In a televised discussion on July 18, former UK finance minister and potential candidate for prime minister Rishi Sunak addressed the controversies surrounding his family's wealth. His wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and author and educator Sudha Murthy. The tax arrangements of the former UK chancellor's family have long been a source of scrutiny. In the debate that ITV aired on Sunday, Sunak expressed his pride in the journey his parents-in-law had taken.

"My father-in-law came from absolutely nothing and just had a dream and a couple of hundred pounds that my mother-in-law’s savings provided him," Sunak said. "And from that, he went to build one of the world’s largest, most-respected companies, that, by the way, employs thousands of people here in the United Kingdom."

He added: "It is a story I am really proud of, and as prime minister, I want to ensure that we can create more stories like that at home."

The 42-year-old former Chancellor, who was born in the UK, was grilled during a contentious television debate about his wife's tax affairs, which made headlines earlier this year when she voluntarily gave up her legal non-domicile status in order to pay taxes on her Indian income from shares of Infosys, which were also owned by the UK.

Regarding his own US Green Card, which he purportedly renounced after a few months in the Chancellor's position at No. 11 Downing Street, Sunak was also questioned.

The argument was the most recent face-off between the five surviving contenders for the position of new British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party, succeeding Boris Johnson.

Before the third round of voting by Tory MPs on Monday to further limit the field and get to the final two candidates, an instant opinion poll by Opinium indicated that Sunak was the undisputed winner of the discussion on Sunday.

At least one of the candidates with the fewest votes would be eliminated, and another round is anticipated on Tuesday. The former chancellor had the highest rating from the 1,001 participants in the Opinium survey—about 24%—followed by Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, with 19%. Penny Mordaunt, the minister of trade, came in third with 17%, followed by Liz Truss, the secretary of state, with 15%. The viewer poll placed former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch in last place with 12% of the votes.

However, a Conservative Home website poll of the party's grassroots members that was released on Sunday night indicates that Badenoch may be gaining in favour as she has emerged as their top choice, followed by Mordaunt.According to that poll, if Badenoch and Mordaunt made it to the final two, Badenoch would win in a head-to-head matchup 59 to 31 percent of the time. Mordaunt would likewise come up short against Sunak and Truss.

The commander of the British armed forces has called the rumours that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ill or could be killed "wishful thinking". Admiral Tony Radakin also stated that Russia poses "the biggest threat" to the UK and that its struggle would last for decades when the Conservative party choose a replacement for Prime Minister Boris Johnson. After suffering setbacks in the conflict in Ukraine, Russia's ground troops might now be less of a threat, according to the military leader.

As reported by AFP, according to the Admiral, the invasion has resulted in the deaths or injuries of 50,000 Russian soldiers and the destruction of approximately 1,700 Russian tanks and 4,000 armoured battle vehicles. He said, "But Russia continues to be a nuclear power. It's got cyber capabilities, it's got space capabilities and it's got particular programmes under water so it can threaten the underwater cables that allow the world's information to transit around the whole globe."

When Johnson's successor assumes office on September 6, briefings on the military will be dominated by Ukraine, Radakin said, “And then we have to remind the prime minister of the extraordinary responsibility they have with the UK as a nuclear power, and that is part of the initiation for a new British prime minister."

In the meantime, Radakin was questioned over a BBC investigation that revealed commandos in Britain's elite Special Air Service (SAS) corps murdered at least 54 Afghans in questionable circumstances 10 years ago, but the military chain of command stifled concerns. He said that although military police had already determined "that did not happen," they would conduct another investigation if fresh, conclusive proof appeared.

As a summer heatwave wreaks havoc on forests across southwest Europe, showing no signs of abating on Sunday, parts of the continent are bracing for new temperature records early next week. In the United Kingdom currently, an amber alert is in place for almost all of England, reports Metro News. However, in just a couple of days, a red alert signifying there is a danger to life will come into force. Central England is expected to witness temperatures close to 40° Celcius, which is actually even hotter than some parts of the Sahara Desert. Last week, Britain's weather forecaster issued its first red "extreme heat" warning for areas of England. This warning will be applicable on Monday (July 18) and Tuesday (July 19).

British Health Secretary Steve Barclay said on Saturday (July 16) that the country is preparing for impending heat waves, reported Reuters. As scorching heat sweeps the nation, officials are concerned about the consequences on people's health as well as on a healthcare system that is already under stress from the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Barclay, further precautions are being taken by the government and ambulance trusts to handle any higher demand brought on by potentially record-breaking temperatures.

Barclay said that while COVID is an "additional pressure," the government is making sure that all hospitals are using their capacity to the fullest in order to prevent unnecessary delays for patients.

Britain prepares for temperatures 'hotter' than the Sahara desert

'The Guardian' reported that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was previously a journalist, might earn '‘north of £ 1 million’' for his memoir.

Citing publishing insiders, the report said that Johnson could start writing once again and publish a book about his time leading the country and earning a large sum from it.

The British daily quoted a publisher as saying that it was “way too early for anything concrete to happen or be submitted.”

“I would be amazed if he doesn’t sign up somewhere for memoirs at some point in the autumn,” the publisher added.

The book would command “north of £1 million” according to executive director and literary agent at Northbank Talent, Martin Redfern.

This is not the first time a British leader will write his memoir as David Cameron wrote 'For the Record while Gordon Brown wrote 'My Life' and both of them earned them sums of six figures.

Although all the money he made was donated to the Royal British Legion, Tony Blair’s A Journey was reportedly sold for an advance of about £4.6 million.

In a deal he signed in 2015 with the publisher Hodder & Stoughton, Johnson was also due to write a book about Shakespeare for which he was reportedly paid £500,000.

Ex-Olympic champ Mo Farah says he was trafficked to UK as a child, reveals his real identity

Britain's weather department issued a rare "extreme heat" warning on Monday (July 11) for the weekend. As per the department, the temperatures are predicted to hit more than 30 degrees Celsius across large parts of England and Wales.

The temperatures are already starting to rise into the 30s but the weather warning doesn't come into effect until Sunday. As per the weather forecasters in the country, the warm weather would remain for much of the week, particularly in southern and central England and Wales, with peaks of 33C possible in southeast England on Tuesday.

UK-based media outlets reported that the East Midlands, East of England, South East England, North East England, North West England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber are under a warning for extreme heat.

The Met Office has warned the heat is likely to be "population-wide adverse health effects" and can be including "potential serious illness or danger to life".

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Rebekah Sherwin said the UK highs would continue into early next week. Sherwin said, "From Sunday and into Monday, temperatures are likely to be in excess of 35C in the southeast (of England), although the details still remain uncertain."

She added, "Elsewhere, temperatures could be fairly widely above 32C in England and Wales, and in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius further north."

Britain's highest recorded temperature was 38.7C at Cambridge Botanic Garden, in eastern England, on July 25, 2019.

Sherwin said meteorologists could not rule out that record being broken but it was "still only a low probability".

"A number of weather scenarios are still possible and at the current time, mid- or perhaps high-30s are looking more likely," she added.

The extreme heat warning was classified as "amber", the second-highest of three, indicating a "high impact" on daily life and people.

'Danger to life': Rare 'extreme heat' issued in UK as temperatures soar

The ruling Conservative party in the United Kingdom on Monday (July 12) said that the new Prime Minister to replace outgoing incumbent Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5.

Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives' influential 1922 Committee, told reporters: "We do need to make sure there is a decent amount of time before the result is announced on 5th September."

Brady revealed details of the party leadership election timetable. He also said that that the nominations would open and close on Tuesday with the first votes on Wednesday and Thursday. He further mentioned that all candidates will need 20 backers to be included in the first round of voting.

The Conservative Party said the postal ballot of party members would be a choice between two candidates to be selected under an expedited process to whittle down the field from the 11 candidates who have declared so far.

Brady said he hoped the new prime minister would be announced on 5 September, at that time when the Commons returns from the summer recess.

After a slew of scandals, Johnson announced last Thursday (July 7) that he would quit as prime minister, but stay in the post until his successor was chosen.

Johnson won't endorse any of the candidates

Johnson on Monday declined to endorse any of the candidates who are in the race to replace him, saying he wouldn't want to damage their chances.

"I wouldn't want to damage anybody's chances by offering my support," Johnson said in his first media appearance since he said last week he would step down.

Eleven candidates have now launched campaigns to be the next PM, with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss the latest to declare her candidacy.

Johnson said he was "sure the outcome will be good" and "whoever takes over" would inherit "a great agenda to be continued."

The ruling Conservative party in the United Kingdom on Monday (July 12) said that the new Prime Minister to replace outgoing incumbent Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5.

The ruling Conservative party in the United Kingdom on Monday (July 12) said that the new Prime Minister to replace outgoing incumbent Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5. Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives' influential 1922 Committee, told reporters: "We do need to make sure there is a decent amount of time before the result is announced on 5th September." Brady revealed details of the party leadership election timetable. He also said that that the nominations would open and close on Tuesday with the first votes on Wednesday and Thursday. He further mentioned that all candidates will need 20 backers to be included in the first round of voting. Brady said he hoped the new prime minister would be announced on 5 September, at that time when the Commons returns from the summer recess. After a slew of scandals, Johnson announced last Thursday (July 7) that he would quit as prime minister, but stay in the post until his successor was chosen. "I wouldn't want to damage anybody's chances by offering my support," Johnson said in his first media appearance since he said last week he would step down. Eleven candidates have now launched campaigns to be the next PM, with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss the latest to declare her candidacy. United Kingdom to have new Prime Minister by September 5

Britain's new Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi has inherited at a point of time when the country is facing a cost-of-living crisis that risks pushing the UK economy into recession.

A recent report by the Observer suggested that before he was promoted, a flag was raised by officials over the financial affairs of Zahawi.

As per the report, civil servants in the cabinet office's propriety and ethics team are said to have alerted United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson to a HM Revenue and Customs "flag" over Zahawi before his appointment. Despite that, he was appointed Johnson.

As quoted by the media outlet, one source said this weekend: "It's extraordinary that flags were raised ahead of Nadhim's appointment by the Downing Street proprietary team. These sorts of concerns would stop someone receiving an MBE or OBE. The idea he could be chancellor or even prime minister is unbelievable."

As per the report, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has apparently investigated Zahawi, the Independent reported last week. There is no official comment on why he was probed. The investigation also did not lead to any action and there is no suggestion of wrongdoing.

Johnson appointed Nadhim Zahawi as finance minister after Rishi Sunak resigned from the post. Zahawi, 55, inherits an economy that will face immediate pressure to do more to help struggling households and to lower taxes which are on course to hit their highest level in decades.

Zahawi was previously the education secretary. He was replaced as education secretary by Michelle Donelan, previously a junior education minister.

Did Boris Johnson ignore when flags were raised ahead of Nadhim Zahawi's appointment?

Defending himself, the United Kingdom's newly-appointed Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi said he is "clearly being smeared" after reports accused him of his tax affairs.

Defending himself, the United Kingdom's newly-appointed Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi said he is "clearly being smeared" after reports accused him of his tax affairs. A media report recently claimed the investigation authorities are probing his tax affairs. During an interview with UK-based media outlet Sky News, Zahawi said, "I was clearly being smeared. I was being told that the Serious Fraud Office that the National Crime Agency, that HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) are looking into me." Reacting to that, Zahawi said, "I'm not aware of this." He further insisted, "I've always declared my taxes. I will answer questions HMRC has of me." A new report shows that there has been a steady increase in police officers sharing racist and far-right content online all over Europe. According to the report by the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), the police forces are suffering from a growing “culture of extremism” and the two most affected countries were the United Kingdom and France. While the right-wing support is quite common in police forces around these two countries, the report also pointed out that Belgium, Germany and Hungary have recently seen high-ranking police officials join extreme-right wing political parties.

'Ready For Rishi': Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak bids to replace Boris Johnson

The 'rise and fall' of UK PM: Scandals that dragged down Boris Johnson

The chaos erupted when ministers started posting their resignation papers hours after Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned Tuesday night.

Over 30 ministers have resigned from his government, but defiant United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson is trying really hard to stay in power. The chaos erupted when ministers started posting their resignation papers hours after Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned Tuesday night. The top misters have quit, plunging Johnson's government deep into chaos as it is already struggling with a slew of scandals. In the latest development, it is understood that the senior ministers on Wednesday (July 6) were set to tell Johnson he must quit as prime minister. Without quoting any source, British media reported that apparently, a delegation was awaiting his return from a two-hour grilling by a parliamentary committee to tell him to quit. Despite the chaos, at the parliamentary committee and an earlier question and answer session with MPs in parliament, Boris said he wants to get on with the job. On being asked about the cabinet delegation, Johnson told the committee: "I'm not going to give a running commentary on political events." "We're going to get on with the government of the country. What we need is stable government, loving each other as Conservatives, getting on with our priorities, that is what we need to do," he added. 'Bye, Boris' Although he says he won't quit, but politicians across the political spectrum have expressed that they are unhappy with Johnson's leadership skills. During PMQs, the live stream was cut off short of time when MPs decided to shout "Bye Boris!" after the end of recently resigned Javid's speech. Cries of "bye, Boris" echoed around the chamber. Most Tories were conspicuously silent when Johnson attacked the Labour opposition at PMQs. Some shook their heads. Watch the video here × Johnson only narrowly survived a no-confidence vote among Conservative MPs a month ago, which ordinarily would mean he could not be challenged again for another year. But the influential "1922 Committee" of non-ministerial Tory MPs is reportedly seeking to change the rules, with its executive committee meeting later Wednesday. What happens next, only time will tell. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

'Bye Bye Boris' buzzes in British parliament but Johnson vows to stay in power

Whoever does take over as the next conservative party leader and UK's next Prime Minister is going to have to deal with a cost of living crisis and rising inflation. The Bank of England has warned of a further interest rate rise, this alongside vowing to try and bring inflation down.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has decided to sack Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove as calls for his resignation continue to grow. According to a number of media reports, Gove was one of the first cabinet ministers to express his unhappiness at Johnson not resigning from his post. The situation got worse on Tuesday when Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned from their post citing lack of trust in Johnson. However, the British PM continued to maintain that he will "keep going" despite a number of resignations and lack of public support.

"The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances when he's been handed a colossal mandate is to keep going and that's what I'll do," Johnson told MPs according to a Bloomberg report.

Johnson has come under a lot of fire on the appointment of MP Chris Pincher as the deputy whip of the party earlier this year. There were a number of allegations of inappropriate behaviour when it came to Pincher and it came into light that Johnson was aware of it since 2019. Former senior civil servant Lord McDonald revealed the Prime Minister had been told in person of the 2019 allegations.

UK finance and health ministers quit in protest at Boris Johnson's leadership

At a time when United Kingdom shoppers are facing higher bills, the country's Prime Minister Boris Johnson is accused of using a government-private jet to fly home from a weekend with his family in Cornwall. The reported incident triggered questions about the use of taxpayer-funded resources.

UK-based media outlet Mirror reported that the British PM has been accused of using official planes as his "personal taxi service".

The trip was scheduled on a weekend before defeat in the Tiverton by-election. During the weekend, Johnson was photographed enjoying a day on the beach with his wife, Carrie Johnson.

A report by Sunday Mirror noted that an official plane was apparently taken off from London to Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose early on the morning of June 13.

It reportedly returned to London shortly after 10:00am (local time). The report claimed that the plane had complete United Kingdom livery and the tail number G-GBNI.

Emily Thornberry, who is Labour's shadow Attorney General, said as quoted by the report: "While the rest of Britain is struggling to pay the bills, Boris Johnson keeps living the high life at public expense. Once again, he's been caught treating the government's official plane as his personal taxi service, regardless of what it costs the environment or the taxpayer. It's the act of a man drunk on power, who needs to be told he’s had enough."

As quoted by the news website, a Number 10 Spokesperson said: "All travel decisions are made with consideration for security and time restraints. The PM is accompanied on government business by a delegation of staff, which is taken into consideration as part of ensuring taxpayer value for money."

"This was the sole reason for the plane being used to transport the PM and his staff back from this particular visit," the spokesperson added.

More trouble for Boris Johnson? Britsh PM sent ministerial jet to bring family home from Cornwall

The United Kingdom is planning to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda on a second flight, a report by The Guardian said citing sources. In June, the first flight was cancelled when the plan to fly asylum-seekers to Rwanda was blocked dramatically with a last-minute intervention by European judges. The plane was grounded minutes before it was due to depart.

The UK-based media outlet further reported that the second flight could take off before the courts have ruled on whether the scheme is lawful. This comes after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) blocked the government's move to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Despite the fact that the full high court hearing to discuss and analyse the government's Rwanda plans does not begin until 19 July, the media outlet has learned that a second flight could take off in a matter of weeks.

London and Rwanda agreed in April that tens of thousands of asylum seekers who arrived illegally in Britain will be sent to the East African country to have their claims processed. Rwanda said it also remained fully committed to the plan.

On June 22, Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said that the country will remain under the jurisdiction of the ECHR. Raab told Sky News that "we are staying in the ECHR." However, he added that it was "legitimate to push back" against ECHR rulings. And also noted that the UK parliament should have the last word on the law of the land.

General Sir Patrick Sanders, Britain's Chief of the General Staff, said on Tuesday (June 28) that the United Kingdom must be prepared to "fight and win" against Russia. Talking about the current tectonic shift in the geopolitical relations caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Sanders drew parallels with the build-up to the breakout of the Second World War. The country's army chief has said that "this is our 1937 moment". The new head of the British army warned that the country must mobilise in response to the threat posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, invoking the Allies' struggle against Nazi Germany. ALSO READ | Russian missile strike on shopping mall kills at least 16 people, Ukraine says Patrick Sanders, a general who became the army's top officer this month, said that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his "expansionist ambitions" represented "a clear and present danger" to Western "principles of sovereignty and democracy". While addressing an audience at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) for an annual army conference in London, Sanders said, "We are not at war. We must act rapidly so that we aren't drawn into one through a failure to contain territorial expansion." His comments were made as NATO members are meeting in Madrid Tuesday for a summit. The meeting is expected to be dominated by the West's response to Russia's war. He also called the scale of the war in Ukraine "unprecedented". He said, "In all my years in uniform I haven't known such a clear threat to the principles of sovereignty and democracy and the freedom to live without fear of violence as the brutal aggression of President Putin and his expansionist ambitions." The army head also backed the US and UK governments' stance of aggressively arming Ukraine in its fight against Russia to maintain peace throughout the rest of Europe. "This is the moment to defend the democratic values that define us. This is the moment to help our brave Ukrainian allies in their gallant struggle. This is the moment we stand with our friends and partners to maintain peace throughout the rest of Europe," Sanders said. 'This is our 1937 moment': Army chief says UK must be prepared to 'fight war and win' against Russia

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, UK universities have reported that more students are experiencing mental health problems.

The pandemic has not only exacerbated rates of anxiety but also led to a “significant rise” in young people struggling at university, according to experts.

With the National Union of Students' research suggesting “the majority of students are burdened by anxiety”, its president Larissa Kennedy has said she was “deeply concerned” by the student mental health crisis.

Over two in five students did not think their institution prevented problems from arising as per recent research by the Humen mental health charity.

The survey, which was conducted on 7,385 students, found that nearly half of students said mental health difficulties had a negative impact on their university experience.

Calling for more funding to introduce “early support hubs” that would “prevent thousands reaching crisis point”, Kennedy said students’ struggles were caused by exam pressure combined with the cost of living crisis.

To close the gap between the NHS and university mental health services, the British government announced £3m in funding last week. Equating it to just £1 per student, Kennedy warned was a drop in the ocean.

Rachel Sandby-Thomas of the Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA) told 'The Guardian' that “universities were seeing an increase in students experiencing mental health difficulties and, while this has been growing over time, it has undoubtedly been accelerated by the pandemic.”

Highlighting that professionals had seen “a significant rise” in students presenting with eating disorders, a leading medical expert on student mental health, Dr Dominique Thompson said the youngsters have been “terribly impacted” by lockdown and the pandemic.

With 3,706 more students quitting their courses, recent data from the Student Loans Company suggested that these difficult experiences may be translating into higher university dropout rates.

Universities are pressuring the British government to ensure “sustained funding and by commissioning student-facing NHS services”.

Rachel Sandby-Thomas of the Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA) told 'The Guardian' that “universities were seeing an increase in students experiencing mental health difficulties and, while this has been growing over time, it has undoubtedly been accelerated by the pandemic.” Highlighting that professionals had seen “a significant rise” in students presenting with eating disorders, a leading medical expert on student mental health, Dr Dominique Thompson said the youngsters have been “terribly impacted” by lockdown and the pandemic. With 3,706 more students quitting their courses, recent data from the Student Loans Company suggested that these difficult experiences may be translating into higher university dropout rates. Universities are pressuring the British government to ensure “sustained funding and by commissioning student-facing NHS services”. (With inputs from agencies) Watch WION's live TV here:

United Kingdom: More students are experiencing mental health problems in wake of coronavirus pandemic

In a bizarre incident, a United Kingdom school has banned all types of physical contact between students. This includes hugging and even play-fighting. As per the school, this rule seeks to "further improve our positive school culture".

As per Metro News, Mossley Hollins High School's 'newsflash' says that no student "should ever be" touching another. The ban is also imposed during breaks and lunchtime.

The circular goes on to say that there are five reasons behind the so-called 'no-contact' rule. These include ensuring that students 'feel safe in school' have 'healthy relationships with their peers', 'a supportive environment in and out of lessons,' show 'mutual respect and are kind to each other', 'have positive attitudes toward each other,' and 'have positive attitudes toward' one another.

However, the rule has sparked outrage among parents and on social media. Critics of the rule question whether children would be allowed to hug their friends, comfort them and provide first aid or if even that is against the rules. Others have commented that the rule is ridiculous, and that teaching children not to show affection is a sure-fire way to "give them problems down the line."

UK school's bizarre rule bans 'hugging' among students, people call it a sure-fire way to give them 'problems'

Soaring food prices pushed British consumer price inflation to a 40-year high of 9.1% last month, the highest rate out of the Group of Seven countries and one which underlines the severity of the country's cost-of-living crunch.

The reading was up from 9.0% in April and matched the consensus of a Reuters poll of economists. Records from the Office for National Statistics show May's inflation was the highest since March 1982 - and worse is likely to come.

Sterling, one of the weakest currencies against the U.S. dollar this year, fell below $1.22, down 0.6% on the day, before later recovering.

Some investors judge Britain to be at risk of both persistently high inflation and recession, reflecting its large, imported energy bill and ongoing Brexit-related friction which could further hurt trade ties with the European Union.

"With the economic outlook so unclear, no one knows how high inflation could go, and how long it will continue for - making fiscal and monetary policy judgements particularly tough," said Jack Leslie, senior economist at the Resolution Foundation think tank.

Average pay is not keeping up with inflation and trade unions have warned of widespread strikes in the coming months. Railway staff have already staged mass walkouts this week.

Britain's headline inflation rate in May was higher than in the United States, France, Germany and Italy. While Japan and Canada have yet to report consumer price data for May, neither are likely to come close.

The Bank of England said last week that inflation was likely to remain above 9% over the coming months before peaking at slightly above 11% in October, when regulated household energy bills are due to rise again.

Financial markets show interest rates in Britain are on course to rise above 3% around the turn of the year from 1.25% now, although most economists think waning economic growth means the BoE will raise rates by less than that.

Finance minister Rishi Sunak said after the data that the British government was doing all it could to combat a surge in prices and the central bank would act "forcefully" to contain inflation.

Prices for food and non-alcoholic drinks rose by 8.7% in annual terms in May - the biggest jump since March 2009 and making this category the biggest driver of annual inflation last month.

Annual core inflation - which strips out food and energy prices to give an idea of domestically generated cost pressure - fell for the first time since September to 5.9% from 6.2%, a lower-than-expected reading.

"The Bank of England may indeed gain some hope from the fact that core price pressures are subsiding (but) we doubt this ... will be enough to avert further rate rises in the coming months," said Sandra Horsfield, an economist from Investec.

Overall consumer prices rose by 0.7% in monthly terms in May, the ONS said, a little more than the 0.6% consensus.

Costs paid by British factories for materials and energy - a key determinant of prices later paid by consumers in shops - were 22.1% higher in May than a year earlier, the biggest increase since these records began in 1985, the ONS said.

Jeremy Hunt, the former health secretary of the United Kingdom, revealed that he had cancer but now he has recovered, UK media outlets reported. He said that "every member of his family" has had the disease and noted that he had "a minor one".

Hunt revealed the news as he prepares to take part in the Race for Life charity run. The 55-year-old is set to take part in a 5km race to raise money for cancer charities. During the run, he will be joined by cancer survivor Rod Pluthero, 73. A Tory MP Angela Richardson, 47, will also join him.

The Conservative MP for South West Surrey, as quoted by The Guardian, said: "I have had a minor one myself which has fortunately been resolved. So it's touched my family very dramatically and I know it has touched many many families."

Hunt added that his work on the select committee has shown him that there are a lot of things that can be done to improve the cancer survival rates. "They are getting better but the more we can do to raise money and raise awareness, the more lives we'll save," he added.

Richardson said as quoted by the website said, "There will be few of us who have been untouched by cancer – with one in two people now developing it at some stage of our lives, research into successful treatments and prevention of the disease is an overwhelming health priority."

Richardson, who represents the Guildford constituency, further added that it's his "pleasure" to be able to join Hunt at the Race for Life. Richardson also hailed themselves for taking forward the campaign together to allow the best "possible outcomes" for cancer patients in the future.

The latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have shown that coronavirus infections are rising again to one in 50 people in the United Kingdom.

A live roundup of the latest data and trends from the ONS reflected that coronavirus cases have soared 40 per cent in seven days with experts warning about that the resurgence of the virus could add to travel chaos and disrupt hospitals.

The increase, which was likely caused by infections from Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, was reflected in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland in the most recent week.

With scientists saying they were able to dodge antibodies from earlier infection, the two subvariants of the highly contagious Covid-19 strain have spread recently, according to a report from UK’s Health Security Agency released last week.

It had said that “Although the number of total genomes is small, the apparent geographic spread suggests that the variant is transmitting successfully.”

Downing Street has published a letter from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's former ethics adviser Lord Geidt who resigned suddenly on Wednesday (June 15). Notably, Christopher Geidt is the second official to quit the role in two years in an apparent protest against Johnson's actions. In his resignation letter to Johnson, Lord Geidt said that "this request has placed me in an impossible and odious position" and he can have "no part in this."

Without divulging details, he referred to a plan that risked breaking the government's ministerial code. Although he said an intention to breach the code to suit a political end would have made a "mockery" of the rules.

Lord Geidt: UK ethics adviser quit after being placed in 'impossible and odious position'

Media outlets in the United Kingdom reported that four Metropolitan police officers are being probed for misconduct after a 15-year-old black schoolgirl was strip-searched while at school. The teenager is being referred to as Child Q. Reports added that the girl was strip-searched by female Met officers in 2020. The girl was apparently wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis at her east London school. At the time of the search, no adult was present there and also her parents were not informed. She was strip-searched when she was menstruating.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), a police watchdog in the UK stated that it a voluntary referral from the Met was received on May 6, 2021. As per IOPC, the investigation was started five days later.

As quoted by BBC, a spokesperson said: "We can confirm that four Metropolitan Police Service officers have been served with gross misconduct notices by us in connection with our ongoing investigation into complaints that Child Q was inappropriately strip-searched.

"As with all of our investigations we continually review the evidence and lines of inquiry as the investigation progresses. As a part of this, matters were identified which required new notices of investigation to be served on officers," the spokesperson added.

As per the police watchdog, the officers were being investigated for "potential breaches of the police standards of professional behaviour at the level of gross misconduct, which does not necessarily mean that disciplinary proceedings will follow."

IOPC also said that they are considering whether or not the girl's ethnicity "played a part in the officers' decision" to strip-search her.

As per the police watchdog, the officers were being investigated for "potential breaches of the police standards of professional behaviour at the level of gross misconduct, which does not necessarily mean that disciplinary proceedings will follow." IOPC also said that they are considering whether or not the girl's ethnicity "played a part in the officers' decision" to strip-search her.
