As many as five members of a family died due to a suspected case of asphyxiation in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday (Jan 9) night. The incident took place in Allipur Bhud village of Amroha district after smoke emitting from an ‘angeethi’ or coal brazier, suffocated the family members while they were sleeping.

According to police reports, the seven people did not exit the house after Monday night, leading to suspicion amongst the villagers. Around Tuesday evening, the villagers took matters into their own hands and broke open the door, only to find the seven family members lying unconscious.

While five succumbed to the smoke, two others were rushed to the hospital.

"Prima facie the cause of death could be due to lack of oxygen because these people had burnt a coal brazier in their room," the police said.

Reports indicate that the house belonged to one Raheezuddin whose three children and two children of his relatives died in the accident. They have been identified as Sonam (19), Waris (17), Mehak (16), Zaid (15), and Mahir (12). Adverse weather conditions are gripping the capital city of india, Delhi, and its surrounding areas. This as a thick blanket of fog enveloped the city, causing visibility to plummet to nearly zero. The relentless cold wave continued to persist as the minimum temperature in the national capital region dropped to 7 degrees Celsius.
In a recent study conducted by researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur, five Indian states - Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat - were identified as the major contributors to the country's dust emissions.

These states were reported to have high levels of dust particles in the air because of factors like road dust, construction sites and high traffic volume. The study emphasised the need for effective mitigation measures.

In the study conducted by researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur, it was indicated that five states made a contribution to 60 per cent of total dust emission in the country in terms of both particulate matter (PM) 10 and 2.5.

A “comprehensive particulate matter road dust emission inventory” for 2022 was prepared by the study in which they used the vehicle registration data which was used from 1,352 RTOs in India. “Specific states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat emerged as the predominant contributors to road dust emissions. These states not only exhibit elevated silt loading (sL) values but also account for a substantial proportion of the total registered vehicles in India, thereby underscoring the pressing imperative for effective mitigation measures,” stated the study, further reflecting that these states also accounted for nearly 43 per cent of the total registered vehicles in India.

"While some had come for issues due to emissions from construction sites, others were living near the roads with high traffic volume and high concentration of dust particles in the air," said Dr Raval.
"The primary sign of dust-related irritation is non-obstructive chronic bronchitis where the patients get a bad dry cough which is not caused by any infection,” he added.

As many as 14 children reportedly got infected with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV after undergoing blood transfusion in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, these kids have thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that results in abnormal haemoglobin levels.

The report, citing doctors, stated on Monday (Oct 23) that the children could have been infected with various diseases while receiving transfusions at private and district hospitals, and in some cases locally, during urgent cases.

The infections were revealed during a test conducted at Kanpur’s government-run Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. Currently, 180 thalassemia patients receive blood transfusion at the centre, which screens each of them every six months for any viral diseases.

Kids at major risk

Speaking to Hindustan Times newspaper, Arun Arya, the head of the paediatrics department at the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur, said that seven of these children tested positive for Hepatitis B, five for Hepatitis C and two for HIV. The infected children are aged between 6 and 16.

While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the infection, Arya said that the blood transfusion may have taken place during the so-called “window period”.

According to him, when someone donates blood, it is tested to make sure it is safe for transfusion. However, there is a period of time after someone was infected when the virus could not be detected by the tests, this time span is called “window period”.

This means that during the window period, someone can be very infectious but still test negative for HIV or Hepatitis. Different types of tests have different window periods.
