Over eight million Thermos bottles and jars have been recalled over a defect that can cause them to forcefully eject, injuring people in the face and eyes. Nearly two dozen injuries have been reported till now, including those who suffered permanent blindness because of the product. The recall was announced last week by Thermos LLC in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Notably, the problem is with 5.8 million food jars and 2.5 million bottles sold in the United States between 2008 and 2024. The defect is because of a vital mechanism that is missing in the stopper. This is causing the lids to open without any human intervention, catching the user off guard and injuring them. The recalled products include two models of the Thermos Stainless King food jar (numbers SK3000 and SK30020) and one model of the Sportsman food and beverage bottle (SK3010). You can check the numbers on the bottom of the bottles and jars.
What is the issue with Thermos products?
The issue with the products is the absence of a pressure relief mechanism in the middle of the stopper. In the absence of this part, pressure has been building up in jars and bottles containing food items for long periods of time, the company said. This has led to the stopper and the built-up pressure being released with dangerous force, hitting people. The company said that they know about at least 27 cases where Thermos products hit people in the face, causing serious injuries that had to be treated by a doctor. Three of them lost their eyesight after being hit in the eye.
How to get replacement for Thermos?
People have been urged to stop using these products with immediate effect. Those using Stainless King food jars can reach out to Thermos for a new functional stopper, while others with a Sportsman bottle will be given a new model bottle. The food jar stopper should be disposed of after taking a photo for replacement purposes. Sportsman customers will need to send their bottles to the company.

Thermos is recalling two defective products that continued to be sold for over 16 years due to reports that they have caused permanent vision loss in consumers. The absence of a key component is leading them to open on their own, hitting people in the faces and eyes.

Doctors have flagged a strange pattern in blood donation requests in America, revealing that people are refusing to accept blood from vaccinated donors. Data from the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Tennessee from the past two years shows that the number of people requesting non-anonymous, or directed, blood donations rose significantly over the past two years. The reason is they do not want blood from people who have taken vaccines, especially those immunised against COVID-19. The vaccines against the virus have been dubbed by several people, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, as dangerous. The anti-vaccination movement saw a resurgence after the public was pushed to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at the height of the pandemic. People took to the streets to protest when the government and the private sector used administrative mandates and incentives to make vaccination a requirement to be able to carry out regular activities, personally and professionally. Advocates have claimed that the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are unsafe for human health, despite the absence of proof. This has contributed to people saying no to blood from anonymous donors and asking for directed blood, where the family can choose specific individuals to donate blood. The study published in the journal Transfusion in March has warned that "despite being framed as ‘safer,’ directed donations may paradoxically increase risk." Blood donation is one area where the anti-vaxxer movement is becoming quite visible, which is happening by refusing vaccinated blood. There is no evidence to show that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 can create a new disease in the body or alter your blood or DNA. Blood donation centres do not test against something like this, although they ensure that the donated blood is safe for transfusion. Also Read: Shake off the pain? In each case, the request was not made because of a rare blood type issue, but because they were worried about getting vaccinated blood. The number increased from four in 2024 to 11 in 2025. In two cases, surgery had to be delayed or rescheduled. Directed blood often comes from first-time donors, and researchers say they are at risk of carrying infectious diseases. Blood centres also have to irradiate blood from family members to prevent immune-related complications. Scientists are concerned that such requests could increase in the future as people might soon be able to legally demand unvaccinated blood.

While blood scarcity has turned into a silent crisis globally, people in America are putting conditions on the kind of blood they would accept. Demand for unvaccinated blood in the country has seen a spike, and people could soon legally demand such blood.

A helicopter suddenly spun and crashed into trees near Timber Lakes, Utah, on January 18, and all four aboard miraculously survived. However, one of them was left critically injured and rushed to the hospital. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of a head injury. Reports suggest that the crash happened because of Loss of Tail Rotor Effectiveness (LTE), a low-altitude failure where the tail rotor loses thrust against main rotor torque. It is said to be the primary reason for 60-70 per cent of pilot-error helicopter accidents, according to rotorcraft studies. Ground footage captured by snowmobilers shows the chopper spinning rapidly. American actor David Sparks said one of his friends, Derek, and three others were on board the helicopter. “This is my friend Derek, and I'm beyond grateful that he and the 3 other souls on board survived what was a truly terrifying accident.” He detailed what went wrong with the chopper. “What you're seeing here appears consistent with LTE (Loss of Tail Rotor Effectiveness), when the tail rotor can't produce enough authority (thrust) to counter the torque of the main rotor, and the aircraft can enter a rapid, uncontrollable yaw/spin…” he said. Sparks added that Derek was in "a worst-case scenario, with almost no time to react." The helicopter got stuck in the trees, which apparently slowed the fall, absorbing the energy. This is believed to be the reason why the accident was not life-threatening.Also Read: Russia’s ‘snow apocalypse’ takes over social media: Locals jump out of windows, dig out building entrances

Utah crash involved a Bell 206 helicopter
The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:10 pm. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. The agency added that it was a Bell 206 helicopter. While one of the occupants was taken to the hospital, the other three were evaluated on the site. The crash was captured on camera from several angles, showing the helicopter spinning out of control. According to eyewitnesses, there were two helicopters. A smaller one landed first, while the Bell 206 circled above. It descended, hovered and lifted again, and then started spinning and crashed into the trees.

US aviation authorities on Friday issued fresh warnings to airlines operating over parts of Mexico and Central America, urging crews to "exercise caution" amid what they described as ongoing "military activities" in the region.
FAA flags risk to navigation systems
The Federal Aviation Administration posted a series of notices cautioning about a "potentially hazardous situation," while citing the chance for interference to the Global Navigation Satellite System, a critical tool for modern aircraft navigation. On January 3, American special forces carried out a raid and airstrike that led to the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken into custody to face drug trafficking and other charges. Unusual scenes unfolded at a Senate hearing in the United States over abortion pills after a question was asked fourteen times without a straight answer. Republican Senator Josh Hawley kept on pushing for a yes or no answer to the priced question "Whether men can get pregnant?” The sharp exchange between the senator and the doctor became viral across social platform sparking widespread interest and response. An Indian-origin doctor, Nisha Verma, was at the center controversy, who was testifying before a Senate Health, Education, Labour and Pension (HELP) committee hearing on the issue of the safety and regulation of the abortion pill 'mifepristone.' The committee is looking into whether abortion pills could be misused, including cases where men might get hold of them and pressure women into ending pregnancies. During the hearing, when Hawley posed a direct question 'can men get pregnant?" Verma refused to provide a straight answer, saying “how the conversation was going or what the goal was,” adding that she provides treatments to patients with different identities. Hawley pushed further by accusing her of avoiding the fact that biological men do not get pregnant. Verma replied, “Science and evidence should guide medicine. But I also think yes or no questions like this are political tools.”

With less than six months to go for the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, questions are still being raised on the participation of certain teams, such as the USA, one of three hosts, which continues to ban citizens from certain countries. Packets of Chinese seeds are slipping into the US and reaching the doorsteps of farmers, and the officials have warned that they can "devastate" agriculture in the country if they are even opened. Most of these mysterious packages were reported from Texas, with 126 on record since January 1. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said that the packets might look "innocent, but the danger is real." Farmers have been told not to open the packets and report them. Similar Chinese see packets poured into the country in 2020, but Miller says this time they are coming in faster than before and spreading quickly. Most of them have reached East Texas, but cases have also been reported from other parts, from Florida to New Mexico. “One invasive species, pest, or pathogen could devastate Texas farms, ranches, natural resources, and food supply. We cannot gamble with Texas agriculture,” Miller said, asking everyone to remain vigilant. Most of these packets are clear, while some carry Chinese labels. They show up at the doorsteps directly. A UK couple, who were in the US for a performance while the woman was 33 weeks pregnant, received a terrible shock when they were handed a $200,000 medical bill following a premature delivery. Folk duo Issy Ferris and Archie Sylvester had travelled to Nashville for a tour. During their second last show, Issy started feeling sick. She was throwing up and assumed that it was because of food poisoning. However, she was suffering from pre-eclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication, but was unaware. This meant that her baby had to be delivered via emergency C-section, as it could prove deadly to the mother and the baby. She was taken to the hospital, where she gave birth to a baby boy. However, they could not believe the bills they were handed that totalled to a whopping $200,000. The couple tried using their travel insurance to cover the bills, but the agency declined. After months of legal hassle, the insurance company finally paid the medical expenses.
Issy fell sick during the concert
Issy was supposed to go on maternity leave after the show in the US. The couple had chosen a top travel insurance plan but had not imagined something like this happening. Issy was 25 at the time and says that when she fell sick during the concert, she was in denial. A massive storm struck Colorado last week, disrupting more than a dozen atomic clocks and altering the US official time standard. Now the country is running 4.8 microseconds behind the world. These atomic clocks are located at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder. Hurricane-force winds swept the state recently, hitting trees and electricity infrastructure. This posed a risk of fire, and so the state's largest energy company implemented safety shutdowns. But the atomic clocks continued ticking, thanks to the battery backup systems. However, a backup generator at NIST failed, causing a snap in operations and slowing down NIST coordinated universal time, or UTC (NIST), by 4.8 microseconds. Notably, NIST coordinated universal time, or UTC(NIST), determines the official time in the US. It is different from the other UTC used for the global time standard.
The minor time error can have huge implications
NIST supervisory research physicist Jeff Sherman described the time gap as "both big and small." He told Joe Hernandez at NPR, “All of the atomic clocks, a mix of hydrogen masers and caesium beam, continued ticking through the power outage last week, thanks to their battery backup systems. What failed was the connection between some of the clocks and NIST's measurement and distribution systems." This meant that the Boulder Internet Time Services no longer had an accurate time reference. A time difference of 4.8 microseconds might not seem much, but Sherman cautioned that it can affect crucial systems, such as infrastructure, telecommunications, GPS signals, and other things.
How is American time determined?
NIST has been America's official timekeeper since 2007. Of the 20 atomic clocks at the NIST laboratory that operate in rotation, 10 to 15 are working at any time to determine the US national time. Primary and alternate multi-channel measurement systems (MCMS) regularly monitor these clocks to quickly detect any changes in frequency. This data is fed into a computer algorithm, which, in addition to other machines, decides the exact US time. This figure works towards the world's time standards as well. Power has been restored at the facility, and assessments and repair work are being done.

A breakthrough came in March this year, when the US Department of Energy granted regulatory clearance to an American company to design and build nuclear reactors in India.

SHANTI stands for the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, 2025, which Parliament passed last week.

A man in Pennsylvania says he was shot by his dog after he put the gun down following a cleaning. The freak accident landed him in the hospital for surgery. The unnamed man from Shillington says that he has put down his shotgun on the bed after a cleaning. Just as he sat down, his dog pounced on him, apparently setting off the gun. The man was struck by a bullet in his lower back. Shillington Police Cpl. Michael Schoone told WFMZ that it’s not exactly clear what happened and how the dog was involved. The 53-year-old blames his dog for the accident, having told the police that he “jumped up onto the bed, causing the shotgun to go off, which ultimately struck him." A woman born without a brain in Nebraska celebrated her 20th birthday recently. At birth, the doctors said that she wouldn't live past the age of four, but she defied all odds and proved them wrong. Alex Simpson of Omaha is afflicted by a rare condition known as hydranencephaly. Shawn and Lorena Simpson spoke with local news outlet KETV News about their daughter's medical issue, saying, "[Hydranencephaly] means that her brain is not there." Shawn added, "Technically, she has about half the size of my pinky finger of her cerebellum in the back part of her brain, but that's all that's there." He said that the doctors told them she won't live past the age of four. Talking about the reason that helped her prove everyone wrong, they said love is what has helped her live so much longer than expected. This is when Alex can't see or hear her parents. Shawn said her eye movements can tell that she is looking for them. “You can see that when I went up there and talked to her a little bit ago, she was looking for me,” he told the outlet. After the doctors told them about her condition, the parents feared for her. They didn't know what to do, but faith kept them going. “Twenty years ago, we were scared, but faith, I think, is really what kept us alive," he said. “She’s a fighter,” Lorena added. Alex has a 14-year-old brother, SJ, who says he is proud to have a daughter like Alex. “When people ask about my family, the first thing I start with is Alex, my disabled sister,” he said. He also believes that Alex has a way to know what's going on around her. SJ added that when someone is stressed and no one talks about it around her, she can still sense it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, hydranencephaly occurs in one in 5,000 to one in 10,000 pregnancies, and most of them don't live beyond the first year of their life.

A father who left his two-year-old daughter in the car while he had beers and watched porn has died by suicide. Christopher Scholtes took the extreme step just hours before he was due to report to prison ahead of his sentencing, local media reports suggested. The 38-year-old had pleaded guilty to the death of his youngest daughter, Parker, as part of a plea deal in Pima County Superior Court last month. He was listed as deceased by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office in Arizona on Wednesday. He killed himself in his plush $1 million mansion in Arizona on Wednesday morning, although how he did it is not known. Scholtes left his toddler daughter in the car as she took a nap in the backseat of their Acura, parked on the driveway in July 2024. Meanwhile, he went inside the home, played video games, watched porn and drank beer for more than three hours. He had left the car running with the air conditioning switched on. Scholtes lost track of time and continued to have a gala time while the car engine switched off. Parker died in the hot car. The Pima County Medical Examiner said the temperature inside the car was 108.9°F when first responders arrived. Scholtes was to be jailed for 20 to 30 years without parole. But he was permitted to be out on bail until Wednesday, but he killed himself before he could go to jail. Pima County prosecutors were visibly shaken by the incident at the court hearing, and said they will soon provide more details.
The father regularly left his kids in the car
His wife, anesthesiologist Erika Scholtes, had spent $1.025 million on a four-bedroom house where they shifted following Parker's death. She worked at the Banner University Medical Centre where Parker was taken to. Erika defended her husband in court, saying that what happened was a mistake. According to the prosecutors, texts between Scholtes and Erika revealed that he habitually left their children in the car for extended periods. Their nine and five-year-old daughters told the police that their father regularly left them in the car. Security footage showed that Scholtes also left Parker alone in the car on the same day as he shopped at a gas station and a supermarket. He shoplifted beer from both shops, according to the documents. He reached home at 12.53 pm, but told the police that he had come at 2:30. When Erika came home at 4, she asked about Parker. That's when he realised his mistake and rushed to get her. First responders arrived, and she died an hour later at the hospital. Court documents show that he searched the internet for men's clothing at Nordstrom and for pornography from 2.02 pm to 2.30 pm.

Americans are reporting spotting balloons flying at extremely high altitudes, triggering fear that the spy vehicles are back in the skies. In 2023, a Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina. It entered US airspace over Alaska in January and flew over a US military base in Montana before being shot down. The balloons are reportedly back to haunt Americans who have reported seeing them in Colorado, Arizona and Alabama, Daily Mail reported. People believe these are also surveillance balloons and could be bad news for the government. Residents in these states have posted pictures and videos of these balloons on social media, asking if someone can identify them. Speculations range from a regular American research operation to new Chinese spy balloons. The latest sighting came two weeks ago in Arizona, where a mysterious balloon was seen flying over Lemmon. People posted pictures and videos of the balloon on social media. Some of them tried tracking it on flight monitoring apps but failed to find any data. "Not showing on Flightradar24, though, like others have in weeks past," a Reddit user posted. In June, multiple high-altitude balloons were seen over the Tucson and Sierra Vista areas for more than a week. People started panicking at the sight, wondering what the balloons were doing. According to witnesses, these balloons fly at over 60,000 feet. Also Read: ET is not interested - Earth holds no appeal to aliens, NASA scientist puts forward 'boredom' theoryAlso Read: 'I'm here to warn you' - Pastor claims 'ship with demonic spirits' is coming for Earth.
Most of these balloons turned out to be linked to the American government
Some of these balloons later turned out to be part of some American government programme. In Tucson, Arizona, similar balloons were seen several times. People thought that it was a spy balloon that was equipped with a "spy camera platform from China" and "transmitting military secrets in fast bursts." However, it was later revealed that one of them was part of a US military test. But this triggered debate over privacy evasion, with experts questioning what kind of data the American government was collecting. One of the balloons seen in Boulder, Colorado, was identified as an Aerostar Thunderhead steerable balloon. A Reddit user explained that, "It's not just a weather balloon", but can carry "signal-gathering equipment, communications equipment, or other sensors." The company develops balloons for scientific research, telecommunications and military applications, and confirmed that some of the balloons belonged to them. While such balloons are common, scientists say, the general public is likely to fear them since they wouldn't know what they are.

After rabbits and squirrels, deer in several parts of the US have been seen with tumour-like warts on their bodies. People have reported seeing the mutated creatures and taken photos as proof. Officials have warned residents to stay away from these animals, as this might cause health issues. The creatures have been spotted from the Northeast to the Pacific Northwest. Images of the affected creatures on social media show tumour-like growth on the entire body of the deer that have been seen in New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. While the rabbits are infected by the cottontail papilloma virus (CRPV), the deer are also affected by a similar papilloma virus called the deer cutaneous fibroma, or deer warts. A death row prisoner in Arkansas is pleading with authorities to kill him as soon as possible. He doesn't care what the method of execution is and is even ready to be put to death by a firing squad or in an electric chair. However, his death pleas are not being met because 10 other inmates are against the execution method that will be used. They have filed a lawsuit against Arkansas for its use of nitrogen hypoxia for execution after its new authorisation went into effect on August 5. Scotty Gardner was given the death sentence in 2018 for strangling his girlfriend with a curling iron cord and stealing her things to gamble at a casino. Before that, he repeatedly shot his pregnant ex-wife in 1990 and served time for attempted murder. Now, Gardner is urging officials for swift death because of his shoddy living conditions. Arkansas has not executed anyone since 2017. Rabbits in the United States are developing strange tentacles on top of their heads that look like horns. People are being warned not to touch them as this is happening because of a virus. It is causing a mutation which is triggering the growth of these so-called horns in these rabbits, which are actually tumours. Over the past year, several of these "Frankenstein" rabbits have been seen in Fort Collins, Colorado. Last year, a photo on social media showed a rabbit with black spikes growing from its face. A woman told 9News that she came across a rabbit with a growth that appeared like "black quills or black toothpicks sticking out all around its mouth." The reason for this unusual growth is the cottontail papilloma virus (CRPV), also known as Shope papilloma virus, which is triggering tumours to grow on their face and near the mouth. The dead body of a missing North Carolina teen was discovered in a retention pond off I-75 in Florida after he went there to meet his estranged father. Giovanni Pelletier had vanished after sending his mother a message - “Mom, help.” His decomposed remains were found on Friday and were formally identified Saturday afternoon, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The 18-year-old's mother is angry because authorities in charge of the investigation had said that they had already checked the swampy area where Pelletier was later found. A private investigation company that was also working on the case made the discovery. A probe into his death is still on. “My son was recently found after a desperate search by our family alone, and we are still facing an active investigation into his death,” Bridgette Pelletier wrote on Facebook. “I am living every parent’s worst nightmare, trying to find the strength to give him the goodbye he deserves," she added. Also Read: Brazilian journalist stumbles upon same missing girl's dead body whose story he was reporting. A former US trade official said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump's announcement of additional tariffs will impact most of India's exports to the United States. Dangerous sea creatures that can leave your skin burning for hours are washing ashore on US beaches. People are being warned not to touch them if they wish to avoid the sting of hundreds of bristles filled with a poisonous substance. Experts say it is a toxic species of marine fireworm, known as Amphinome rostrata, which has been spotted on the shores of Corpus Christi in Texas. They are bright in colour, but under no circumstances should one approach them. They are aptly named fireworms because of the sting they deliver. Jace Tunnell, director of community engagement at the Harte Research Institute, was the first to encounter them and immediately alerted the rest. Warning about the creepy creatures, Tunnell said that a single contact "feels like fire for about three hours." The marine fireworms are around 7.5 inches long and packed with hundreds of sharp spikes, which are not clearly visible to the human eye. Upon contact, the bristle breaks off and embeds itself into the skin of the victim. Even one tiny needle-like bristle can deliver a powerful dose of neurotoxins, giving the sensation that the skin is on fire. The burning sensation leads to hours-long pain, and also causes dizziness, nausea, and skin irritation. Experts say this happens because the toxins released by the needle into the human body interfere with the nervous system. Killing them is also not foolproof. If a fireworm is slashed into two, it can regrow its body. Tunnell says that he has personally experienced the feeling of being on fire as several of these have embedded into his skin in the past. However, some people might feel only a mild sensation, but that might not be true for the majority.
