Spain will surely join them when they face Zambia, the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, later Wednesday.

Costa Rica, well beaten 3-0 by Spain, were floored again by a devastating first-half spell from the Japanese who grabbed two rapid-fire goals.

Outclassed Costa Rica's tournament is realistically already over.

The Matildas went on strike in 2015 to demand better pay and have received the same minimum percentage of prize money for tournaments as the Australia national men's team, the Socceroos, since a 2019 collective bargaining agreement. However, they will compete for a fraction of the $440 million total prize pool offered to the men's teams at last year's World Cup in Qatar.

"Seven hundred and thirty-six&nbsp;footballers have the honour of representing their countries on the biggest stage this tournament, yet many are still denied the basic right to organise and collectively bargain,” the players say in the video.

"Collective bargaining has allowed us to ensure we now get the same conditions as the Socceroos, with one exception – FIFA will still only offer women one quarter as much prize money as men for the same achievement.

"We call on those who run the game to work to provide opportunities for girls and women in&nbsp;football, whether that be players, coaches, administrators or officials."

Global governing body FIFA did not provide immediate comment. The total prize pool for the Women's World Cup is $110 million, roughly 300% higher than what FIFA offered for the 2019 tournament in France. FIFA is aiming for prize money parity by the time of the next men's and women's World Cups in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Players from Women's World Cup teams England, Canada and Nigeria have been in dispute with their federations over pay in the leadup to the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. The Matildas' message suggested gender equity in sport would again be a major point of discussion during the tournament, as it was in 2019 when the United States' pay dispute with their federation took the spotlight.

New Zealand midfielder Olivia Chance told Reuters it was natural for women to "push for equal".

"We are pushing for better standards of the game and I think it's only natural when you see an organisation that maybe are giving more - because they always have - then you're going to push for equal," she said.

"In a workplace, if you see someone getting more, you're going to push," she added, noting that she had not yet seen the video message. "That's just natural as a human being."

The Matildas' statement is reminiscent of the video released by the Socceroos ahead of the 2022 World Cup which spoke out against Qatar's record on human rights and same-sex relationships.

Recently, India great Jhulan Goswami -- who ended her international career last year with most ODI wickets by a woman (255) -- recalled the heartbreaking loss while interacting with Anjum Chopra.

In Jhulan's last international game, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India created history as they whitewashed England in a three-match ODI series, in England. It was India's first-ever ODI series triumph in the country. Thus, Anjum asked Jhulan whether&nbsp;there could have been a better script&nbsp;as she ended&nbsp;with a victory at the same venue and against the same opponent who defeated India in the CWC'17 final.&nbsp;

'That was a very sad moment': Jhulan Goswami recalls Mithali Raj-led India's CWC'17 final loss

Former FIFA Council member Moya Dodd has criticised Gianni Infantino's threat of a Women's World Cup broadcast blackout in Europe this year and said the governing body is responsible for the tournament being historically undervalued. FIFA is selling TV rights to the women's tournament separately from the men's for the first time and President Infantino said Europe's "Big 5" nations face a blackout unless broadcasters improve on their "unacceptable" offers.

Broadcasters from Britain, Spain, France, Germany and Italy had offered only $1 million-$10 million for the rights, compared to $100 million-$200 million for the men's World Cup, he added. Dodd, an ex-Australia international, said the broadcast industry had undervalued the women's tournament as FIFA had sold the rights together with the men's. "Now that FIFA has decided to sell the rights separately, it's no surprise that the buyers don't want to pay the same big numbers twice," Dodd told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Effectively, the industry was trained to pay big money for the men's World Cup and treat the women's equivalent as worthless. At the same time, the women were told they didn't deserve prize money or equal pay because they didn't bring the revenues. It's actually quite outrageous for FIFA to now say that all women's revenues will go straight into women's&nbsp;football since it overlooks the fact that the value of women's rights has until now been used to inflate the value of men's&nbsp;football."

Infantino said broadcasters had offered only $1 million-$10 million for the rights, compared to $100 million-$200 million for rights to the men's World Cup.

Due to the time-zone difference, Women's World Cup matches will be held outside prime-time viewing hours for European markets but Infantino said that was no excuse.

"Maybe ... it’s not played on prime-time in Europe, but still, it is played at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., so it is quite a reasonable time," he said.

Some 1.12 billion viewers tuned into the 2019 Women's World Cup in France across all platforms, according to a FIFA audit of the tournament.
