The Cold War period saw the West and the Soviet Union trying to go against each other in almost everything. The two sides are said to have come up with secret programs and missions to gain control over the other. The CIA, the United States' intelligence agency, also has some of them under its belt, according to declassified documents released over the years. One of them was Operation Midnight Climax, which aimed to see how sex and drugs could get a target to reveal sensitive and secret information. Reports suggest that the operation ran from 1954 to 1963 and was a part of MKUltra, the agency's mind-control research program that was flagged as highly controversial. As the description suggests, its aim was to take control of the mind of a foreign adversary so that he would spill secrets of the enemy country. Popular Mechanics, reporting on the program, wrote that under Operation Midnight Climax, an apartment was turned into a brothel where men were lured, drugged with LSD, and their reactions to interrogating questions were filmed. Stephen Kinzer, author of Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control, says the reason the CIA started this was because the Soviet was believed to be making advances in psychological torture and brainwashing. Operation Midnight Climax, the most notorious of all of them, continues to shock the world even 62 years after it ended. Here's what went down in the brothel. Prostitutes were hired and given $100 for each man they lured into the brothel. They were given cocktails laced with LSD. Then the women threw around different types of questions at different intervals to learn at what stage the men were most likely to be at a point where their minds could be controlled. The experiment revealed that the man talked and revealed the most secrets when they were asked to stay longer, even after the sexual part of the transaction had ended. A 16-year-old perfectly healthy boy was left fighting for his life after a spider bite in Iowa. The bite area got infected, and multiple visits to the doctor didn't help. Antibiotics didn't work, and he was finally hospitalised, after which his kidneys also went into failure. Noah Johnson of Slater, Iowa, was working at his brother’s fence-building company over the summer to save up for a new truck. On June 18, he felt something bite him. Noah told his mother, Brandy Johnson, that he felt something crawl on him and then a sting, People reported. The spider had bitten him on his lower left butt cheek. It started paining badly, after which Brandy told him to keep an eye on the bite and inform her if it gets worse. Over the next few days, the bite mark grew in size and had two black puncture marks. It was so painful that he couldn't even sit. Brandy took him to Urgent Care on June 23. The doctors noticed the "fang bites" and suspected it was a spider bite that had gotten infected. Brandy was assured that the spiders in Iowa could not kill anyone, although the risk of infection remains high. On July 16, he talked to his mother and told her he was scared that he was dying. Brandy told him he was fine and asked everyone at the hospital to say only positive things around him. Brandy decided to take Noah outside for a change, and it worked. The next day, his vitals improved. He was moved out of the ICU in mid-July after his kidneys started working again. Noah’s friends' mothers started a GoFundMe page for him. He was finally released from the hospital on July 21 but will undergo physical therapy.

An analysis has revealed the US states with the best and the worst sex lives. Sex education experts at Joy Love Dolls analysed Americans' satisfaction with their sex lives by going through their online searches. Terms like "how to improve sex life," "low libido", and "libido booster" were looked at, and the monthly average search volumes were compared with state populations, according to Newsweek. This helped them make a list of which American states are most interested in having a better sex life. There is also a list for states where people are not interested in improving their sex lives as much. The list of states with the worst sex lives is topped by Wyoming. The company recorded only 50.37 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents for the terms. The state's most popular search terms include "how to increase male libido" and "libido booster". Experts say this hints at concerns about low sex drive in the state. Right-wing social media influencers from the United States will tour Israel under an initiative funded by the latter's foreign ministry, a report said. The planned tour will entail 16 influencers touring Israel. These influencers, all aged below 30, will be the supporters of US President Donald Trump's MAGA (Make America Great Again) and America First campaigns. Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that these influencers have hundreds of millions of followers on social media. The motive behind the exercise is to spur support for the Israeli government among American youths. The Israeli government has been facing backlash in several Western countries for its protracted war in Gaza, where an alleged blockade of humanitarian support has triggered a food crisis. The report didn't specify any date for the initiative. Yacov Livne, senior deputy director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Department of Public Diplomacy, told the Israeli publication that amid support for Trump's MAGA, it is imperative for the country that the movement adopt a pro-Israel position. The country's foreign ministry said it aimed to bring 550 such influencers to Israel by the end of this year by organising funded tours. The ministry said the campaign assumed importance because the positive perspectives towards Israel are falling across all younger age groups. However, it noted that Israel enjoys the support of the Republicans and American conservatives. Haaretz reported, quoting sources, that the influencers will be pushed to share with their followers a narrative that aligns with Israel's policy on the Palestinians. “Their networks have huge followings, and their messages are more effective than if they came directly from the ministry," it added. Israel365 will conduct these tours. The organisation promotes support for Israel, specifically among Christians, based on biblical principles. It "stands unapologetically for the Jewish people’s God-given right to the entire Land of Israel”, reads its website. The government will pay $86000 to the organisation to carry out the tour. Thousands of Palestinians have died in Israeli attacks since October 2023. Israel attacked Gaza in response to Hamas' attack, in which over 1200 Israelis, mostly civilians, died.

The United States, early on Saturday (Jul 19) announced that it had brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Syria's interim government after a week of deadly violence in Syria's Druze-majority south. The truce comes amid an eruption of violence between Druze and Bedouin communities in the southern province of Sweida, which has left at least 638 people dead and displaced nearly 80,000, according to monitoring groups and UN agencies. Fierce street battles, artillery shelling, and targeted abductions have gripped Sweida since Sunday, overwhelming hospitals, suggest reports.
What did the US announce?
US special envoy Tom Barrack, currently serving as ambassador to Turkey, said early Saturday that both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa "have agreed to a ceasefire" negotiated by the United States following days of behind-the-scenes diplomacy. The deal, Barrack said, was jointly backed by Turkey and Jordan. "We call upon Druze, Bedouins and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbours," Barrack said in a statement on X. Previously, on Wednesday (Jul 9) the US, as per AFP, had announced an earlier deal in which the Sharaa government pulled out forces from Sweida.
Why did Israel intervene?
Israel launched major strikes into Damascus on Wednesday, targeting Syrian military infrastructure, including the army headquarters. Israel cited the protection of its Druze population and fears of broader regional instability. On Friday (Jul 18), the nation said it was sending nearly $600,000 worth of aid, including food and medical supplies, for the Druze community in Sweida. However, some analysts argue that Israel's real goal may be to exploit Syria's internal divisions and further weaken its military, still recovering from the civil war and the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.
What triggered the fighting?
The violence began last Sunday after a Druze vegetable merchant was allegedly kidnapped by Bedouin tribesmen in southern Syria, sparking a series of tit-for-tat abductions, arson attacks, and eventually pitched battles in residential areas.

US President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, the White House said on Friday. The diagnosis was revealed days after his heavily bruised hand and swollen legs were noticed by social media users. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the 79-year-old leader, who is the oldest person ever to assume the presidency, was also suffering from discoloration of his right hand -- a condition attributed to "tissue irritation from frequent handshaking". US President Donald Trump, who launched a fresh round of global trade war by threatening a host of countries with additional tariffs, said on Monday night that his country is close to reaching a trade deal with India. Trump made the revelation at the White House while he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Before meeting the Israeli PM, Donald Trump announced tariffs for 14 nations, including strategic allies like Japan. He later said that he had sent letters to the nations that weren't in talks with the US for trade deals. Speaking with reporters, Donald Trump pointed out that the US had already entered trade deals with China and the United Kingdom and is in the process of finalising a trade deal with New Delhi. "We've spoken to everybody...it's all done, I told you we'll make some deals, but for the most part, we're going to send a letter. But for the sake of relationships that we've had with a lot of really good countries, we're doing it the way I do it. We could be getting a lot more. We could ask for a lot more than what we're asking for," he added. Trump announced additional tariffs on 14 nations, including Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Japan. He said the new taxes will be imposed with effect from August 1. According to the letters, Thailand and Cambodia each will face a tariff of 36 per cent, while Bangladesh and Serbia will each be hit with a tariff of 35 per cent. A political expert in California has warned of political polarisation in the United States, stating that the second Civil War could break out in the next 10 years. Daily Mail quoted Professor Benjamin Cohen from the University of California-Santa Barbara as saying that California could secede from the US, and this would trigger a civil war. Cohen noted in a university release that California could declare its independence from the US in 2035 because of the growing friction with the federal government. He says that it all comes down to identity which will motivate people to separate from the US. Cohen added that although this scenario looks impossible right now, things can change because in the so-called 'dream states', there is a movement to rally behind specific causes towards which people have a sense of attachment. So they would not want to remain part of the greater US family. He also claimed that both the political parties - Republicans and Democrats - are just two parties with different names, and neither has done anything to decrease the national debt.Last month, Trump and Musk engaged in a public fallout over their disagreements on the bill.Calling the bill "insane", Musk posted, "If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”He added, "Anyone who campaigned on the PROMISE of REDUCING SPENDING, but continues to vote on the BIGGEST DEBT ceiling increase in HISTORY will see their face on this poster in the primary next year."Musk also announced in his post on X, that every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for this bill would “lose their primary next year.”Earlier today, Trump celebrated the victory of the bill passing in the US House and Senate, at a rally called ‘America250’ at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. However, as claimed by Musk, the bill could raise the national debt ceiling in the United States, adding $2.4 to $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

Elon Musk, a close former buddy of Trump, added a poll on X, along with his post, asking, "Should we create the America Party?" as he hints at launching a third political party on Independence Day.

Elon Musk once again floats the idea of launching a third party in the US on its Independence Day amid the ongoing feud with US President Donald Trump over 'Big, Beautiful Bill' which was passed in the US House on Wednesday and is now awaiting Trump's signature. Tech giant and 'ex-close buddy' of Trump took to X, saying, "Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!" He further added a poll on X, along with his post, asking, "Should we create the America Party?" He was hinting at a third party, noting Republican and Democratic parties.

The Fourth of July is celebrated as Independence Day in the United States of America every year and marks the American independence from British rule in 1776. Back in the 18th century, America was under colonisation by the British. It has been hours hours since Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the New York Democrat and minority leader, has been giving his speech in the US House on Thursday, with an aim to delay voting on President Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' on tax and spending. Jeffries has been continuing his marathon speech, opposing Republican's signature legislation carrying Trump's domestic agenda. He even began his speech by saying that he was "planning to take my sweet time” with his speech. Allotted 60 seconds, Jeffries was making use of his prerogative as a leader to stretch his allotted time, and took far longer than that, in a house tradition "magic minute".Trump has earlier said that he wants to sign the bill by July 4. However, Jeffries has no chance of stopping the bill even if he delays the voting.Jeffries in his speech, said, "Republicans are trying to jam this one, big, ugly bill down the throats of the American people,” urging lawmakers to vote against it.Further, the speech mainly focuses on the ramifications of spending cuts to social safety programs, laying out stories of vulnerable Americans who might be affected by its Medicaid cuts.“Leadership requires courage, conviction, compassion — and yet what we have seen from this administration and co-conspirators on the Republican side of the aisle is cruelty, chaos, and corruption,” he said, adding that the bill was “an extraordinary assault on the health care of the American people.”US House Speaker Mike Johnson was likely to address the chamber once Jeffries' speech ends. However, Johnson also has unlimited time, but earlier, he told reporters that he expected his speech would be shorter than Jeffries.'Magic Minute Speech'If democratic leader wants to set a record of a magic minute, he still has to continue for one more hour. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, then the Republican leader, spoke for more than eight hours to delay a vote on a $2 trillion Democratic bill in 2021.They did this with a motive to strengthen the social safety net and fight climate change.

This comes a day after state media reported that Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has granted final approval to a law to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. "Masoud Pezeshkian promulgated the law suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency," state TV said. This further follows after the recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities including Esfahan, Fordow, and Natanz, during its 12-day war with Iran. The Iranian foreign minister in his post stressed that the "reality" is, "To Iranians, what truly "sends a devastating message" and destroys "a diplomatic solution" is very obvious."Targeting Germany for its support to Israel during the war, Araghchi continued, "Germany's explicit support for Israel's unlawful attack on Iran, including safeguarded nuclear sites, as "dirty work" carried out on behalf of the West.He added that Germany also shamefully supported the unlawful US attack against Iranian nuclear facilities, which "violated international law, the NPT, and the UN Charter."The foreign minister continued, "Germany's repudiation of its JCPOA commitments by openly demanding "zero enrichment" in Iran."Araghchi responded to the German Foreign Office's post which they shared on Wednesday, stating, "Iran's decision to suspend cooperation with @iaeaorg sends a devastating message: it eliminates any possibility of international oversight of the Iranian nuclear program, which is crucial for a diplomatic solution. #Iran must reverse this decision."Araghchi lambasted that Iranians were already put off by "Germany's Nazi-style backing of Genocide in Gaza, and its support for Sadam’s war on Iran" by providing materials for chemical weapons. He continued to slam Germany for supporting Iran, and said that the explicit German support for the bombing of Iran has "obliterated the notion that the German regime harbors anything but malice towards Iranians."

In one of the biggest missions carried out by America, the US deployed its B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to strike Iranian nuclear facilities after it joined Israel in its war with Iran. The aircraft dropped 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs on Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow nuclear sites. This was the first time, B-2 was used in combat in such a high-stake mission. However, the B-2 bombers remain exclusive to the US and are not available for any other country, and cost billions to produce. The B-2 Spirit bomber is not just the most dangerous but also the most expensive jet. According to reports, developing a single B-2 bomber costs around $2 billion, and its price rises further when exported. Moreover, its maintenance also costs thousands of crores of rupees.
Comparing cost breakdown

India's Tejas fighter jet
There is a stark difference in the cost of a a B-2 Spirit bomber and India's indigenous Tejas MK1A fighter jet. The B-2 bomber costs Rs 17,142 crores ($2 billion), while a Tejas MK1A, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), costs somewhere between Rs 600 to Rs 638 crores. With all the calculations, India could produce 28 to 29 Tejas MK1A jets for the price of one B-2 bomber. With a state-of-the-art radar system, India's Tejas MJ1A is a 4 or 4.5-generation ultra-modern fighter aircraft.
America's F-35
Another American fifth-generation aircraft, the F-35 Lightening II, is estimated to be worth $110 million (Rs 942 crore) per unit in the international defence market, according to reports.Similar to the B-2 bomber, the F-35 is a stealth jet designed to evade radar detection. There have been reports of potential sales of F-35 jets to India. However, no such confirmation has been made yet. Moreover, it compared 18 F-35 jets that could be acquired for the cost of one B-2 Spirit bomber.
France's Rafale
The price of the base model of France's Dassault Rafale fighter jet is somewhere near to the F-35. However, 36 Rafale jets which were purchased by India were extremely customised to meet specific targets and the cost of each aircraft was Rs 2,057 crore.

'Full trade barrier dropping': Trump says will reach a trade deal with India as Indian delegation reaches Washington

India has repeatedly rejected the establishment of foreign military bases on its soil, including those of the United States of America, despite their growing defence partnership. This position stems from India’s longstanding commitment to strategic autonomy, a doctrine rooted in its post-colonial experience and non-aligned foreign policy. From Nehru to Modi, Indian leaders have maintained a clear stance that sovereignty must not be diluted by the permanent presence of foreign troops, regardless of diplomatic ties or logistical agreements. Unlike other smaller nations that accept US bases for added security, India views such arrangements as incompatible with its military self-sufficiency.
India's military capability
India’s military capabilities, ranging from nuclear deterrence to a large standing army and expanding naval and cyber assets, provide sufficient strategic depth. Instead of hosting foreign bases, India has opted for defence cooperation through limited-access agreements. Deals like LEMOA allow the US to refuel and restock at Indian facilities during joint operations or emergencies, but they do not permit basing rights. This arrangement further enables operational collaboration without compromising sovereignty. Hosting a US base in the country would also carry regional consequences, including potential friction with China and Russia. Moreover, several historical incidents, from the US Navy’s 7th Fleet sailing toward India in the 1971 liberation war to American opposition to India’s nuclear programme, might have fostered a cautious attitude in New Delhi toward US military intentions.
Risks, Ramifications, and Alternative Pathways
The absence of US bases in India is not merely a reflection of India’s position, but it also suits our current US strategic requirements. With extensive facilities in Diego Garcia, Qatar, Japan, and Singapore, the Pentagon has ample reach across the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. From India’s perspective, allowing a base would invite geopolitical liabilities without tangible strategic gains. The recent missile strike on Al Udeid base in Qatar, during the Israel-Iran conflict, highlights the risks of becoming a target by hosting foreign forces. India seeks to avoid being drawn into conflicts unrelated to its national interest.Despite having closer ties through QUAD and joint military exercises like Malabar, New Delhi remains cautious. The concerns over potential disruption to long-standing partnerships, especially with Russia and past US policy decisions further strengthen India’s reluctance. In short, India’s refusal to host US military bases is a deliberate, calculated policy choice, and not an oversight or gap in the bilateral relationship.

India's military capability India’s military capabilities, ranging from nuclear deterrence to a large standing army and expanding naval and cyber assets, provide sufficient strategic depth. Risks, Ramifications, and Alternative Pathways The absence of US bases in India is not merely a reflection of India’s position, but it also suits our current US strategic requirements. India seeks to avoid being drawn into conflicts unrelated to its national interest. Despite having closer ties through QUAD and joint military exercises like Malabar, New Delhi remains cautious. The concerns over potential disruption to long-standing partnerships, especially with Russia and past US policy decisions further strengthen India’s reluctance. In short, India’s refusal to host US military bases is a deliberate, calculated policy choice, and not an oversight or gap in the bilateral relationship.

No boots allowed: Why India refuses US military bases on its soil despite strategic ties

Elliot Rosenberg is one of the few people who shuns the norm. While most people dream of moving to The United States of America, Rosenberg walked in the opposite direction.
Traveling to India transformed Rosenberg's life. He transformed himself from someone who didn’t speak a word of Hindi into a businessman that operated in the language seamlessly. The unstructured nature of India motivated Rosenberg to build a career, develop an idealistic outlook on life, and ultimately, fall in love.
So why would someone attempt to exchange comfort for discomfort? And what could have possessed him to change his life from an exploration journey to residing in a nation so different from his homeland? The answer lies in the journey of Elliot Rosenberg, an American who chose to settle down in India.

What started as a tourist visit turned into a life-changing decision. For many, the American Dream represents success and stability, but for Elliot Rosenberg, it became a costly pursuit. Skyrocketing inflation, rising living expenses, and an increasingly competitive work culture pushed him to seek an alternative—one that led him 8,000 miles away to India.
Elliot had built a promising career in the US, but financial pressures made it difficult to enjoy life to the fullest. Inflation was eating into his earnings, and even basic necessities came with hefty price tags. Housing, healthcare, and daily expenses kept climbing, making it harder to save or invest in personal ventures.
In contrast, India offered a refreshing change. Here, Elliot found that he could maintain a high-quality lifestyle at a fraction of the cost. Settling in Goa, he and his wife, Vrinda, live comfortably on just ₹1 lakh (about $1,200) per month—an amount that barely covers rent in many American cities. In India, however, this budget allows for a spacious home, great food, and a balanced work-life dynamic, something he rarely experienced in the US.
"I came to India in 2015 as a tourist, actually thinking that I would start a business here but my home is in India now," Elliot said with a smile.
In an exclusive interview with WION, Elliot Rosenberg opened up on what prompted him to move to India, how he embraced the Indian culture, his business venture and much more.
Elliot's academic journey began at the University of Virginia, where he pursued a degree in commerce with a secondary focus on Latin American studies. However, his true passion lay in entrepreneurship. Early on, he founded an online marketplace that connected travellers with homestays in Brazil’s favelas. Having spent time in these communities, he saw beyond the often-negative media portrayals and recognised the warmth and potential within them.

His experiences in Brazil shaped his perspective on business and impact. Instead of simply pursuing profit, he wanted his ventures to create meaningful change. After graduating, he booked a one-way ticket to Brazil, eager to immerse himself in its culture and economy. Yet, life had other plans, leading him far beyond South America.

The Indian chapter

In 2015, Elliot arrived in India as a tourist with a keen interest in exploring business opportunities. He had read about the country’s potential for social enterprises but soon realised that understanding India required more than just theoretical knowledge. The complexities of its diverse culture, languages, and business landscape were overwhelming at first, but he was determined to find his place.

A turning point came in 2016 when he joined Awaz.de, a social impact start-up, as the head of sales. This role allowed him to engage with India's grassroots realities while honing his business acumen in an entirely new environment. Over time, India was no longer just a place of work—it became home.

Immersing in culture

Adapting to a new country is never easy, but Elliot embraced the challenge. Learning Hindi was one of his first steps, although he admits that fluency remains elusive. However, his appreciation for India’s cultural depth continued to grow. He explored its traditions, festivals, and social dynamics, gaining a deeper understanding of the country beyond the business sphere.
Amid this journey, Elliot met Vrinda—a former corporate lawyer turned yoga teacher—on a dating app during the pandemic. Their connection was instant, and together, they explored different parts of India before eventually settling in Goa. Their journey together reflects the balance between personal and professional transformation that Elliot has sought throughout his life.
Today, Elliot runs his own business, specialising in helping clients in the US optimise their credit card rewards for luxury travel. Yet, his mission extends beyond personal success. He is committed to creating opportunities for young Indian graduates, particularly those from non-premier institutes, proving that talent exists beyond traditional elite networks.
"My last business that failed in India was looking to train or was helping to train and place freshers from tier two, tier three colleges in India and place them in knowledge worker roles."
"I hope that I can continue that mission in a different way by employing freshers myself directly," he added.

His vision is not just to build a profitable business but to empower fresh talent and encourage other companies to recognize India's vast human potential. His experiences—whether in the favelas of Brazil or the start-up hubs of India—have shaped his belief that real impact comes from providing opportunities where they are often overlooked.
His journey proves that sometimes, happiness isn’t found in where you start but in where you choose to build your future.
