Five police officers have been suspended over the killing of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed during custody last Saturday in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The suspended officers include Station House Officer Ashwani Kumar Singh from the Shahganj police station, two Inspector rank officers and two constables. The five cops have been already questioned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the UP police. The suspension came on the same day as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a meeting to apprehend Ahmed's wife Shaista Praveen and Guddu Muslim - the other accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Atiq Ahmed was shot dead on April 16 in Prayagraj while he and his brother Ashraf, both accused in the Umesh Pal murder case were being taken for a medical assessment at the MLN Medical College which comes under the jurisdiction of the Shahganj Police Station. The three assailants, masquerading as reporters managed to spray bullets point blank into the Ahmed brothers while police officers and journalists stood nearby. According to a postmortem report, Atiq was killed after receiving at least nine bullets in his chest and head. The first bullet was fired at his temple which led to instant death. Meanwhile, Ashraf sustained five bullet wounds. One hit him in the face while four entered his body through the back. The autopsy was conducted by a panel of five doctors at the Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital and matched the visuals of the attack caught on cameras. <p>Atiq Ahmed, the notorious gangster, five-time MLA and once an MP from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was killed on live TV along with his brother Ashraf by a gang of three assassins on Saturday night. The incident took place when Ahmed&nbsp;and&nbsp;his brother Ashraf were being taken for a mandatory medical checkup in the Prayagraj district of the state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No sooner did Ahmed step out of the police car and start&nbsp;addressing the media that three assassins, posing as reporters, took everyone by surprise and&nbsp;pumped bullets into his head from a point-blank range.&nbsp; Before the police could react, several rounds of bullets were fired and Ahmed siblings were lying cold and lifeless on the asphalt. The assassins identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny threw their weapons and were instantly captured by the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though facing criminal charges in myriad cases, Ahmed was brought to Prayagraj from Sabarmati jail in the western Indian state of Gujarat for a hearing in the Umesh Pal murder case. Ahmed and his coterie of gangsters had indulged in the barbaric killing of Pal, who was a key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case, in which Ahmed was charge-sheeted.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The killing of Ahmed has divided the public. While some argue that the gangster had it coming for his cauldron of crimes had&nbsp;been filled to the brim, others say it was a win for mobocracy, setting&nbsp;a dangerous precedent as India takes pride in being one of the biggest democracies in the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Whatever end of the moral spectrum one finds themselves nestled in, one fact is clear that a gangster who had more than 100 cases lodged against him met a fate that he had predicted long ago. But who was Atiq Ahmed and why did the authorities remain hapless against him all these years?&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The genesis of Atiq Ahmed</strong></h2>

<p>Ahmed first made an impression in the crime alleys&nbsp;of Prayagraj (Allahabad as it was known back then) when he was accused of murder at the age of 17 in 1979. In 1983, the first FIR was registered against him and it was his formal foray into the criminal world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ahmed remained at large from law enforcement authorities, primarily due to his political connections. He first contested the assembly elections from the Allahabad West seat in 1989 and emerged victorious. He went on to win the MLA election&nbsp;for five consecutive times, switching parties twice in between.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having tasted power as an MLA, Ahmed took a step ahead and contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 on a Samajwadi Party ticket. He fought from Phulpur and secured access to the parliament and became a member of the 14th Lok Sabha. Notably, this was the same seat from where India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru won the general elections, a record three times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When it was pointed out that Ahmed contested from the same seat, he had this to say, “<em>Pandit ji ki tarah hum Naini Jail me bhi rahe hain. Woh kitab likhe wahan, humein apni history-sheet ki wajah se jana pada tha</em>&nbsp;(I have also stayed in Naini jail, like Nehru. There, he penned books and I went because of my history-sheet).”</p>

<p>By this point of time, Ahmed had amassed significant crime credit. However, it was the killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal that would eventually lead to his downfall and his murder which was broadcast&nbsp;live on primetime TV.&nbsp;</p>

Atiq Ahmed's autopsy report reveals he was shot eight times

The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is on high-alert after convicted gangster Atiq Ahmed along with his brother Ashraf were dramatically shot dead by assailants in the city of Prayagraj on Saturday evening. Section 144 remains in place over the state of Uttar Pradesh after the shootout.

Atiq Ahmed killing: Indian gangster shot dead, all three attackers in custody

<p>The three assailants who shot dead gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf from point-blank range in a daring murder in full public view, amid heavy police presence and TV camera crews all around in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj city have been identified, and have turned out to be petty criminals in police questioning so far, though further investigations are still on.</p>

<p>The three accused have been identified as&nbsp;Lavlesh Tiwari (22), a resident of Banda, Mohit alias Sunny Singh (23) of Hamirpur and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj.</p>

<p>The three were apprehended seconds after shooting dead the dreaded gangsters at point-blank range in full camera view as they threw their firearms on the ground and raised up their hands to surrender. The whole incident was caught live on camera, and its videos —&nbsp; some very chilling ones — spread like wildfire on social media.</p>

<p>During the cross-firing&nbsp;as the three assailants opened fire from different directions, Tiwari and a police constable Maan Singh suffered bullet injuries.</p>

<p>According to police, the three executed their plan by posing themselves as media persons, carrying a camera and mic. It ensured them easy access to Atiq and Ashraf while they were being escorted for medical examination.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After questioning Tewari, Sunny and Maurya, police said that the three assailants claimed that they&nbsp;decided to execute the murder brazenly&nbsp;in public to get fame and wanted to leave their mark in the world of crime.</p>

<p>The names of at least two of them already figure in the crime records of police stations in the state of Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>A resident of Banda, who did not share his name, told media that Tiwari was a “drug addict”, had gone rogue, and was unlike the members of his family.</p>

<p>“His family have&nbsp;been our neighbours. The family is simple. Two of his brothers are priests while one is still studying. Lavlesh has been into crime and has been to jail several times. He has also gone to jail in an eve-teasing case earlier,” he said, reports PTI news agency.</p>

The three assailants who shot dead gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf from point-blank range in a daring murder in full public view, amid heavy police presence and TV camera crews all around in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj city have been identified, and have turned out to be petty criminals in police questioning so far, though further investigations are still on.

The three accused have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari (22), a resident of Banda, Mohit alias Sunny Singh (23) of Hamirpur and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj. The three were apprehended seconds after shooting dead the dreaded gangsters at point-blank range in full camera view as they threw their firearms on the ground and raised up their hands to surrender. The whole incident was caught live on camera, and its videos — some very chilling ones — spread like wildfire on social media. During the cross-firing as the three assailants opened fire from different directions, Tiwari and a police constable Maan Singh suffered bullet injuries. According to police, the three executed their plan by posing themselves as media persons, carrying a camera and mic. It ensured them easy access to Atiq and Ashraf while they were being escorted for medical examination. After questioning Tewari, Sunny and Maurya, police said that the three assailants claimed that they decided to execute the murder brazenly in public to get fame and wanted to leave their mark in the world of crime. The names of at least two of them already figure in the crime records of police stations in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother shot dead by assailants in Prayagraj, UP Lavlesh Tiwari A resident of Banda, who did not share his name, told media that Tiwari was a “drug addict”, had gone rogue, and was unlike the members of his family. “His family have been our neighbours. The family is simple. Two of his brothers are priests while one is still studying. Lavlesh has been into crime and has been to jail several times. He has also gone to jail in an eve-teasing case earlier,” he said, reports PTI news agency. #WATCH | Prayagraj: Forensic team at the spot where Mafia-turned-politician #AtiqAhmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while interacting with media.#UttarPradesh pic.twitter.com/vlLwFAD6Qi — ANI (@ANI) April 15, 2023 × “He had the ambition to earn a big name in the world of crime,” the person claimed. On his Facebook profile, Lavlesh Tiwari claims to be a member of Bajrang Dal, a Hindu nationalist organisation. Mohit alias Sunny Sunny, too, is a criminal known for indulging in petty thefts and assault. A neighbour in Hamirpur said Mohit had left his home more than 10 years ago. There are 17 criminal cases registered against him in the district. “He was a resident of Kurara, and was normal when he was young. He went to jail after a brawl, after which his mentality changed and he entered the world of crime. After a few incidents, he left Kurara. He was in Hamirpur jail for about a year," he said. India: Gangster Atiq Ahmed’s son killed in ‘encounter’ by Uttar Pradesh Police

<p>Ruturaj Gaikwad has done the unthinkable! On Monday (November 28), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener flexed his muscles and smashed as many as seven sixes in a single over and returned with a majestic 220 not out, off 159 balls, in Maharashtra's quarter-final tie versus Uttar Pradesh in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 edition. Gaikwad went bonkers in the 49th over and hit seven sixes, including a six off a no-ball, to take his side to a mammoth 330 for 5 in 50 overs.&nbsp; It is to be noted that he has now become the first-ever&nbsp;batter, across all professional formats, to hit seven sixes in an over.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a horrific case of sheer negligence, young kabaddi players were served food kept in a toilet during a state-level U-16 tournament in India's Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp; The issue came to light after a video went viral on social media where players can be seen taking food from trays kept on a toilet floor at the Dr B R Ambedkar stadium in Saharanpur.</p>

<p>As per reports, the incident took place on September 16 when hundreds of junior kabaddi players arrived at the stadium for the sub-junior championship. The arrangements for the players' stay and their food were made at the stadium. However, the players complained of unhygienic and sub-standard meals.</p>

<p>In the video which has gone viral, players can be seen taking rice and puris (Indian fried flat bread) from utensils kept inside a toilet. <p>A major blast at a chemical factory in northern Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur claimed 12 lives and injured 20 after a boiler exploded. The officials have found traces of gunpowder and suspect that it may have caused the explosion.</p>

<p>The incident took place at an industrial facility in Dhaulana, around 60 kilometres from the capital New Delhi, on Saturday around 3 pm. There were around 30 people in the affected area.</p>

<p>Residents of Dhaulana said that the blast was so intense that they felt “earthquake-like tremors”. Some of the factories located in the vicinity were damaged. It took three hours for fire tenders to douse the blaze.</p>

<p>Superintendent of Police of Hapur Deepak Bhuker said a probe has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.</p>

<p>"The factory was given the licence to manufacture electronic items. And now, it is a matter of probe what exactly was going on here. This is a sad incident. Forensic teams have reached here and are collecting samples," District Magistrate of Hapur Medha Roopam was quoted as saying by PTI news agency.</p>

<p>"Our efforts are to ensure that the injured persons get the best medical treatment. Some of them have been referred to Safdarjung Hospital," she added.</p>

<p>Other factories in the area will be inspected, the district magistrate said, adding that action would also be taken against officials concerned if it was found in the probe that the incident took place due to their laxity.</p>

<p>The factory is located adjacent to a CNG pump. Rescue and relief measures were taken up at the site, according to officials.</p>

A major blast at a chemical factory in northern Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur claimed 12 lives and injured 20 after a boiler exploded. The officials have found traces of gunpowder and suspect that it may have caused the explosion. The incident took place at an industrial facility in Dhaulana, around 60 kilometres from the capital New Delhi, on Saturday around 3 pm. There were around 30 people in the affected area. Residents of Dhaulana said that the blast was so intense that they felt “earthquake-like tremors”. Some of the factories located in the vicinity were damaged. It took three hours for fire tenders to douse the blaze. Superintendent of Police of Hapur Deepak Bhuker said a probe has been launched to determine the cause of the incident. "The factory was given the licence to manufacture electronic items. And now, it is a matter of probe what exactly was going on here. This is a sad incident. Forensic teams have reached here and are collecting samples," District Magistrate of Hapur Medha Roopam was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. "Our efforts are to ensure that the injured persons get the best medical treatment. Some of them have been referred to Safdarjung Hospital," she added. Other factories in the area will be inspected, the district magistrate said, adding that action would also be taken against officials concerned if it was found in the probe that the incident took place due to their laxity. The factory is located adjacent to a CNG pump. Rescue and relief measures were taken up at the site, according to officials.
