The UN education body's Director General Audrey Azoulay said that GenAI could be a tremendous opportunity for human development, but it could also cause harm and prejudice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It cannot be integrated into education without public engagement, and the necessary safeguards and regulations from governments," Azoulay added.</p>

<p>X, previously known as Twitter, has updated its privacy policy which entitles it to collect users’ biometric data. The updated policy, which went into effect on September 29, also allows the social media platform to access users’ educational backgrounds and job histories.</p>

<p>The privacy policy changes are introduced ahead of X’s plans to add video and audio call features to the app.</p>

<p>“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security and identification purposes,” X said in its new policy.</p>

<h2><strong>Special changes&nbsp;for premium users</strong></h2>

<p>According to Bloomberg, the platform will collect biometrics data only from premium users. It will also give them the option to add another verification layer on their platform if details like a government ID and an image are also furnished.</p>

<p>“This will additionally help us tie, for those that choose, an account to a real person by processing their government-issued ID … this will also help X fight impersonation attempts and make the platform more secure,” Bloomberg reported citing a statement by X.</p>

<p>Making X safe and free from bots and fake accounts has been the ‘topmost priority’ of US Billionaire Elon Musk since the takeover.</p>

<p>Beijing issued new regulations this month for China's AI developers that maintain the government's tight control on information while allowing them to stay in the race with the likes of Microsoft and ChatGPT maker OpenAI.</p>

<p>Baidu led several companies in rolling out AI chatbots on Thursday: SenseTime opened its service for registration, and two other firms -- Baichuan Intelligent Technology and Zhipu AI -- said their bots were online and open to the public.</p>

<p>"We are thrilled to share that ERNIE Bot is now fully open to the general public starting August 31," Baidu said in a statement on Thursday.</p>

<p>"In addition to ERNIE Bot, Baidu is set to launch a suite of new AI-native apps that allow users to fully experience the four core abilities of generative AI: understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory."</p>

<p>But on sensitive topics such as China's bloody clampdown on pro-democracy protesters at Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989, it said: "Let's change the topic and start again."</p>

<p>Tiananmen is a particularly sensitive subject in China and online information and discussion about it is strictly censored.</p>

<p>When asked about Taiwan, a self-ruling island that China claims as its territory, ERNIE Bot offered a longer answer.</p>

<p>"Taiwan is part of the sacred territory of the People's Republic of China," it responded. "China's sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be violated or divided."</p>

<p>Then, it said: "Let's talk about something else."</p>

<p>The search feature is meant to be used for searching information, like locating something to purchase. It is different from Bard, Google's chatbot, which can hold human-like conversations and can provide answers to prompts.</p>

Google launches generative-AI search function in India and Japan

<p>"We have more reasons than ever to recommit ourselves to organizing to ensure that tech companies like Google, based right here in the Bay and in the United States, cannot continue profiting off of and powering Israeli apartheid," Dani Noble, an organiser with Jewish Voice for Peace, said on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These workers have been organizing for two years because they don't want their labour to be used to power Israeli apartheid and violations of Palestinian human rights," Noble added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is Project Nimbus?</strong></h2>

<p>Signed in May 2021, Project Nimbus is a multi-year project intended to provide a comprehensive solution for the provision of cloud services to the government, the defence system and other groups in the economy, as per the Israeli finance ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The four phases of the project include the acquisition and construction of cloud infrastructure, formulating government policy for migrating to the cloud, integration and migration, and control and optimisation of cloud activity.</p>

<p>Amazon Web Services is also a part of the project.</p>

<p>Protesters have said the cloud technology was being used against Palestinians, including for surveillance, and racial segregation.</p>

<p>"As long as people are aware of this contract, there is nothing more powerful than people power. So what I would urge to people who aren't the decision makers in Google and people who don't make those top line decisions of keeping or dropping project numbers is that they should talk to their colleagues about it," Rami Abdelkarim, a Bay Area organiser, said during Tuesday's protest.</p>

<p>According to Originality.ai, a company that determines if content is AI-generated or plagiarised revealed that more than 15 per cent of the top 100 websites had chosen to restrict GPTBot in the last two weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted on it original site, the analysis said: "GPTBot launched 14 days ago and the percentage of Top 1,000 sites blocking it has been steadily increasing."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"During the weekend, we encountered a glitch that prevented the display of images dated before 2014. It's important to note that no images or data were lost during this incident. We have addressed the glitch, and it will be fully resolved in the coming days," the post said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;announcement lacked specific information regarding the nature of the bug, its initiation date, or the reasons for the unspecified timeline for resolution.</p>

<p>The Verge website had discovered that alterations made by Twitter in 2016 employed metadata from tweets posted starting in December 2014 onward to augment additional data from linked webpages and facilitate attachments without affecting a tweet's character count.</p>

<p>Consequently, it was exclusively earlier posts that were affected by this bug.</p>

<p>Over the months, he often boasted about how the number of users coming to X and consuming content increased.</p>

<p>However, recent data collected by third-party researcher Travis Brown has given some reality check,&nbsp;suggesting that the picture isn’t as rosy as depicted by Musk.</p>

<p>The data, which was reviewed by Mashable, shows that around 42 per cent of Musk’s own followers, or 65.3 million accounts, have zero followers on their account, indicating that they may be inactive.</p>

<p>Further, more than 72 per cent, or nearly 112 million, of these users following Musk have less than 10 followers on their account.</p>

<p>And as far as consuming content on the platform is concerned, over 62.5 million of Musk followers have zero tweets.</p>

<p>This includes users who have deleted all of their tweets by the time this data was collected over the past few weeks as well as accounts that have never before tweeted.</p>

<p>More than 100 million Musk followers have less than 10 tweets posted to their accounts.</p>

<p>Recently, the Tesla CEO claimed that X now has more than 540 million "monthly users".</p>

<p>Another interesting detail that has emerged from the data is exactly when his followers created their accounts.</p>

<p>Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022. Out of all of Musk's current followers, more than 25 per cent, or 38.9 million, were created on or after that date.</p>

<p>The average number of followers for all 153 million accounts following Musk is just around 187. However, Brown tells Mashable that the follower "distributions are so skewed" that the averages aren't "very meaningful" here.</p>

<p>The data has further shown how many of Musk’s followers subscribe to X Premium, previously known as Twitter Blue that was re-launched with a price tag of $8 a month.</p>

<p>Only around 453,000 Musk followers or 0.3 percent subscribe to X Premium, the data shows.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Mashable reported earlier that there were around 830,000 X Premium subscribers in total based on another data set compiled by Brown.</p>

<p>Last month, Zuckerberg told employees during an internal company town hall that retention of users was better than what executives expected but it was "not perfect".</p>

<p>"Obviously, if you have more than 100 million people sign up, ideally it would be awesome if all of them or even half of them stuck around. We're not there yet," he said as quoted by Reuters.</p>

<p>Zuckerberg said that the drop in the&nbsp;number of users was "normal" and expected retention to grow as more features get added, including the desktop version.</p>

<p>Chief Product Officer Chis Cox has said that Meta is looking at the addition of more "retention driving hooks".</p>

<p>Reuters said that a company spokesperson declined to comment on the town hall meeting.</p>

<p>The executives' comments came a day after Meta wowed investors with a rosy revenue growth forecast, a sign of a comeback for a company that faced deep scepticism over its hefty spending on the metaverse last year as ad sales plummeted.</p>

Threads plans launch of web version of app next week: Report

<p>Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), a Chinese company which is the world's largest battery maker, is saying that it has launched first-ever "superfast charging" battery. This battery is reportedly capable of delivering a range of 400 kilometres (249 miles) when charged for just 10 minutes.</p>

<p>The company is saying that its lithium-ion battery will open a new era for electric cars. This, said the company, would eliminate range anxiety for electric car owners.</p>

<p>The company said that when the battery is charged fully, it can offer a range of over 700 km till the next recharge. This is roughly 60 per cent more than the mileage of average electric vehicle.</p>

<p>The company has said that the increase in battery capacity and reduction in charge time was due to a “brand-new superconducting electrolyte formula”. This, the company said, has resulted in better conductivity.</p>

<p>“The future of the EV battery technology must remain steadfastly anchored at the global technology frontier, as well as the economic benefits,” said Dr Wu Kai, chief scientist at CATL, as quoted by The Independent.</p>

<p>“As EV consumers shift from pioneering users to ordinary users, we should make advanced technology accessible for all and enable everyone to savour the fruits of innovation.”</p>

<p>CATL manufactured more lithium-ion batteries than any of its competitors last year. It reportedly plans to begin mass manufacturing of next generation battery later this year.</p>

<p>It hasn't been revealed which carmaker would receive the new batteries first. CATL's customers include BMW, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, Honda and more.</p>

<p>Though sales of electric cars still amount to less than fifth of all car sales, there has been a record-breaking increase in the purchase of electric cars in recent years.</p>

<p>Range anxiety is said to be one of the main barriers for customers when they consider purchasing an electric vehicle. There are other challenged like battery degradation and access to battery materials. CATL claims the second point is not a problem with its latest battery.</p>

<p>Majority of the major carmakers has aimed to phase out cars with internal combustion engines fully by 2040. International Energy Agency says sale of electric cars will overtake that of fossil fuel-powered car within next 15 years. Breakthrough in battery technology is likely to reduce this time scale even more.</p>

<p>The AI model's capabilities were further honed as it delved into the relationship between AI-estimated age and various diseases.</p>

<p>An additional dataset comprising 34,197 chest radiographs from patients with known diseases was employed for this purpose. In total, the model was fine-tuned using a vast pool of around 101,300 chest X-rays, sourced from 70,248 participants across five different institutions in Japan.</p>

The researchers uncovered a robust correlation between the age estimated by the AI model and the chronological age of the individuals. The AI model's capabilities were further honed as it delved into the relationship between AI-estimated age and various diseases. An additional dataset comprising 34,197 chest radiographs from patients with known diseases was employed for this purpose. In total, the model was fine-tuned using a vast pool of around 101,300 chest X-rays, sourced from 70,248 participants across five different institutions in Japan. <p>In the month of July, X announced that TweetDeck, which is a popular application that allows users to access and monitor multiple accounts at a single time, would be available to only "verified" account holders from the month of August.</p>

<p>The popular social media firm, which was taken over by billionaire Elon Musk in the year 2022, has been announcing new ways to make profits. After he bought Twitter, now known as X, Musk went on a massive layoff spree to cut down expenses and also increased its paid subscription fee.</p>

<p>Last week, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Linda Yaccarino said that the organisation was "close" to breaking even and would strengthen staffing that had been slashed by Musk.</p>

<p>The verified users of platform X are mostly the ones that have paid to receive the blue checkmark, though Musk has gifted the verification symbol to some.</p>

<p>TweetDeck, which was launched over a decade ago, shows messages in columns and its search and posting functions operate differently from the website or the application.</p>
