<p>Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell made a dazzling return to international cricket to help West Indies cruise to a four-wicket victory over England in the opening Twenty20 international in Barbados on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Handed a shock recall after a two-year absence, Russell shone with bat and ball at Kensington Oval as the home side reached the victory target with ease to finish on 172-6 from 18.1 overs.</p>

<p>The 35-year-old Russell was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with three wickets for 19 runs off four overs as world champions England were all out for 171.</p>

<p>Russell, alongside skipper Rovman Powell, who was unbeaten on 31, then produced a quick-fire 29 not out to see West Indies home after a mid-innings wobble threatened to allow England back into the contest.</p>

<p>Russell's innings off just 14 balls included two fours and two sixes, including a monstrous six out of the ground over midwicket off Adil Rashid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>West Indies blasted 14 sixes throughout the innings, including two huge swipes from opener Kyle Mayers early on which also flew out of the ground.</p>

<p>Russell later slashed a sublime shot over backward point off Sam Curran for four runs to seal victory and a superb individual performance.</p>

<p>"Life is so funny," man-of-the-match Russell said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Since when I got selected for the West Indies team I've been dreaming for two weeks now -- and I was dreaming of being man of the match."</p>

<p>England skipper Jos Buttler was left to rue the tourists' inability to cash in on a strong start to their innings which included a 77-run opening partnership.</p>

<p>"From the position we were in, we were looking for a score of 200," said Buttler, who scored 39 while fellow opener Phil Salt put on a stylish 40 off 20 balls.</p>

<p>"We want to keep pushing the boundaries and trying to be as positive as we can.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their first task will be the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. England have made five changes to their T20I squad from the one who played the ODIs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The five changes are: Chris Woakes, Rashid, Moeen Ali, Reece Topley and Tymal Mills who replace Ollie Pope, Zak Crawley, Matthew Potts, Tom Hartley and Brydon Carse.</p>

<p>The T20I series starts December 12 in Bridgetown.</p>

You will have to give that preference to the experienced guy and I will not be surprised if they decide to go ahead with Rohit Sharma himself." Zaheer opined, "He’s the guy who has been around for a while. He understands handling situations, handling pressure, all those kind of aspects. You still have time for all these other names (talking about the several players who have led in recent times -- such as Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Hardik, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc.) which are there in that list to take the mantle forward." Even the likes of former cricketers such as Gautam Gambhir and Parthiv Patel have voted for Rohit to lead India in the next T20 WC. Narine, a member of the West Indies' 2012 ICC T20 World Cup winning side, last played for the team in August 2019 in a T20I match against India at Providence.</p>

<p>Taking to his Instagram handle, the 35-year-old wrote: “I appreciate it has been over four years since I last played for West Indies, but today, I am announcing my retirement from International cricket."</p>

<p>"Publicly, I am a man of few words, but privately, there are a few people who have given me unwavering support throughout my career and helped me realise my dream of representing West Indies, and to you, I express my deepest gratitude."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Narine thanked his family, especially his father, and others as he walked away from top-level cricket.</p>

<p>Openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh hit 99 and 66 respectively to help Nepal to 290 for eight wickets off their 50 overs at the Harare Sports Club.</p>

<p>Wellington Masakadza eventually claimed both Bhurtel and Sheikh's wickets and Richard Ngarava took 4-43 off his nine overs.</p>

<p>In front of a large crowd, Zimbabwe lost Joylord Gumbie (25) and Wessly Madhevere (32) before Ervine and Williams took control of Nepal's bowling attack.</p>

<p>"We didn't start really well, dropped catches cost us but credit to the guys for pulling it back. We thought that 280/290 would be chaseable because the wicket looked very nice," said Ervine. "I think it's well played today, rest day tomorrow and a quick turnaround when we play the Netherlands next on Tuesday."</p>

<p>The action continues Monday, with Sri Lanka facing the United Arab Emirates and Ireland taking on Oman in Group B matches at Bulawayo.</p>

<p>Changes to the format for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup mean only ten teams will participate in the mega event in India later this year. While eight nations, including former winners, have already qualified, teams like Sri Lanka and West Indies are fighting for those two remaining spots, alongside eight other teams in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. And as things stand, West Indies’ chances of going through look bleak, something most cricket fans, especially veteran batter Chris Gayle, are upset about.</p>

<p>The inaugural winners in 1975 and then champions again four years later, West Indies, for the first time in cricket history, could miss out on playing the 50-over World Cup. In the Qualifier, they are sitting in the bottom position after losing two crucial matches, one against the hosts, Zimbabwe, and the other against the Netherlands – a game dubbed by many as one of the best.</p>

<p>For the West Indies to go through, they must win their remaining three matches against Scotland, Oman and Sri Lanka (in that order), in addition to hoping several other results go in their favour. Though it looks highly unlikely that they will go through, theoretically, it’s still possible.</p>

<p>Speaking on watching a World Cup without West Indies, former two-time T20 World Cup winner with them, Chris Gayle expressed his disappointment saying he and all those who looked up to West Indies as a team and for culture would be gutted.</p>

<p>“It wouldn't look so good. Not seeing the West Indies in the World Cup, is going to be sad. It will be sad for the West Indies and the fans as well. Not only West Indian fans but also people who are hooked to West Indian culture. Not seeing the West Indies in this World Cup will feel so bad and sad. It's going to be disappointing if they don't make it to the World Cup. I'll be gutted,” Gayle said while chatting with the Times of India (TOI).</p>

<h2>There is hope</h2>

<p>Although Gayle remains aware of the permutations and combinations of how West Indies can qualify for the 2023 World Cup, he still feels there is hope that the side from the Caribbean will seal the WC berth.</p>

<p>“Things look a bit dim, but there's still a chance, and once there's a chance, there's hope. So, hopefully, they can actually win all three games, and hopefully, some miracle happens, some hiccup happens with the points table, and they get a chance as well. But it's going to be difficult, but let's hope things can change for the better for the West Indies,” Gayle added.</p>

<p>Shimron Hetmyer, playing international cricket for the first time in 12 months, starred in the field for the&nbsp;West&nbsp;Indies&nbsp;taking three catches and effecting the run-out of Arshdeep Singh in the final over to bring the low-scoring clash to a conclusion.</p>

<p>The 20-year-old Varma, who helped light up the IPL with 343 runs for the Mumbai Indians this season, hit three sixes in his 22-ball innings.</p>

<p>Two of his sixes came in the first three balls he faced from Alzarri Joseph.</p>

<p>His innings ended on the last ball of the 11th over when he was caught at fine leg by Hetmyer off pace bowler Romario Shepherd with the total at 77.</p>

<p>Ten runs earlier, Suryakumar had been the third wicket to fall, brilliantly caught by Hetmyer who dived to his left at short extra cover off the bowling of Jason Holder.</p>

<p>Skipper Hardik Pandya (19), Axar Patel (13) and Singh (12) all made useful contributions but struggled to force the pace on a slow pitch at the Brian Lara Stadium.</p>

<p>Holder was particularly impressive for the&nbsp;West&nbsp;Indies&nbsp;with figures of 2-19 from his four overs and was named man of the match.</p>

Meanwhile, Morrisville and Dallas are currently hosting the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the country.</p>

<p>Besides these 12 teams, three more, including Ireland and Scotland (for securing the top two spots in Europe Region Qualifier) and Papua New Guinea (PNG), made the list after guaranteeing a first-place finish in East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.</p>

<p>With 15 out of the 20 slots filled, the remaining five will get determined from Qualifiers from the Americas (for one spot), Africa (two) and Asia (two) in the coming months.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, unlike the format in the previous two editions, this tournament will see a new one in place. All 20 teams will get divided into groups of four, with each group containing five teams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round, where four teams will again be placed into two groups, and the top two sides there will further move to the semis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I had simple plans and just executed them. The captain just asked me to keep on doing what I have been doing before."</p>

"Certainly, I felt we let ourselves down here in the entire tournament. But yeah, we need to look at the way we start our innings [and] definitely the fielding."</p>

<p>Hope agreed that their preparation had to be better and they can't expect to be a great team overnight.</p>

<p>"It starts from the foundation. Preparation needs to be better. That's from back home," Hope added. "So, yeah, it starts from there. We can't just expect to wake up one morning and be a great team. There's a lot of things that we need to focus on. And yeah, we need to control (what) we can control. Right now, we are here playing cricket, and we need to make sure we give our all to the West Indian fans."</p>

<p>West Indies fielding has been poor throughout the qualifiers and the West Indian skipper profoundly admitted that, saying the team didn't give their 100 per cent&nbsp;every single time.</p>

<p>In a shocking turn of events, two-time ODI World Cup Champions West Indies have been knocked out of the quadrennial tournament's upcoming edition. West Indies needed to beat Scotland in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers but the minnow showed them out instead.</p>

<p>This was also Scotland's first victory over West Indies in ODI cricket. The 1975 and '79 ODI WC champion and 1983 runners-up will now not be travelling to India for the 13th edition of the tournament. &nbsp;</p>

<p>After losing the toss, West Indies were asked to bat first. They had a horrid start as they lost their first four wickets inside 10 overs - they were reeling at 30/4 in 6.5 overs to be exact. The day got even worse as they were pinned down by the Scottish bowlers and soon found themselves at six down for 81.</p>

<p>Brandon McMullen took three wickets for Scotland. Chris Sole, Mark Watt and Chris Greaves chipped in with two each and Safyaan Sharif took one wicket.</p>

<p>Chasing 182, Christopher McBride got out on the first ball but it was all doom after that for West Indies. Matthew Cross (74) and Brandon McMullen (69) added 125 for the second wicket as all hopes for West Indies were dashed. Scotland reached the target with seven wickets in hand and around six overs left. McMullen was awarded Man of the Match for his three wickets and 69 runs.</p>

<p>West Indies needed to finish in the top two in the Super Six stage after failing to get any carry-forward points in the stage post their loss to Zimbabwe and Netherlands. The 2023 ODI World Cup will begin on October 5 in India.</p>

<p>Holder, who was part of two 50-over World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2019, expressed his disappointment over his team missing out this time.</p>

<p>"It's disappointing, especially after last year's effort in the T20 (World Cup - where West Indies did not make the Super 12s). I've had the luxury of playing in two fifty-over World Cups before and some T20 World Cups. There are special occasions so this one will hurt as the one last year did," Holder added.</p>

<p>India's next assignment is against West Indies where they are slated to play two Test, three ODIs and five T20Is. Gavaskar, however, isn't bothered about that much and said that the upcoming tour can't be the excuse to brush WTC Final loss under the carpet.</p>

<p>"You cannot brush this under the carpet like 'yeah we have got two matches against West Indies'. West Indies are not the best team in the world. You just go and hammer them 2-0, 3-0, whatever the matches are. This doesn't mean anything because when you come across and if you go to the finals and if you are playing Australia again, making the same mistakes, then how would you win the trophy?" he added.</p>

<p>Notably, Rohit's decision to drop number one Test-ranked bowler Ravi Ashwin also met with a lot of criticism by fans and cricket experts alike, including from Sachin Tendulkar. The skipper, however, had said at the toss on day 1 of the final that it was hard to drop the ace spinner but the decision was needed for the team.</p>

<p>Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy recently opened up on pay disparity between cricket boards around the world and said love for the game doesn't buy groceries. Sammy, who led West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016, said there is a huge gap when it comes to the salaries&nbsp;of cricketers in different countries around the world.</p>

<p>Sammy said that gone are the days when players used to play for the love of the game before highlighting the staggering gap in payscales of the West Indies compared to their Indian counterparts. While top Indian stars earn a whopping Rs 7 crore (USD 8,45,828 approx) a year, West Indies cricketers make USD 150,000 (Rs 1.2 crore roughly)&nbsp; annually through central contracts.</p>

<p>Sammy feels the pay disparity among the cricket boards makes it difficult for the smaller ones to hold on to their players and stop them from plying their trade in different T20 leagues around the globe.</p>

<p>West Indies head coach Phil Simmons will step down from his role at the end of this year, following the Caribbean side's debacle at the ongoing T20 World Cup where they failed to reach the Super 12 stage.</p>

<p>West Indies, the T20 World Cup's most successful team with triumphs in 2012 and 2016, crashed out of the showpiece event in the group stage, after losses to Scotland and Ireland. They beat Zimbabwe in the round-robin league but that was good enough to finish at the bottom of the four-team group.</p>

<p>This was the first time West Indies failed to advance further from the group stage since the inaugural tournament in South Africa in 2007.</p>

<p>"His last assignment will be the upcoming two-Test series against Australia from 30 November to 12 December," Cricket West Indies (CWI) said in a statement on Monday night.</p>

<p>Some reports in the local media said that his contract requires that he gives his employers 12 weeks' notice and hence his exit will happen in January next year.</p>

<p>The 59-year-old, a former West Indies all-rounder, described the side's early exit from the T20 World Cup as unfathomable.</p>

<p>"We weren't good enough and we now have to watch a tournament play-out without our involvement. It's unfathomable and for that I deeply apologise to our fans and followers," said Simmons who played 26 Tests and 143 ODIs from 1987 to 1999.</p>

<p>He was at the helm of affairs in 2016 when West Indies won their second T20 World Cup title, defeating England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After his first short stint, Simmons was appointed head coach again in October 2019 for a four-year tenure. However, he was controversially dismissed at that time also.</p>

<p>"From a personal perspective this is not a knee-jerk reaction, but a move I have been considering for some time, and now is the time to make public that I will step down as West Indies Head Coach at the end of the Test series against Australia.</p>

<p>"It is earlier than hoped for, but I will now focus my energies in Australia on continuing to build on the excellent progress the Test team has made."</p>
