<p>Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s effectiveness and accuracy have attracted millions of commoners and researchers alike. One such AI tool, ChatGPT, has recently spearheaded a new trend worldwide, where everyone seems to experiment with the app to generate impressive results by giving simple commands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In one such curious experiment, Johann Rehberger, a security researcher gave yet another command to ChatGPT in plain English. He coaxed OpenAI’s chatbot to do something sinister: Read his email, summarise it and post that information to the internet.</p>

<p>Rehberger, of course, had no intention to read another person’s email but was using its response as research.</p>

<p>But in the hands of a criminal, this technique could have been used to steal sensitive data from someone’s email inbox, Rehberger said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The attack wouldn’t have affected most ChatGPT accounts. It worked because Rehberger was using a beta-test feature of ChatGPT that gave it access to apps such as Slack, Gmail and others.</p>

<p>The Indian government is exploring the potential of a new technology called, direct-to-mobile (D2M), which would enable mobile users to watch live TV channels on their smartphones without an internet connection. <p>D2M technology could significantly benefit consumers by allowing them to access live TV on their mobile phones without using data and on the lines of direct-to-home (DTH). This would also help content providers reach a broader audience.</p>

<p>Despite these advantages, telecom operators are concerned about losing revenue from video consumption. Besides that, they also fear the potential harm to their 5G strategies.</p>

<p>Popular video conferencing platform <strong>Zoom </strong>is back in the news for privacy concerns. Zoom updated its terms of service in March this year, which has now triggered concerns that the company might use user-generated content on the platform, such as conversations and chats, to train its Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, that too without the users’ consent.</p>

<p>However, the company has tried to put the rumours to rest by releasing a statement on Monday (August 7). In a statement, it said the company “will not use audio, video, or chat customer content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent.”</p>

<h2><strong>Will Zoom tap your devices now?</strong></h2>

<p>According to Zoom’s latest promises, it would be incorrect to say it will eavesdrop on your video calls and virtual meetings. The current terms don’t allow user-generated content to be accessed by the company.</p>

<p>If the company is ever found to be collecting user-generated content, irrespective of consent, it would be violating its own terms, thus paving the way for litigation.</p>

<h2><strong>Are privacy concerns raised by experts illegitimate?</strong></h2>

<p>Not exactly. The company can still access “service-generated data” for machine learning purposes, provided the required consent is given. Service-generated data refers to data regarding customer behaviour such as what features do customers use more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, to allay the privacy concerns, the company says customers will have to enable the feature themselves and then separately give consent to share the data with the company.</p>

<h2><strong>What if the host of a meeting enables this feature?</strong></h2>

<p>According to experts, the functioning of this feature could still present challenges for certain participants during Zoom calls, particularly when the host chooses to activate the generative AI capabilities.</p>

<p>Zoom has clarified that when a meeting organiser opts for the meeting summary function, participants will receive a notification informing them about the activation of an AI feature. This notification will also indicate the potential sharing of their data for AI training purposes. Participants will then have the option to proceed with the meeting or to exit.</p>

According to experts, the functioning of this feature could still present challenges for certain participants during Zoom calls, particularly when the host chooses to activate the generative AI capabilities. Zoom has clarified that when a meeting organiser opts for the meeting summary function, participants will receive a notification informing them about the activation of an AI feature. This notification will also indicate the potential sharing of their data for AI training purposes. Participants will then have the option to proceed with the meeting or to exit. <p>Jumping on the artificial intelligence (AI) bandwagon, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the Cupertino-based firm is investing heavily in AI even as the tech giant reported declining sales numbers.</p>

<p>The announcement was made on Thursday (Aug 3) as Apple recorded its third straight quarter of fall in sales and predicted a similar performance in the current period—the company’s most prolonged sales slump since 2016.</p>

<p>In the third fiscal quarter ending July 1, Apple’s sales fell 1.4 per cent to $81.8 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the company made a profit of $19.9bn over the quarter, higher than analysts had expected.</p>

<p>iPhone sales were weaker than the analyst estimates, but it was balanced by strong sales in the services segment that contains Apple&nbsp;TV+ and by sales in China that grew 8 per cent year over year, according to Reuters.</p>

<p>The iPhone sales in India also grew double-digits, however, the executives didn’t share the exact numbers.</p>

<h2><strong>Apple to invest heavily in generative AI</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking to the Reuters news agency, Tim Cook said that the company’s main focus is on generative artificial intelligence and added that a significant amount of R&amp;D has been dedicated to the field, which has been witnessing big spending by its technology rivals Alphabet and Microsoft.</p>

<p>“We’ve been doing research across a wide range of AI technologies, including generative AI, for years. We’re going to continue investing and innovating and responsibly advancing our products with these technologies to help enrich people’s lives,” Cook said.</p>

<p>“Obviously, we’re investing a lot, and it is showing up in the R&amp;D spending that you’re looking at.”</p>

<p>Apple has upped its research and development spending to around $22.61bn for the fiscal year so far, which is about $3.12bn higher than at this point in the previous year.</p>

Swipe right to perfection: Tinder tests AI-powered tool for picking your picture-perfect pose

<p>Last week, two papers by South Korean scientists made an extraordinary claim that sparked a social media frenzy and pushed up prices of some stocks in China and South Korea: the discovery of a practical superconductor.</p>

<p>Superconductors are materials that allow electrical current to flow with no resistance, a property that would revolutionise power grids where energy is lost in transmission as well as advance fields such as computing chips, where electrical resistance acts as a speed limit.</p>

<p>The papers, which appeared on a website used by scientists to share research before formal peer review and publication, spurred researchers around the world - including in at least two U.S. national labs and three Chinese universities - to take a closer look at the proposed material.</p>

<p>Superconducting materials already exist in places like MRI machines for medical imaging and some quantum computers, but only display their superconducting properties at extremely low temperatures, making them impractical for wide use.</p>

<p>The South Korean researchers last week said they found a superconductor that works at room temperature, which has long been considered a holy grail for scientists in the field.</p>

<p>The researchers also published a recipe for making the material - dubbed LK-99 - which involves taking a relatively common mineral called lead apatite and introducing a small number of copper atoms into it.</p>

<p>The South Korean researchers published two papers - one initial paper with three authors and a second, more detailed paper with six authors that included only two of the authors from the first paper. None of the authors contacted by Reuters responded to a request for comment.</p>

<p>Physicists interviewed by Reuters said the good news is that there is no law of physics that says a room temperature superconductor cannot exist, and the material described by the South Korean team is easy to grow, meaning other researchers should be able to start getting results as soon as this week.</p>

<p>The gold standard for proof of discovery is other labs reliably replicating the South Korean researchers' findings.</p>

<p>Researchers from at least three Chinese universities have in recent days said they produced versions of LK-99 with varying results. One team from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology posted a video purporting to show the material levitating over a magnet, which is important because true superconductors can float over a magnet in any orientation, without spinning like a compass.</p>

<p>But another team, from Qufu Normal University, said they did not observe zero resistance, one of required characteristics of a superconductor. A third, from the Southeast University in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, said they measured zero resistance, but only at a temperature of 110 Kelvin (-163 degree Celsius).</p>

<p>On Thursday, South Korean experts said they would set up a committee to verify the claims.</p>

<p>Eric Toone, a scientist-turned investor at Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said he is monitoring any peer review and reproduction efforts by reputable labs.</p>

<p>"The measurements you need to verify or to demonstrate superconductivity are very difficult to make," said Toone. "It's completely game changing if it's right, but until we have more validation, we just have to be patient."</p>

<h2><strong>'You can be fooled'</strong></h2>

<p>The possible bad news for LK-99 is that the superconducting field is full of materials that hold promise at first but fall apart under scrutiny. Researchers even have a handy name for them - unidentified superconducting objects.</p>

<p>"We call them USOs," said Mike Norman, a condensed matter physicist at Argonne National Laboratory. "There's a long history of USOs going a long way back, including some very famous people who thought they had a superconductor and they didn't. It's like anything in science - you can be fooled. Even good people can be fooled."</p>

<p>Norman said the original papers had problems. Some may have been honest typographical mistakes from rushing to post the research, but more troubling was a lack of data over a broad temperature range to show how the material behaves when it is in a superconducting state and when it is not.</p>

<p>"People often use that method to show how much of the sample is actually a superconductor and how much of it is not," Norman said.</p>

<p>Other researchers have also found reasons for caution. Sinéad Griffin, a solid-state physicist and staff scientist Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, used a U.S. Department of Energy supercomputer to simulate the proposed material.</p>

<p>Griffin found that inserting copper atoms into lead apatite caused the material's atoms to rearrange in an unexpected way that resembles existing superconductors. But that effect depends on the copper atoms going to a spot that they don't naturally want to go, which could make it harder to produce the material in bulk quantities.</p>

<p>Griffin cautioned that her simulation has limits - it cannot conclusively prove that the material is a superconductor, and the work assumed that researchers can place copper atoms into the lead apatite with perfect precision. In the real world, that's unlikely and could have a big effect on the material.</p>

<p>And even if LK-99 does turn out to be a room temperature superconductor, it will still take time to determine how useful it might be, said Michael Fuhrer, a professor of physics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. For example, Fuhrer said no data was provided on how much electrical current the material might be able to carry and still be a superconductor, a key question for improving power grids.</p>

<p>Still, Fuhrer and other physicists said the results are worth studying given all that remains unknown about superconductors and the possibility that they could be discovered serendipitously in a common material.</p>

<p>"There's lots and lots of minerals out there that we haven't looked at yet," said Argonne's Norman. "And there's probably some very interesting physics hiding in these minerals."<br />

A third, from the Southeast University in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, said they measured zero resistance, but only at a temperature of 110 Kelvin (-163 degree Celsius). On Thursday, South Korean experts said they would set up a committee to verify the claims. Eric Toone, a scientist-turned investor at Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said he is monitoring any peer review and reproduction efforts by reputable labs. "The measurements you need to verify or to demonstrate superconductivity are very difficult to make," said Toone. "It's completely game changing if it's right, but until we have more validation, we just have to be patient." 'You can be fooled' The possible bad news for LK-99 is that the superconducting field is full of materials that hold promise at first but fall apart under scrutiny. Researchers even have a handy name for them - unidentified superconducting objects. "We call them USOs," said Mike Norman, a condensed matter physicist at Argonne National Laboratory. "There's a long history of USOs going a long way back, including some very famous people who thought they had a superconductor and they didn't. It's like anything in science - you can be fooled. Even good people can be fooled." Norman said the original papers had problems. Some may have been honest typographical mistakes from rushing to post the research, but more troubling was a lack of data over a broad temperature range to show how the material behaves when it is in a superconducting state and when it is not. "People often use that method to show how much of the sample is actually a superconductor and how much of it is not," Norman said. Other researchers have also found reasons for caution. Sinéad Griffin, a solid-state physicist and staff scientist Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, used a U.S. Department of Energy supercomputer to simulate the proposed material. Griffin found that inserting copper atoms into lead apatite caused the material's atoms to rearrange in an unexpected way that resembles existing superconductors. But that effect depends on the copper atoms going to a spot that they don't naturally want to go, which could make it harder to produce the material in bulk quantities. Griffin cautioned that her simulation has limits - it cannot conclusively prove that the material is a superconductor, and the work assumed that researchers can place copper atoms into the lead apatite with perfect precision. In the real world, that's unlikely and could have a big effect on the material. And even if LK-99 does turn out to be a room temperature superconductor, it will still take time to determine how useful it might be, said Michael Fuhrer, a professor of physics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. For example, Fuhrer said no data was provided on how much electrical current the material might be able to carry and still be a superconductor, a key question for improving power grids. Still, Fuhrer and other physicists said the results are worth studying given all that remains unknown about superconductors and the possibility that they could be discovered serendipitously in a common material. "There's lots and lots of minerals out there that we haven't looked at yet," said Argonne's Norman. "And there's probably some very interesting physics hiding in these minerals." Google to bring privacy tools which will delete unwanted ‘personal’ images

<p>Reportedly, the regulations released by the Cyberspace Administration of China represent some of the harshest restrictions globally.</p>

<p>As per the draft of rules published on the overseer's website, one main provision limits "non-adult" children from accessing the internet using mobile devices between 10 pm and 6 am. Furthermore, mobile usage time for children between the ages of 16 and 18 has been limited to a maximum of two hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They've had a positive impact in lessening youth internet addiction and curbing the impact of undesirable information."</p>

<p>The agency is currently seeking public feedback on the regulations, which based on it may change.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ensuring compliance</strong></h2>

<p>To ensure compliance, the agency has specified measures like periodic checks and assessments, as well as on request access to both data and technology.&nbsp;</p>

AI can now read breast cancer scans. What it means for jobs in radiology?

<p>An Australian senate committee after investigating how foreign powers could use social media to interfere in the country has recommended a number of rules and restrictions for several platforms, including imposing a ban on Chinese messaging WeChat, on Tuesday (August 1). Months back, the Australian government said it would remove TikTok from all federal government-owned devices over security concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Committee’s recommendation</strong></h2>

<p>The report released on Tuesday, along with a ban on WeChat, also consists of 17 other recommendations, including new transparency rules enforceable by fines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The five-people committee led by Liberal Party Senator and shadow cyber security minister, James Paterson, also called for the ban on TikTok from federal government devices in Canberra to be extended to the devices of government contractors who also have access to Australian government data. This extended ban should also cover WeChat, according to the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lawmakers have said they had been “particularly concerned” with the “unique national security risks” posed by companies like TikTok and WeChat “whose parent companies ByteDance and Tencent respectively, are irrefutably headquartered in and run from authoritarian countries like China”.</p>

<p>It also recommends the government should enforce a set of transparency rules for social media platforms which include, having an Australian presence,&nbsp;labelling state-affiliated media,&nbsp;disclosing content censorship,&nbsp;actions against accounts of elected officials, and government directions about content on their platforms.</p>

<p>If the social media platforms fail to meet the minimum transparency requirements or to abide by the rules, the companies should be fined and banned, as a last resort, at the discretion of the home affairs minister.</p>

<p>The committee also recommended that if the United States government forced ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok, then the Australian government should also consider similar steps and ensure TikTok Australia is also separated from its China-based parent company.</p>

<p>Paterson told the Senate on Tuesday, how the health of social media networks directly affects the health of the country and foreign “authoritarian states know this”. The committee also recommended that Canberra help developing countries in the Indo-Pacific resist “malicious information operations” by authoritarian states.</p>

<p>“They (authoritarian states) do not permit free debate on their own social media platforms. They use ours as a vector for information operations to shape our decision-making in their national interest – at the expense of our own,” said Paterson, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also said that not all social media platforms are the same since the ability for a social media platform to be “weaponised” varies depending on the laws of the country where it is headquartered.</p>

Committee’s recommendation The report released on Tuesday, along with a ban on WeChat, also consists of 17 other recommendations, including new transparency rules enforceable by fines. The five-people committee led by Liberal Party Senator and shadow cyber security minister, James Paterson, also called for the ban on TikTok from federal government devices in Canberra to be extended to the devices of government contractors who also have access to Australian government data. This extended ban should also cover WeChat, according to the report. Lawmakers have said they had been “particularly concerned” with the “unique national security risks” posed by companies like TikTok and WeChat “whose parent companies ByteDance and Tencent respectively, are irrefutably headquartered in and run from authoritarian countries like China”. It also recommends the government should enforce a set of transparency rules for social media platforms which include, having an Australian presence, labelling state-affiliated media, disclosing content censorship, actions against accounts of elected officials, and government directions about content on their platforms. If the social media platforms fail to meet the minimum transparency requirements or to abide by the rules, the companies should be fined and banned, as a last resort, at the discretion of the home affairs minister. The committee also recommended that if the United States government forced ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok, then the Australian government should also consider similar steps and ensure TikTok Australia is also separated from its China-based parent company. Paterson told the Senate on Tuesday, how the health of social media networks directly affects the health of the country and foreign “authoritarian states know this”. The committee also recommended that Canberra help developing countries in the Indo-Pacific resist “malicious information operations” by authoritarian states. “They (authoritarian states) do not permit free debate on their own social media platforms. They use ours as a vector for information operations to shape our decision-making in their national interest – at the expense of our own,” said Paterson, as quoted by The Guardian. The Guardian reported that it takes more than 18 hours for a signal to travel from Voyager 2 to Earth, given it is located more than 19bn km away from our home planet.</p>

<p>The US space agency has said it will bombard Voyager 2’s vicinity with the correct command so that it hits the mark if the signal manages to reach the spacecraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The signals will be sent from Canberra’s antenna in the coming weeks, said Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).</p>

One wrong command and NASA's Voyager 2 goes dark in interstellar space

<p>The giant and illuminating ‘X’ sign atop the San Francisco headquarters of the company formerly known as Twitter was dismantled on Monday (July 31) morning, just days after it was installed, following complaints about its safety and lack of permit.</p>

<p>Over the weekend, the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection received 24 complaints about the sign including "concerns about its structural safety and illumination”.</p>

<p>"I thought it was lightning, and I was very confused. I went to my window, I looked around, I didn't see anything. I thought it was maybe a police siren," resident Patricia Wallinga, who lives across the street, told CBS News.</p>

<p>After the rebranding announcement on July 23, the ‘X’ logo was hurriedly erected atop the building and was partly supported by sandbags.</p>

<p>Later, the city opened a complaint and launched a probe on the day the sign went up after it deemed X “unsafe” because it was built without a safety permit.</p>

<p>“Any replacement letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure consistency with the historic nature of the building and to make sure additions are safely attached to the sign," a spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection&nbsp;told The Associated Press.</p>

<p>Department of Building Inspection spokesperson Patrick Hannan said that a city inspector tried to get to the building's roof when the complaints started pouring in but he was denied access twice.</p>

<p>In an interview with The Verge, Hannan said that no permit is needed to take down the logo but, "due to safety concerns, the permit can be secured after the structure is taken down."</p>

<p>He said that the building’s owner would be fined for “building permits for the installation and removal of the structure” and to cover the department’s inspection and investigation costs.</p>

<p>In a leaked email procured by the WSJ, Nick Clegg, the company’s president of global affairs in July 2021 wrote, “Can someone quickly remind me why we were removing — rather than demoting/labeling — claims that Covid is man made.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Subsequently, the Facebook vice president in charge of content policy wrote, “We were under pressure from the administration and others to do more,” referencing the Biden administration, as quoted by the WSJ. The VP added, “We shouldn’t have done it.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The emails in question were exchanged months after the social media platform had decided to end its policy of banning certain posts questioning whether COVID-19 was the result of a leak from Chinese virology lab in Wuhan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The WSJ also published an email that was circulated after Biden, in July 2021, accused platforms like Facebook of “killing people” by allowing so-called “misinformation” to propagate unchecked. The Facebook VP after a few days also circulated a memo that showed the difference between the company's content policies and the Biden administration’s demands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There is likely a significant gap between what the WH would like us to remove and what we are comfortable removing,” wrote the Facebook executive. The WSJ report citing an email from the VP further said that the White House also wanted the social media platform to take down humorous or satirical content that suggested the COVID-19 vaccines aren’t safe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To which Clegg responded: “I can’t see Mark [Zuckerberg] in a million years being comfortable with removing that – and I wouldn’t recommend it.”<br />

Furthermore, Facebook executives also expressed concerns that taking down posts showing American users reluctant about getting vaccinated could further fuel vaccine hesitancy and even warned that removing such posts could give rise to conspiracy theories, reported the WSJ.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Facebook files’</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The report by the Journal also comes a day after the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee&nbsp;is in the midst of investigating what GOP lawmakers have claimed is the Biden administration’s unlawful censoring of users on social media.</p>

<p>The lawsuit was filed by Republican attorneys general of the US states of Missouri and Louisiana, in 2022, and accused the Biden administration of pressuring social media platforms to take down dissenting views, including criticism of mask mandates and objections to COVID-19 vaccination.</p>

<p>On Thursday, the GOP lawmaker from Ohio, Jim Jordan reasserted his claims of pressure on Facebook to censor conservative comments after he abruptly called off a vote Thursday to hold Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a series of tweets, Jordan revealed what he claimed were “never-before-released” documents contained in the House Judiciary Committee’s subpoena, which he called “Facebook files” and asserted “that Facebook and Instagram censored posts”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jordan also claimed that the alleged censorship and change in content moderation policies of the social media platform were changed due to “unconstitutional pressure” from the Biden administration.</p>

<p>One of these emails was written in April 2021, when a Facebook employee circulated an email for Facebook CEO Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, writing: “We are facing continued pressure from external stakeholders, including the [Biden] White House” to remove posts.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>White House reaffirms stance</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, the White House, on Thursday said that the discussions with social media companies were aimed at protecting public health, safety, and security during a pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We have consistently made clear that we believe social media companies have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects that their platforms have on the American people, while making independent decisions about the content of their platforms,” said the White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She added, “That continues to be the case. That has not changed, on what we believe here.”</p>

<p>In a series of social media posts and a chain of events that occurred in late June, the Facebook parent company Meta CEO and X owner, formerly known as Twitter, ‘agreed’ to a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/elon-musks-big-update-ahead-of-his-cage-fight-with-mark-zuckerberg-stst-610514">“cage match”</a> against each other.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk tweeted with a crying-laughing emoji.</p>

<p>A Twitter user replied to Musk saying he should be careful of Zuckerberg since the Facebook boss had been practising jiu-jitsu, a Brazilian martial art form.&nbsp;</p>
