US stock indexes closed sharply lower on Thursday (December 15), with each of the major averages suffering their biggest daily percentage drop in weeks, as fears intensified that the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation using aggressive interest rate hikes could lead to a recession.

The US central bank hiked rates by 50 basis points (bps) on Wednesday as was widely expected, downsizing from the consecutive 75 bps hikes at its prior four meetings, but Fed Chair Jerome Powell warned recent signs of inflation were not enough to convince Fed the battle against rising prices had been won.

“The investors were hoping that the Fed would hint that they will finish their rate tightening program by the first quarter of 2023 and begin a rate reduction program by the end of the year,”said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

“It (the Fed) delayed when they are likely to start cutting interest rates until 2024. So I think that's what's causing investors to say time to get defensive once again because a recession is likely around the corner.”

US: President Biden signs same-sex marriage protections bill into law

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday (December 8) that a recession in US was 'not inevitable', adding that the economy was on the right track in lowering inflation. Yellen spoke with reporters during her visit to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's currency facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

On "whether or not we can avoid a recession, I believe the answer is yes," she told reporters.

Yellen's comments came on the heels of a forceful campaign by the US central bank to cool demand this year, walking a tightrope between lowering consumer costs while trying not to tip the economy into a downturn.

Meanwhile, a Reuters poll said that the US economy is heading into a short and shallow recession over the coming year. The economists polled by Reuters unanimously expected the US Federal Reserve to go for a smaller 50 basis point interest rate hike on December 14.

After raising the federal funds rate 75 basis points at each of the previous four meetings, all 84 economists polled from December 2-8 expected the central bank to go for a slightly softer half a percentage point to 4.25 per cent-4.50 per cent this time.

There is still a feeling among economists that the US may experience downturn next year.

Yellen however, said that supply chain bottlenecks had begun to ease and new apartment rents have "essentially peaked," with the labour market cooling slightly as well.

"Without seeing significant net nationwide layoffs, I believe we're on the right track in terms of lowering inflation and a recession's not inevitable," she added.

US slams Russian 'loose talk' on nuclear weapons after Putin remarks

French President Emmanuel Macron, currently on a US visit, criticised subsidies under its Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) as 'super aggressive.' Macron addressed lawmakers from both political parties in the US. Macron, who arrived in the US for a state visit on Tursday (November 29), will also question US President Joe Biden over the subsidies over which the European Union is not very happy. This is Macron's second state visit to US after taking office.

"This is super aggressive for our business people," Macron said as per AFP.

The White House touts the IRA legislation as a groundbreaking effort to reignite US manufacturing and promote renewable technologies, but European Union governments are crying foul, threatening to launch a trade war by subsidising their own green economy sector.

Macron's blunt assessment, saying he just wanted "to be respected as a good friend," tore some of the veneer off a carefully choreographed state visit intended to celebrate historic US-French ties -- and also tackle the trickier parts of the US-EU transatlantic alliance.

"I don't want to become a market to sell American products because I have exactly the same products as you," said Macron, stressing that France had its own middle class in need of employment.

"And the consequence of the IRA is that you will perhaps fix your issue but you will increase my problem. I'm sorry to be so straightforward," he said.

Despite Macron's apparent combative tone, his visit to US is also being seen as an effort to mend ties between the two powers which reached a historic low after US and UK torpedoed a multi-billion dollar deal between France and Australia to strike their own to provide the latter with nuclear submarines.

After Macron's comments, the White House appeared to be in business as usual mode as it underlined that the state visit was about two presidents' "warm relationship."

US advances in the clean energy economy will help Europeans too, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. The IRA "presents significant opportunities for European firms as well as benefits to EU energy security. This is not a zero sum game."

After Macron's comments, the White House appeared to be in business as usual mode as it underlined that the state visit was about two presidents' "warm relationship." US advances in the clean energy economy will help Europeans too, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. The IRA "presents significant opportunities for European firms as well as benefits to EU energy security. This is not a zero sum game." In a speech later at the French embassy, Macron insisted on the subsidies issue and said they could become a real sticking point in US relations with Europe. On a state visit, Macron blasts US law as 'super aggressive' for European businesses

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday (November 30) approved a bill to block a potentially crippling railroad strike. The bill also has provisions for mandatory paid sick leave for rail workers. The bill was approved with 290 votes for and 137 votes against. The House separately voted 221 to 207, to give seven days of paid sick leave to railroad employees.

But it faces an uncertain fate in the Senate. Democrats and some Republicans have expressed outrage over the lack of paid short-term sick leave for railroad workers. It was feared that a rail strike could begin as early as December 9.

Consequently, in 2019, Huawei was put on a trade blacklist; meaning US suppliers were barred from doing business with the Chinese company. Read more: Trump-era sanctions, slowdown mean Huawei loses its employees for the first time since 2008 As for ZTE, the company was banned for seven years after it violated the terms of a settlement deal for illegally shipping goods made with US parts to Iran and North Korea. While Trump's policies did not keep Chinese products out of the US, FCC's decision is expected to impose a blanket ban on the sales. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

FIFA World Cup 2022: Southgate terms the boos as 'external noise' after draw against USA

England's opening-day 6-2 victory against Iran will have given them plenty of motivation, but the USA should be upset that Wales held them to a 1-1 draw. The squad that will advance to the Round of 16 remains to be seen given that qualifying is expected.

England vs USA Head to Head

Although England is the favourite to win the match and move on to the next round, historically, this has not been the case. Although England has an advantage in their head-to-head series with the USA, eight victories in 11 games, the Three Lions have never defeated the Americans in a World Cup encounter. During the final event, the teams faced off twice, with England losing both matches. In the first-ever World Cup match, the USA won 1-0, whereas in the 2010 World Cup, the USA scored thanks to a mistake by Robert Green and earned a point to win the group. The latter resulted in England losing horribly to Germany in the Round of 16, and it is still the only draw between the teams.

England vs USA Group Details

England's World Cup campaign got off to a 6-2 thrashing of Iran as five different goal scorers made the 1966 winners' goals apparent. Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, and Jack Grealish were also among the scorers, while Bukayo Saka finished with a brace. Wales and USA battled to a 1-1 tie, with Gareth Bale's 82nd-minute penalty cancelling out Timothy Weah's first-half goal. On Tuesday, November 29, an all-British match between England and Wales will conclude the group stage for both teams at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan. Iran and the United States will face off against each other in a simultaneous kickoff at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha as both sides compete for an R16 spot.

A month after a US court issued a stay on Joe Biden's ambitious student-loan forgiveness plan, the White House on Tuesday announced it will extend payment pause on federal student loans, up until June next year.

The move is aimed at allowing the court to conduct its hearing in desired time as Biden's forgiveness plan remains blocked.

“We’re extending the payment pause because it would be deeply unfair to ask borrowers to pay a debt that they wouldn’t have to pay, were it not for the baseless lawsuits brought by Republican officials and special interests,” said Miguel Cardona, education secretary in a statement.

Biden also took to Twitter to state that his debt relief plan was legal and that Republicans were the reason it had been embroiled in a legal slugfest.

"I'm confident that our student debt relief plan is legal. But it’s on hold because Republican officials want to block it. That's why @SecCardona is extending the payment pause to no later than June 30, 2023, giving the Supreme Court time to hear the case in its current term," tweeted Biden.

"I'm confident that our student debt relief plan is legal. But it’s on hold because Republican officials want to block it. That's why @SecCardona is extending the payment pause to no later than June 30, 2023, giving the Supreme Court time to hear the case in its current term," tweeted Biden.
Expect a wild two-year ride through legislative gridlock, Republican Party investigations of President Joe Biden, and ugly campaigns for the 2024 presidential elections for which former president Donald Trump announced his candidacy even though his star power is waning.

After results that fell far short of Republican expectations, it is far from certain that Trump will be the nominee of a party he has dominated for six years. Infighting broke out even before he announced his candidacy at an event shunned by senior party establishment figures and even his daughter Ivanka, a close aide and confidante during his four years in power.

Election day was November 8 but because of complicated electoral procedures that vary from state to state, it took nine days for the announcement that Republicans had captured the 218 seats they needed to control the 435-seat chamber. Their wafer-thin majority stands in stark contrast with predictions of a “red tsunami,” red being the party colour.

The Democrats kept control of the Senate, winning 50 of the 100 seats. One Senate contest, in Georgia, will be decided in a run-off vote on December 6. It pits the Democratic incumbent, Raphael Warnock, against the Trump-backed former football star Herschel Walker. But even if Walker wins, Democrats would control a 50-50 split as Vice President Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote.

The election result not only surprised Republican leaders and most media prognosticators predicting a “red wave” but it also ran against a long-established historical trend. In the 22 mid-term elections from 1934 to 2018, the incumbent president’s party averaged a loss of 28 seats in the House and four in the Senate.

The reason: Republicans largely campaigned on economic issues: inflation, the high price of food and gasoline as well as rising crime and immigration. Biden and Democratic candidates focused on threats to democracy highlighted by January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by Trump followers trying to overturn the results of the presidential elections Biden won.

Another key theme was abortion after the Supreme Court, dominated by conservative judges, struck down a woman’s constitutional right to abortion established 47 years ago. The decision sparked demonstrations across the country.

The election featured an intervention without precedent on behalf of the Republican Party — a tweet from Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, to his 110 million followers. “Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress given that the Presidency is Democratic.”

It’s a simplistic argument, open for debate. Clearly, Americans paid little attention to the recommendation of the world’s richest man. Rather than curb excesses, the actual outcome of the vote, a divided congress, is more likely to result in frequent stalemates and scant chance of progress on issues of key importance for the future of the country.

A day after launching an intercontinental ballistic missile that landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said his country will respond to continued threats by using nuclear weapons. On the same day, images of Kim with his young daughter in public for the first time were released, confirming the long-drawn rumours of her existence. “Kim Jong-un solemnly declared that if the enemies continue to pose threats...our party and government will resolutely react to nukes with nuclear weapons and to total confrontation with all-out confrontation,” reported state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) before adding that Kim attended the missile launch on Thursday alongside his daughter and wife. The North Korean leader was responding to USA and Japan after the two allies held joint military drills over the Sea of Japan on Friday. According to KCNA, Kim slammed the drills by calling them "aggression war drills". A few days after a US Court denied former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes' request for a new trial, her counsel has sought leniency from the judges for the November 18 sentencing.

A few days after a US Court denied former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes' request for a new trial, her counsel has sought leniency from the judges for the November 18 sentencing. Reportedly, in an 82-page document filed in a California federal court, Holmes' lawyers argued that their client had been stigmatised by the media trial and that if she goes to prison, she shouldn't serve more than 18 months. "No defendant should be made a martyr to public passion. We ask that the court consider, as it must, the real person, the real company and the complex circumstances surrounding the offense," read the document. "We acknowledge that this may seem a tall order given the public perception of this case—especially when Ms. Holmes is viewed as the caricature, not the person." According to court documents, more than 130 friends, family, former Theranos employees and investors submitted letters, urging the court to show leniency towards Holmes.
