Due to the United States Federal Reserve raising its key rate by three-quarters of a point this week in a bid to tame high inflation the average long-term U.S. mortgage rates had their biggest one-week jump in 35 years, climbing from 5.23% last week to 5.78% this week, the highest its been since November of 2008 during the housing crisis.

Wednesday’s rate hike by the Fed was its biggest in a single action since 1994. The US central bank raised the benchmark borrowing rate on Wednesday by 0.75 percentage points, bigger than the telegraphed half-point increase after economic data in recent days showed inflation strengthening and consumer confidence weakening.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported on Thursday that the brisk jump in rates, along with a sharp increase in home prices, has been pushing potential homebuyers out of the market.

Mortgage applications are down more than 15% from last year and refinancings are down more than 70%, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Those figures are likely to worsen with more Fed rate increases a near certainty.

Higher borrowing rates appear to be slowing the housing market. Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes slowed for the third consecutive month in April as mortgage rates increased, driving up borrowing costs for buyers as home prices soared.

Homeownership has become invariably difficult nowadays, especially for first-time buyers. Besides high inflation, rising mortgage rates and increasing home prices, the supply of homes for sale continues to be limited.

Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe warned US on Friday that Beijing will "not hesitate to start a war" in the event of Taiwan declaring independence. The warning came as he held his first face-to-face meeting with his US counterpart, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin. The meet took place on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.

Taiwan has its own government but China views the island nation as part of its own territory.

Wei warned Austin that "if anyone dares to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese army will definitely not hesitate to start a war no matter the cost", defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian quoted the minister as saying during the meeting.

The Chinese minister vowed that Beijing would "smash to smithereens any 'Taiwan independence' plot and resolutely uphold the unification of the motherland", according to the Chinese defence ministry.

He "stressed that Taiwan is China's Taiwan... Using Taiwan to contain China will never prevail", the ministry said.

Austin "reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the (Taiwan) Strait, opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo, and called on (China) to refrain from further destabilising actions toward Taiwan", according to the US Department of Defense.

China talks tough, says will 'not hesitate to start war' over Taiwan

The US has given go-ahead for a possible sale of parts worth USD 120 million to help Taiwan maintain its warships. Such maintenance will keep up the island nation's combat readiness against China.

China considers Taiwan to be its own region and has not ruled out use of force.

The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency said it had delivered the required certification notifying Congress following State Department approval for the sale, which was requested by Taiwan's de facto embassy in Washington.

The agency said that this sale covered unclassified spare and repair parts for ships and ship systems, logistical technical assistance, and US government and contractor representative technical and logistical support.

"The proposed sale will contribute to the sustainment of the recipient's surface vessel fleet, enhancing its ability to meet current and future threats," the agency said in a statement, adding that the parts would be sourced from "approved U.S. Navy vendors and/or US. Navy stock".

According to Taiwan's defence ministry, the will come into effect within a month. It expressed its thanks to Washington for its support.

In recent past, Chinese incursions in Taiwan's Air Defence Zone (ADZ) have increased. Taiwan says that this was part of China's 'grey' warfare meant to put strain on Taiwan's defences.

"In view of the recent frequent activities of Chinese warships in the sea and airspace around our country, the ship parts that the United States has agreed to sell will help maintain the proper equipment and consumption of our naval ships and meet the actual needs of combat readiness tasks," said Taiwanese defence ministry.

Neither side gave details of the parts Taiwan would be receiving.

Most of Taiwan's main warships are US-made or designed.

US greenlights USD 120 million sale for Taiwanese warships

The head of the US Congressional Committee investigating deadly Capitol riots said that the attack was 'culmination of an attempted coup'. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the committee was speaking during public hearing that was widely broadcast Live across America during primetime on June 9.

The attack on US Capitol on January 6, 2021 was perpetrated by supporters of former US president Donald Trump after his sustained campaign that claimed that his defeat in US elections 2020 was a 'fraud'. Trump had addressed his supporters shortly before the attack. At the time of the attack, US lawmakers from both parties were certifying US President Joe Biden's victory. The attack caused evacuation of the building.

During his opening statement, House committee chairman Bennie Thompson warned that the conspiracy was not over.

"The conspiracy to thwart the will of the people is not over," he said.

"There are those in this country who thirst for power but have no love or respect for what makes America great: devotion to the Constitution, allegiance to the rule of law, our shared journey to build a more perfect Union." he said.

During the hearing, the committee offered first conclusions from a year-long probe into the assault -- and sought to outline a deep-rooted and ongoing plot to undermine the US Constitution and overturn Donald Trump's election defeat.

In coming days, the committee will reveal 'never before seen footage' related to the attack and make more details public.

Trump has defiantly dismissed the probe as a baseless "witch hunt" -- but the public hearings were clearly on his mind Thursday as he launched into a largely false tirade on his social media platform, defending the insurrection as "the greatest movement in the history of our Country to Make America Great Again."

The case the committee plans to make is that Trump laid the groundwork for the insurrection through months of lies about fraud in an election described by his own administration as the most secure ever.

US Capitol attack was an 'attempted coup', says investigating committee

China's US-born double gold medallist Eileen Gu said Tuesday that she will be an ambassador for Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics bid, sparking both anger and support on social media in China. Born in California to an American father and Chinese mother, the freestyle skier switched to represent China in 2019 and captured the hearts of the host nation at the Beijing Games in February.

But the 18-year-old, who won two golds and a silver, also drew scrutiny over her nationality. She repeatedly dodged questions about whether she had relinquished her American passport for a Chinese one.

Gu's status as the unofficial face of the Beijing Games also thrust her into the middle of tensions between Beijing and Washington. The teenager, who is set to study at Stanford, said Tuesday that she will serve as an ambassador for a US bid to host the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in the state of Utah.

"I think that's this beautiful example of globalism and of the capacity that we can use skiing and... winter sport to connect people," she said during an interview at a Time magazine event in New York. "Salt Lake specifically wants to become a global destination for athletes everywhere to come train there and they want to incorporate 15 new countries into the Winter Olympics," she added.

"I think that's something that's really beautiful... and so I'm really honored to be a part of the whole thing."

Gu also said that she did not regret swapping allegiances ahead of the Beijing Games. Her support for a US bid prompted mixed reactions on Chinese social media, where she quickly became one of the top trending topics on the Twitter-like Weibo platform.

Some questioned her motivation for competing for China. "Of course she doesn't regret representing China -- after all, in the last year alone she's earned enough money in China to last a lifetime," wrote one user, alluding to the numerous commercial deals she has with Chinese firms. "Turns out she's American after all," said another.

However, others were more supportive, with one popular comment praising her "international influence as a Chinese athlete". The United States led a handful of nations in staging a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Games over China's rights record, singling out its treatment of Muslim minorities in the northwestern Xinjiang region.

US President Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday a fresh USD 1.9 billion in private sector funding aimed at boosting jobs in hopes of reducing migration from Central America. The announcement was made at a Latin America summit in Los Angeles. Leaders of Mexico and other affected countries have snubbed the summit.

Tackling root causes of rising migration to the US has become a top priority for US President Joe Biden and the task has been handed to Harris.

Republican Party has seized upon the issue of migration. Donald Trump, former US president who was from Republican Party wanted to build a physical wall along southern border of the USA to deter migration.

At Latin America Summit in Los Angeles, Harris' unveiling of USD 1.9 billion in business commitments has come a day before President Biden is due to be present. The fresh funding is in addition to USD 1.2 billion announced last year.

The funding is aimed at creating economic opportunities in the impoverished so-called Northern Triangle of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

During her announcement, Harris also announced creation of "Central American Service Corps" funded through US aid to mentor young people

A White House statement said that the investments aim "to provide hope for people in the region to build safe and prosperous lives at home."

Interestingly, none of the Northern Triangle leaders are attending the summit. Mexican President Obrador is absent too But Prime Minister Ariel Henry of Haiti -- another rising source of migrants as the country further descends into violence -- will attend.

Mexican President Obrador is absent too But Prime Minister Ariel Henry of Haiti -- another rising source of migrants as the country further descends into violence -- will attend. US VP Kamala Harris announces USD 3.2 billion migration fund for Central American countries

US President Joe Biden heads Wednesday to a Latin America summit on a mission to woo back the region as his administration pushed out pledges, including a plan to train half a million health workers.

The long-awaited Summit of the Americas was marred by a boycott from Mexico's president, who was upset that Biden did not invite the leftist leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela on the grounds that they did not meet democratic standards.

The Biden administration insisted there were no hard feelings and moved forward on initiatives aimed at cementing ties across Latin America, where a rising China has increasingly made inroads despite the historic US influence.

Hours before Biden was to arrive, his administration announced a new Americas Health Corps that will aim to improve the skills of 500,000 health workers across the region, building on the lessons from Covid-19, which hit the Western Hemisphere especially hard.

The health training will cost $100 million, although the United States will not contribute all of it and will seek to raise funds, including through the Pan American Health Organization.

The pandemic "showed us the many cracks in our global health systems and underscored the importance of strong and resilient health systems for the entire population," a White House statement said.

China has stepped up its role in Latin America since the pandemic started, moving early to supply vaccines.

Cuba has also long exported its state-employed doctors, a practice that so infuriated the previous administration of Donald Trump that he suspended funding for the Pan American Health Organization over alleged ties.

The health announcement comes a day after Vice President Kamala Harris detailed another $1.9 billion in commitments by businesses to invest in impoverished and violence-ravaged El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The troubles in the so-called Northern Triangle, as well as Haiti, have generated a soaring number of migrants to the United States, setting off a domestic furor as Trump's Republican Party demands efforts to stop them.

"We know the American people will benefit from stable and prosperous neighbors. And when we provide economic opportunity for people in Central America, we address an important driver of migration," Harris said.

'Nearshoring'

Mauricio Claver-Carone, the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), said that Latin America can increasingly be seen as a "sea of peace" for investors amid the global turbulence from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and rising risks associated with manufacturing juggernaut China.

The head of the IADB, which provides development funding in Latin America, said he saw a rise of "nearshoring," with businesses moving closer to markets rather than in China.

Since the first Summit of the Americas in 1994, "each dollar that went to China was one dollar, one investment, one job less for Latin America and the Caribbean," he told AFP in an interview in Los Angeles.

In Latin America, "whether they are governments of the left or the right, they all want foreign investment, they all want nearshoring, they all want economic growth," he said.

The first summit, held in Miami by Bill Clinton, aimed to create a vast free-trade zone that would span the hemisphere other than communist Cuba.

Biden is holding only the second Summit of the Americas on US soil at a time that the political appetite for free trade has waned in Washington, with Trump rising to power in part by attacking trade liberalization as hurting workers.

But Biden has stood firm on another core principle of the Summit of the Americas -- democracy -- even as he considers going next month to Saudi Arabia, a critical oil supplier.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador insisted that all nations of the hemisphere should be included, a stance backed by several other regional leaders who nonetheless agreed to come.

Biden is separately expected to meet President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Latin America's most populous nation, despite rising fears that the Trump ally will not accept the legitimacy of upcoming elections.

Russia announces personal sanctions on 61 top US officials

In May 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 50 per cent higher than during the pre-industrial era, reaching levels not seen on Earth for about four million years, the main US climate agency said on Friday.

Global warming caused by humans, particularly through the production of electricity using fossil fuels, transport, the production of cement, or even deforestation, is responsible for the new high, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

May is usually the month with the highest carbon dioxide levels each year.

In May 2022, the threshold of 420 parts per million (ppm) -- a unit of measurement used to quantify pollution in the atmosphere -- was crossed.

In May 2021, the rate was 419 ppm, and in 2020, 417 ppm.

The measurements are taken at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii, ideally located high on a volcano, which allows it to escape the possible influence of local pollution.

Before the Industrial Revolution, levels of carbon dioxide held steady at around 280 ppm, a level maintained for approximately 6,000 years of human civilization that preceded industrialization, according to NOAA.

The level now is comparable to what it was between 4.1 and 4.5 million years ago when carbon dioxide levels were near or above 400 ppm, the agency said in a statement.

American tennis player Coco Gauff defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 in her semi-final match in the women's singles at the 2022 French Open, on Thursday (June 02), and used the platform to demand action on mass shootings in the United States by writing "peace, end gun violence" on a courtside TV camera.

Before sharing her message for gun control back at home, Gauff insisted that the recent tragedies mean she will treat victory or defeat with equal equanimity in the championship match, where she will face unstoppable and world number one Iga Swiatek. "Yeah it's a Grand Slam final but there are so many things going on in the world, especially in the U.S. -- I think it's not important to stress over a tennis match," she said during her on-court TV interview.

The 18-year-old Gauff was talking just hours following an incident where a gunman killed at least four people at a hospital building in Tulsa, Oklahoma, -- which is latest in a plethora of mass shootings across the United States in recent weeks which have made heads turn worldwide.

The incidents of gun violence in the US are not showing signs of stopping. Just days after the tragic shootout at a school in Texas and within hours of incidents of shooting in New York and Oklahoma, police and local media in Wisconsin said that a shooter wounded multiple during a funeral.

"At 2:26pm there were multiple shots fired at Graceland Cemetery. There are victims but unknown how many at this time. The scene is still active and being investigated," the Racine Police Department said on Twitter.

As per reports from the local media five people gathered for funeral were wounded. The funeral was for Da'Shontay L. King Sr, a man who was killed by police in March.

Gun violence is rampant in the US. Possession of guns is something that gets constitutional protection. Opponents of free availability of guns lobby for gun controls but gun rights supporters, mainly from the Republican Party oppose such moves politically.

The debate assumes national significance whenever there is mass shootout. But assertive opinions are expressed from both sides almost every time.

News agency AFP reported on Friday (June 3) that a cross-party group of US senators were in talks on a narrow package of firearms controls

Nine senators have been meeting this week to discuss a response to the mass shootings that have appalled the nation, projecting optimism over the prospects for modest reforms.

News agency AFP reported on Friday (June 3) that a cross-party group of US senators were in talks on a narrow package of firearms controls Nine senators have been meeting this week to discuss a response to the mass shootings that have appalled the nation, projecting optimism over the prospects for modest reforms. Wisconsin: Shooter wounds multiple people during a funeral

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) the US-backed side in the Syrian war said on Thursday that Turkey's plans of new offensive in Syria may create humanitarian crisis.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said that all sides involved in the conflict should "prevent any new tragedies and support de-escalation". He warned that a fresh attack would lead to more displacement in the 11-year-long conflict.

Turkey, which has mounted four operations in northern Syria since 2016, has vowed a new offensive against the Kurdish YPG militia, the spearhead of the SDF, which controls swathes of territory at the Turkish border.

Turkey considers the Kurdish forces in Syria to be terrorists and a threat to national security. On the other hand the US views SDF as an ally that has helped drive Islamic State from vast areas of Syria.

Turkey is one of several powers drawn into the war in Syria, where Russia backs the government.

Russia, expressing alarm, said it hoped Turkey "refrains from actions which could lead to a dangerous deterioration of the already difficult situation in Syria".

A foreign ministry spokeswoman told Interfax news agency that if Ankara launched an attack it would represent a direct violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and provoke further escalation of tension.

Washington, whose support for the SDF has long been a point of tension in ties with its NATO ally Turkey, has expressed concern, saying any new offensive would put at risk U.S. troops - which have a presence in Syria - and undermine regional stability.

On a visit to the Turkish town of Hatay near the Syrian border, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations reiterated US opposition to any military action.

"We think that nothing should be done to break the ceasefire lines that have already been established," Linda Thomas Greenfield said.

US-backed force in Syria warns against Turkish plans of new attack

The US said on Thursday (June 2) that it will back a European resolution urging Iran to cooperate with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog. USA's stand has come despite Iranian warnings that such a move would scuttle diplomcay. b

"We can confirm that we plan to join the UK, France and Germany in seeking a resolution focused on the need for Iran to fully cooperate with the IAEA," State Department spokesman Ned Price said ahead of a meeting next week.

"It is essential that Iran does fully comply with its legally binding obligations" under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," Price told reporters.

Talks to revive 2015 nuclear deal with Iran are in a stalemate. The deal, struck in 2015, put limitations on Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for relief from sanctions. Former US president Donald Trump took the US out of the deal and reimposed crippling sanctions on the Islamic republic.

President Joe Biden backs a return to the agreement and his administration has previously steered clear of condemning Iran at the IAEA, with the Europeans also backing down.

But the US negotiator on Iran has said that chances are dimming for an agreement despite more than a year of indirect talks.

The Biden administration has voiced willingness to remove sweeping sanctions imposed by Trump in exchange for Iran's returning to full compliance.

But Iran has also pressed for the removal of the clerical state's elite Revolutionary Guards from a terrorism blacklist, a step that Biden has rejected.

The latest IAEA report said Iran has not clarified questions about the presence of nuclear material found at three undeclared sites.

US to back IAEA resolution in spite of Iranian resistance

A gunman killed at least four people on a hospital campus in Tusla Oklahoma on Wednesday, according to police. The shootout has taken place as Americans are still grappling with one that took place in a school in Texas.

In the Oklahoma incident, the gunman was armed with a rifle. He was also killed in the incident. There was no immediate clarity on whether police killed him or the gunman killed himself.

"We can confirm 4 people are deceased, including the shooter, in the active shooting situation at St. Francis hospital campus. Officers are still clearing the building. More info to follow," Tulsa police tweeted from their official account earlier.

Earlier, police captain Richard Meulenberg said officers were treating the scene as "catastrophic," with "several" people shot and "multiple injuries."

White House said in a statement that US President Joe Biden had been briefed about the Tulsa shooting. The statement said that the administration has offered support to local officials.

The shooting is the latest in a string of deadly assaults by gunmen that have rocked the United States in the past month.

On May 14 a white supremacist targeting African Americans killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. The shooter survived and is facing charges.

Ten days later a gunman armed with an AR-15 burst into a school in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 21 people -- 19 of them young children -- before being shot dead by law enforcement.

Gun regulation faces deep resistance in the United States, from most Republicans and some rural-state Democrats.

Fresh shootout in US, gunman kills at least four in Oklahoma medical centre

Russia has claimed that US has biolabs in Nigerian cities that have been responsible for spread of monkeypox. Sputnik News quoted Igor Kirillov, chief of the Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defence Troops. Kirilov has reportedly published a news on Friday (May 27) in which he has made the allegations.

Kirilov reportedly noted WHO's conclusion of monkeypox having spread from Nigeria and said that US biolabs were responsible for it. In his briefing, he claimed that US biolabs were present in cities Abuja, Zaria and Lagos.

Lagos is capital of Nigeria.

The briefing urged World Health Organisation (WHO) to investigate the alleged US role in spreading monkeypox.

Need to act against monkeypox 'now': WHO

The WHO has said that if world acted quickly against monkeypox, it can be contained easily.

"We think that if we put in place the right measures now we probably can contain this easily," Sylvie Briand, WHO director for Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness, told the U.N. agency's annual assembly.

Till now, about 300 cases have been found in around 20 countries.

"For us, we think that the key priority currently is trying to contain this transmission in non-endemic countries," Briand told a technical briefing for member states.

Needed measures included the early detection and isolation of cases and contact tracing, she added.

A large number of states across the US are reeling from a heatwave that has seen above-average temperatures in at least a dozen states. The mercury is breaking records and it is estimated that about 130 heat records will be broken for temperatures at this time of the year.

The heatwave which previously affected states in the south and west of the country is now moving east. Temperatures are 20 to 30F above average in mid-Atlantic and north-east.

More than 120 million Americans are facing the heatwave. This has raised the spectre of health risks for vulnerable people and those who work outdoors. Even those who do not have access to indoor cooling are said to be at risk.

USA's National Weather Service has issued a special statement in light of the heatwave. It has cautioned citizens to remain on guard to observe any signs of heat illnesses among family. The NWS has recommended that people take breaks inside when possible and stay hydrated.

The heatwave has resulted in increased demand for power in some states.

On Thursday, power consumption in the state of Texas hit a monthly record on Thursday as consumers keep air conditioners cranked up to escape a lingering spring heatwave.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the grid for most of the state, said conditions were normal early Friday.

At the start of the current heat, ERCOT was forced to ask customers to conserve energy on May 13 after several power plants shut unexpectedly, causing real-time prices to soar to over $4,000 per megawatt hour (MWh).

Covid restrictions may be one of the reasons why North Korea was not giving any response to offers of diplomatic talks, said an unnamed US administration official quoted by Reuters.

This statement has come just a day after US President Joe Biden said that he had offered vaccines to North Korea.

Biden on Saturday said that America "got no response" from North Korea over its offer of vaccines. There is a spiralling epidemic in North Korea currently and 2.5 million people have fallen sick with "fever".

"We've offered vaccines, not only to North Korea but to China as well, and we're prepared to do that immediately," he said at a press conference in Seoul.

"We've got no response," he added.

Earlier this month, North Korea reported its first case of Omicron and despite a "maximum emergency" epidemic campaign, the virus has torn through its unvaccinated 25 million population.

On Saturday, North Korean state media reported nearly 2.5 million people had been sick with "fever", with 66 confirmed deaths since the outbreak started.

It added that the country had "intensified" its anti-epidemic campaign.

Biden and new South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed concern Saturday over North Korea's spiralling Covid-19 outbreak.

"The ROK and the US are willing to work with the international community to provide assistance to the DPRK to combat the virus," they said in a joint statement.

Yoon said the offer of aid was being made according to "humanitarian principles, separate from political and military issues" with Pyongyang.

Covid curbs may be why North Korea is mum on vaccine offer: US official

US President Joe Biden is due to meet South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol on Saturday in a first meet between the two leaders since the latter's inauguration 11 days ago. The talks are expected to be about North Korean nuclear threat and a political stalemate with the countrty. There are worries that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would carry out new nuclear tests.

Biden and Suk-Yeol are due to meet in South Korean capital Seoul. Inputs by US intelligence suggesting possible North Korean nuclear tests has cast shadow over talks between two leaders.

A senior Biden administration official told reporters on Saturday that the two leaders will discuss nuclear cooperation and that Washington remains ready for diplomacy with North Korea.

"It is very much our desire that we find ways to have a diplomatic approach," the official said. "We have made very clear we're prepared to talk to them, and with no preconditions, and we're also prepared to take steps to address their domestic challenges, including COVID."

It is yet unclear how the US and South Korea plan to engage the north. The Kim Jong-Un led country has rebuffed USA's engagement efforts since Biden took to office.

Yoon has signalled a tougher line on North Korea than his predecessor and is expected to ask for Biden's help. Yoon has warned of a preemptive strike if there is a sign of an imminent attack and vowed to strengthen the South's deterrent capability.

North Korea's first acknowledged COVID-19 outbreak, which the U.S. official described as "quite serious", may provide an opening.

"We are very concerned about the COVID situation," the official said. "We are very sensitive to the fact that they appear to be facing a quite serious situation, and I think you've seen we stand ready to work with others in the international community as needed to provide assistance."

North Korea reported more than 200,000 new patients suffering from fever for a fifth consecutive day on Saturday, but the country has little in the way of vaccines or modern treatment for the pandemic.

That has raised the prospect of a diplomatic opening as well as a humanitarian crisis or the prospect of deadlier new COVID variants, health officials have said.

Nuclear threat from North Korea looms large on US-South Korea meet in Seoul

Russian diplomats in Washington are being threatened with violence and US intelligence services try to make contact with them, Tass news agency cited the ambassador as saying on Saturday.

Anatoly Antonov told Russian television that since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, face-to-face meetings with U.S. officials had ended.

"It`s like a besieged fortress. Basically, our embassy is operating in a hostile environment ... Embassy employees are receiving threats, including threats of physical violence," Tass quoted him as saying.

"Agents from U.S. security services are hanging around outside the Russian embassy, handing out CIA and FBI phone numbers, which can be called to establish contact."

CIA and the FBI declined comment. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the US State Department did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

The Russian ambassador to Poland was doused in a red substance on Monday by people protesting against the war.

Russia and the United States had been locked in a dispute over the size and functioning of their respective diplomatic missions long before Russia invaded Ukraine.

Moscow expelled a number of U.S. diplomats in March after Washington said it was kicking out 12 Russian diplomats at the country`s U.N. mission in New York.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the US State Department did not immediately return messages seeking comment. It will be a busy week for Pakistani diplomacy as country's Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visits the US, China and Switzerland in the coming days. It is being considered to be a significant start to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's stint as foreign minister of Pakistan.

Sources say that Bhutto Zardari will visit the US between May 17 and May 19 at the invitation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He will participate in the Global Food Security Ministerial meet. He will also meet Blinken on the sidelines.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Aasim Iftikhar Ahmed confirmed that Pakistan will participate in the Global Food Security meeting in the United States on the 18th May. The confirmation came during the weekly briefing of the foreign office.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will meet Blinken on the heels of a furious anti-US narrative peddled and pushed by former prime minister Imran Khan.

The talks with Secretary Blinken would focus on enhancing bilateral trade ties, talks on Afghanistan. Discussions on overall situation in the region are likely to take place as well. Possible points of discussion may also include US role in India-Pakistan relations, the Kashmir issue as well as Pakistan's economic situation. There are talks of Pakistan facing default in a matter of weeks.

After returning from the United States on May 19, Pakistan’s foreign minister will dash to China in what will be his first-ever bilateral visit to any country after taking charge.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be visiting China at the invitation of his counterpart, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Two leaders recently held a virtual meeting.

In China, Bhutto Zardari’s focus would be on maintaining close bilateral ties, assurances of continuation and safety of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects and protection of mutual interests.

The China visit comes in the backdrop of a terrorist attack in Karachi in which three Chinese teachers were killed. Security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan has been a cause of concern for Chinese government.

The China visit would also focus on speeding up China-sponsored developmental projects in Pakistan and talks on a potential bailout along with cooperation on multilateral forums.

After his China visit, Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would be heading to Davos, Switzerland where he will be joining Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation as they participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Sources say that on the sidelines of the 4 day meeting of the WEF, Pakistani foreign minister will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other countries and will return to Pakistan on 25th of May, accompanying Pakistan PM.

US Republican Party lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene has made a tweet that has attracted a lot of attention. In her tweet, Taylor Greene lamented that West made a mistake in "not keeping India close". She even called Washington "arrogant".

After India and Pakistan became independent in 1947, both nations got pushed into opposing camps during the Cold War. Pakistan found a supporter in the US while Soviet Russia backed India. There were assumptions in the western sphere that India, a country of literally a thousand cultures was ripe to get balkanised and formation of several mini-countries was something that was inevitable.

Republican lawmaker: US should've made India bulwark against China, but all it got are tech CEOs

US lawmakers on Tuesday were set to begin debate on USD 40 billion aid package for Ukraine amid Russian invasion. The US warned that Russia was likely preparing for a long conflict in Ukraine.

It is expected that defense, humanitarian and economic funding will be passed comfortably.

"This is a large package but the need is great and time is of the essence... The president has called on both chambers of Congress to act quickly on the Ukrainian aid package, so act quickly we must," Chuck Schumer, who leads the Senate Democratic majority, said on the floor.

Leaders in US Congress on Monday struck a deal to release $6.8 billion more than the $33 billion previously requested by the White House to help the Eastern European nation ward off Moscow's invasion.

The financial boost will include extra USD 3.4 billion for military and humanitarian assistance.

If the package passes as planned, US spending to bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russia's invasion and address the ensuing humanitarian crisis will soar to around $54 billion.

The action comes as a top US official warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for a long war that may not end with Russian victory in the east.

"We assess President Putin is preparing for prolonged conflict in Ukraine during which he still intends to achieve goals beyond the Donbas," Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said at a hearing on Capitol Hill.

She added that Putin was counting on US and EU resolve to weaken as the conflict continues to cause food shortages and inflation, including spiraling energy prices.

The US Supreme Court rekindled America's decades-long struggle over abortion rights on Tuesday, confirming that a leaked draft opinion indicating that a majority of the nine justices would soon repeal the right was genuine.

The 1973 decision was regarded as "egregiously erroneous from the outset" in the document made by Justice Samuel Alito.

As Democrats in Washington and statehouses hurried to devise a response to safeguard a privilege that women in the United States have held for nearly half a century, President Joe Biden slammed the expected move as "extreme."

'Off our bodies': Abortion-rights protesters rally in US, spurred by draft Supreme Court opinion

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday urged Americans to defend access to abortion. His appeal came after a leaked draft opinion of the US Supreme Court showed that majority of the conservative-dominated court was of the opinion to end nationwide right and access to abortion.

Biden warned that if such a verdict was delivered it may lead to widespread changes in American law as "every other decision relating to the notion of privacy is thrown into question."

If the ruling is finalized, abortion laws will depend on individual states and "it will fall on voters to elect" officials who back the right to the procedure, Biden said after the ruling was leaked.

"If this decision holds, it's really quite a radical decision," Biden told reporters in Washington as he departed on a trip to Alabama. "It's a fundamental shift in American jurisprudence."

"I believe that a woman's right to choose is fundamental," Biden said, referring to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v Wade that declared abortion a constitutionally protected right.

Biden also called on Congress to enshrine legal abortion in US law. It is the only way of overcoming any Supreme Court ruling that the document apparently shows is set to be issued.

It is clear by now that the leaked Supreme Court draft is authentic. This has been confirmed US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

The Morgan Stanley spokesperson said the bank was continuing to cooperate with German authorities.
