The United States has announced that it plans to restore Air India's ability to self-conduct its ground handling operations at American airports.

The Department and other US government agencies have continued to work with the government of India towards satisfactory resolution of this matter. In that connection, recent positive developments have led the department to tentatively determine that the public interest now calls for removal of the permit condition we had imposed in order 2019-7-9, said the order issued by Joel Szabat, Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Aviation and International Affairs.

"We therefore have tentatively decided to amend Air India's permit to remove that condition," the Department of Transportation said.

Stakeholders and public have 21 days to respond to this proposal, before it can be finalised and enforced.

The order comes a day after the Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, had a conversation with the Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

"India and the US have partnered in Aviation sector during these difficult times," the ambassador tweeted.

The order also relieves Air India of any further reporting requirement regarding its ground handling arrangements.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping congratulated Lukashenko, who is in power for decades.

The US State Department has issued a report saying the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not break any rules by conducting an arms sales with Saudi Arabia.

A final report was issued on Monday by the US State Department. The report was concluded by the State Department's Acting Inspector General Diana Shaw.

The report investigated Pompeo's actions of declaring a "national emergency" to justify a $8 billion in military sales to the Gulf Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia, despite congressional objections.

The Inspector General, who has followed several others in this position, has declared that there was no wrong-doing in Pompeo's decision — a decision the Trump administration wanted to hear.

Earlier in May, then-Inspector General Steve Linick was abruptly fired by US President Donald Trump while he was investigating Pompeo.

Linick was was succeeded by Stephen Akard, who resigned from his post last week after recusing himself from the arms sales investigation.

The investigation then fell on Diana Shaw, who was Stephen's Akard's Deputy, and is now serving as the Acting Inspector General.

Linick and Akard are not the only ones who have had to leave their post mid-term. The frequent change in the position of Inspector general has raised concerns for the Democrats, and even some of the Republican colleagues of the President.

Representative Eliot Engel, the Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee said he is worried that the report was discussed internally before being released publically.

"The people briefing the press were the subjects of the IG’s probe, not the report’s authors. This obvious pre-spin of the findings reeks of an attempt to distract and mislead," Engel said.

While Pompeo has been declared non-guilty, the focus now is on the investigation of Linick's abrupt termination from his role as an IG.

In less than 90 days, the United States will go for the presidential election and the lawmakers are going all out to secure votes.

And like any other presidential election in the country, a special focus is on the Indian American voters.

Both Democrats and Republicans are reaching out to Indians and making special promises to win their report.

Also read | Black Lives Matter movement takes political colour as US elections near

Let's understand how Democrats and Republicans are trying to lure these voters.

Democrats in favour of H-1B

The Democrats want to hit US President Donald Trump where it hurts the most and that is why they picked up the issue of H-1B vias.

Trump has put a freeze on them and the Democrats have promised to bring it back.

The Democrats say Trump's visa freeze is illegal, chaotic and reckless and believes that programs like H-1B help the American economy.

Out of 65 thousand such visas allotted each year, almost 70 per cent is given to Indians, making them the largest beneficiaries.

Republicans selling the golden ticket

The Republicans, on the other hand, are selling Indians the golden ticket to America: the green card.

Senator Mike Lee has raised the issue in the US Congress. He was arguing in favour of removing the cap.

Lee said that the limits on the green card punish the Indian immigrants.

"If you are born anywhere else, anywhere else other than China, let's say in Ghana, Sweden, Indonesia, basically any other country other than India, your application will be considered immediately. This sort of discrimination is simply inconsistent with the principles of a merit-based immigration system and with our founding principles," Lee said.

He said that the green card waitlist for Indians runs into 200 years.

This argument is true as for many Indians, the green card queue may last longer than their lifetimes.

Currently, only 140,000 green cards are issued every year. More than 200,000 Indians have filed petitions for permanent residency in the US.

Skilled Indian workers make up 75 per cent of the backlog.

Over 700,000 of them are in the line of march, suggesting it's a broken system.

As of 2016, there were over four million people of Indian origin in the US, out of this, close to 1.8 million are of voting age.

This suggests that Indians is the third-largest block of voters within the Asian community alone.

The issue of visas is dear to this community as well as to the New Delhi-Washington relations.

So it's not a surprise anymore that Indian Americans will get special attention in the elections this year.

The United States President Donald Trump has once again argued in favour of opening nation's schools, saying most parts of the US is "doing well".

The US is the world's hardest-hit country by far, and there has been a huge debate on whether the schools be reopened.

On July 25, the US's top health body has advised the reopening schools and issued a set of guidelines to implement the measure.

"We owe it to our nation's children to take personal responsibility to do everything we can to lower the levels of COVID-19, so they can go back to school safely," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chief Robert Redfield had said.

Experts are divided when it comes to this issue, with some saying the risk of children contracting COVID-19 is low and insisting going to schools will lead to the betterment of mental health and social development.

However, some children have developed what doctors are describing as multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) after exposure to coronavirus.

Republican senator Tom Cotton, who is seen as a potential presidential candidate for 2024 US elections, described slavery as a "necessary evil" to slam an initiative by a leading US daily.

"As the Founding Fathers said, it was the necessary evil upon which the union was built, but the union was built in a way, as Lincoln said, to put slavery on the course to its ultimate extinction," Cotton, in an interview with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette published on Sunday.

Cotton made the remarks against the New York Times 1619 Project, an initiative to reframe US history from around August 1619, when the slave ships were first arrived on the American soil.

On Thursday, Cotton introduced a legislation that aims to cut off federal money to teach 1619 Project in primary and secondary schools.

In the interview, Cotton also said the history of slavery, its impact and role should be studied on the basis of the "development of our country", adding otherwise we can't "understand our country".

He also said the 1619 Project calls US "at root, a systematically racist country to the core and irredeemable. I reject that root and branch."

When the news broke out, Cotton called it "fake" and argued that his comments were referring to the founders of the US.

Also read | Trump's war against American voters could cost him reelection On Thursday, Cotton introduced a legislation that aims to cut off federal money to teach 1619 Project in primary and secondary schools. In the interview, Cotton also said the history of slavery, its impact and role should be studied on the basis of the "development of our country", adding otherwise we can't "understand our country". He also said the 1619 Project calls US "at root, a systematically racist country to the core and irredeemable. I reject that root and branch." When the news broke out, Cotton called it "fake" and argued that his comments were referring to the founders of the US. This is the definition of fake news. I said that *the Founders viewed slavery as a necessary evil* and described how they put the evil institution on the path to extinction, a point frequently made by Lincoln. https://t.co/SaWTTlMO7w — Tom Cotton (@TomCottonAR) July 26, 2020 × "I said that *the Founders viewed slavery as a necessary evil*," Cotton wrote on Twitter.

The Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler is standing alongside the protesters.

The mayor, who is also a Democrat and is conducting regular "listening sessions" for the protesters, was tear-gassed too along with the demonstrators.

Wheeler was seen coughing, but still, he couldn't win the support of protesters as they believe he was only there for cameras.

Over the recent weeks, the White House is only focussing on incidents of crime and not on the cause of protests.

For Trump, every protester is either a criminal, a political tool, a left-radical or a terrorist. But when it comes to racial discrimination and police brutality, he deflects all questions.

A similar strategy is followed by the US president every time he was asked about his response to the pandemic.

However, now he has had a change of heart, at least as far as the coronavirus outbreak is concerned.

He no longer considers coronavirus as just a flu. He wears a mask wherever he goes,

"Wear it in the hospital. Weat it when you're in a group. Wear it in the elevator. Wear it when there are people around." Trump said.

Trump took six months to say this, however, better late than never.

Imagine yourself walking on a sidewalk in Los Angeles, US and coming across a nice refrigerator stored with milk, fruit, vegetables, chicken, and other items which can be taken for free.

The idea looks crazy but you will find several of these "community refrigerators" in Los Angeles, which are placed outside to help the needy and the people who are hard hit economically because of the pandemic.

"If you need to empty the fridge, no one will judge you. If you need to take one tomato, or you only put one tomato in there, do it," Marina Vergara, an organiser for LA Community Fridges, said, reported AFP.

Vergara, whose initiative has set up seven such appliances, adds that that the concept came to make "this kind of aid more accessible".

New York came up with the idea of these kind of fridges which can be used any time of the day and people could either take or donate food.

The fridges are creatively painted and some people also put shoes and clothing inside them.

California was amongst the first states to impose lockdown to prevent the virus spread, but in recent weeks, the state is witnessing huge infections, particularly in Los Angeles county.

Los Angeles has also very high levels of homelessness and economic woes brought in by the coronavirus pandemic has added insult to the injury.

Vergara, who started this initiative with an organisation called Reach for the Top, which helps the homeless, explained how some people are ashamed to go to food banks and added immigrants fear doing them increase risk of deportation.

"In a lot of communities, it strips away your pride," Vergara said, who aims to set up more of these refrigerators.

She believes her efforts bring "the freedom of being able to go to a community fridge at any time, whether it's five in the morning or five in the evening."

US President Donald Trump has found a new addiction, apart from Twitter.

It's called Goya and the US president just loves it.

But what is Goya? It is a hispanic-owned company that sells food products in the United States and many hispanic countries. Its propular product includes a can of black beans, which Trump likes a lot.

What's behind Donald Trump's recent love affair with Goya

China's top businessmen and entrepreneurs, including Alibaba (BABA) founder Jack Ma, could face serious consequences if the Trump administration decides to ban all members of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from entering their nation.

Earlier a report said US could impose a travel ban that could potentially affect more than 90 million people from China.

Several wealthy businessmen from China, like Dalian Wanda Group founder Wang Jianlin and BYD founder Wang Chuanfu could be impacted from this ban as they all are members of the Communist Party.

While Wanda, owns the world's biggest movie theater chain, AMC, Chuanfu-founded BYD is China's leading e-car company.

"China's rich and powerful are almost all party members," Willy Lam, adjunct professor at the Center for China Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said, reported CNN.

A study published last year revealed more than half of 8,000 entrepreneurs surveyed said they were the members of the CCP.

Also, a ban like this this could create serious hurdles for Chinese businesses as many trade on the stock exchanges in the US.

Chinese foreign ministry on Thursday said such ban if implemented would be "pathetic".

The relations between Beijing and Washington hit rock-bottom after they ended a long trade tussle, when US President Donald Trump blamed China for the coronavirus outbreak.

Hong Kong security law and issue of Chinese telecom giant Huawei also severely affected the ties of the US and China.

Despite Trump's claims of over a million people requesting tickets for Tulsa rally, images showed the stadium filled less than a third of its capacity.

Trump is facing severe backlash in the US due to his response to the coronavirus outbreak and anti-racism protests and is trailing for weeks behind his Democratic presidential rival Joe Biden.

Though there are calls to keep caution while interpreting poll trends, experts have noted that Biden's lead over Trump is far more than Hillary Clinton had against Trump at this point ahead of the 2016 polls.
