Liz Truss, who is one of the Tory leadership frontrunners, is accused of labelling British workers "lazy". Quoting leaked audio that was released Tuesday, media outlets reported that Truss said that the British workers needed "more graft" and also suggested that they lacked the "skill and application" of foreign rivals.&nbsp;

The two-minute audio clip is apparently quite old. Reports say that it is dated when was a senior minister in the finance ministry between 2017 and 2019.&nbsp;

In the video, Truss said that the workers' "mindset and attitude" were partly to blame for the UK's relatively poor productivity.&nbsp;

"If you go to China it's quite different, I can assure you. There's a fundamental issue of British working culture... I don't think people are that keen to change," she said.&nbsp;

Liz Truss calls British workers 'lazy' and says they lack 'skill and application': Report

Tory leader Rishi Sunak, currently in the race for the keys to 10, Downing Street on Tuesday pledged that if elected to power, he will overhaul the country's bureaucracy.

Tory leader Rishi Sunak, currently in the race for the keys to 10, Downing Street on Tuesday pledged that if elected to power, he will overhaul the country's bureaucracy. Claiming to bring 'Rolls Royce' civil service to the masses, Sunak stated the civil servants will no longer be rewarded for the length of their service but for their performance. “I’ll press ahead with cuts to back office Civil Service headcount, recruiting and retaining the brightest and best. I’ll strengthen civil servants’ experience beyond Whitehall, allow ministers to bring in more external expertise, and bring in performance pay so we have a truly Rolls Royce service delivering for and accountable to the British people,” said Sunak. Sunak further remarked that he wanted to create a “sharper, leaner” bureaucracy in the backdrop of a post-Covid UK. “As Chancellor, I saw parts of the British Civil Service at its best, delivering world-class COVID support schemes in record time. But the bloated post-COVID state is in need of a shake up so I will create a sharper, leaner civil service,” added Sunak. Sunak and his battle with Liz Truss Sunak is currently battling foreign secretary Liz Truss for the Prime Minister's post. However, the British Indian former chancellor has been losing ground lately. After Boris Johnson resigned as the PM, Sunak was dubbed the clear front runner. But in recent times, some of his statements and actions have changed the tide in favour of Truss. Reportedly, on Tuesday, Sunak faced flak on social media platforms after news reports suggested that Sunak was spending almost $40 million on a pool at his North Yorkshire property as UK residents braced for another heatwave and a rise in the cost of living. Sunak stated that his immediate target was tackling inflation. However, once that is achieved, his government will slash one pence off income tax in 2024, as announced in his tenure as the chancellor. Ransomware attack hits UK NHS's software, experts fear theft of sensitive patient data

Health officials in the United Kingdom said on Wednesday (August 10) that around one million kids in London will be offered a polio booster vaccine. This comes after the virus was detected in sewage samples across the capital. Authorities are alarmed as the virus can cause paralysis.&nbsp;

A health ministry statement said the move came "following the discovery of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus in sewage in north and east London." The state mentioned that a targeted booster would be offered to children between one and nine.&nbsp;

"Following the discovery of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus in sewage in north and east London, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (<abbr title="Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation">JCVI</abbr>) has advised that a targeted inactivated polio vaccine (<abbr title="inactivated polio vaccine">IPV</abbr>) booster dose should be offered to all children between the ages of 1 and 9 in all London boroughs,"&nbsp;UK Health Security Agency's statement on August 10 read.&nbsp;

The last case of polio in the UK was in 1984. But concerns have been raised as since February this year, the polio virus has been found 116 times in London's waste water. It was first detected at an east London treatment work earlier this year.&nbsp;

To tackle the situation, the country is banking on an urgent immunisation campaign, which is expected to see nearly a million children offered the vaccine. Notably, there have been no confirmed cases of the disease so far.&nbsp;

The statement said, "The detected levels suggest "that there is some level of virus transmission in these boroughs which may extend to the adjacent areas."&nbsp;

Kathlene O'Reilly, who is a polio eradication expert, said, "The discovery in the London sewage samples suggests "there may be localised spread of poliovirus."&nbsp;

Vanessa Saliba, the consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said, "For the majority of the population, who are fully vaccinated, the risk is low."&nbsp;

She added, "But we know the areas in London where the poliovirus is being transmitted have some of the lowest vaccination rates. This is why the virus is spreading in these communities and puts those residents not fully vaccinated at greater risk."&nbsp;

Health officials in the United Kingdom said on Wednesday (August 10) that around one million kids in London will be offered a polio booster vaccine. This comes after the virus was detected in sewage samples across the capital. Authorities are alarmed as the virus can cause paralysis. A health ministry statement said the move came "following the discovery of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus in sewage in north and east London." The state mentioned that a targeted booster would be offered to children between one and nine. "Following the discovery of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus in sewage in north and east London, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that a targeted inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) booster dose should be offered to all children between the ages of 1 and 9 in all London boroughs," UK Health Security Agency's statement on August 10 read. But concerns have been raised as since February this year, the polio virus has been found 116 times in London's waste water. It was first detected at an east London treatment work earlier this year. To tackle the situation, the country is banking on an urgent immunisation campaign, which is expected to see nearly a million children offered the vaccine. Notably, there have been no confirmed cases of the disease so far. The statement said, "The detected levels suggest "that there is some level of virus transmission in these boroughs which may extend to the adjacent areas." Vanessa Saliba, the consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said, "For the majority of the population, who are fully vaccinated, the risk is low." She added, "But we know the areas in London where the poliovirus is being transmitted have some of the lowest vaccination rates. This is why the virus is spreading in these communities and puts those residents not fully vaccinated at greater risk." Analysts on Tuesday (August 9) said that the cap on domestic energy prices is expected to rise to over $5,089 a year in January 2023 in the United Kingdom. The potential increase is because of soaring wholesale costs. Also, the changes in the way the cap is set would see prices up 230 per cent from the year before. If it happens, it will deepen the cost of living crisis as the latest forecast by Cornwall Insight spells more misery for millions of people. It is based on the latest wholesale energy prices. If we cover both gas and electricity, the average annual household dual fuel bill will be around 3,582 pounds. Dr Craig Lowrey, who is the consultancy's principal consultant, said, "It is essential that the government use our predictions to spur on a review of the support package being offered to consumers." Cornwall also mentioned that the January forecast has been revised upwards following changes made to the way the cap is calculated by regulator Ofgem. ALSO READ | China property crisis forcing families to live in unfinished, dangerous flats Lowrey further said, "If the £400 was not enough to make a dent in the impact of our previous forecast, it most certainly is not enough now." "The government must make introducing more support over the first two quarters of 2023 a number one priority. In the longer term, a social tariff or other support mechanism to target support at the most vulnerable in society are options that we at Cornwall Insight have proposed previously. Right now, the current price cap is not working for consumers, suppliers, or the economy." The announcement comes days after the Bank of England's forecast that Britain will sink into a lengthy recession later this year as inflation rockets even higher. As a last-ditch resort, both Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee will be making an urgent application to the European Convention on Human Rights "Our solicitors will be filing to the European Court of Human Rights. They've been given a strict timeline of 9 am. Again, no time whatsoever. Every single court case we've had we've had no time at all, one or two days to prepare and get the whole case together." said Hollie. However, with the 11 AM deadline approaching fast, it will be a race against time and authorities for Archie's parents to get their plea heard. They will have to reach the European Convention on Human Rights at 9 AM sharp and submit their application. A night prior to the supposed removal of life support, Archie's parents held a vigil by his bedside in the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, East London. They played Archie's favourite songs and television shows. Moreover, they kept constantly talking to Archie, telling him what was happening with the family and friends. Archie's mother Hollie revealed that Barts Health NHS Trust had even denied her family's request of transferring Archie to a hospice to have a dignified death if the ventilator was to be removed. "I think it's every parent's right to be able to take your child out of a very loud hospital for a peaceful, dignified - as they call it - a dignified death, which is what all these court cases are about, apparently, Archie's dignity." said Hollie. IN PICS | Should Archie Battersbee's life-support treatment stop? UK court says yes, but his parents disagree As reported extensively by WION, Archie Battersbee suffered catastrophic brain damage at his home in Southend, Essex on April 7, 2022. He was found unconscious with a ligature over his head. It is assumed that the ligature could have been due to his participation in an online asphyxiation challenge. The High Court had previously ruled that life support treatment for Archie should be stopped as he is "brain-stem dead". The final decision was made by the court despite opposition from his parents and a last-minute intervention by the United Nations. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Sky-high energy prices and historic inflation may have caused financial woes to ordinary Britishers but the multinational oil and gas companies are having a payday. Reportedly, British Gas giant Centrica has posted operating profits of $1.5 million in the first six months of the year, up $283 million from a year ago.

Climate change is wreaking havoc across the globe. The changes are evident, but there are the so-called “deniers”. On one hand, experts raise concerns and warnings over climate-related issues, but some people call it propaganda. The United Kingdom suffered due to an unprecedented heatwave. Research released on Friday (July 29) stated that this month’s record-shattering heatwave, a climate change caused by human activity, is at least 10 times more likely to occur in Britain. But a report by BBC highlight the unnecessary and unprecedented levels of social media trolling done to target weather forecasters. The report mentioned that when the entire country was baking, some people targeted the channel’s forecasters. They claimed that they received hundreds of abusive tweets or emails questioning their reports. ALSO READ | Despite gas crisis and inflation surge, Eurozone economy grows faster than expected As quoted by the website, BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor said he had “never experienced anything like it in nearly 25 years working in weather”. “It’s a more abusive tone than I’ve ever received. I switched off a bit from it all as it became too depressing to read some of the responses,“ BBC’s Matt Taylor was quoted as saying. The abuses also targeted Met Office and Royal Meteorological Society forecasters. Royal Meteorological Society chief executive Professor Liz Bentley said that the members faced “public ridicule, accusations of lying or suggestions of being blackmailed”. She said, “Anecdotally, abusive comments increase when the message about climate change is intrinsic to the story.” Alex Deakin, who is the lead meteorologist at Met Office, said, “It’s scary in some ways.” Deakin added: “I find it more frustrating and offensive for my colleagues — some of the great minds in climate science. Show a bit of respect and do a bit more research rather than just believe Bob down the pub or Tony on YouTube.” ALSO READ | Twitter-Elon Musk to head for trial over buyout deal worth $44 billion on October 17 Their report attached several screenshots of tweets after hiding the name and Twitter handle, to show the kind of language used by some users to address the forecasters. Tweets include messages like “it’s just summer” and saying that they are spreading “alarmism” and “hysteria”. The tweets asked to “stop scaremongering”. There are several other examples also with texts containing personal insults and messages for BBC Weather and its presenters. But the question is, why people are in denial? Eastern England recorded an all-time high temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius and the hot spell sparked fires that destroyed dozens of homes in London. Overall, at least 34 locations in Britain registered record highs on July 20, when the heatwave peaked over western Europe. Tomasz Schafernaker, the BBC meteorologist, said: “What frustrates me most is when I’m accused of twisting the truth. As meteorologists, we report facts. There is no conspiracy.” Matt Taylor described his experience of covering the heatwave. He said it was “really emotional” and it felt “like a real turning point in public attitude and realisation to what has happened to our climate.” He added: “The weather is very emotive. It gets people so worked up. What’s good for some is bad for others and vice versa. Our climate has changed, so our reporting and response also has to change. All we’re trying to do is bring people the facts.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Britain's National Health Service (NHS) has announced that it will be shutting its three-decades-old Gender and Identity Development Service (Gids) centre at Tavistock &amp; Portman NHS foundation. Reportedly, an independent review has found the institute inadequate in dealing with the needs of the patients.

The institute aimed to help children and other young people, confused about their gender identities to find themselves and their identities.

However, in recent times, the whistleblowers, parents and other stakeholders revealed that the institute was inept at handling such delicate discussions, with some alleging that patients were referred to a gender transitioning pathway too quickly.

Keira Bell, a former patient had brought a suit against the institute in the High Court where she questioned the institute's use of puberty blockers.

Keira also stated that she was not challenged enough for her decision as a 16-year-old by the institute when she started taking drugs that transitioned her from female to male. A decision that Keira severely regretted later on in her life.&nbsp;

Britain sizzled this year due to scorching heat waves. The temperatures shattered old records as the European nation struggled to deal with the sharp rise in mercury. Now, researchers at World Weather Attribution have revealed that climate change made the record heatwave ten times more likely.&nbsp;

The team of researchers found that if it had not been for climate change, caused by excessive human activities, the heatwave temperatures would have been 4ºC cooler.

To gauge whether the heatwave was a byproduct of climate change, the researchers compared climate as it is today with the climate of the past, say the industrial age, using weather data and computer simulations.

The results of the analysis were frightening, to say the least. Europe and other parts of the world are increasingly becoming hotter and experiencing frequent heatwaves, eclipsing the estimates made by several climate models.

The model results also suggested that there is a one per cent chance that such a heatwave could be repeated next year as well.&nbsp;

The world has already warmed by around 1.1ºC, since the beginning of the industrial age. The temperatures will continue to rise until worldwide governments drastically reduce emissions.

Such has been the effect of rising temperatures in the UK that communities have started requesting the government to draw up a heat risk strategy plan which included updating housing stock and ensuring new buildings cool down in hot weather.

Gardener Tray Veronica was stunned with a particular plant at a parish council display in Dorset, United Kingdom. She has a lot of experience identifying plants and she believed that six of the plants displayed at the parish were actually cannabis plants. This led to the parish coming up with an official statement and the plants were promptly removed. "I can identify most plants, so my head did a 360 when I spotted them in the council planter,” Veronica told BBC.

The village arranged a floral display in the parish and that was the first time that the plants were noticed by the West Parley Parish Council. According to the statement, they thought that one "may have been tampered with and amongst the flowers was a plant not part of this year's schedule".

"On the advice of the police, the plant was located, removed and has been secured by the parish council. An inspection has taken place of the parish's other planters, and this has not raised any further concerns," Councillor Andrew Parry, chairman of the council told BBC.

However, there were people who defended the parish for the oversight and stated that "the seeds are common in bird seed mixes and some find their way into flowerbeds and easily self-seed."

The race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has come down to former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Sunak emerged as the contender with the highest number of votes in the UK Conservative Party leadership race, but he believes that he will be going into the final vote as an “underdog”.

“Be in little question, I’m the underdog,” Sunak said in a speech in Grantham, central England, on Saturday according to Reuters.

Sunak led the leadership race in all five rounds and was able to hold his lead over the other contenders. The final vote to pick a successor for Boris Johnson will take place on September 5.

Rishi Sunak labels himself the underdog in race to become next UK Prime Minister

Boris Johnson received a huge round of applause from Conservative MPs when he concluded his last session of Prime Minister's Questions (PMQ) on Wednesday (July 20).&nbsp;

He was greeted with cheering and chanting (just not by Theresa May for obvious reasons) from his recently mutinous MPs as if nothing happened in the past three-four months and he is leaving with a squeaky clean image, which is not the case.&nbsp;

Johnson's tumultuous term was marred by scandals, controversies, sleaze and whatnot. But his Arnold Schwarzenegger-style exit after his last PMQ portrayed quite a different picture.&nbsp;

To a standing ovation, Johnson bowed out by saying: "Hasta la vista, baby!"&nbsp;

We all know this popular catchphrase said by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 science fiction action film 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'.&nbsp;

'Hasta la vista' is a Spanish term that translates to "see you later". If this is what Johnson meant, then it appears he is dreaming of returning to 10 Downing Street. Even some commentators have hinted that he would be back.&nbsp;

To be precise, at the end of his PMQ, he came up with another invocation of Arnie's famous catchphrase: "I'll be back."&nbsp;

I have followed UK politics very closely, since the 'Partygate' scandal was first reported. Johnson was slammed for his involvement in alcohol-fuelled, Covid lockdown-breaching parties.&nbsp;

I thought there would be an apology when Boris will wrap up the PMQ but it more or less looked like a soap opera or a dramatic Hollywood movie as he said "Mission largely accomplished - for now!"&nbsp;

If Hollywood is over with their love for Jane Austen adaptations, then 'Boris Johnson as PM' can be a good option.&nbsp;

Jokes apart, it was so shocking to see the MPs cheering for him as if they were not involved in bringing him down. When Rishi Sunak resigned as the finance minister, it led to a massive cabinet and ministerial walkout, eventually causing Johnson to resign.&nbsp;

Reports have even emerged that Johnson's Downing Street operation is running an "anyone but Rishi" campaign. Sunak faced accusations that he had conspired in the cabinet revolt.&nbsp;

But Boris praised the candidates who are battling to succeed him. The new leader is set to be announced on September 5.&nbsp;

Johnson's final PMQ
&nbsp;
On the day when the race to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom narrowed down to two — Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss - Boris delivered his final PMQ.&nbsp;

He said a lot of things, like telling his successor to "stay close to the Americans, stick up for the Ukrainians, stick up for freedom and democracy everywhere".&nbsp;

He told the PM candidates to "cut taxes and deregulate where you can to make this the greatest place to live and invest... focus on the road ahead but always remember to check the rearview mirror.&nbsp;

"And remember above all it's not Twitter that counts, it's the people that sent us here," he added.&nbsp;

Reflecting on his tenure, Boris said that "the greatest privilege" was the time in office. He also mentioned the Conservatives' landslide victory in the 2019 election and the Brexit deal.&nbsp;

He said: "We've transformed our democracy and restored our national independence... I've helped to get this country through a pandemic and helped save another country from barbarism -- and frankly that's enough to be going on with. Mission largely accomplished, for now."&nbsp;

Johnson defended his term

During his PMQ, Johnson defended his three tumultuous years in office - from Brexit to Covid vaccines to Britain's role during the Russia-Ukraine war. &nbsp;

But the question here is: Is Boris planning a comeback? His press secretary denied that he was already eyeing a political comeback. She said, "It was his way of saying farewell."&nbsp;

What will happen next, only time will tell. But it is for sure that at any rate, Boris is far from retired. He's definitely&nbsp;going to get book deals, writing and speaking fees in the millions.&nbsp;

Boris Johnson received a huge round of applause from Conservative MPs when he concluded his last session of Prime Minister's Questions (PMQ) on Wednesday (July 20). He was greeted with cheering and chanting (just not by Theresa May for obvious reasons) from his recently mutinous MPs as if nothing happened in the past three-four months and he is leaving with a squeaky clean image, which is not the case. Johnson's tumultuous term was marred by scandals, controversies, sleaze and whatnot. But his Arnold Schwarzenegger-style exit after his last PMQ portrayed quite a different picture. ALSO READ | It’s Truss vs Sunak for the battle to be Britain’s next Prime Minister To a standing ovation, Johnson bowed out by saying: "Hasta la vista, baby!" We all know this popular catchphrase said by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 science fiction action film 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'. 'Hasta la vista' is a Spanish term that translates to "see you later". If this is what Johnson meant, then it appears he is dreaming of returning to 10 Downing Street. Even some commentators have hinted that he would be back. To be precise, at the end of his PMQ, he came up with another invocation of Arnie's famous catchphrase: "I'll be back." ALSO READ | Liz Truss: Main contender against Rishi Sunak in race to become next UK PM I have followed UK politics very closely, since the 'Partygate' scandal was first reported. Johnson was slammed for his involvement in alcohol-fuelled, Covid lockdown-breaching parties. I thought there would be an apology when Boris will wrap up the PMQ but it more or less looked like a soap opera or a dramatic Hollywood movie as he said "Mission largely accomplished - for now!" If Hollywood is over with their love for Jane Austen adaptations, then 'Boris Johnson as PM' can be a good option. Jokes apart, it was so shocking to see the MPs cheering for him as if they were not involved in bringing him down. When Rishi Sunak resigned as the finance minister, it led to a massive cabinet and ministerial walkout, eventually causing Johnson to resign. ALSO READ | Rishi Sunak could become 11th Indian-origin leader in the world, joining 6 in office Reports have even emerged that Johnson's Downing Street operation is running an "anyone but Rishi" campaign. Sunak faced accusations that he had conspired in the cabinet revolt. But Boris praised the candidates who are battling to succeed him. The new leader is set to be announced on September 5. UK experiences hottest day on record as temperature reaches 40.2C in Heathrow

Britain’s former chancellor Rishi Sunak is leading the race to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. The Indian-origin leader has cemented his lead over four other rivals and has gained a sufficient lead in the first two rounds of voting.

Apart from former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the other hopefuls are Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt, UK foreign secretary Liz Truss, Chairman of foreign affairs committee Tom Tugendhat and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch.

In the first round, Sunak secured 88 votes followed by Trade minister Penny Mordaunt at 67. Meanwhile, in the second round, Sunak maintained the lead with 101 votes followed by Mordaunt at 83 votes.

Sunak who is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy is widely expected to make it to the final two candidates to be put to the party membership.

However despite the numbers on Sunak’s side, a snap YouGov poll of the Tory party has found that Trade minister Penny Mordaunt has a higher chance of winning the race than Sunak. Polls further suggest how Mordaunt is the bookie's favourite to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. Betting odds claim that Mordaunt has a 50 per cent&nbsp;chance of winning the election compared to Sunak at 34.7 per cent.

Until the past few months, Sunak was seen as the frontrunner to succeed Johnson but his popularity has taken a hit after he introduced several policies like national insurance rise which went down with the Tory MPs. Apart from this, the revelation that his wife the multimillionaire Akshata Murthy held non-domicile status which helped her evade paying UK tax was also brought to the table. However, this particular issue was raised by Sunak in the second round of televised debate where he asserted how he was proud of Murthy’s family and all that they have achieved.

So far there have been two rounds of voting and two televised debates out of which Sunak and Truss have emerged as front runners with Penny Mordaunt placed at third. The last televised debate saw some of the fiercest clashes between Sunak and Truss whose divisions on the economy and ways and means to combat inflation were laid bare.

Meanwhile, there have also been reports that have emerged on how Boris Johnson has privately told Tories to back anyone but Rishi Sunak for the country’s top post.

Despite mud-slinging and backbiting, the United Kingdom will have its new prime minister on September 5.
