remove “tens of thousands of pieces of content” in the days after the Hamas attack on Israel, said the firm’s CEO Linda Yaccarino, on Thursday (Oct 12).&nbsp;

This comes after European Union commissioner and self-styled “digital enforcer” Thierry Breton raised alarm about a surge of online disinformation, especially over the Israel-Hamas conflict and demanded to know what Musk was doing to mitigate it.&nbsp;

<h2>X CEO defends social media platform</h2>

Since Hamas launched a surprise weekend attack on Israel, the EU industry chief gave the social media platform’s owner a 24 hour-ultimatum to tackle the disinformation to comply with new EU online content rules, which require the removal of illegal content and to take measures to tackle the risks to public security and civic discourse.

“So far since the start of the conflict X has identified and removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts from the platform,” said the X CEO on the social media platform.&nbsp;

The X CEO also said that the microblogging platform had redistributed resources and refocused internal teams to address the rapidly evolving situation but did not mention any specific changes.&nbsp;

In a letter dated Wednesday, Yaccarino wrote that it had also taken down posts that involved “violent speech, manipulated media and graphic media”.

She added that the Musk-owned social media platform assembled a leadership group to assess the situation shortly after the attack.

<h2>What was the EU’s warning?</h2>

The X CEO’s response came days after Breton sent a letter to its owner Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, demanding that each of them provide details within 24 hours on how “illegal content and disinformation” is being removed from their platforms in line with the EU’s recently-implemented Digital Services Act (DSA).&nbsp;

According to the X CEO, the microblogging platform has responded to more than 80 take-down requests received in the EU within required timelines, but has not received any notices from Europol regarding illegal content on the platform.&nbsp;

The Redmond, Washington-based company said it has since changed its practices so that "issues raised by the IRS are relevant to the past but not to our current practices," according to a Microsoft blog.

Microsoft said it believes that any taxes owed after the audit would be reduced by up to $10 billion based on tax laws passed by former President Donald Trump.

The company said it disagrees with the IRS's findings and plans to dispute them, first in an internal IRS proceeding and then later, if necessary, in courts.

The IRS told Reuters it is prevented by U.S. law from confirming or denying whether it is auditing any taxpayer.

Two senior Republican lawmakers in the US&nbsp;House of Representatives on Friday pressed the Biden administration for tougher enforcement of export controls on sending advanced computing chips and the tools to make them to China.

In a letter to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Representatives Michael McCaul and Mike Gallagher, respectively chairmen of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a select committee on China, said that new advances by China's top chipmaker show that the sweeping set of rules rolled out a year ago this month need updating to close what the lawmakers called loopholes.

The letter comes after Huawei Technologies unveiled a new Mate 60 Pro smartphone that contained advanced chips made by China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) despite US&nbsp;sanctions.

"The October 7 rules and SMIC’s growing capabilities reveal a stagnant, obscured bureaucracy that does not understand China’s industrial policy, does not understand China’s military goals, and does not understand technology at all - and does not have the will to act," McCaul and Gallagher said in the letter.

The lawmakers urged the Biden administration to update the rules and take immediate action against Huawei and SMIC. They also urged the administration cut off Chinese companies' access to powerful artificial-intelligence chips accessed through cloud computing services and to start enforcing the administration's own rules around placing restrictions on Chinese companies that do not allow US&nbsp;officials to verify whether Chinese companies are complying with US&nbsp;export rules.

Reuters reported this week that the Biden administration has warned China it plans to update the rules. Spokespeople for the National Security Council and the Bureau of Industry and Security, the arm of the Commerce Department that oversees export controls, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a move which might further worsen the already souring relations between the social media platform’s relations with media groups.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the change?</h2>

According to reports the change was first made on Wednesday (Oct 4) for iOS and desktop users. In line with this, links posted on the microblogging platform now appear as the image posted in the article while the text on the bottom left side of the image shows the domain of the link.

Therefore, to access the link the users will now have to click on the image while there is only a slight change to how the images uploaded to the site appear.&nbsp;

Notably, while Musk has long targeted “legacy media” and has previously claimed that X is a better source of information, he said that the latest change will “greatly improve the esthetics.”

Media reports about the news and other links appearing only as images with no text first emerged in August. It was after a report by Forbes that the Tesla CEO said that the change is in the works. “This is coming from me directly. Will greatly improve the esthetics,” said Musk.&nbsp;

A report by the news agency AFP has noted how the change has been introduced gradually this week where users, instead of seeing a headline along with a picture, now see only an image with a small watermark.

Earlier this week, Musk posted, “I almost never read legacy news anymore.” He added, “What’s the point of reading 1,000 words about something that was already posted on X several days ago?”

Tech giant Apple has released a software update, iOS 17.0.3, for iPhone 15 and iPad iOS 17.0.3 amid customer&nbsp;complaints about overheating. Some buyers said their ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and Pro Max were getting too warm and even shutting down due to heat problems.

Over the weekend, the tech company confirmed reports on social media that its new iPhones had a tendency to get warm.

It said the problem was a combination of some apps that weren’t properly configured, Instagram, Uber, and more.

It added that it had also been working with app developers to optimise apps causing problems.

The company rolled out the new iOS with patch notes. It found two vulnerabilities: the first was a kernel exploit that could have been exploited by an attacker with local access to the device, and added that it "may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS prior to iOS 16.6."&nbsp;

People looking for adult content on YouTube have discovered that they were able to view and host porn videos on the platform, which is scrambling to delete them.

This is happening thanks to a bug that the Alphabet-owned platform is unable to resolve despite taking action.

404Media news outlet uncovered that a group of self-proclaimed "YouTube hackers" were able to get around the platform’s content moderation rules to upload explicit videos.

These porn videos encompassed hentai and videos featuring well-known adult actress "Sweetie Fox."

In some cases, they were able to lift videos straight out of pornographic websites like Pornhub and transfer them to YouTube.

<h2>Bypassing algorithms</h2>

A reporter from 404Media, Emanuel Maiberg, was the first one to discover such an anomaly.

To understand how the hackers were able to bypass the algorithms, he joined a Discord group called "YouTube porn hunters”—a group that shares pornographic content.

One of the users told 404Media that they could bypass YouTube’s algorithm by exploiting the video tagging system—the field where users can add tags to the video when uploading.

They use something called a “newline” character, which YouTube rarely counts as an actual character. It is essentially what is written when you press the enter key on your keyboard. Users spammed millions of these characters in the video tags. This prevented the visibility of these videos.

Another user shared a text (.txt) file that contains 4 million of these newline characters, claiming that it can be used to upload “undeletable” videos to YouTube.

<h2>YouTube cracks&nbsp;down&nbsp;</h2>

Though YouTube has since cracked down on such videos, the platform is struggling to find all of the videos that were uploaded using this technique.

A YouTube spokesperson told 404Media that they are aware the situation, and trying to remove all the explicit videos that have been uploaded.

When the videos of long queues outside Apple stores surface, we often attribute it to brand loyalty.

And then came the iPhone 15 Pro.&nbsp;

ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL: HELLO USB-C

When you hold the new iPhone 15 Pro in your hand, you would say it looks exactly like its former iteration. Look at the bottom and you can gasp in pleasure because lo-and-behold, a USB-C port.

Yes, you can now charge your iPhone with a Type-C charger. With this Apple may be trying to lure in Android loyalists but what it may have achieved is what its critics have been asking for — ease of use.

Apple has shed its exclusive hardware tag to a certain extent. You can now charge your iPhone with just about any charger lying around the house as long as it supports Type-C. You get a cable in the box sans adapter which will continue to annoy first-time Apple buyers.

Here’s the flip side for Apple loyalists. I have a spaghetti of cables lying in my house. What happens to them? I won’t lie, I miss my Lightning port as will many Apple users. Here’s hoping your other Apple gadgets find use for them before the tech giant quietly transitions towards USB-C.&nbsp;

If you have other gadgets -- yes, your wish has been granted. You can now connect your iPhone to a keyboard, try out reverse charging with other gadgets or shoot video directly onto an external drive, a big incentive for content creators.

TITANIUM BODY: IS THE NEW iPHONE DURABLE?

Once you’re done appreciating/cursing the USB-C, you’ll notice the titanium frame.

The new iPhone 15 Pro comes with a magnificent titanium body with slightly rounded edges. It’s not bulky or heavy and carries the familiarity of an Apple product.&nbsp;

This is the first iPhone to feature an aerospace‑grade titanium design, using the same alloy that spacecraft use for missions to Mars, says Apple. This means your new iPhone is lighter. But does it mean your kids can throw it around without giving you a heart attack?

I wouldn’t recommend dropping this from a height but if you do have butter fingers, this iPhone is slightly more durable. But do not, I repeat, do not perform any drop tests.

Titanium is a super metal, is bio-compatible, and can make robots but it won’t make the iPhone invincible.

Titanium also means the new iPhone is lighter so the new phone may feel cheaper but it's not. The natural Titanium colour is your best bet if you hate fingerprints.

ALL ABOUT THE CHIPSET

The new lineup comes with the A17 Pro chipset. Apple calls this its best graphics performance chipset so far.&nbsp;

A chipset like this one makes your smartphone a workhorse but only in very specific tasks. So this is a gamer's iPhone and that's where the chipset shows its might. If you're not an avid phone gamer, you probably won't notice the upgrade.&nbsp;

WHY IS THE iPHONE 15 PRO HEATING UP?

Right after the iPhones hit the shelves, news of new models overheating made headlines. Now the company has said that these overheating issues are not a safety risk and will not impact the iPhone's performance. Reportedly, some new apps and a "bug" are causing the overheating.

In my one week with the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone got hot a few times when I least expected it. My guess is the powerful chipset or the new iOS update could be the reasons behind this. The issue will get resolved as newer software updates roll out.

HOW IS THE BATTERY?

Well as always, battery life gets a marginal upgrade and once again, depends on your use.&nbsp; 
If you are watching content, scrolling through social media, messaging rapidly, using your phone as your best mate then you will have to charge your iPhone at the end of the day.

CAMERA GETS A MAJOR UPGRADE

The photos get better because the camera is better.

The 48MP main camera captures all the details and you will only notice the difference if your current iPhone is a few iterations older. The more expensive sibling, the Pro Max, gets a better Zoom camera so that may be something to keep in mind if you're planning to upgrade to the new line-up.

But before going crazy after the specs, ask yourself the following:

Do I need ProRes?

Do I need to shoot HDR at 4K 60FPS?&nbsp;

Do I really need high-quality images captured through a 48MP camera?

If the answer is no, move on.

But if you're a content creator, a filmmaker or someone who finds professional cameras daunting for creating content, the camera system on the new line-up is spectacular.

Content creators will have a field day with this one. You can now shoot video in "log" format which is a curious way of recording footage making it look almost flat.

This is a script which has been perfected by bloggers and journalists over the last decade. When the videos of long queues outside Apple stores surface, we often attribute it to brand loyalty. And then came the iPhone 15 Pro. The phone made headlines for overheating. In this review, we tell you why the new iPhone 15 Pro -- starting at Rs 1,34,900 -- is heating up. ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL: HELLO USB-C When you hold the new iPhone 15 Pro in your hand, you would say it looks exactly like its former iteration. Look at the bottom and you can gasp in pleasure because lo-and-behold, a USB-C port. Yes, you can now charge your iPhone with a Type-C charger. With this Apple may be trying to lure in Android loyalists but what it may have achieved is what its critics have been asking for — ease of use. What happens to them? I won’t lie, I miss my Lightning port as will many Apple users. Here’s hoping your other Apple gadgets find use for them before the tech giant quietly transitions towards USB-C. If you have other gadgets -- yes, your wish has been granted. You can now connect your iPhone to a keyboard, try out reverse charging with other gadgets or shoot video directly onto an external drive, a big incentive for content creators. (Image credit: Apple.com) TITANIUM BODY: IS THE NEW iPHONE DURABLE? Once you’re done appreciating/cursing the USB-C, you’ll notice the titanium frame. The new iPhone 15 Pro comes with a magnificent titanium body with slightly rounded edges. It’s not bulky or heavy and carries the familiarity of an Apple product. This is the first iPhone to feature an aerospace‑grade titanium design, using the same alloy that spacecraft use for missions to Mars, says Apple. This means your new iPhone is lighter. But does it mean your kids can throw it around without giving you a heart attack? I wouldn’t recommend dropping this from a height but if you do have butter fingers, this iPhone is slightly more durable. But do not, I repeat, do not perform any drop tests. Titanium is a super metal, is bio-compatible, and can make robots but it won’t make the iPhone invincible. Titanium also means the new iPhone is lighter so the new phone may feel cheaper but it's not. The natural Titanium colour is your best bet if you hate fingerprints. ALL ABOUT THE CHIPSET The new lineup comes with the A17 Pro chipset. Apple calls this its best graphics performance chipset so far. A chipset like this one makes your smartphone a workhorse but only in very specific tasks. So this is a gamer's iPhone and that's where the chipset shows its might. If you're not an avid phone gamer, you probably won't notice the upgrade. (Image credit: Apple.com) WHY IS THE iPHONE 15 PRO HEATING UP? Right after the iPhones hit the shelves, news of new models overheating made headlines. Now the company has said that these overheating issues are not a safety risk and will not impact the iPhone's performance. Reportedly, some new apps and a "bug" are causing the overheating. In my one week with the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone got hot a few times when I least expected it. My guess is the powerful chipset or the new iOS update could be the reasons behind this. The issue will get resolved as newer software updates roll out. HOW IS THE BATTERY? Well as always, battery life gets a marginal upgrade and once again, depends on your use. If you are watching content, scrolling through social media, messaging rapidly, using your phone as your best mate then you will have to charge your iPhone at the end of the day. CAMERA GETS A MAJOR UPGRADE The photos get better because the camera is better. The 48MP main camera captures all the details and you will only notice the difference if your current iPhone is a few iterations older. The more expensive sibling, the Pro Max, gets a better Zoom camera so that may be something to keep in mind if you're planning to upgrade to the new line-up. But before going crazy after the specs, ask yourself the following: Do I need ProRes? Do I need to shoot HDR at 4K 60FPS? Do I really need high-quality images captured through a 48MP camera? If the answer is no, move on. But if you're a content creator, a filmmaker or someone who finds professional cameras daunting for creating content, the camera system on the new line-up is spectacular. Content creators will have a field day with this one. You can now shoot video in "log" format which is a curious way of recording footage making it look almost flat. If you love clicking photos, use it to launch your camera It has replaced the rather useless Ring/Silent switch. This is something which you will forget about and could just be a gimmick. SHOULD YOU UPGRADE TO THE NEW iPhone? Ask yourself the following before spending nearly 1.4 lakh rupees on a phone: Do you need USB-C? Do you need a better camera? A gaming iPhone? And you will have your answer. You do not need to upgrade to a new iPhone every year. Apple refines its features, makes its camera better, its design sleeker. Should you buy the new iPhone 15?

The heads of European Union telecom giants including Orange and Vodafone on Monday (Oct 2) urged the EU to make tech and streaming giants pay for the huge amounts of bandwidth they use. Such a demand is not new but it has reignited the debate.

The telecom companies have said that they needed more funds to maintain and update the infrastructure for Europe's high data needs. The firms say that it would be fairer if tech and streaming giants like Netflix made contributions towards the cost.

But tech giants maintain that telecom companies already get money from customers.

"Big tech companies pay today almost nothing for data transport in our networks, far from covering the costs needed to expand networks," a letter published by the European telecoms lobby group ETNO and signed by 20 CEOs said.

"A fair and proportionate contribution from the largest traffic generators towards the costs of network infrastructure should form the basis of a new approach," they said.

ETNO has previously named tech and streaming giants like Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Google as being major culprits.

The telecom CEOs mentioned the EU estimate that at least 174 billion euros ($183 billion) of fresh investment would be needed by 2030 in order to meet connectivity targets.

"The telecoms sector is currently not strong enough to meet that demand," said the CEOs, including Orange's Christel Heydemann and Telefonica's Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete.

A public consultation was launched by the European Commission in February. It invited citizens, NGOs and companies to submit what they had to say by May.

It is expected that the EU's executive arm would make the results public in 2023.

The idea of "fair contribution to telecommunication networks" is also divisive within the EU.

While earlier this year the European Parliament voiced support for the measure, not all of the EU's 27 member states are on board.

Many countries reportedly opposed such a levy on tech firms in June.

The Computer &amp; Communications Industry Association (CCIA), one of the main tech lobbying groups, has repeatedly argued against the measure. It has warned that fees would have disastrous consequences for European consumers.

One of their main arguments is that customers would be forced to pay twice, first for the internet access, and second through higher costs for streaming and cloud services.

The United States Supreme Court on Friday (Sep 29) agreed to decide whether state laws that seek to regulate Facebook, TikTok, X, and other social media networks violate the Constitution. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the justices would review laws enacted by Republican-dominated legislatures and signed by Republican governors in Florida and Texas.

Both laws aim to prevent social media companies from censoring users based on their viewpoints. The justices already agreed to decide whether public officials can block critics from commenting on their social media accounts, an issue that previously came up in a case involving then-US president Donald Trump.

The Supreme Court's announcement comes as justices continue to grapple with how laws written at the dawn of the digital age, or earlier, apply to the online world.&nbsp;

The report said that separately, the high court could consider a lower-court order limiting executive branch officials’ communications with social media companies about controversial online posts.

The new case follows conflicting rulings by two appeals courts, one of which upheld the Texas law, while the other struck down Florida’s statute. By a 5-4 vote, the justices kept the Texas law on hold while litigation over it continues, the report added.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett voted to grant the emergency request from two technology industry groups that challenged the law in federal court.

On the other hand, Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Elena Kagan, and Neil Gorsuch would have allowed the law to remain in effect.&nbsp;

Proponents of the laws sought to portray social media companies as generally liberal in outlook and hostile to ideas outside of that viewpoint. The tech sector warned that the laws would prevent platforms from removing extremism and hate speech.

US Supreme Court to decide if state laws regulating social media networks violate Constitution

Meta executives have revealed that their AI virtual assistant, dubbed Meta AI, was trained on public posts made by its users on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, however, clarified that they didn’t scrape through the private Facebook messenger and Instagram chats that are shared only with family and friends so as to respect consumers’ privacy.

"We've tried to exclude datasets that have a heavy preponderance of personal information," Clegg told Reuters news agency on Thursday (Sept 28), adding that the "vast majority" of the data used by Meta for training was publicly available.

The clarification seeks to assuage the privacy concerns over tech companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, using information scraped from the internet without permission to train their AI models.

<h2>Built on powerful Lama2 language model</h2>

Meta AI, which was unveiled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday at Meta's annual products conference, Connect, is built on a custom model based on the powerful Llama 2 large language model, and a new model called Emu that generates images in response to text prompts.

The product will be able to generate text, audio and imagery and will have access to real-time information via a partnership with Microsoft's Bing search engine, Clegg said.

“The public Facebook and Instagram posts that were used to train Meta AI included both text and photos,” he added.

Clegg assured that Meta imposed safety restrictions on what content its virtual assistant AI tool could generate, like a ban on the creation of photo-realistic images of public figures.

Speaking on copyrighted materials, Clegg said he was expecting a "fair amount of litigation" over the matter of "whether creative content is covered or not by existing fair use doctrine," which permits the limited use of protected works for purposes such as commentary, research and parody.

"We think it is, but I strongly suspect that's going to play out in litigation," Clegg said.

<h2>AI still in beta version</h2>

Meta, which is currently in beta version, is an “advanced conversational assistant” that can generate text, audio, and imagery, and have real-time access to information through a partnership with Microsoft's Bing search engine.

The company states that the AI chatbot will be limited to information that largely existed prior to 2023,

Meta will eventually launch an AI creator studio for businesses and developers to build their own personalized AI chatbot.

Currently, Meta’s new AI tool is only available in the US.

Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said on Thursday the agency's proposal to reinstate net neutrality rules could give it new authority to force the removal of equipment from China-based Huawei and ZTE from US&nbsp;networks, including data centers.

The 129-page proposal asks for public input if new rules designed to bar internet service providers from blocking or throttling traffic or offering paid fast lanes would give the FCC "more robust authority to require more entities to remove and replace covered Huawei and ZTE communications equipment and services."

It also asks if the authority would allow it to prohibit Chinese equipment in any network infrastructure used to route or transmit communications, including data centers and internet exchange facilities.

Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The FCC in November banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE, saying they posed "an unacceptable risk" to U.S. national security.

In September 2022, the FCC named Chinese telecom companies Pacific Networks and China Unicom (Americas) as threats to US&nbsp;national security under a 2019 law aimed at protecting communications networks.

It previously revoked or denied authority to Chinese telecom companies to provide to operate telecommunications in the United States.

The FCC said the net neutrality rules would enhance the agency's "ability to protect the nation’s communications networks from entities that pose threats to national security."

Rosenworcel said existing "authority does not cover broadband. This is a national security loophole that needs to be addressed."

The proposal faces an initial Oct. 19 vote and also asks if the FCC could prohibit internet service providers from entering into traffic exchange arrangements with some companies on national security grounds.

The Chinese embassy in Washington said previously the FCC "abused state power and maliciously attacked Chinese telecom operators again without factual basis." Huawei has repeatedly denied allegations of wrongdoing and said the US&nbsp;government has "unlawfully and irrationally" targeted the company.

Washington's efforts to counter the Chinese tech giants come amid US&nbsp;fears that Beijing could use them to spy on Americans. Washington has for years pressured US&nbsp;allies not to use Huawei or ZTE equipment from 5G networks or remove gear from existing networks.

The FCC designated Huawei and ZTE as threats, requiring US&nbsp;carriers to remove their gear or be frozen out of an $8.3 billion government fund to purchase new equipment. However, to fund the so-called "rip and replace" effort, Congress only appropriated $1.9 billion.

US telecom agency says it could boost authority over Huawei, ZTE equipment

Elon Musk to transform X with features of download, live video

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said at an event on Wednesday (September 27) that the company will start shipping its newest Quest mixed-reality headset on October 10. The announcement was made at a Meta Connect Conference, the biggest event of the year for the social media company. It is expected that more announcements will be made on plans to build metaverse, which Zuckerberg says is the future of computing.

Meta announced Quest 3 over the summer just when Apple launched its Vision Pro headset. Apple's high-end product has a price-tag of USD &nbsp;3500.

The Quest 3 headset starts at USD 500. It has the same mixed-reality tech that the more expensive headset Quest Pro has.

Quest Pro was launched last year. It shows wearers a video feed of the world around them.

Meta Connect Conference this year is the first in-person conference since the start of the pandemic.

The day's announcements are expected to indicate how Zuckerberg plans to navigate the shift this year of investor fervor to artificial intelligence from augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Stakes are high this year especially after lashing Meta got from investors last year. Meta received criticism for spending extensively on metaverse. As Meta continued funding Zuckerberg's vision, the company was forced to sack tens of thousands of staff.
