Seattle forward Breanna Stewart drilled a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as clinical reigning champions the United States crushed Canada 83-43 to sweep into the women's basketball World Cup final on Friday.

They opened with 15 unanswered points and never relented, extending their amazing World Cup win streak to 29 games to set up a gold-medal showdown in Sydney against Australia or China, who play later. Ever-dangerous Las Vegas Aces' star A'ja Wilson added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the US as they zero in on a fourth straight title and 11th overall. Laeticia Amihere scored eight points to lead a deflated Canada.

The USA were always overwhelming favourites in their 10th consecutive World Cup semi-final, having never failed to reach the last four since the knockout stage was introduced in 1986. In contrast, world number four Canada had got this far just once before, in 1986, when they also crashed to the USA.

The Americans' depth, defense and scoring talent was on full display once again. They have killed it inside all tournament, sinking 55 points a game in the paint ahead of the semi-final, while punishing errors.

It was a similar scenario against Canada, who have taken big strides under coach Victor Lapena but struggled against the speed of their opponents. The USA's 15 straight points at the start gave them an immediate stranglehold and Canada never recovered, needing five minutes to get off the mark.

While the US shot 79 percent, Canada could only manage 11 percent as they fell 27-7 behind after the first quarter. The margin only grew in the second frame to 45-21, with Stewart at the forefront. They put on another 22 points in the third quarter to build a huge 38-point buffer going into the final stretch before cruising home for an emphatic win.

The US on Thursday (September 28) imposed fresh sanctions on companies suspected of involvement in Iran's petrochemical and petroleum trade. Some of these companies are based in China. Washington has warned of further actions to enforce its economic curbs on Tehran.

In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that sanctions had been placed on two China-based companies, Zhonggu Storage and Transportation Co. Ltd, and WS Shipping Co Ltd.

The US Treasury Department also slapped sanctions on a network of companies involved in what it said was the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Iranian petrochemical and petroleum products to users in South and East Asia.

This action has targetted Iranian brokers and companies in UAE, Hong Kong and India.

Washington and Tehran's indirect talks to revive a 2015 nuclear pact, the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), have broken down.

"As Iran continues to accelerate its nuclear program in violation of the JCPOA, we will continue to accelerate our enforcement of sanctions on Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sales under authorities that would be removed under the JCPOA," Blinken said in the statement.

"These enforcement actions will continue on a regular basis, with an aim to severely restrict Iran’s oil and petrochemical exports."

Blinken warned anyone involved in such sales and transactions should stop immediately if they wish to avoid being subjected to U.S. sanctions.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday (September 28) said that the monkeypox vaccine is highly effective and that it is protecting people as early as two week after administering first dose. The agency has posted preliminary analysis. The agency found that between July 31 and September 3, unvaccinated people had 14 times the risk of acquiring monkeypox disease compared to people who were vaccinated, 14 days or more after their first shot. The results were based on confirmed infections from 32 jurisdictions across the country.

In the current outbreak, the US has seen more than 25,000 cases of monkeypox infections. The outbreak began in May this year.

"These new data provide us with a level of cautious optimism that the vaccine is working as intended," CDC director Rochelle Walensky told reporters during a briefing.

"Even in light of these promising data, we strongly recommend people receive two doses of Jynneos vaccine spaced out 28 days apart to ensure durable, lasting immune protection against monkeypox," she added.

Despite being approved, there is not yet a confirmed efficacy estimate for the Jynneos vaccine against monkeypox, because prior studies had only looked at animals and measured human immune response data.

More than 66,000 cases of monkeypox have been detected globally, but new infections have been falling since August.
The US has administered more than 680,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, focusing its efforts on gay and bisexual men, as well as transgender and gender diverse people.

US: Early data shows monkeypox vaccine to be highly effective

A United Nations envoy told Security Council on Tuesday (September 28) that world was losing patience with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan since the Islamic regime didn't show sign of allowing girls' education.

Markus Potzel, the United Nations deputy representative in Afghanistan, told the council that while there have been some positive developments since the Taliban took power last year, "they have been too few and too slow and are outweighed by the negatives."

"I am afraid that patience is running out by many in the international community regarding a strategy of engagement with Afghanistan's Taliban," he said.

Potzel spoke as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that the Taliban have been "ambiguous as to the extent to which they would wish to engage externally, absent formal recognition and predicated on being in accordance with their interpretation of the sharia."

Guterres, in his quarterly report released on Tuesday said that killing of Al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahir by US drone strike in Kabul "brought to the fore the continuing ties between the terrorist group and the Taliban, which would be contrary to the latter's counterterrorism commitments."

The report also denounced the "severe restrictions" still imposed on the rights of women and girls, including the ban on secondary education.

Facing heat from several quarters, US President Joe Biden's popularity has dipped spectacularly. Now, his approval ratings have taken a tumble as well. Reportedly, Biden's current approval ratings fare lower than what his infamous predecessor, Donald Trump, ever managed to achieve during his four tumultuous years in the office, where he was impeached twice. The poll conducted by CNN shows that Biden's approval rating stood at 38 per cent while 62 per cent disapproved of his presidentship. On the economic front, Biden has an approval rating of only 30 per cent. The figures become grim when one notes that Trump's lowest economic approval rating was 41 per cent which came way back in 2018. Moreover, ahead of the midterms, the swing states haven't been kind to Biden either. His net approval ratings in Ohio (-23), Arizona (-20), Wisconsin (-18) and Pennsylvania (-19) paint a grim picture and suggest that the battle may be uphill. Democrats starting to lose confidence While the palpable public anger is understandable, it appears that Biden is also losing the confidence of his colleagues. Reportedly, the President's approval rating for the handling of the economy has dwindled from 71 per cent, earlier this year to 62 per cent amongst the Democrats in the recent survey. Even his handling of the Ukraine crisis has been met with overwhelming negativity as 54 per cent disapprove of him. As for the immigration issue, which was one of the poll planks for the Democrat President, only 39 per cent approve of Biden's work. Ever since Joe Biden gained keys to the White House, he has had to tackle a raging pandemic, which has now snowballed into sky-high inflation, sending the economy into a tailspin. The middle-class of America is struggling to make the ends meet and is perhaps, the biggest reason for Biden's dismal performance in the survey. Read More: Joe Biden mulls declaring 'Climate Change Emergency' but can he fight off his colleagues? Approval ratings can be deceiving at times but the way Biden has conducted himself in the office leaves much to be desired. The President is on the precipice of declaring a climate emergency and if that happens, his approval ratings may take another round of severe beating. Marking a new phase in aviation travel and sustainability, an all-electric aeroplane prototype took off the tarmac in Central Washington and soared 3,500 feet high into the sky in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

The aeroplane named 'Alice' took off from Moses Lake, Washington and lasted eight minutes in the air before taxing onto the terminal. However, by then, the plane and its manufacturing company 'Eviation' had registered themselves in the history books.

“What we’ve just done is made aviation history. This is about changing the way that we fly. It’s about connecting communities in a sustainable way," Eviation CEO Greg Davis was quoted as saying by The Seattle Times.

Elon Musk is battling for his free speech. Reportedly, the Tesla founder through his attorneys on Tuesday filed a brief to end a consent decree with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which requires him to seek the approval of a Tesla lawyer before tweeting posts that might contain material information about the company. The brief was filed with the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan where Musk's lawyers called the pre-approval mandate a "government-imposed muzzle" and urged the federal body to remove it as the objectives of the provisions had been served. "Under the shadow of the consent decree, the SEC has increasingly surveilled, policed, and attempted to curb Mr. Musk's protected speech that does not touch upon the federal securities laws. Any objective served by the pre-approval provision has been served," said Musk's lawyer. While the financial regulator did not reply to Musk's brief immediately, it is expected to file its own brief with the appeals court soon. Musk was put under the proverbial shackles of censorship after an SEC lawsuit claimed that he had defrauded the investors by tweeting information regarding his company. Reportedly, on August 7, 2018, Musk tweeted that he had secured funding to take Tesla private, despite the deal nowhere near being finalised. Read more: Musk files plea seeking to end restrictions that required supervision for some tweets However, his tweet made investors jump in prematurely, only to lose their investment later. Consequently, Musk was cornered by the SEC and was forced to accept the consent decree. According to a previous filing by Musk's lawyers, the former Tesla CEO felt "forced" to sign the initial 2018 agreement because "the SEC’s action stood to jeopardise the company’s financing" and "protracted litigation" would not be in shareholders’ interest. A two-day Reuters/Ipsos national poll found Biden's approval rating at 41 per cent, up two per cent from last week's 39 per cent. One of the largest studies of its kind published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has shown that regular exercise with weights can lower the risk of premature death.

The research found that those who did 'regular' weightlifting had a 14 per cent lower risk while those who met the aerobic activity levels had a 32 per cent lower risk of premature death.

The study also added that adults who reported meeting the aerobic activity guidelines and weightlifting at least one or two times every week were found to have a 41 per cent to 47 per cent lower risk of premature death.

To arrive at the numbers, US’s National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland examined the research data from almost 100,000 US adults that took part in the study, spread across more than nine years.

Seeking to fight the recent Covid subvariants of Omicron, US pharma giant Pfizer on Monday sought emergency authorisation for its COVID-19 booster dose for school-age children aged 5 to 11.

In its request to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pfizer and its vaccine development partner, the German firm BioNTech, sought for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a 10-microgramme dose of the vaccine. The booster shot targets the original Covid strain as well as the Omicron variant and its subsequent BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants.

According to studies, the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants currently make up nearly 90 per cent of all new cases in the US. If the bivalent booster is authorised by the FDA, it will need to clear one last hurdle of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), which is USA's main federal health agency.

Currently, US FDA has authorised a 15 microgrammes bivalent booster dose of the vaccine to anyone 12 years old or older.

While the Covid cases are waning in the country, FDA Commissioner Robert Califf believes that the US may "enter yet another surge as we spend more time indoors later this fall and winter."

According to data released by the CDCP, over 616 million vaccine doses have been administered across the USA till now. Meanwhile, over 1.24 million children above the age of five have been inoculated with at least one dose since June 18, 2022. As for the booster shots, 4.4 million people in the states have received the updated booster dose.

President Joe Biden will host his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the White House on December 1 for the first full-scale state visit of his administration, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday.

The visit will "underscore the deep and enduring relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally," Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House.

State visits, which feature more pomp and ceremony than the frequent bilateral meetings hosted by US presidents for foreign leaders, have not taken place so far during Biden's presidency, which Jean-Pierre attributed to Covid pandemic restrictions.

Asked why Macron had been chosen for the honour ahead of other US allies, Jean-Pierre said "we deeply value our relationship with France."

The link between the two countries is "founded on shared democratic values, economic ties, and defense and security cooperation," she said.

Relations between Paris and Washington hit a major crisis last year when Australia abruptly announced it was ditching a contract to buy conventional French submarines in favour of a US nuclear-powered submarine deal.

The US-Australia deal was part of the newly launched AUKUS security partnership, also including Britain, which Washington sees as part of its strategy to contain China in the Asia-Pacific region.

However, the French government was furious, accusing Australia of "lying" and recalling its ambassadors to Canberra and Washington.

However, tensions have since smoothed over, with Macron emerging as a key European partner for Biden in the response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and the unprecedented Western effort to help Ukrainian troops.

A source in the French presidency said the visit, culminating with a state dinner, will "underline the deep and enduring relations," including on "close cooperation in defense and security areas."

Biden and Macron met most recently at the United Nations General Assembly last week in New York and have also had "multiple conversations" over the last year and a half, Jean-Pierre said.

World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has given a rather gloomy outlook on the global economy. In her opening statement at WTO's annual public forum in Geneva, Okonjo-Iweala stated that the world may be 'edging' into recession.

Her views echoed the similar warning some days ago by World Bank. The global lender on Tuesday also slashed growth prospects for Asia, citing concerns about slowdown in China.

"Now we have to weather what looks like an oncoming recession. I think a global recession. That's what I think we are edging into. But at the same time, we have to start thinking of the recovery. We have to restore growth," said the WTO chief.

With most central banks across the globe taking a hawkish approach and hiking the interest rates to beat inflation, the former Nigerian finance and foreign minister said the banks were in a tough spot.

"Central banks don't really have too much of a choice but to tighten and increase interest rates but the repercussions on emerging markets and developing countries is quite severe, because they too are tightening an increase in interest rates," she said.

Her statement comes less than two weeks after World Bank also provided a similar assessment. As reported by WION, World Bank President David Malpass gave a bearish outlook. "Global growth is slowing sharply, with further slowing likely as more countries fall into recession," said Malpass, adding that these trends would persist, with devastating consequences for emerging market and developing economies.

Amid fears of a global slowdown compounded by investors' risk aversion to equity markets, Rupee tumbled to a new low on Monday. Reportedly, the Indian currency fell 38 paise to hit an all-time low of 81.47 against the US greenback before closing the day at 81.6225 per dollar. Notably, the rupee had reached a low of 81.22 on Friday, prompting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to quickly sell dollars. Consequently, the rupee had a little breather. The Indian rupee taking a beating comes in the backdrop of a hawkish US Fed hiking interest rates by 75 basis points to 3-3.25 per cent last week. This was the third straight time that the Fed had announced a hike, primarily meant to arrest the sky-inflation rates in the country. However, it instantly lead to a mismatch in the global economies. The two major currencies in Asia, the yen and the yuan have tumbled as well due to investors fearing that the Asian market may experience crisis-level stress once again. Read more: Indian rupee hits new low, slips below 81-mark against US dollar for the first time ever It is pertinent to note that most major currencies across the globe have been struggling and depreciating against the US dollar. Speaking on the currency fluctuation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week stated that Indian Rupee 'held up very well' against the US dollar when compared to other currencies. "If any one currency which has held its own and did not get into fluctuation or volatility as much as other currencies, it is the Indian rupee. We have held back very well," said Sitharaman. The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled to be held later this week. The investors are keeping a close eye on the developments that come from the meeting. However, the sentiment leading to the meeting is rather downbeat amongst the investors. Experts believe that the rupee will tumble as risk-off sentiment takes the dollar index to 113.70 and sterling to 1.0557 against the dollar. A rampant United States set a new all-time women's basketball World Cup scoring record Monday with a 145-69 demolition of South Korea, while Belgium booked their place in the quarter-finals. Eight of the Americans' 12-strong roster hit doubles figures, led by Brionna Jones with 24 points, eight rebounds and one assist in Sydney. A'ja Wilson drilled 20 points and Breanna Stewart 18 as the three-time defending champions ran riot, with Shakira Austin netting a field goal with just seconds left to ensure the record.

It was previously held by Brazil, who crushed Malaysia 143-50 in a group game at the 1990 tournament. "I thought we got off to a bit of a slower start than we wanted, but we had a group that came in that really changed things for us," said USA coach Cheryl Reeve, whose team are gunning for an 11th title overall. "We got more pressure and I think our size, the number of points we got in the paint was 90 or something. So our size was a problem for them and I thought we shared the ball well."

The United States, who had already qualified for the quarter-finals, were on another level both offensively and defensively, passing 30 or more points in all four frames against a Korean team that has struggled without marquee star Park Ji-su. Defeat left the Asian side facing a crunch Group A game on Tuesday against Puerto Rico with a quarter-final slot at stake. "I try to focus on how we played rather than the result of the game. I wanted our players to show their best ability and confidence on the court," said Korean coach Jung Sun-min. "Individually I think we played very hard and very well today."

Aiming to better their fourth place in 2018, they swept home 85-55 to join the United States in the last eight from Group A. Kyara Linskens and Julie Vanloo both chipped in with 13 points for their third straight win of the 10-day competition after an opening day loss to Reeve's United States.

Defeat ended any hope the Bosnians had in a hugely disappointing debut tournament, where they leaked 364 points over four consecutive defeats with Belgium successfully blunting the threat posed by dangerwoman Jonquel Jones. The United States on Sunday (September 25) reacted sharply on possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine conflict. Russia also is staging a referendum in four eastern Ukrainian regions with the goal of annexing territory that Russian forces have taken during their invasion of Ukraine launched in February. Ukraine and its allies have called the referendums a sham designed to justify an escalation of the war and Putin's mobilization drive after recent battlefield losses.

By incorporating the areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia into Russia, Moscow could portray attacks to retake them as an attack on Russia itself, a warning to Ukraine and its Western allies.

The disruption in the supply chain, labour shortage, and a plethora of other factors have hampered the deliveries of cars across the globe. While most auto companies are troubled by the lack of semiconductors, Ford Motors is facing a rather unique problem. Reportedly, the US-based car manufacturer has had to delay its deliveries because it didn’t have the blue oval badges that are usually strapped on the exterior of its vehicles. The iconic blue-coloured badge with Ford written on it has been one of the most identifiable features of the car brand. However, due to supply chain constraints, the company is unable to get its hands on the badges and car model-specific nameplates. Read more: Ford confirms it will layoff about 3,000 employees globally amid restructuring Some reports suggest that Ford has considered workarounds such as 3-D printing the badge. However, it dropped the plan after the 3-D printed insignia did not meet the standards of quality. According to Ford, the snarl (whether only caused by badges or another item is yet not known) has impacted the deliveries of its cars, including the popular F-series pickup trucks. Data suggest that approximately 40,000 to 45,000 Ford vehicles, at the end of the third quarter, have not been shipped to the dealers because they do not have some of the important parts. The global auto industry has been wrestling with various supply-chain disruptions for more than a year. Semiconductor has been one of the most sought-after piece of equipment that has been hard to come by. However, the fact that Ford cannot get its hands on basic equipment such as a badge suggests that the supply chain crisis goes beyond a silicon chip. While there is a backlog of deliveries, Ford has not made matters easier for itself by recently recalling more than 200,000 SUVs in the United States due to some issues with the fan motors. Read more: Ford recalls over 200,000 SUVs as faulty fan motor leads to fire incidents As reported by WION, the recalled cars were mainly Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 2015 through 2017 model years. As the Iranian government has imposed restrictions on internet access in the backdrop of protests across the country over the death a 22 years old woman in the custody of morality police, the Joe Biden administration on Friday issued guidance to relax sanctions on its internet services in the west Asian country. Reportedly, the US treasury department relaxed the internet rules despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on Iran. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he further added. As reported by WION, earlier this week, the Iranian regime, anticipating the spread of protests had restricted access to the internet as well as social media sites such as Instagram and WhatsApp, the last two remaining social networks in the country. Read more: Iran restricts access to Instagram amid intensifying protests Internet watchdog NetBlocks reported a "nation-scale loss of connectivity" on network providers in Iran. London-based NetBlocks said that WhatsApp's servers were disrupted on multiple internet providers just hours after Instagram was blocked. Internet access is often curbed in Iran to stop protesters from posting videos on social media. In 2019, the government shut down the internet for about a week to stifle fuel protests which turned political, sparking the bloodiest crackdown in the 40-year history of the Islamic Republic. Last week's death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by morality police in Tehran for "unsuitable attire", has unleashed anger over issues including freedom in the Islamic Republic and an economy reeling from sanctions. The US government and technology giant Apple are currently sparring with each other over the latter's potential deal with Chinese chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.

Reportedly, the US senators fear that the deal poses threat to the country's national security.

Both Democrat and Republican chairs of the senate intelligence committee recently wrote a letter to Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, requesting a review of the deal.

“We write to convey our extreme concern about the possibility that Apple Inc will soon procure 3D Nand memory chips from Yangtze Memory Technologies Co," wrote Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, the Democratic chair and Republican vice-chair of the committee.

“Such a decision would introduce significant privacy and security vulnerabilities to the global digital supply chain that Apple helps shape given YMTC’s extensive, but often opaque, ties to the Chinese Communist party,” the letter read.

Moreover, the senators asked Haines to conduct a thorough investigation on the role YMTC plays in helping Chinese companies such as Huawei, which have been sanctioned by the White House.

Earlier, speaking to Financial Times, Apple remarked that it was “evaluating” sourcing from YMTC for some iPhones in China.

For years, US led the technology battle with China. However, the tips have recently scaled in Beijing's favour. A week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and advised him that 'today's era is not of war', Moscow has reacted to the comments and how the US and West have latched on to it to target Russia. Reportedly, Russia's Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, while addressing a press conference was asked about PM Modi's comment to which he stated that the West was misconstruing the statement and selectively picking and overplaying a part. "The West uses only those quotes that suit them while ignoring other parts," said the Russian ambassador. The Russian envoy also added that New Delhi's version was consistent with its position on the issue since the beginning. As reported extensively by WION, during a meeting with Putin in Samarkand, PM Modi, in quite frank terms conveyed his position to the Russian leader. “I know that today’s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this,” said PM Modi while adding that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue have kept the world together. The Joe Biden administration on Monday released data that shows the number of migrant arrests along the US-Mexico border had crossed the two million mark in the first 11 months of the 2022 fiscal year that ends on September 30.

The Joe Biden administration on Monday released data that shows the number of migrant arrests along the US-Mexico border had crossed the two million mark in the first 11 months of the 2022 fiscal year that ends on September 30. This is the first time that such a threshold has been eclipsed. Reportedly, in the month of August alone, the US Customs and Border Protection arrested over 200,000 migrants, taking the total to 2.3 million. Comparatively, the tally for last year stood at 1.7 million. According to data, the record high is driven by unprecedented levels of migration from countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. In August, the illegal aliens from the aforementioned countries made up over a third of the total border apprehensions. According to United Nations, seven million Venezuelans have fled their homeland with 25,000 arriving at the US border in August, followed by 19,000 Cubans and nearly 12,000 Nicaraguans. Read more: Can bused, flown migrants can live in United States? Here is all you need to know Earlier, the numbers used to be dominated by migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. However, after the pandemic, the demography of migrants has completely changed. Explaining the rationale behind the 175 percent increase in migration compared to the same period last year, Chris Magnus, commissioner, Customs and Border Protection said: “Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest US border.” In pics: Thousands of migrants in Mexico head to US border coinciding with Americas summit As the November midterm election draws closer, the Biden administration is facing flak from all quarters for its rather tame policy on dealing with illegal migrants. The Republicans have grown restive over the reluctance of the Democrat regime in the White Huse and thus, they have taken matters into their own hands to make their voices heard. For months, the Republican states are sending migrants via buses and airplanes to the stronghold states of Democrats. As reported by WION, last week Florida's Ron DeSantis flew about 50 Venezuelans to the small, upscale island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. A day after remarking that the US would defend Taiwan if China attacks the island nation, the Chinese foreign ministry has given a rather 'stern' reply to US President Joe Biden.

A day after remarking that the US would defend Taiwan if China attacks the island nation, the Chinese foreign ministry has given a rather 'stern' reply to US President Joe Biden. Reportedly, Mao Ning, spokesperson at the Chinese foreign ministry during a media briefing stated that China reserves the right to take necessary measures aimed at culling secessionist activities in Taiwan. "We are willing to do our best to strive for peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any activities aimed at secession," said Mao. Urging Washington to handle the issue 'carefully and properly' Mao further asserted that the US should not send 'wrong signals' to Taiwan's secessionist forces. "There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government of China." Mao signed off by saying. As reported by WION, on Sunday, during an interview with CBS, Biden was asked if American forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. In reply, the US president gave an affirmative answer. "Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack." said Biden. WATCH | 'US forces would defend Taiwan,' states US President Joe Biden × However, in the same interview, Biden iterated his commitment to the 'One-China' policy that Washington has been following for years. “We agree with what we signed onto a long time ago. And that there’s ‘one-China’ policy, and Taiwan makes their own judgments about their independence. We are not moving. We’re not encouraging their being independent. That’s their decision." added President Biden. However, simultaneously, it maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan while not recognising China's sovereignty over the island state. Banking major Goldman Sachs has cut the GDP forecast for the US for 2023, anticipating an aggressive rate hike from the Federal Reserve. Reportedly, the GDP growth will see a decline of 0.4 per cent to 1.1 per cent from the earlier projection of 1.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the projection for 2022 was left unchanged at zero per cent. Furthermore, the financial firm expects the US central bank, the Federal Reserve to hike policy rates by 75 basis points in its next meeting. “This higher rates path combined with recent tightening in financial conditions implies a somewhat worse outlook for growth and employment next year,” said the company.
