<p>“The hype has somewhat sort of run ahead of the technology,” Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Facebook and Instagram parent firm Meta, told the BBC on Wednesday (July 19).</p>

<p>“I think a lot of the warnings of existential threats relate to models that don’t currently exist, so-called superintelligent, super powerful AI models. In other words, the vision of AI where AI develops some autonomy and agency and it can think for itself, it can reproduce itself.”</p>

<h2><strong>Meta comes up with own AI chatbot—Llama 2</strong></h2>

<p>The remarks from Clegg, who is also the former UK deputy prime minister, came after Meta announced that it is making its own AI large language model (LLM), Llama 2.</p>

<p>Mark Zuckerberg said that Llama 2 would be open source and available for free to the public.</p>

<p>Nick asserted that Meta’s AI model was “safer” than rivals and had been fined tuned by hundreds of attempts to break it.</p>

<p>When asked about the risks the models posed, Nick said they “cannot build a nuclear bomb”.</p>

<p>The chief executives of Intel Corp and Qualcomm Inc are planning to visit Washington next week to discuss China policy, according to two sources familiar with the matter.</p>

<p>The executives plan to hold meetings with US officials to talk about market conditions, export controls and other matters affecting their businesses, one of the sources said. It was not immediately clear whom the executives would meet.</p>

<p>Intel and Qualcomm declined to comment, and officials at the White House did not immediately return a request for comment.</p>

<p>The sources said other semiconductor CEOs may also be in Washington next week. The sources declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.</p>

<p>Elon Musk’s lawyers have claimed that once the 52-year-old billionaire took over the company last year in March, the FTC intensified its investigation into the company which “has spiralled out of control and become tainted by bias,” AP news agency reported.</p>

<p>The FTC has been monitoring Twitter since it gave consent to the order in 2011 following allegations of security data lapses. But the lawyers have claimed bias once Musk bought the company.</p>

<p>It comes after reports in March revealed that FTC was probing Musk's mass layoffs at Twitter and trying to obtain his internal communications as part of ongoing oversight into the social media company's privacy and cybersecurity practices, according to documents described in a congressional report.</p>

<p>In May 2022, Twitter paid nearly $150 million for violating the 2011 consent order, about five months before Musk took over.</p>

<p>An updated version established new procedures requiring the company to implement an enhanced privacy-protection program as well as beefing up information security.</p>

<p>Google has also now added new features to Bard, which apply worldwide.</p>

<p>"Starting today, you can collaborate with Bard in over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi and Spanish," Google senior product director Jack Krawczyk said in a blog post.</p>

<p>"Sometimes hearing something out loud can help you approach your idea in a different way ... This is especially helpful if you want to hear the correct pronunciation of a word or listen to a poem or script."</p>

<p>Krawczyk said that Bard users can now change the tone and style of the chatbot's responses to simple, long, short, professional or casual. The users can pin or rename conversations. They would also be able to export code to more places and use images in their prompts.</p>

<p>Local privacy regulators in Europe have held up Bard's launch in the EU. Krawczyk said that Google had since then met the regulators to reassure them of&nbsp;transparency, choice and control.</p>

The team involved in the startup includes several former engineers at Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. New features in Bard Google has also now added new features to Bard, which apply worldwide. "Starting today, you can collaborate with Bard in over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi and Spanish," Google senior product director Jack Krawczyk said in a blog post. "Sometimes hearing something out loud can help you approach your idea in a different way ... This is especially helpful if you want to hear the correct pronunciation of a word or listen to a poem or script." Krawczyk said that Bard users can now change the tone and style of the chatbot's responses to simple, long, short, professional or casual. The users can pin or rename conversations. They would also be able to export code to more places and use images in their prompts. Local privacy regulators in Europe have held up Bard's launch in the EU. Krawczyk said that Google had since then met the regulators to reassure them of transparency, choice and control. Subramanya declined to comment on whether there were plans to develop a Bard app. "Bard is an experiment," he added. "We want to be bold and responsible." <p>Texas-based Venus Aerospace is building a hypersonic aircraft that can emulate and perhaps overtake the highs achieved by&nbsp;the legendary Concorde. The aircraft named 'Stargazer is expected to carry about a dozen passengers and travel at Mach 9 or nine times the speed of sound, which equates to about 8,000km/h (5,000mph).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Measuring&nbsp;50 feet long by 100 feet wide,&nbsp;Stargazer is designed to hurtle from San Francisco to Tokyo in a record one hour – 11 times faster than today’s flight time. By comparison, Concorde, which operated between 1973-2003 travelled at Mach 2 or about, 1,535 mph. The fastest aircraft ever built, Lockheed’s SR-71 “Blackbird,” travelled at Mach 3.2 (2,455 mph).</p>

<p>Venus co-founder and CTO Andrew Duggleby said the one-hour global transport could be turned into reality using a&nbsp;combination of jet and rocket engines.&nbsp;Duggleby said Stargazer would take off using traditional jet engines but once it is away from the urban dwellings, it would employ rocket engines to climb to&nbsp;170,000 feet and reach hypersonic speeds.</p>

San Francisco to Japan. Houston To London. All with a 2-hour turn-around," the company claims on its website.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about how the idea of developing a hypersonic jet came into being, Sassie&nbsp;Duggleby, wife of Andrew, as well as chief executive officer at Venus Aerospace referred to an incident from 2018.&nbsp;</p>

However, as per Reuters, he will lead xAI in its quest to challenge major tech firms.</p>

<p>The xAI team includes notable individuals such as Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at DeepMind, Tony Wu, who previously worked at Google, Christian Szegedy, a former research scientist at Google, and Greg Yang, who was earlier associated with Microsoft.</p>

<p>As per a state filing, in March, Musk registered a company named X.AI Corp in Nevada. The document lists him as the sole director of the firm, while Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, is listed as the secretary.</p>

<p>Dan Hendrycks, who currently serves as the director of the Center for AI Safety, with his work focusing on the risks associated with AI, will serve as an adviser to the xAI team.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, in April, Musk announced his intention to launch TruthGPT, an AI system focused on seeking maximum truth, to rival Google's Bard and Microsoft's Bing AI, which as per him will aim to understand the nature of the universe.</p>

<p>Generative AI gained significant attention with the release of OpenAI's popular chatbot, ChatGPT, in November of the previous year, preceding the launches of Bard and Bing AI.</p>

<p>The xAI website while emphasising its commitment to assembling a skilled team has also announced the startup's plans to recruit experienced engineers and researchers in the Bay Area.</p>

<p>Since Threads is closely tied to Instagram, one can log in with your Instagram username and easily follow all the same people you follow on the other platform.</p>

<p>Meta has extended some of Instagram’s privacy controls to Threads as well, such as the ability to filter out certain words in replies.</p>

<p>The app also gives users the option to limit who can reply to your threads to everyone on the platform, people you follow, or only the users who you mentioned in your post.</p>
