NASA's unmanned Moon mission Artemis-1 has once again been delayed due to a hurricane, days after returning to the launch pad after undergoing repairs. NASA in a statement released said it was postponing the November 8 launch until November 16 due to tropical storm 'Nicole' which is expected to make landfall on the Florida coast as a 'Category 1' hurricane. "Based on expected weather conditions and options to roll back ahead of the storm, the agency determined Sunday evening the safest option for the launch hardware was to keep the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft secured at the pad," said the agency. It added that the engineering team had powered down the Orion spacecraft, SLS core stage, interim cryogenic propulsion stage, and boosters to prepare for the impending storm. The next window opens at 6:04 AM on November 16 and will be available for two hours. To err on the side of caution, the agency has also kept November 19 as the next date for the launch. Read more: NASA Moon rocket launch delayed again, this time by storm Already delayed by several years, NASA's Artemis mission is proving a tough challenge for the premier space agency. The agency had its first attempt at the launch on August 29. However, some engineering problems and hazardous leaks meant that the launch was cancelled. Since then, NASA, on multiple occasions has prepared for a lift-off but to no avail. WATCH | WION Dispatch: Artemis I launch attempt scrubbed, called off due to technical issues × As reported by WION extensively, the Artemis programme is NASA's successor to the Apollo lunar missions from fifty years ago. The only spaceflights to date to land humans on the moon's surface involved six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, during which twelve men made moonwalks. The SLS is the largest new vertical launch system NASA has created since the Saturn V rockets used in the 1960s and 1970s. Read more: NASA postpones Artemis I mission launch again as bid to plug hazardous leak fails However, the SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

NASA's Artemis lunar mission delayed yet again. Here's why.

As proud proclamations of the US’s $450 million aid package to Pakistan do the rounds, India appears less than elated. A shrill silence envelops the matter, and for good reason. The aid is supposed to help in the ‘sustainment’ of Islamabad’s F-16 fighter jets, as claimed by the Pentagon. But the bald eagle isn’t really bald, is it? Unfortunately for the US, India isn’t too thrilled to see its nemesis stocked and sailing.

History is unequivocal in support of India’s displeasure. Pakistan and India are known to share murky relations, fuelled by various territorial disputes, ideological differences, and not to forget, ample shreds of evidence revealing Pakistan’s militant operations within Indian territory. However, contrary to minimal expectations of sanity, but with all pomp and circumstance, the US has regularly replenished Pakistan’s begging bowl with hefty alms; some odd 85 F-16 aircraft. The sole motivation for this act of generosity stems from US’s attempt to enable Pakistan to wipe out terrorism that thrives on Pakistani soil. Or so the US claims. You see, the US views every relationship as transactional. This could be the US’s way of repaying Pakistan for the supposed help in killing Ayman al-Zawahiri, the former Al-Qaeda chief, late in August.

According to reports, Pakistan had provided information on his residential location in Kabul, and according to a basic geographical sense, the US drones could only have been launched from a Pakistani military base. This unusually kind disposition of Pakistan was, in turn, a product of Biden’s help with a desperately required IMF bailout for a cash-strapped, nay, maimed Pakistan economy. From what can be gathered, Biden also wishes to exploit Pakistan’s stronghold in intelligence accumulation inside Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The cherry on the cake, the Taliban definitely likes Pakistan better than the US. A tough call, I’m sure.

Another motivation for the US to help our damsel in distress can be traced to its hegemonic aspirations. While the USA can easily bully Latin American and smaller European nations, it finds its influence slipping in Asia. So, who is the US losing to? He who cannot be tamed. Or at least not by the US. That’s right, Xi Jinping. With China’s growing domination in Asia, the US feels threatened. Humiliated even. And with China’s increasing closeness to Russia and North Korea, it can easily lead Asia, and subsequently the world. This is where Pakistan, US’s Frankenstein monster comes in.

It is a politically unstable country, currently simmered in an economic crisis. Tale as old as time. Its energies are occupied with framing the deadly ‘terrorist’ Imran Khan and ticking tea off the nation’s diet. The US is pouncing on this very vulnerable situation in Pakistan and establishing a presence. Moreover, by helping Pakistan militarily, it hopes to isolate China in the face of the growing proximity between China and Pakistan. To the US’s advantage, Pakistan is one of the few non-aligned Asian nations that doesn’t always not-align. Moreover, little rocket man’s tendency to develop, well rockets, irks China. And Russia focused on its war in Ukraine currently, will soon have to deal with the remnants of its aggression in the form of lasting foreign criticism and potentially crippling Western sanctions. It simply cannot be an ally to China in the near future. So, if the US can steal China’s new toy, it can alienate the malady in red and establish a stronghold over Asia. Checkmate!

India has been silent on the matter so far. At least publicly. Does it have reason to be worried? Yes. Pakistan has been accused of using its F-16s against India in the dogfight that the two nations engaged in after the Balakot strike. And India has reason to believe that these F-16s will continue to be used against India, as opposed to expectations that Pakistan might actually use these to terminate militancy. To India’s relief, the rusted F-16s were withering away due to a lack of maintenance, rendering them incapable of flight. And Trump, despite being the ‘Mentally deranged US dotard’ had brains enough to not re-equip unscrupulous Pakistan. But now, Biden has decided to give flight to Pakistan’s terror. Quite literally. And to appease India amidst increasing discontent, the Biden administration seems to think that vilifying China will do just the trick. So, the US publicly denounces China’s efforts to disengage at PP-15 as insufficient and promises India support against the ‘terrible threat’ from Beijing. Well, Beijing, if the shoe fits!

A US Court has denied former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes' request for a new trial, a little more than a month after she submitted the petition. US District Judge Edward Davila, overseeing the case said Holmes' side did not produce enough material evidence to prove government misconduct in the case. As a result, the case was not deemed worthy of a new trial. As reported by WION, Adam Rosendorff, former lab director at Theranos appeared at Holmes' home in August and apologised for his role in the entire incident. Consequently, together with some new evidence and Rosendorff's apology, Holmes approached the court and requested a hearing to assess her new trial request. Elizabeth Holmes was the founder and CEO of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company that soared in valuation after the company falsely claimed to have revolutionised blood testing by developing testing methods that could use surprisingly small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick. North Korea on Saturday (October 5) fired four short-range ballistic missiles into the western sea, according to South Korean military. The launch came close on the heels of a six-day military exercise between the US and South Korea.

North Korea has launched a series of missiles this week, including a possible failed intercontinental ballistic missile, drawing condemnation from the United States, South Korea and Japan, and raising speculation it could be preparing to resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time since 2017.

Launches that took place on Saturday took place between 11:31 and 11:59 am (0231-0259 GMT). The missiles flew about 130 km (80 miles), reaching an altitude of about 20 km (10 miles), Seoul said.

The allied exercise 'Vigilant Storm' involved some 240 military aircraft and two US B-1B strategic bombers, as well as four F-16 and four F-35A fighters, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

This military exercise saw for the first time the strategic B-1B bomber plane being deployed in US-South Korea drills since 2017.

Pyongyang on Friday demanded the United States and South Korea halt "provocative" air exercises. Earlier, South Korea said it scrambled warplanes in response to 180 North Korean military flights near the countries' shared border on Friday.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) earlier this week expressed sharp disapproval of the United State's economic embargo on the communist-ruled state of Cuba. As many as 185 countries voted in favour of a resolution that condemned the embargo while the US and its ally Israel voted against it. Brazil and Ukraine abstained from voting. Notably, this was the 30th time that the UN had rebuked the US policy of imposing crippling economic sanctions. However, taking a politically correct line on the resolution which is non-binding in nature, US Political Coordinator John Kelley told the assembly: “The United States opposes this resolution, but we stand with the Cuban people and will continue to seek ways to provide meaningful support to them.” Read more: US sanctions Cuba for repressing protests However, Havana was not much pleased with Washington's superficial sincerity. US President Joe Biden on Friday said his government was going to shut down all coal plants across America. Reportedly, Biden gave the rather bold call in his speech at an event in California while addressing a gathering. President Biden said that coal plants are too expensive to operate, and hence "we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America" in order to shift to wind power.

"I was in Massachusetts about a month ago on the site of the largest old coal plant in America. Guess what? It cost them too much money. They can't count. No one is building new coal plants because they can’t rely on it. Even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of the existence of the plant," said Biden.

The Democrat leader added that his government was going to focus on wind and solar energy which will be using the same infrastructure set up as the one used for the coal-fired electricity transmission.

"So it's going to become a wind generation. And all they're doing is it’s going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power."

And all they're doing is it’s going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power." A US B-1B strategic bomber will participate in the ongoing joint air drills with South Korea on Saturday, a defence ministry official in Seoul told AFP, a show of force after a blitz of missile launches by North Korea.

Pyongyang's flurry of launches on Wednesday and Thursday included an intercontinental ballistic missile and one that landed near South Korea's territorial waters for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

The United States and South Korea have warned that the series of launches could culminate in a nuclear test by North Korea, and extended their largest-ever air force drills to Saturday in response.

A South Korean defence ministry official told AFP that a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber would participate on the last day of the exercises, dubbed Vigilant Storm, which were originally scheduled from Monday to Friday this week.

"B-1B is scheduled to participate in the afternoon training," the official said, without providing further details.

The show of force came a day after South Korea scrambled fighter jets in response to what it said was the mobilisation of 180 North Korean warplanes.

Pyongyang has ramped up its missile launches in protest over the US-South Korea air drills. Such exercises have long infuriated North Korea, which sees them as rehearsals for an invasion.

Pyongyang had called Vigilant Storm "an aggressive and provocative military drill targeting" North Korea, and said the United States and South Korea would "pay the most horrible price in history" if they continued.

North Korea is particularly sensitive about these drills, experts say, as its air force is one of the weakest links in its military, lacking high-tech jets and properly trained pilots.

Pyongyang has been particularly angered in the past by the deployment of US strategic weapons such as B-1Bs and aircraft carrier strike groups, which have been deployed to and near the Korean peninsula in times of high tension.

While the B-1B no longer carries nuclear weapons, it is described by the US Air Force as "the backbone of America's long-range bomber force" that can strike anywhere in the world.

The United States on Friday assailed China and Russia at the UN Security Council for having "enabled" North Korea.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield dismissed criticism of the drills with South Korea as North Korean "propaganda" and said they posed no threat to other countries.

A former US military pilot is awaiting a court hearing and possible extradition after being caught by the authorities in Australia for having the same address as a Chinese hacker.

A former US military pilot is awaiting a court hearing and possible extradition after being caught by the authorities in Australia for having the same address as a Chinese hacker. Reportedly, Daniel Edmund Duggan, 54, was arrested by Australian Federal Police last month on a request from the US. According to the authorities, Duggan listed the same Beijing address as a Chinese businessman jailed in the US for conspiring to hack US defence contractors' computers. Australian records reveal that Duggan moved to Beijing from New South Wales in 2014 and listed a flat in upmarket Chaoyang District as his place of address. However, the same address was found to be belonging to a Chinese national named Su Bin. WATCH | Pilots hired to help China understand how western planes operate × According to US court records, Su was arrested in Canada in 2014 and jailed in the US two years later in connection to a case involving the theft of US military aircraft designs. Su had pleaded guilty in the case. Su's aviation company Nuodian Technology is on the UN Entity List which is a trade blacklist of companies or individuals that pose threat to US national security. Duggan's arrest took place the same day when it was revealed that former British and Australian pilots were being poached by the Chinese military to train its troops. At the time, Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said he ordered the department to investigate claims that ex-Australian military pilots were recruited by the flight school, based in South Africa to work in China. Read more: After UK, Australia to also investigate reports that China hired its ex-military pilots "I would be deeply shocked and disturbed to hear that there were personnel who were being lured by a pay check from a foreign state above serving their own country. An 'extremely rare' first edition copy of the US Constitution, one of the most historic pieces of publication in US history, will go under the hammer later this year.

Reportedly, the printed copy, one of the only two available in private hands will be auctioned by Sotheby's New York on December 13. According to the auction house, the copy is expected to fetch as much as anything between $20 million to $30 million.

This particular copy hasn't been seen at an auction for over 125 year and thus it is being described as 'extremely rare' by Sotheby's. The last time it came out in public light was 35 years ago at a Stanford University exhibition.

The US Supreme Court and its Conversative heavy bench of judges on Monday signalled that it may not be in favour of universities enrolling students based on their skin colour.

Reportedly, the 6-3 conservative majority court was hearing a case filed by activist Edward Blum challenging the lower court ruling of upholding race-conscious admission policies of Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.

Justice Samuel Alito, during the five-hour hearing, said giving an advantage to a student based on race put the other student at disadvantage.

"So what is your response to the simple argument that college admissions are a zero-sum game? And if you give a 'plus' to a person who falls within the category of under-represented minority, but not to somebody else, you're disadvantaging the latter student?"

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was added to the bench during Trump's rule said "these racial classifications are potentially dangerous and must have a logical end point."

Notably, Harvard and UNC, USA's oldest private and public universities, respectively employ race as a criterion to try to ensure that minorities, particularly African Americans, are represented in the student body.

However, during the hearing, the two universities argued that race was only one criterion amongst other parameters such as academic merit, athletics and extracurricular.

Given the statement by the judges, it looks highly probable that the SC may strike down affirmative action. After invalidating the famous "Roe v. Wade" ruling from 1973 that protected a woman's right to an abortion, this ruling could potentially generate a similar discourse.

Affirmative action is prohibited at public institutions in nine states, including California, where voters rejected a 2020 attempt to reinstate the practice after doing so in a ballot measure in 1996.

Justice Samuel Alito, during the five-hour hearing, said giving an advantage to a student based on race put the other student at disadvantage. "So what is your response to the simple argument that college admissions are a zero-sum game? And if you give a 'plus' to a person who falls within the category of under-represented minority, but not to somebody else, you're disadvantaging the latter student?" WATCH | Gravitas: Why has US failed to fight racism? × Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas, one of the two Black justices said she didn't even understand the word diversity. "I've heard the word 'diversity' quite a few times and I don't have a clue what it means. I don't put much stock in that because I've heard similar arguments in favor of segregation, too," said Thomas. Read more: US Supreme Court to decide on race-based admissions in top universities Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was added to the bench during Trump's rule said "these racial classifications are potentially dangerous and must have a logical end point." Notably, Harvard and UNC, USA's oldest private and public universities, respectively employ race as a criterion to try to ensure that minorities, particularly African Americans, are represented in the student body. It is not every day that Barack Obama gets heckled during a public meeting, but this is exactly what happened during a recent event in Michigan. The former United States President was giving a speech during a Democratic campaign rally when he was interrupted by a protestor.

Obama was talking about the changing situation in US politics and said that there were certain politicians at the moment who are trying to create division by pushing a “rhetoric”.

“If our rhetoric about each other gets that mean, when we don’t just disagree with people, but we start demonizing, making wild, crazy allegations about them, that creates a dangerous climate.”

“If elected officials don’t do more to explicitly reject that kind of rhetoric, if they tacitly support it or encourage their supporters to stand up outside voting places armed with guns and dressed in tactical gear, more people can get hurt,” Obama said according to Reuters.

“Sometimes it can turn dangerous,” he concluded.

During this point of the speech, a man from the crowd shouted “Mr President” at Obama. While the unidentified man was escorted out of the venue, Obama responded to the interruption.

“Sir, this is what I mean,” the former president responded.

In what bears an eerie similarity to the January 6 US Capitol riots, an Associated Press report has claimed that David Depape, the man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, carried zip ties with him. The report stated that during the Capitol Hill riots, the protesters could be heard looking for Pelosi by shouting 'Where's Nancy?' and carrying zip ties. A person associated with the investigation gave the details about the zip tie connection on the condition of anonymity. According to media reports, Depape before attacking Paul Pelosi also shouted, "Where is Nancy?", whilst carrying the zip-tie. The attacker's background also gives credence to the report. Depape is a self-described nudist activist who lives in the Bay Area and is a proponent of far-right conspiracy theories. WATCH | US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband assaulted with hammer × Depape has been arrested by the police and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, battery, burglary, and several other felonies. However, so far, no information regarding his motive has been communicated to the media or the public. On Friday, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said that police detective, assisted by FBI agents, are yet to determine what caused the home invasion but added, "We know this was not a random act” and that it was targeted and "wrong." "The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it," San Francisco police chief Bill Scott told reporters. He later added that Paul Pelosi was hit at least once. As reported by WION, Nancy was in Washington DC at the time of the attack. After being informed of the intrusion, she rushed to the San Francisco hospital where Paul, 82, "underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands," according to Nancy's office. He is expected to make a full recovery. The mainstream media in the US was taken for a spin by a couple of pranksters on Friday, following the news of the formal takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk.

Reportedly, hours after the news, CNBC's Deirdre Bosa interviewed two individuals, referred to as Twitter's employees by the TV channel outside the company's headquarters in San Francisco.

The two were carrying cardboard boxes which suggested they were fired from the job. Bosa approached them and carried the news that Musk had begun firing Twitter employees, en masse.

“It’s happening. Entire team of data engineers let go. These are two of them," tweeted Bosa alongside the picture of the two pranksters. "They are visibly shaken. Maurice Hastings, 69, a man wronged by the judicial system has finally been given his due. Reportedly, Hastings has been released from a California prison after having spent 38 years for a 1983 murder and two attempted murders, which, he, in fact, never committed. The Los Angeles county district attorney (DA) on Friday said Hastings was released after long-untested DNA evidence pointed to a different individual who might have committed the crime. Read more: US man wrongly serves 20 years in prison, released after twin brother's confession Speaking about the freedom that came his way after years of endless wait, Hastings said he wasn't bitter. "I prayed for many years that this day would come. I am not pointing fingers. I am not standing up here a bitter man, but I just want to enjoy my life now while I have it," Hastings told media at a news conference. Meanwhile, LA district attorney George Gascón said what happened to Hastings' was a terrible injustice. “What has happened to Mr Hastings is a terrible injustice. The justice system is not perfect, and when we learn of new evidence which causes us to lose confidence in a conviction, it is our obligation to act swiftly.” Hastings was wrongfully convicted in the murder of Roberta Wydermyer who was sexually assaulted and killed with a gunshot to the head. Hastings was later charged with special-circumstance murder and a death penalty was sought by the DA's office. While the first jury couldn't reach a consensus, the second jury convicted him and the court sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Hastings maintained his innocence all throughout the court proceedings but to no avail. In 2000, he requested DNA testing of the material that was gathered by the coroner of the body of Wydermyer which included swabbing of various body parts and an oral swab that detected semen. The DA, however, refused his request. It was only last year that DA’s Conviction Integrity Unit tested the material and found that the semen was not Hastings'. While Hastings simply wants to get on with his life, others, similarly wrongfully impacted by the broken judicial system are not being too kind. After repeated denial by Russia and Iran regarding the supply of arms, Israel President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday said his country had shared 'intelligence' with the US to prove the deals had indeed taken place.

After repeated denial by Russia and Iran regarding the supply of arms, Israel President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday said his country had shared 'intelligence' with the US to prove the deals had indeed taken place. Herzog said Iran supplied drones that Russia has used in recent times to create havoc in Ukraine. The Israeli president made the statement during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Washington. According to Herzog's office, Israel shared images assessed that show similarity between the drones downed in Ukraine and parts tested by Iran in December last year. It added that both images have similarities to the drones displayed at an exposition in Iran in 2014. Read more: Why is West bothered about Iran sending drones to Russia? "Iranian weapons play a key role in destabilizing our world, and the international community must learn its lessons, now and in the future," said Herzog. He added that the "world must speak with Iran in the same language. A tough, united and uncompromising language." The eight-month-long war has depleted Russia's weapon arsenal. It is now looking for alternatives to have them filled. After Ukraine regained significant ground by pushing Russian troops, forcing Putin to call for partial mobilisation, Moscow closed the gap by bombarding Ukrainian cities and towns with deadly Iranian drones, according to news reports. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russia had ordered around 2,000 drones from Iran. "The disgusting sound of Iranian drones is heard in our skies every night. Russia ordered about 2,000 'Shaheds' from Iran," said Zelensky Read more: Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky claims Moscow ordered some 2,000 drones from Iran Moreover, Iran is expected to deliver short-range ballistic missiles viz. Fateh-110 and its advanced version such as Zolfaghar to Kremlin, per a report by the Washington Post. However, Iran has rejected the claims saying it is not sending any weapons. "We believe that the arming of each side of the crisis will prolong the war. We have not considered and do not consider war to be the right path either in Ukraine or in Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen," said Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian foreign minister. On the other hand, Kremlin said that it had no knowledge of its army using such weapons and Moscow accused the West of seeking to put "pressure" on Tehran with the allegations. A new survey by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has shown that American students and their learning capabilities took a big hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new survey by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has shown that American students and their learning capabilities took a big hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reportedly, students saw a big decline in their reading and mathematics scores. NAEP said reading scores had dropped to 1992 levels while four in 10 eighth-grade students failed to have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts. 38 per cent of students scored 'below basic' scores in mathematics which was significantly worse than the 2019 figures when it stood at 31 per cent. In the state of Cleveland, the drop was the steepest as fourth-grade reading saw a decline of 16 points. Moreover, not a single state saw any major improvement in the average test scores of the students. According to NAEP. the survey was conducted on hundreds of thousands of fourth and eight graders and showed that decades of academic growth were erased and racial disparities widened. After turning into a category 4 storm on Saturday, Hurricane Roslyn on Sunday made landfall along Mexico's Pacific coast and left a trail of destruction. Reportedly, two people died on Sunday from the havoc caused by Roslyn as wind speed peaked at around 210 kmph. A 74-year-old man died after a beam fell on his head while a 39-year-old woman succumbed to injuries after a fence collapsed on her in the Rosamorada district. According to a Reuters report, Roslyn caused major damage to roofs and outdoor coverings. The state agencies informed that heavy rainfall is expected to continue and if people and authorities did not practice caution, it could lead to flash flooding and landslides in some regions. However, after the storm weakened with speeds ranging from 90 kmph to 31 kmph, it moved inland, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Read more: Hurricane Roslyn strengthens to Category 4, Mexico braces for landfall over the weekend NHC added that before reaching Texas, the hurricane may develop into a tropical depression. While the hurricane did not make a direct impact near Puerto Vallarta, it did manage to bring torrential rain and big waves, destroying the beachfront of several resorts. However, the busy Puerto Vallarta airport resumed operations on the same day. “The biggest effect was from the waves, on some of the beachside infrastructure. We did not have any significant damage," said Adrián Bobadilla, director, state civil defence agency. The beaches remained closed as NHC warned that the swells were "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions." Prior to the landfall on Saturday, warnings were issued for Mexican states including Las Islas Marias, Jalisco and Nayarit, particularly the coastal regions. The states were advised that preparations “should be rushed to completion” to protect life and property. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

A few days after a study showed that chemical hair-straightening tools caused a rare type of cancer, a US woman has brought a lawsuit against L'Oreal, a French cosmetic giant for having contracted uterine cancer.

A few days after a study showed that chemical hair-straightening tools caused a rare type of cancer, a US woman has brought a lawsuit against L'Oreal, a French cosmetic giant for having contracted uterine cancer. Reportedly, Jenny Mitchell filed a civil lawsuit saying she had been using L'Oreal's chemical hair straightening products for more than two decades which caused uterine cancer and forced her to undergo a full hysterectomy. Under a hysterectomy, a woman's womb (uterus) is removed which means they cannot get pregnant after the operation. Ben Crump, an attorney representing Mitchell said his client sought damages from the French company, among others. Crump also added that Black women were particularly made the target of such dangerous products. "Black women have long been the victims of dangerous products specifically marketed to them," said Crump. "We will likely discover that Ms Mitchell's tragic case is one of countless cases in which companies aggressively misled Black women to increase their profits." Earlier, Black women across the US had also blamed Johnson & Johnson for selling talc-based powder that contained cancer-causing material like asbestos and was particularly marketed towards the dark-skinned demography of consumers. Read more: Johnson & Johnson to stop selling its talc-based baby powder globally in 2023 as lawsuits mount As reported by WION, in a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, it was shown that women who use chemical hair-straightening tools frequently are at a greater risk of a comparatively rare type of cancer. The study incorporated data from almost 34,000 women in the United States over a period of around 11 years (10.9 to be exact). Participants were aged between 35 to 74 years. "We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent," said Alexandra White of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) and the lead author of the study. Read more: Hair straightening can lead to a threefold increase in the risk of this 'rare' type of cancer She added that it is important to put this information into context given that "Uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer." The study did not find any racial linkages, but due to the fact that black women are more frequent users of these products and tend to start using them at a younger age, the researchers stress the importance the findings could have for them. "We encourage eligible borrowers to join the nearly 22 million Americans whose information the Department of Education already has," said Jean-Pierre. "It is important to note that the order does not reverse the trial court's dismissal of the case or suggest that the case has merit," she added. "It merely prevents debt from being discharged until the (appeals) court makes a decision." Unveiled in August, the programme will provide a $10,000 relief for borrowers with salaries less than $125,000. For recipients of Pell Grants, the relief doubles to $20,000. As per news reports, the plan is going to cost the government an estimated $400 billion. Fitch Ratings on Tuesday presented another gloomy report by suggesting that the US economy may witness a 1990-style mild recession, starting spring next year. A combination of stubborn inflation and the US Central Bank's three consecutive interest rate hikes will lead to such a recession, explained the credit rating agency. The report added that the US GDP may grow at a snail's pace of 0.5 per cent which was an entire percentage point down from the June prediction. However, in an attempt to cushion its rather gloomy analysis, the agency said that the US economy will be entering this phase from a 'position of strength' as the consumers are not saddled with debt, like 'The Great Recession of 2008'. “US household finances are much stronger now than in 2008, the banking system is healthier and there is little evidence of overbuilding in the housing market,” it said. “Fitch Ratings expects a very strong consumer balance sheet and the strongest labour market in decades to cushion the impact of a likely recession." WATCH | Fitch: Inflation and fed hikes to drive US economy into recession × The forecast made by the agency may be in line with the recent performance of the US economy. For two consecutive quarters, the US economy has shrunk, meaning, it has technically entered a recession. While the US remains down, the rest of the world is not faring much better either. As reported by WION, last month, the same agency lowered the GDP forecasts for all the major economies citing high inflation, the European gas crisis, and a sharp acceleration in the pace of global monetary policy tightening.
