Is the UK government working on 'war gamed' emergency plans to tackle energy blackouts?

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday (November 2) defended how his government handled Channel migrants. Sunak's remarks come amid building tensions to address the deteriorating conditions at a processing centre in southeast England.

The UK prime minister did admit that not enough asylum claims are being processed, but he promised to fix the system, stating channel crossings were a 'serious and escalating problem.'

Sunak noted that his government is taking "significant action" in order to improve conditions at a site for handling asylum seekers in Manston in Kent. It is the same place which was described last week as "pretty wretched" by David Neal, who is the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration.

While speaking at prime minister's questions in the House of Commons, Sunak responded to questions from Sir Keir Starmer as the Labour leader accused the government they have lost control, and also asked to replace Suella Braverman with a "proper home secretary".

Mentioning all the steps taken by the government, Sunak highlighted that since September 30 there are more hotels with four and a half thousand new beds, he said a senior general to control the situation at Manston has been appointed, and also increased the number of staff there.

The investigation into an incident in which petrol bombs were hurled into an immigration centre in the southern English port of Dover is now being handled by Britain's counterterrorism police.

Authorities on Tuesday said, "What appears clear is that this despicable offence was targeted and likely to be driven by some form of hate filled grievance, though this may not necessarily meet the threshold of terrorism."

UK: Counter-terrorism police take over probe of Dover immigration centre attack

So! What’s been happening so far in Old Blighty? Since Liz Truss was selected by her Tory party members in an internal election for prime minister; the queen is dead, the pound crashed along with the economy and subsequently mortgage rates increased considerably with many looking to lose their homes, while the cost-of-living crisis just got worse for citizens.

The Conservative & Unionist Party is now on its knees and going to lose the next general elections by a massive margin. The poll conducted by Electoral Calculus predicts a huge Labour landslide in the next General Election based on current opinion polling - far greater than even the majorities achieved by Tony Blair in 1997 and 2001.

The Scottish National Party is poised to be the main opposition with the Tories pushed in third place. The excuse that Russia is to be blamed for the markets collapsing and not the mini-budget announced in parliament by the now-sacked Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng after a mere 38 days, is proof that voters are not falling for this lie.

Liz Truss should have resigned along with her Chancellor, as it was her pledges and manifesto that she put forward during the election race. The Bank of England had to take an unprecedented step to intervene in order to stop the mortgage market from collapsing completely.

Jeremy Hunt was appointed as the new Chancellor and already he has managed to completely bin Liz Truss’s economic policies and promises including her mini-budget made during her election campaign within her party. While I am writing this Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned as home secretary and criticised PM Liz Truss in a blistering resignation letter.

Personally, I am glad to see her go just like Priti Patel her predecessor as they both were a stain on Indian heritage and culture while competing to be the evilest and non-compassionate Home Secretary’s ever elected. Under their inhumane immigration rules, their own parents would not be allowed into this country.

These individuals like many of their counterparts want to stop people fleeing persecution and torture including those legitimate ones looking to have a better life in this country. Both these individuals tried their very best to demonise and dehumanise refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants and fairly succeeded in raising the ante when it came to introducing brutal and inhumane policies. Grant Shapps has been appointed as the new home secretary and the Tory party musical chairs continue.

What happens next is anyone’s guess. A general election is on the cards and this country has another opportunity to change direction and tact while working with the European Union and all nations of the United Kingdom in bringing back justice, equality and dignity to all its citizens. Will the people now realise the folly of Brexit?

The Kremlin on Tuesday reiterated its accusations against the United Kingdom of being involved in the 'sabotage' of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. "Our intelligence services have data indicating that British military specialists were directing and coordinating the attack." Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP.

"There is evidence that Britain is involved in sabotage, in a terrorist attack on vital energy infrastructure, not just Russian, but international," he added. But Britain's defence ministry is yet to comment on the matter.

Earlier on November 29, the Russian defence ministry had accused British navy personnel blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September. "According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy took part in the planning, provision, and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year - blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines," the ministry had said.

Russia again accuses UK of 'directing and coordinating' Nord Stream blasts

Analysis of House of Commons library data has found that the political crisis in Britain could cost the taxpayer up to £709,000 in severance payments to former ministers and whips, UK-based media outlet Sky News reported.

Rishi Sunak on Tuesday (October 25) become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after a prolonged political crisis gripped the nation ever since reports emerged that multiple COVID-19 breaching parties were held at Downing Street when such gatherings were banned across the country.

Since the start of this year, 79 government ministers and whips have either resigned or been fired. But regardless of how long they worked in the office, 71 of them are probably eligible for payouts averaging more than £10,000. Two are reportedly returning the funds in full or in part.

Those who leave their positions within three weeks are not eligible to receive the lump amount. As long as they do not return to a paid government position by November 15, anybody who was let go by Sunak on Tuesday will be eligible for a reward, the report added.

The report says that its calculations are based on what they will be entitled to if they sit on the opposition benches throughout that time.

In the list, the report mentioned some names who are eligible: Brandon Lewis (£34,000), Liz Truss (£385 per day), Kwasi Kwarteng (£444 per day), Conor Burns (£7,290), Chris Pincher (£8,000).

The report also mentioned that some have rejected severance payments or donated them to charity.

After less than 36 hours as Boris Johnson's education secretary, Michelle Donelan was eligible for a salary of roughly £17,000, but she declined it. In July, she told Sky News: "I said that if I wasn't able to reject the money I would give it to a charity but I rejected it."

"It was taxpayers' money so I think it would be wrong for me to take taxpayers' money and then decide which charity I wanted to give it to so I was very clear that if I was able to reject it, then I would reject it, so I did," she added.

UK political crisis

The former finance chief has inherited the economy that was headed for a recession even before the recent turmoil triggered by Liz Truss. Data Monday showed Britain's economic downturn worsened in October, with private-sector output at a 21-month low.

"It was taxpayers' money so I think it would be wrong for me to take taxpayers' money and then decide which charity I wanted to give it to so I was very clear that if I was able to reject it, then I would reject it, so I did," she added. Sunak announced the decision in response to a question from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

“I have already said I stand by the manifesto on that. But what I would say is that I’m proud that this government has passed the landmark Environment Act, putting more protections for the natural environment than we have ever had with a clear plan to deliver,” he told the MPs.

“And I can give the honourable lady my commitment that we will deliver on all those ambitions. We will deliver on what we said at Cop [Cop26] because we care deeply about passing our children an environment in a better state than we found it ourselves,” Sunak added according to Sky News.

The United Kingdom is currently in the middle of an economic crisis which was made worse by former PM Liz Truss’ unfunded tax cuts. While the measures announced in the mini-budget resulted in both Truss and former finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng losing their jobs, they also propelled the fall of the British pound to its lowest against the United States dollar while drawing criticism from many financial institutions.

According to BBC, the plan will outline the government's plan to counter a budget shortfall that exceeds $45 billion. The measures are expected to include an interception by the Bank of England.

Rishi Sunak urges Conservative Party members to ‘unite or die’ ahead of becoming UK PM

Rishi Sunak seems all set to become the next British prime minister with the former finance minister gaining the support of several top leaders in the Conservative Party. Sunak’s bid was further strengthened on Sunday as former PM Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the leadership race.

Since Liz Truss resigned from the post following a torrid tenure, Johnson was being considered to be a tough opposition for Sunak in the race. However, the former Prime Minister decided to never launch his campaign stating that it was “simply not the right thing to do” and “not the right time”.

While 60 Conservative Party leaders publicly stated their support for Johnson to return to office, he claimed that he had the backing of 102 – enough to secure the mandate in the race.

“There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative party members, and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday.”

“But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.

“And though I have reached out to both Rishi and Penny – because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest – we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.

“Therefore, I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds. I believe I have much to offer, but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time,” Johnson said in his official statement on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sunak continued to bolster his support base with Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, current finance minister Jeremy Hunt and the home secretary Grant Shapps all announced their support for the Indian-origin politician. He was even supported by long-time critic Nadhim Zahawi.

He was even supported by long-time critic Nadhim Zahawi. With 100 votes needed to secure a victory, Sunak currently has around 165 supporters. According to sources at the Foreign Office, ministers are considering potential agreements with "third nations" willing to take the refugees, with Rwanda being one option. At least 120 Sri Lankans are believed to be housed in Diego Garcia, an island in the Chagos Archipelago.

UK's Rwanda-style plans to deport Lankan refugees to 'third country': Report

As the UK political crisis deepens, New York-based credit rating company Moody's Investors Service has downgraded the country's economic outlook from 'stable' to 'negative'.

Citing the lack of political stability in the UK as one of the fundamental reasons for shooting down the rating, Moody's released the outlook on Friday.

The agency said heightened unpredictability in policymaking with inflation touching new highs and growth prospects looking dim added to the overall decision.

"Risks to the UK's debt affordability from likely higher borrowing and risk of a sustained weakening in policy credibility," it said citing another reason for the downgraded outlook.

The agency said that the reversal will only be possible if the UK government is able to inspire confidence with its policymaking measures.

"The evolution of policymaking, and the UK government's ability to engender confidence in its commitment to fiscal prudence, will be a material consideration for Moody's in resolving the negative outlook."

"We delivered on energy bill and upon cutting taxes. But I recognise that given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate. I am resigning as the leader of the Conservative Party," Truss said during the press briefing.

Truss had a tricky start to her tenure after succeeding Boris Johnson and her economic measures were met with harsh criticism from all directions. The mini budget presented by former finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng included unfunded tax cuts worth nearly $45 million and it resulted in the pound dropping to its lowest against the United States dollar.

The criticism resulted in Kwarteng losing his position as finance minister and his successor - Jeremy Hunt - announced that the government will not be going forward with the economic measures previously announced.

The Brexit was an extremely polarising event in the British history and a new report shows that it led to a drop of almost 16 per cent trade from the United Kingdom to Europe. When it comes to trade from Europe to the UK, the figures showed that trade suffered by almost 20 per cent.

According to the report titled ‘How has Brexit changed EU-UK trade flows’, the trade between the UK and the rest of the world has somewhat been constant in comparison to other years. However, when it comes to Europe, the disparity in numbers shows a clear impact of the Brexit decision.

The study was published on Wednesday by the Economic and Social Research Institute.

The main reason behind the drop in trade is the impact of Brexit on the supply chains. With a number of borders coming under fresh consideration, the delivery of goods has taken a hit.

Peter Norris, co-convener of the Brexit monitoring group, the UK Trade and Business Commission, had also said that “recovering lost trade with Europe should be a top priority” for the country.

It was evident from the fact that one of the main countries with whom UK’s trade has suffered the most is Ireland. In the aftermath of Brexit, a lot has been discussed about the borders between UK and Ireland with the disruption in supply chain causing a major dent in the business relations.

The report by the Food Foundation charity showed that the situation has deteriorated in the past few months, and it was made worse by the cost of living crisis in the UK. The crisis has been brewing for quite some time now with the supply chain getting affected severely due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the war in Ukraine. A British MP accused one of China's most senior diplomats in the United Kingdom of being involved in the assault on a protestor at the Chinese consulate in Manchester.

Alicia Kearns, a Conservative MP, told the House of Commons that Zheng Xiyuan, China's consul-general in Manchester, attacked the protester and was even caught on camera. Earlier, the British foreign ministry summoned a senior Chinese diplomat after footage emerged showing “apparent scenes of violence”.

The video showed a protestor getting assaulted by people who came out of the consulate during a pro-Hong Kong democracy protest. In the aftermath of the incident, both the foreign office as well as the office of prime minister Liz Truss called the situation “concerning” and ordered further investigation.

British finance minister Jeremy Hunt said on Monday that the government will be reversing nearly all the tax cuts announced in the mini-budget. The measures which were introduced by former finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng were met with criticism and uproar from both political and public circles.

Among the measures which will be reversed by the British government, the most important ones are the reliefs on stamp duty paid on house purchases and the control on the rise of the National Insurance.

The other major measure which may face the axe in the near future is the lowering of the basic rate of income tax which Hunt explained will "indefinitely until economic circumstances allow for it to be cut".

Hunt explained that the scrapping of the measures taken by the Liz Truss government is expected to bring “confidence and stability" while adding that the economy "will always pay its way."

In the aftermath of the mini-budget, the pound fell to the lowest ever against the United States dollar and the tax cuts were criticised by several institutions including the International Monetary Fund.

Hunt also announced that the “energy price guarantee” to both businesses and households will be reconsidered as it is expected to cost the government around $67 million in the next few months.

Less than a month after communal tensions rocked the city of Leicester, United Kingdom, over 180 Hindu organisations and temples have written an open letter to the UK Prime Minister Lizz Truss.

Less than a month after communal tensions rocked the city of Leicester, United Kingdom, over 180 Hindu organisations and temples have written an open letter to the UK Prime Minister Lizz Truss. Reportedly, the letter written by Insight UK, a platform for British Hindus and British Indians was signed by 180 Hindu organisations and sought urgent action from targetted hate crimes against the community. “We write to draw your attention to the recent disturbances in Leicester, Birmingham and other towns which have greatly distressed the Indian and Hindu communities in the UK. Hatred towards the Hindu community is at an all-time high, to the point where there has been open violence, intimidation, and abuse levelled at Hindus through physical assaults, harassment on social media, and most recently through soft targeting in schools and the workplace,” read the letter. The letter added that the Hindu community feels like it is 'under a seige' and that many in the community have already left their neighbourhood due to fear. "This Hindu community now lives in a state of fear. While some families have already left the neighbourhood, many more are preparing to relocate. It is worth noting that a small, but highly organised band of radical Islamists took full advantage of the community tensions that existed between this marginalised Hindu community and their Muslim neighbours which previously lived in peace.” OPEN LETTER by INSIGHT UK, signed by 180 Hindu organisations to the PM of UK @trussliz. However, despite the low population, the community's socio-economic contribution was 'significantly higher'. It added that the government should help fund training for teachers so that they can identify and deal with anti-Hindu hatred in schools. “The above proposals and/or recommendations will go a long way in repairing the damage that has been done to so many by an extremist few." The genesis The violence first erupted in August after Pakistan defeated India in an Asia Cup cricket match. Several clips that went viral on social media showed violence breaking out after the cricket match. Afterwards, multiple reports of targeted attacks and incidents of vandalism against Hindu symbols were reported across the city. 'We're under seige', 180 Hindu groups write a letter to Truss, seek action for Leicester attacks

If there is such a thing as a perfect lack of timing, there must be a competition in that sphere in the United Kingdom between two of its most prominent ladies: Prime Minister Liz Truss (who holds the office as this is written but may not hang in there by the time of publication if critics are to be believed), and Home Secretary Suella Braverman (whose love of Britain seems far in excess of King Charles III, to paraphrase the old English saying about one being more loyal than the regent).

This is not an algebra column, but you need to solve the simultaneous equations of these two political variables to get a hang of the country whose economy is in shambles.

Puns and punchlines abound in the quest for an accurate description of the situation.

The venerable Economist magazine has spoken of "Truss deficit' as markets pounded the pound and the IMF grumbled about the large-scale tax cuts her weeks-old government delivered before reversing about half of it with the sacking of short-lived finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng. The chancellor's arrival was as much steeped in cluelessness as his departure.

I, for one, describe the Indian-origin Suella as a brave woman for declaiming that Indians tend to overstay their visas even as a free trade agreement (FTA) was being worked out between the former colony and its erstwhile coloniser. This could well be a self-goal because India can be a veritable asset for the post-Brexit UK trying to reinvent its economy from the mess created by London's exit from the European Union -- among other things.

Foolhardiness is another way to describe foot-in-the-mouth courage in angels-fear-to-tread situations. This brave woman called Ms Braverman is a sideshow in a larger Truss circus. It may be time to speak of clowns in the British jewel instead of Indian jewels in the British Crown.

I am no big expert on the details of Britain's complicated economy, but I do know that Brexit was caused by an existential crisis in a country whose elites are/were steeped in ideological confusion. What the follow-up required was a fine balancing act. What Ms Truss delivered was a bookish off-with-the-tax eagerness that reminded one of the infamous queen in Alice's Wonderland. Balancing act, balancing budgets: same thing.

Rishi Sunak, playing a good cop in Conservative Party, must be sitting in a corner trying to suppress a giggle because he is having an I-told-you-so-moment with respect to the woman who defeated him in party polls to become the PM. He has to first look serious and committed to Britain and its greatness to retain his chance of getting the chair he missed sitting on. But his supporters are making all the required noises on his behalf.

Without us stepping into the details, we can say Brexit was a lot about UK feeling uncomfortable with competition from immigrant citizens from the European Union that caused a close-call verdict. Only 51.8% of Britons in the 2016 referendum favoured the exit. Any sensible country would have had second thoughts because only 72% of eligible British citizens took part in that vote. But in the UK, promises are to be delivered in letter, not spirit. That has resulted in a procession of Brexiteer PMs that does not seem to end: Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss may be next? Truss had to deliver on the Tories' tax-cut promises, which turned out to be a case of cutting one's own nose to spite the face.

Xenophobia, a smug dislike of competition at the workplace, colonial-era hubris and plain mood swings seem to have enabled votes in favour of Brexit. But what stares us in the face is the fall in investment and productivity in the UK economy that is at the heart of the crisis.

Market fetishists believe in low fiscal deficits as a puller of foreign investment -- and the Truss tax cuts upset the fiscal balance for that. This is because right-wing orthodoxy believes that lower taxes lead to higher efficiency, less bureaucracy and the creation of wealth and capital that fuel more jobs. Things are not so simple. And even if true, that happens in the long run. A more pragmatic Tory like Sunak likes to have safety nets to protect the poorer sections (a completely relative term in Toryspeak).

That brings us to Ms Braverman. In order to boost productivity, Britain needs skilled workers who actually look forward to work, and India with its growing talent pool, is a good hunting ground for that. You know the basics: Indians are not usually tainted by tags of Islamic extremism (hence safe), they have the colonial-era English language comfort, and last but not least, UK universities routinely make Indian students employment-ready for Britain. In such a context, Ms Braverman saying what she said was ill-timed, ill-conceived, and yet factually accurate.

This then is the horrible truth of Britain's crisis. Two women did the correct thing that was simply not appropriate for the moment. Ms Truss went for tax cuts instead of a toil-and-tears speech and Ms Braverman seems to have confused the ubiquitous tourist or family visa seeker with the much-wooed Indian engineer or technologist -- with no clarification on the apparent stereotyping. Indian techies can boost British productivity at optimal costs while foreign investors appreciate red carpets that carry no banana peels -- which is what Trussonomics seems to have laid on UK's intended road to an economic rebound.

At the core of Tory economics is the need for market and social stability that Truss has lost sight of. At the core of ongoing FTA negotiations is the need to distinguish between productive business and unwanted immigration that Ms Braverman does not seem to be conscious of.

As wounds are licked and blames are apportioned in Britain's cantankerous democratic discourse, the simultaneous equations of the two ladies in question need to be solved by keeping in mind a simple rule of the game called democracy. You can't keep voters, financiers, nationalists and foreign investors all happy at the same time. This means taking one run at a time instead of trying to hit the ball out of the park. The latter would be risky baseball fit for America's vast fields, not a cold, beleaguered island. What Ms Truss and Ms Braverman have done, oh, well, is simply not cricket.

Reportedly, British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace informed about the decision saying the UK will provide Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) to Kyiv, ahead of a key NATO meeting scheduled to take place today. "Russia's latest indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas in Ukraine warrant further support to those seeking to defend their nation. So today I have authorised the supply of AMRAAM anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine." Read more: US, Germany promise to rush air defence systems to Ukraine as Russia pounds missiles Wallace said that the defence equipment will be delivered in the coming weeks and that AMRAAM can be used with the NASAMS air defence systems, reportedly, pledged by the United States. He added that other air defence missiles alongside aerial drones and a further 18 howitzer artillery guns will be sent. As reported extensively by WION, Russia has pounded Ukrainian cities with countless missiles in the aftermath of the Kerch bridge explosion. Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened 'severe' attacks on Ukraine if the 'terrorist' activities don't cease. "Let there be no doubt," Putin said, "if attempts at terrorist attacks continue, the response from Russia will be severe." Read more: Putin warns of more 'severe' attacks as Russian missiles pound Ukraine With Ukraine caught in a tough spot, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has pleaded with the West to provide arms and ammunition, especially the air defence systems. So far, the US, France, and Germany have pledged to deliver the systems. On Wednesday, Germany's Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said it had sent the first of four IRIS-T air defence systems to Kyiv. Read more: France to deliver air-defence systems to Ukraine in the coming weeks: Macron However, Ukraine needs the deliveries on a much more urgent basis. Since Monday, the Russian air attacks have killed 26 people while more than 100 have been injured. Cities and towns across the country have plunged into darkness as power supplies have been hit. Under pressure from most quarters for her tax-cut plans that have sent the economy into a downward spiral, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss vowed she will not cut public spending to make good on her plans on Wednesday.

Speaking for the first time in the House of Commons since the infamous mini-budget speech, Truss doubled down on her tax-cut plans while insisting that public spending will not be curtailed.

"Absolutely. What we will make sure is that over the medium term the debt is falling. But we will do that not by cutting public spending but by making sure we spend public money well," said Truss, adding that her policies would "protect our economy".

Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer, however, questioned the government's 'borrowing spree' which has left the currency, bond and other markets spooked.

The Labour leader called for a complete reversal of the $45 billion plan. Incidentally, the Truss government has not yet outlined the plan regarding how it will raise the money.

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has given October 31 as the deadline to outline the economic plan to stimulate growth.

While Truss denies that public spending will not be cut, some media reports have suggested that she will be uprating welfare payments in line with earnings rather than inflation, which experts believe is another ploy to cut public spending.

Plans to oust Truss have been discussed amongst the MPs if she continues to persist with her 'hara-kiri' policy. Truss, under her largely unfunded financial tax cut plan, is looking to find avenues to save money for the exchequer.

Research has shown that if Truss goes through with her plan, as many as 450,000 could be pushed into poverty.

The remains of more than 240 people, including children, have been discovered in the United Kingdom's Haverfordwest. Archaeologists found the skeletal remains at a site beneath a former department store in Pembrokeshire.

UK-based media outlets reported that the experts from Dyfed Archaeological Trust were exploring a medieval friary on the former site of the Ocky White department store.

As per the archaeologists, the ruins are from St Saviour's Priory. It was founded in about 1256 by a Dominican order of monks and one expert even claimed that the discovery has offered a "window into medieval Haverfordwest".

UK: Archaeologists find hundreds of skeletons beneath old department store in Pembrokeshire

United Kingdom intelligence chief warns that China's use of technology is a threat to global security as Beijing wants to use new technologies to repress dissent at home and spread its influence across the world.

According to the extracts of Jeremy Fleming's scheduled speech, he thinks that China is using its financial and scientific muscle from digital currencies to satellite systems to manipulate technologies. Fleming is the head of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

The excerpts released by his office stated: "They seek to secure their advantage through scale and through control. This means they see opportunities to control the Chinese people rather than looking for ways to support and unleash their citizens' potential."

"They see nations as either potential adversaries or potential client states, to be threatened, bribed, or coerced," the speech, which will be delivered by UK's spy chief on Tuesday in the annual security lecture at the Royal United Services Institute think tank, added.

Fleming will also say that China's "great strength combined with fear is driving China into actions that could represent a huge threat to us all" and will also include that Beijing's leadership was driven by a fear of their own citizens, "the whole open, democratic order and the international rules-based system."

China's use of technology is a threat to global security, warns UK spy chief

The tax cuts announced in the mini-budget by British finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng created a huge uproar among the public with the economy also taking a massive nosedive. Following the announcement, the pound fell to its lowest against the United States dollar and the move also earned a lot of criticism from financial institutions around the world including the International Monetary Fund.

While the steps were withdrawn, the Institute for Fiscal Studies believes that the tax cuts and borrowing triggered by the announcement can end up costing the UK government more than $66 billion.

According to the report published by the IFS, the United Kingdom may not match the predicted growth rate of 2.5 per cent and the deficit will cost around $66 billion by the year 2026. However, they included Brexit and the global financial crisis as other reasons behind the impending danger to the economy.

The announcement added to the concerns regarding the British economy as a deficit of $66 billion can virtually wipe out any progress made in the next few years. In that case, it will directly increase the national debt and if the trend continues, inflation can get out of control in that period.

Although things seem quite grim in the report, IFS director Paul Johnson said that the situation can be controlled by introducing spending cuts and creating a capital vacuum temporarily in the public sector.

Both Kwarteng and newly elected Prime Minister Liz Truss have said that the tax cuts are a non-negotiable policy decision for them, and they intend to implement them in the future.
