Following the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion has become a topic of active discussion across the planet. Now, the Indian Supreme Court, hearing an abortion case has observed that all women, irrespective of their marital status should have the same rights to end an unwanted pregnancy.

Reportedly, the Supreme Court was hearing the case of a 25-year-old woman who had conceived during a live-in relationship. However, since the relationship had ended and she wanted to abort the pregnancy, she was denied as the Indian laws do not have a provision for women in such cases.

The court noted that it will seek to interpret the law to include 'unmarried woman' and 'single woman' under the provision that allows abortion till up to 24 weeks.

As reported by WION, according to the abortion laws in India, a woman may choose to end their pregnancy up to 20 weeks if their doctor recommends it, under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MPT), a law passed by the Parliament in 1971.

Moreover, special categories of women such as survivors of sexual abuse, minors, rape victims, incest, and disabled women can seek termination up to 24 weeks.

And therein lies the blindspot for unmarried women. Rule 3B(c) of the MTP Rules, 2003 states that women who have a change of marital status during pregnancy, either by way of widowhood or divorce may undergo abortion up to 24 weeks.

After a hiatus of five years, allies USA and South Korea have begun their annual joint military drills, named Ulchi Freedom Shield in the region, much to the chagrin of 'notorious' neighbour North Korea.

The military drill started on Monday (August 22) and is expected to carry on till September 1. The drill will see both sides carry out field exercises involving tens of thousands of troops, tanks, aircraft and warships.

Israeli spyware firm NSO group that manufactures the controversial Pegasus software has announced a change in the top hierarchy. Reportedly, the company's Chief Executive Officer Shalev Hulio has stepped down with immediate effect from his position on Sunday. Additionally, the company is laying off 100 employees out of its workforce of 750.

According to the company, Hulio will be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Yaron Shohat who will oversee the reorganisation of the company until a new successor is placed.

It is pertinent to note that in March last year, Hulio had told his employees that he might be leaving the post soon. At the time, Hulio said that he would remain part of the firm but would recommend hiring a professional CEO with experience in managing public companies if NSO Group went public.

Speaking about the company's flagship product after the announcement, Shohat said, "The company’s products remain in high demand with governments and law enforcement agencies because of its cutting-edge technology and proven ability to assist these customers in fighting crime and terror." It is pertinent to note that in March last year, Hulio had told his employees that he might be leaving the post soon. At the time, Hulio said that he would remain part of the firm but would recommend hiring a professional CEO with experience in managing public companies if NSO Group went public. However, Hulio stepped down the same year as the CEO, only to take the place again after two weeks as his replacement Isaac Benbenisti quit the company.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently investigating hundreds of allegations of misconduct by Starbucks related to the union campaign, including claims of closing stores to dismantle unions, firing employees, and intimidating and threatening workers to prevent them from unionising.

"Interest in a union does not exempt partners from following policies that are in place to protect partners, our customers and the communities we serve.” added the spokesperson. Reportedly, the seven Starbucks baristas had attempted to unionise the Memphis branch of the company and were promptly fired. However, to fend off the heat, Starbucks, in its official statement cited 'violation of the safety and security policies of the company as the reason for the termination.
A slowing economy at home, Covid-19 challenges, supply chain restrictions and Trump-era trade war sanctions have hit Chinese technology giant Huawei hard. Reportedly, for the first time since 2008, the telecom equipment company has seen a drop in the number of employees as the headcount dropped by 2,000.

According to a sustainability report published by the Shenzhen-based company on its website, Huawei's headcount went down from the high of 197,000 in 2020 to 195,000 at the end of 2021.

The drop in the number of employees comes in the backdrop of the earning reports published last week which painted a not-so-happy picture. According to Huawei, the company's net profit almost halved on a year-on-year basis, dropping by 5.9 per cent.

What did Trump do?

It is pertinent to note that it was former US President Donald Trump that started the crusade to eject Huawei off the American market. Trump was of the view that Huawei had deep ties with China's state surveillance and that the company was rigging its 5G equipment to act as spy tools for the Politburo.

The biggest jolt came when the Trump administration banned Taiwanese chip giant, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, from supplying Huawei with semiconductor chips. Since then, the company's telecom business has never really managed to get back on its pre-sanctions trajectory.

Making basic healthcare facilities available to all, the US Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday announced it had signed the historic legislation that allows millions of Americans to buy hearing aids without any prescription, from over-the-counter.

Up until now, the devices were not accessible if an individual did not have a medical subscription. Moreover, only a handful of retail stores sold the device, making accessibility a major issue.

Reportedly, FDA changing the rules is expected to benefit nearly 30 million American adults. According to FDA, the finalised rules will reduce the red tapism in the industry. Moreover, it will allow a new class of hearing aids in the market which would not require any standard medical exam or a prescription from a doctor.

“Today’s action by the FDA represents a significant milestone in making hearing aids more cost-effective and accessible,” Xavier Becerra, Health and Human Services Secretary was quoted as saying by AP.

According to FDA estimates, of the 30 million Americans that need hearing devices, only 600,000 or one-fifth use the device, with the rest not willing to take the tedious doctor's prescription route. Not to forget, the devices are not cheap.

A single pair of hearing aid and their fitting cost as much as $5,000 which puts a heavy dent in the patient's wallet and in most cases, is not covered under health insurance.

FDA believes that the decentralisation of the process ought to bring the cost down as traditional manufacturers are expected to scale their operations. Experts predict that the hearing market, after the implementation of the new legislation, in a few years will resemble the eye care market where consumers are spoiled for choices and don't have to necessarily rely on prescriptions and medical exams.

However, few caveats have been applied to make sure that patients do not come in harm's way. The new over-the-counter status won't apply to devices that are expected to be used by patients with severe hearing loss. Only a prescription will work in such cases.

Making basic healthcare facilities available to all, the US Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday announced it had signed the historic legislation that allows millions of Americans to buy hearing aids without any prescription, from over-the-counter.

Read More: After Juul e-cigarettes, Americans rally behind 'candy' flavoured disposable e-cigs FDA believes that the decentralisation of the process ought to bring the cost down as traditional manufacturers are expected to scale their operations. Read more: To avenge Soleimani's killing, Iran planned an assassination attempt to kill former US NSA As reported by WION, on Wednesday, the DoJ stated that an Iranian military operative named Shahram Poursafi alias Mehdi Rezayi had been booked for the assassination plot. Reportedly, Poursafi, a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had offered $300,000 to an individual in the US to kill Bolton. The money was offered in the backdrop of the US military conducting an airstrike in 2020 which killed General Qasem Soleimani, Iran's top military commander at the time. WATCH: US charges Iranian man for trying to assassinate John Bolton × It is believed that it was Bolton who engineered USA's 'maximum pressure' strategy during his 17-months tenure as the top Trump aide. During the Republican leader's reign, America applied tough economic sanctions on Iran and even walked out of the nuclear deal, which the current Biden administration is looking to revive. Naturally, after Trump, Bolton became the prime target of the Iranians. Moreover, a day after the revelation, some experts are questioning the integrity of the Justice Department as well as the Biden administration for not having released the threat report earlier. Reportedly, the final text of the Iran nuclear deal was discussed a few days earlier in Vienna. Meanwhile, the plot to kill Bolton had been in the works since 2020. Thus, questions are being raised about whether the DoJ kept mum all this time to give the Biden administration time to tie the loose ends of the nuclear deal. Speaking about the negotiation in Vienna, Bolton slammed the Biden government and stated that any attempt to appease 'Tehran' will only encourage threats against US officials.
Amid a global pandemic, a war between two nations and a breakdown in the supply chain system resulting in sky-high inflation rates, most countries and their economies are in the doldrums. Industry experts have been fuelling fears that a global recession is just around the corner.

Now, a Bloomberg survey has attempted to gauge the percentage probabilities of various countries slipping into recession. While the survey results may be cheerful for a country like India, it is not so much for Sri Lanka, the US or even the whole of Europe.

According to the survey, the island nation of Sri Lanka is at the precipice of recession. There is an 85 per cent probability that Sri Lanka slips into recession, as early as next year. The sharp tumble in fortunes is a marked departure from the 33 per cent chance recorded last year.

Contrary to Sri Lanka, its neighbouring country of India has a zero probability of facing a severe economic slump, according to the economists involved in the research. Despite the Indian rupee touching a historical low against the US dollar, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been able to keep the economy in good shape by increasing lending rates or repo rates by 90 basis points cumulatively in the various monetary meetings.

What about US?

However, the US has not fared well in the survey as economists believe that there is a 40 per cent chance of the country slipping into a recession by next year. It is pertinent to note that the inflation rate in the US increased by a whopping 8.6 per cent in May 2022, reaching a forty-year high.

Nearly every US-based brokerage firm is of the same view that the US can easily slip into recession if course-corrective measures are not employed.

China has infiltrated the US Federal Reserve for over a decade: GOP lawmakers allege in report

A week after Senate ratified the entrance of Nordic countries Finland and Sweden into North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), US President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed the instruments of ratification, confirming the accession.

The expansion of NATO, the world's most powerful military alliance, comes in the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Our alliance is closer than ever, it is more united than ever and after Finland and Sweden join, we will be stronger than ever.”

Taking to Twitter, Biden reaffirmed his formal backing to the two Nordic countries. "Finland and Sweden will make NATO stronger. Today, I signed the U.S. Instruments of Ratification, making the United States the 23rd Ally to approve their membership in NATO," he tweeted.

Biden said, "It was and is a watershed moment. I believe in the alliance and for the greater security and stability not only of Europe and the United States but of the world." Taking a dig at Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US president, speaking from the East Room of the White House added, ″Putin thought he could break us apart. Our alliance is closer than ever, it is more united than ever and after Finland and Sweden join, we will be stronger than ever.” Taking to Twitter, Biden reaffirmed his formal backing to the two Nordic countries. "Finland and Sweden will make NATO stronger. Today, I signed the U.S. Instruments of Ratification, making the United States the 23rd Ally to approve their membership in NATO," he tweeted. USA to provide additional $4.5 billion to Ukraine; takes the total funding to $8.5 billion

The European Commission on Friday (August 5) said that Iran and the USA should take ‘one last effort’ to salvage the nuclear deal. The talks to revive the nuclear deal resumed in Vienna on Thursday. The EC said that political decisions were needed to break impasse between Iran and world powers.

“The time has come for one last effort,” spokesperson Peter Stano told a news briefing on Friday, explaining that the EU — as coordinator of the talks — had proposed a new draft text last month because room for additional manoeuvre had been exhausted.

"Clear, decisive political decisions need to be taken by the capitals of the countries involved in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action)," he said. "So, that's the process that is underway in Vienna. We hope it will lead to results."

The nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers in 2015 during the tenure of then US president Barack Obama. In 2018, however, former US president Donald Trump took US out of the deal.

Talks to revive the deal have been going on in Vienna without much of result till now.

AFP quoted an unnamed senior EU official, who said progress was being made on some remaining obstacles. This includes guarantees that the US won't leave the deal by going back on its word.

"We have now quite substantial guarantees," the official said. "It's my understanding that Iran is happy and feels satisfied with what is in the text."

A demand by Tehran that the United States remove the country's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the State Department's official blacklist of "foreign terrorist organizations" has been dropped from the discussions, the official added. It will instead be handled "in the future" — after the deal.

EU calls for ‘one last effort’ to salvage Iran nuclear deal

A dog miraculously survived being shot in the head after fleeing his breeding farm and going missing in the US. The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) shared photos of the corgi named Arthur, on Instagram and shared the dog's story in the caption.

"Arthur is fortunate to be alive. That is not an exaggeration," PSPCA said in the post. Arthur was discovered crawling under a fence in the rural town of New Holland, Lancaster County, according to the organization.

Initially, the property owners told PSPCA that the fence caused the injured dog's head wound. Vets later determined that he had been shot between the eyes and left for dead.
