In a recent TV interview, US President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin to not use tactical nuclear or chemical weapons in Ukraine as his side faces setbacks.

Reportedly, Biden was quizzed if Putin, aggrieved by the losses sustained on the battlefield against the Ukrainians in the last couple of weeks would think of unleashing chemical or tactical nuclear weapons.

"Don't. Don't. Don't. You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War II," said Biden in the interview.

When pressed further on what will be the consequences if Putin, inadvertently does take the step and cross the line, Biden remarked of Russia becoming a 'pariah' state.

"You think I would tell you if I knew exactly what it would be? Of course, I'm not gonna tell you. It'll be consequential. They'll become more of a pariah in the world than they ever have been. And depending on the extent of what they do will determine what response would occur." said the US President.

Ride-hailing platform Uber earlier this week paid the state of New Jersey $100 million in back taxes after the company tried being excessively clever to avoid paying benefits to its drivers.

Ride-hailing platform Uber earlier this week paid the state of New Jersey $100 million in back taxes after the company tried being excessively clever to avoid paying benefits to its drivers. Reportedly, New Jersey's Department of Labor and Workforce Development had fined Uber and its subsidiary Raiser in 2019 over unpaid unemployment taxes for the period 2014-2018. Uber classified its drivers as self-employed which allowed the company to withhold the required benefits. Consequently, the drivers lost the right to overtime pay, paid sick leave, family leave, overtime pay, and most importantly minimum wage. Remarking that the state will not tolerate such companies, New Jersey's acting attorney general, Matt Platkin said, "We will not tolerate companies that misclassify their workers, thereby denying employees vital benefits and dodging their obligation to contribute to programs that benefit the workforce." Read more: The Uber Files: Leaked docs reveal how Uber won access to world leaders, deceived investigators Meanwhile, Uber in a statement did not directly admit that it had avoided paying benefits to its employees. "Drivers in New Jersey and nationally are independent contractors who work when and where they want - an overwhelming amount do this kind of work because they value flexibility. We look forward to working with policymakers to deliver benefits while preserving the flexibility drivers want." read the statement from the company. Despite being a worldwide, major cab-riding platform, Uber has a rather shady record of violating the regulations and later coughing up fines to brush the matters under carpet. Read More: 550 women sue Uber over allegations including kidnapping and sexual assault As reported by WION, in July, the San Franciso based company admitted that it knew about the data breach in 2016 that affected 57 million customers and yet failed to inform the public or US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Uber only confessed to the US prosecutors about its crime so as to avoid being levelled with criminal charges. It is pertinent to note that Uber had to pay a fine of $148 million to all 50 US states in September 2018, to settle the claims. However, given that Uber's market value amounted to $76 billion in the same year, many experts called it a mockery of the system. On the day when the Consumer Price Index report was released and the US stock market took a beating, President Joe Biden was busy partying on the White House lawns. Reportedly, Biden threw an 'inflation reduction' party while the CPI report showed inflation hitting a worse-than-expected mark of '8.3' per cent. "Exactly four weeks ago, I signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law. So today, we're celebrating. Tune in at 3 PM ET as I deliver remarks and welcome the leaders and advocates who made it happen to the People's House." tweeted President Biden from his official Twitter account. Reportedly, while the pace of consumer price inflation cooled compared to previous months, it was still touching a record four-decade high. Biden hosting a celebration for the Inflation Reduction Act at the White House (AP) Investors had hoped for better numbers but after the report release, they were forced to sell everything, leading to The Dow falling nearly 1300 points. Democrats have spent our economy into disaster and now they’re partying while families pay. They could not look more out of touch if they tried.” tweeted the Republican leader. Democrats have spent our economy into disaster and now they’re partying while families pay. They could not look more out of touch if they tried. — Leader McConnell (@LeaderMcConnell) September 13, 2022 × This is not the first time that Biden has come under the scanner for his apathy in the face of a crisis. As reported by WION last month, Biden claimed that the US economy had 'zero inflation' in the month of July, thereby inviting seething criticism from Republicans across the board for trying to manipulate the numbers and present a rosy picture. Read more: President Biden claims US had ‘zero per cent inflation’ in July; gets trolled by Republicans "Before I begin today, I want to say a word about the news that came out today relative to the economy. Actually, I just want to say a number: Zero," Biden had told reporters at the time. The President further added, “Here’s what that means: while the price of some things go up, went up last month, the price of other things went down by the same amount. The result? Zero inflation last month." While Biden may have been technically right, the overall picture was quite different. The CPI report released on the same day revealed that the rate of inflation was down 0.6 per cent from June's 9.1 per cent but it certainly did not mean that inflation had reached the magical 'zero' per cent mark. Investors fear that the Fed hiking rates in an attempt to get ahead of inflation may be pushing the economy towards recession. However, for two consecutive months, Biden and his executives have failed to read the room and indulged in a PR party. A report by an organisation founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has sounded the warning bell for the US tech space. The report warns that the US could lose the tech competition to China if it does not take action on 5G, AI, and microchip core fronts. The report was presented by Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) and it added that the tech race would be going through its critical phase during the 2025 and 2030 period. It is during this window that Beijing might be able to edge out the USA if the current trend continues. “If we don’t get our act together in these three core battlegrounds, in terms of bio, in terms of next-generation computer power, in terms of next-generation inventions, it’s not going to happen in the countries that are at the forefront of democracies today. Everything will happen in China." said Ylli Bajraktari, SCSP chief. Read more: Joe Biden set to announce curbs on US chip exports to China: Report The report titled “Mid-Decade Challenges to National Competitiveness” further shed light on the fact that China has been making rapid advancements in the aforementioned core areas. It added that the USA has been playing catch-up on 5G and microelectronics supply chains. “The PRC [People’s Republic of China] is the United States’ chief ideological opponent, largest economic competitor, most capable technology peer, and most threatening military rival. Technology is central to all parts of the competition." the report read. Already delayed by several years, NASA's Artemis mission is proving a tough challenge for the premier space agency. After two postponements, NASA is reportedly targeting September 27 as the next possible launch date for the unmanned mission.

Already delayed by several years, NASA's Artemis mission is proving a tough challenge for the premier space agency. After two postponements, NASA is reportedly targeting September 27 as the next possible launch date for the unmanned mission. Reportedly, NASA informed about the date in a blog post on Monday by stating that a "70-minute launch window opens at 11:37 AM EDT on September 27" while the mission may end with an ocean splashdown of the Orion capsule on November 5. Furthermore, the space agency stated that apart from September 27, it has zeroed in on October 2 as the next date for the launch. However, the September 27 launch can only take place if NASA's engineering team can successfully carry out a test to fuel the Space Launch System (SLS). Additionally, it will require a waiver to avoid retesting batteries of the emergency flight system that detonates the rocket if it strays away from the designated path. The agency also gave an update about the repair work it had been undertaking after the failed launch due to leaks earlier this month. "Over the weekend, Artemis I teams completed repair work to the area of a hydrogen leak, reconnecting the ground- and rocket-side plates on the quick disconnect for the liquid hydrogen fuel feed line where two seals were replaced last week." read the blog post. Read more: NASA postpones Artemis I mission launch again as bid to plug hazardous leak fails As reported by WION extensively, the Artemis programme is NASA's successor to the Apollo lunar missions from fifty years ago. The only spaceflights to date to land humans on the moon's surface involved six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, during which twelve men made moonwalks. The SLS is the largest new vertical launch system NASA has created since the Saturn V rockets used in the 1960s and 1970s. However, the SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns. As a recession looms around the US economy, banking major Goldman Sachs is planning to fire hundreds of its employees as early as next week. Reportedly, the layoffs will mark the resumption of its annual practice which was halted the last two years due to the pandemic. According to data available, without any layoffs, the company's headcount had grown to more than 47,000 globally, at the end of June, which was a 15 per cent increase from the similar period last year. Experts believe that Goldman Sachs could clip as many as one to five per cent of its low-performance employees, come the next week. This will mean losing anywhere between 500 to 2,400 employees. WATCH | UK Inflation could top 20% next year: Goldman Sachs × It is not like the banking giant had not signalled this move. In July, during an earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Denis Coleman warned that the company might slow hiring and cut expenses as the economic outlook worsens. "Given the challenging operating environment, we are closely re-examining all of our forward spending and investment plans to ensure the best use of our resources," said Coleman. "Specifically, we have made the decision to slow hiring velocity and reduce certain professional fees going forward, though these actions will take some time to be reflected in our results." he further added. Coleman stated that the company had witnessed a 48 per cent slump in quarterly profit, forcing it to clock in the tough changes. It is pertinent to note that wobbly macroeconomic conditions, uncertain geopolitical climate due to the Russia-Ukraine war and sky-high inflation have contributed to the decision. In addition to reinstating the annual tradition of trimming down the employee count, Goldman Sachs is also expected to bring back its annual performance review policy for employees at the end of the year. Previously, other banking majors on Wall Street such as Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co. have also terminated the contracts of their employees to downsize. In a rather welcome move to make higher education accessible to all, New jersey's Princeton University earlier this week announced that students whose parents earn less than $100,000 per year will have to no longer pay any expenses to attend college. The move is aimed at increasing the 'socioeconomic diversity' of the Ivy League campus, according to the school administrators. Princeton University, whose notable alumni include Former First lady Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor amongst others will no longer accept any payment from students belonging to the aforementioned income bracket. The move is expected to help over 25 per cent of the university's undergraduates. Reportedly, over 1,500 students will receive full financial aid that covers their tuition, room, and board expenses. "One of Princeton's defining values is our commitment to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds can not only afford a Princeton education but can flourish on our campus and in the world beyond it," stated Christopher L. Eisgruber, Princeton's president. In addition to lowering the ceiling for availing financial help, the University has also done away with the annual student contribution. Under this contribution, students were expected to pay a portion of tuition and expenses with their own savings and on-campus work. Instead, students will have increased financial aid for books and other personal allowance, "These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate." President Eisgruber further added. A little more than a year ago, the US troops haphazardly ditched the Afghanistan shores, leaving behind highly sophisticated military machinery that included state-of-the-art helicopters, tanks and armoured vehicles. Many believed that the Taliban might become unstoppable after gaining access to such machinery. However, fast forward today and three Talibanis have died trying to fly an American Black Hawk helicopter. Reportedly, during a Taliban training exercise in the capital city of Kabul, the terrorist operatives were attempting to fly the highly sophisticated helicopter. However, they lost control and died in the process, according to the defence ministry. The fallout of a high inflation-laden economy is being borne by US households. Reportedly, a federal reserve report released on Friday showed that the US household wealth tumbled by more than $6.1 trillion in Q2 to its lowest level in more than a year. The report stated that the household net income slid to $143.8 trillion at the end of June from $149.9 trillion, recorded in March, earlier this year. On a whole, the collective wealth of Americans had taken a beating of more than $6.2 trillion from the $150 trillion figure set at the end of 2021. The drop was historic as it breached the previous record by more than $30 billion, recorded two years earlier when the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in the market during its initial days. While the US household income is taking a beating, household expenditures are touching new highs. Reportedly, the average cost of raising a child has grown to over $300,000 in the USA, primarily due to sky-high inflation rates. According to a Bloomberg report, the average amount required to raise a child of a middle-income married couple, born in 2015, till he/she is 17 years old or in high school will be $310,605; which comes down to roughly $18,271 per year. As reported by WION, the US has been facing its worst bout of economic slowdown in recent times. The economy has contracted for two successive quarters which suggests that a recession has set in place. The inflation rate for the month of July stood at 8.5 per cent, majorly due to a drop in fuel prices. However, if compared to year-on-year numbers, the inflation rate was still touching a 40-year record high and consumers were bearing the brunt of it. In June, the figure stood at 9.1 per cent. Moreover, a recent Bloomberg survey stated that there was a 40 per cent chance that the country will slip into a recession by next year. USA's attempt to kick start the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) may have been dealt an early blow as India walked out of the trade talks. Reportedly, in a statement released after two days of negotiations in Los Angeles, the US side released a statement explaining India's position. “India is not now in the ‘trade pillar’. However, minister (Piyush) Goyal and I have been talking and we have our bilateral and trade policy forum. I should be meeting him by the end of this year. We would cover the same issues in that bilateral channel,” said US trade representative Katherine Tai. Stating that doors remained open for New Delhi to join the economic side of the platform, Tai further added, “That question you should pose to minister Goyal. I wouldn’t characterise it as opting out, India is not in the trade pillar right now.” It is pertinent to note that Joe Biden launched the IPEF initiative in May earlier this year. IPEF is an attempt by Washington to bring together Asian countries to counter China's influence in the region. It is pertinent to note that the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan have counterclaims over the South China Sea which China considers its own. Thus, the Philipines extending the services of its military bases to the US is a move, purely dictated by its own gains. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Clara Sorrenti and her supporters are the faces of a campaign that attempts to take down Kiwi Farms, an internet forum that doubles as an image-sharing website where the users troll and harass anyone they like. Sorrenti is a Canadian trans Twitch streamer who Kiwi Farms and its deranged users targeted by releasing her personal information. Before Sorrenti, a Republican senator from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, was targeted in a 'swatting' incident linked to the website.

US President Joe Biden has reportedly filed for re-election with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday, according to data available on the Commission's website.

The entry on website reveals that Biden started the filing process with FEC on Friday (August 26). This is perhaps the strongest indication that the democrat leader has given in recent times of running for a second, consecutive term.

Biden's filing for re-election comes in the backdrop of several democrat leaders vocing concerns about the President's low approval ratings.

As reported extensively by WION, in July, Biden's approval ratings fared lower than what his infamous predecessor, Donald Trump, ever managed to achieve during his four tumultuous years in the office.

According to CNN, Biden's approval rating stood at 38 per cent while 62 per cent disapproved of his presidentship. On the economic front, Biden has an approval rating of only 30 per cent.

Moreover, the President's approval rating for the handling of the economy dwindled from 71 per cent, earlier this year to 62 per cent amongst the Democrats in the recent survey.

A woman inmate in California, USA who suffered a miscarriage in police custody six years ago has been awarded a compensatory sum of $480,000 by the government officials of Orange County.

Reportedly, the woman named Sandra Quinones who is no longer in custody, suffered a miscarriage on March 28, 2016 after her water broke during custody while the police officials showed extreme lethargy in taking her to the hospital, resulting in the death of the fetus.

The payment is part of a federal wrongful death lawsuit that was filed by Sandra on behalf of her lawyer Dick Herman.

In the lawsuit, Sandra claimed that after her water broke, she pressed the button in her cell, meant to summon the police officials for help. However, for more than two hours, not a single officer turned up at her cell while she writhed in pain.

Reportedly, Sandra has to formally accept the settlement for the agreement to be considered final.

The US defended its decision to transit its warships through the Taiwan Strait and said that the exercise was 'very consistent' with USA's "one China policy" and seeking a free and open Indo-Pacific.

"This was planned long ago," John Kirby, National Security Council spokesperson, said on CNN, of the first transit of the strait by US warships since House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan earlier this month. The transit of US warships did not go down well with China

The passage by the two vessels is "very consistent with our one-China policy, very consistent with our desire to make sure that we can continue to work toward a free and open Indo-Pacific," said Kirby

China considers Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to capture the island state. Transit of foreign vessels, especially warships through Taiwan Strait is perceived by China as an open challenge to its influence in these waters.

"The USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville, two US guided-missile cruisers, sailed through the Taiwan Strait on August 28 and hyped it up publicly," the Eastern Theatre Command (ETC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said on Sunday.

The ETC conducted security tracking and monitoring of the US warships' passage in the whole course and had all movements of the two US warships under control, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the ETC, said in a statement.

US doubles down on warship transit through Taiwan Strait

Major South Korean battery maker LG and Japanese automaker Honda are investing $4.4 billion in a joint venture in the United States to produce batteries for Honda electric vehicles in the North American market, the two companies said Monday.

The plant’s site is still undecided, but construction will begin in early 2023, with mass production of advanced lithium-ion battery cells to start by the end of 2025. It’s likely to be near Marysville, Ohio, or Greensburg, Indiana, where Honda has huge factories that make its most popular models such as the Accord, CR-V and Civic.

The joint venture is to be set up this year, with the closing of the deal subject to regulatory approval.

“Our joint venture with Honda, which has significant brand reputation, is yet another milestone in our mid- to long-term strategy of promoting electrification in the fast-growing North American market,” said LG Energy Solution Chief Executive Youngsoo Kwon.

The plant will produce batteries exclusively for Honda vehicles assembled in North America, including the company’s Acura luxury brand, according to a joint statement.

Honda’s joint venture plant is part of a larger trend of automakers announcing US battery factories as they try to establish a domestic supply chain for the next generation of vehicle propulsion. Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Stellantis and VinFast have announced plans for 10 US battery plants.

A new US law gives them even more incentive to build batteries in North America. It includes a tax credit of up to $7,500 that could be used to defray the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle. But to qualify for the full credit, the electric vehicle must contain a battery built in North America with 40 per cent of the metals mined or recycled on the continent.

“Honda is working toward our target to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities the company is involved in by 2050,” said Honda Chief Executive Toshihiro Mibe.

LG, a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and power systems, already makes them in joint ventures with US automakers General Motors and Ford Motor Co., as well as South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group. The company is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, but has operations across the world, including the US, China and Australia.

Demand for electric vehicles is expected to grow in the US and many other nations because of concerns about climate change and pollution, as well as rising gas prices. All of the world’s top automakers are strengthening their EV lineups.

LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area consulting firm, expects EVs to be 5.6 per cent of US new vehicle sales this year, rising to more than 36 per cent by 2030. Globally, LMC says 8.6 per cent of new vehicle sales will be electric this year, and that will jump to 33 per cent by 2030.

Honda is working with GM to co-develop electric vehicles including a Honda and Acura SUVs. The Honda is expected to go on sale in early 2024, followed soon by the Acura luxury brand. Honda also has said it plans to make its own electric vehicles later this decade.

A shooting incident between two groups at a Sikh Gurudwara (Temple) in California has caused injuries to three. Reportedly, the incident was reported on Saturday (August 27) outside the Stockton Gurudwara Sahib.

According to news wire agency ANI, the clash was between two groups of Sikh Referendum 2020. The Stockton police arrived at the shooting scene around 6:40 PM ET and found three Sikh men injured. They all were quickly transferred to a hospital by the emergency responders.

Public information officer Joe Silva in a statement remarked that the incident occurred at an event around Sikh Temple Street. However, the officer said the shooting incident was not linked to the Gurudwara and did not happen on the property of the Gurudwara.

It is pertinent to note that the Gurudwara had held a weightlifting competition on the property before the incident. No scuffle had been reported while the event inside the Gurudwara was in motion.

However, another event that was happening outside the Gurudwara is being dubbed as the spot where the skirmish happened. The Gurudwara, in a Facebook post, stated that they had no connection with the incident.

"The weightlifting competition was done successfully without any altercation and harm to the Sangat. The altercation during this event happened outside the Gurdwara and had no link to the powerlifting event and the Gurdwara Sahib." the Gurudwara said.

"Stockton Police Department is currently investigating the occurrence and Stockton Gurdwara Sahib Committee will update you as soon as the investigation is completed. Gurdwara Sahib Stockton is committed to the safety of the Sangat.” it further added.

Some unsubstantiated claims that WION cannot independently confirm have suggested that the scuffle was between two groups associated with Sikh Referendum 2020.

Read more: US probes claims that Sikh migrants' turbans confiscated at US-Mexico border It is pertinent to note that the Gurudwara had held a weightlifting competition on the property before the incident. × Some unsubstantiated claims that WION cannot independently confirm have suggested that the scuffle was between two groups associated with Sikh Referendum 2020. It has been a year since the US forces haphazardly left their posts in Afghanistan, leaving the land in the hands of Talibani barbarians and terrorists. During the muddled exit, US troops, its allies and numerous other dependents were left in the lurch, fighting Talibanis. Now, a documentary has revealed that during the exit, a US Army colonel blocked the exit of several allies, effectively pushing them into the killing zones. IN PICS | What life in Afghanistan looks like after one year of Taliban rule? Reportedly, in a new documentary titled, “Send Me” directed by Nick Palmisciano, the members of a special operations volunteer team have revealed that an unnamed Colonel 'murdered' the passengers of five buses by not allowing them to board the planes that could have allowed them to leave Kabul. “There was a colonel who came out and wanted to show that essentially he was the one that could decide whether or not somebody could get on a plane or not," stated a witness, whose identity was concealed in the documentary. Meanwhile, MMA fighter turned-solider Tim Kennedy, who was part of the 13-member group tasked with the job of saving as many allies as possible added: "The colonel made the call to ‘put everybody back out'. I don’t care who they are, they get back on those buses and those buses go back into Kabul." Read more: Taliban restricts female students from leaving Kabul for studies: Report It is pertinent to note that passengers of the five buses had verified documents. They were carefully searched and vetted by the Marines and arrived at the US-controlled Black Gate on the fateful day of August 25, 2021 around 3 AM. However, the top-ranking Colonel from the 82nd Airborne division would not let them or the buses ferrying them get inside. The Colonel did not even allow the refugees that carried a US passport, stating the documents might have been forged. As a last-ditch attempt to save the lives of refugees on the buses, a call was made to North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. The Republican leader further egged the army generals to intervene. However, by then, the situation outside the airport had turned dire and effectively the fate of the refugees was sealed. The documentary is streaming on Amazon Prime and in select theatres. US Colonel ‘murdered’ several allies, did not let them board planes from Kabul: Documentary

A day after China and the US signed a pact that will allow US authorities to inspect the accounting books of Chinese companies listed on the US stock exchange, Beijing's mouthpiece Global Times applauded the move.

Reportedly, in an editorial titled 'Audit oversight agreement of US-listed Chinese companies a symbolic case of China-US cooperation' the publication dubbed the signing of the pact as 'an important step forward.'

It further added that the signing of the pact should serve as a lesson on how to deal with potentially sensitive issues.

"The fact that China and the US reached a cooperation agreement on audit oversight provides a useful lesson for the current bilateral relationship — the two countries can reach a solution that addresses each other's concerns on some critical and sensitive issues, as long as they adhere to the principle of reciprocity and mutual benefit," read the editorial.

As reported by WION, the signing of the pact came as a relief to hundreds of Chinese businesses, investors, as well as Wall Street. According to data, 61 Chinese companies are currently listed in the US, with a total market capitalisation of about $1.3 trillion.

Wall Street did not want to lose out on such a humongous piece of the money pie and thus lobbied hard with the government to reverse some of the strict Trump-era policies.

If the policy goes through as planned, China will have the opportunity to continue accessing the deepest capital markets in the world.

Why did Chinese companies not share their books?

It is pertinent to note that for a long time, experts believed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) did not allow Chinese companies to share their account books with overseas audit agencies.

Access to books has been a major bone of contention between Washington and Beijing. When Donald Trump was in power and amidst a major trade war with China, he employed the strategy of opening 'books' to pin down China.

American regulatory watchdog Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has the power to audit such companies. However, if the watchdog is not able to access the books for a period of three years, the company stands to be de-listed from the stock market.

The refusal to reveal the books threatened the future of big tech Chinese companies such as Alibaba, JD.Com Inc, and NIO INC among others.

However, SEC Chair Gary Gensler added a word of caution that the success of the policy will only depend on PCAOB receiving the books.

“Make no mistake though: The proof will be in the pudding. This agreement will be meaningful only if the PCAOB actually can inspect and investigate completely audit firms in China,” said Gensler.

Chinese mouthpiece Global Times lauds the inking of US-China audit deal

The US said on Thursday (August 26) that it will suspend 26 flights to China, operated by Chinese carriers. The measure has been taken in response to China's decision to suspend some US carriers over COVID-19 cases. The US decision will see suspension of flights by Xiamen, Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. The suspension will be in effect from September 5 through September 28.

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) cited the recent cancellation of 26 American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines flights over COVID-19 cases.

The suspensions include 19 flights from Los Angeles and 7 China Eastern flights from New York.

There was no immediate comment from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.

USDOT said as of Aug. 7 Chinese authorities revised their policies so if the number of passengers testing positive for COVID-19 reached 4% of the total number of passengers on a flight to China, one flight would be suspended and two flights if it reached 8%.

USDOT said the U.S. government has repeatedly raised objections with the government of China saying the rules place "undue culpability on carriers" when travelers test negative before boarding their flight from the United States only to "test positive for COVID-19 after their arrival in China."

China and the US have been at loggerheads over air services. In August 2021, US put limitation on four flights from Chinese carriers to 40% passenger capacity for four weeks. The step was taken after China imposed similar limits on four American carriers.
