“Both sides have agreed to engage this week, for the first time really since mid-February,” Coveney told reporters in Dublin according to The Guardian.

British Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said that it has been a “tough day” as the government decided to not introduce the controversial tax cuts for high earners in the country. During his speech at the Conservative conference, Kwarteng said that the economic plan caused “a little turbulence”.

“It has been tough but we need to focus on the job in hand. We need to move forward. No more distractions. We have a plan and we need to get on and deliver it. That is what the public expect from the government,” the finance minister said according to The Guardian.

In the mini-budget, Kwarteng announced that they will be implementing a 45 per cent tax cut for the top earners. However, it was met with a lot of criticism from all sides and in the aftermath of the budget, the pound fell to a record low against the United States dollar last week.

With the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other major organisations not backing the move, the British government said on Monday that they will not be going forward with the tax cuts.

While the measures will not be implemented at the moment, the finance minister made it clear that the government will be looking to introduce tax cuts in a bid to boost the economy.

“Because with energy bills skyrocketing, a painful Covid aftermath, war on our continent, a 70-year-high tax burden, slowing global growth rates and glacially slow infrastructure delivery, we couldn’t simply do nothing. We can’t sit idly by. What Britain needs more than ever is economic growth.”

Liz Truss' government slammed for plans to scrap pesticide law after Brexit

It has been a tough week for newly elected British Prime Minister Liz Truss as her economic policies have come under severe criticism. Following up on campaign promises, finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng announced massive tax cuts in the mini-budget earlier this week but that was followed by the pound reaching an all-time low against the US dollar and the country facing a more acute economic crisis.

According to The Guardian, things are only getting worse as sources claimed that Truss and Kwarteng had a major argument on how to respond to the current situation. Sources in the civil service claimed that all was not well between the two leaders and later, Sky News said that Truss decided to not go with Kwarteng’s suggestion of making an official Treasury statement in an attempt to reassure the markets.

Downing Street has completely dismissed the reports by calling them “nonsense”. The official statement stated that Truss meets Kwarteng every day and there is no rift between them.

Both Truss and Kwarteng have been working together for quite some time now and they expanded on their economic vision in a book called “Britannia Unchained” which was released in 2012. The tax cuts were also planned by both leaders but the reactions to them have left them in a tough position.

In the aftermath of the announcements, the pound lost almost five per cent to reach $1.0327 – the lowest since 1971. However, Kwarteng played down the impact by saying that the government was concentrating on long-term gains rather than short-term goals.

Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng argue over response to UK economic crisis: Report

The British treasury has defended the country’s decision to announce big tax cuts in its latest mini budget after criticism from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Following the budget presented by finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng, the pound fell to an all-time low against the United States dollar.

"We have acted at speed to protect households and businesses through this winter and the next, following the unprecedented energy price rise," the Treasury said according to Sky News.

Earlier, The IMF said that it was not convinced with the latest measures announced by the UK.

The British government could fine TikTok up to $29 million following an investigation conducted by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) which showed that the company failed to protect children’s privacy. The ICO has already issued a “notice of intent” as the report by the data watchdog claimed that TikTok may have “breached data protection law between May 2018 and July 2020”.

While the fine cannot exceed four per cent of TikTok’s annual turnover, it can still be the biggest fine in history of the ICO beating the $20 million fine imposed on British Airways in 2020 due to an incident that led to hackers gaining access to personal details of more than 400,000 customers.

The social media platform has been facing a lot of criticisms around the world due to allegations of snooping and breaching data privacy laws. In the United Kingdom, the company was accused by the ICO of processing the data of children below the age of 13 without any “parental consent”.

“We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with proper data privacy protections. Companies providing digital services have a legal duty to put those protections in place, but our provisional view is that TikTok fell short of meeting that requirement,” information commissioner John Edwards told The Guardian when asked about the accusations.

TikTok did not agree with the ICO’s findings and said that they will answer “in due course”.

“This notice of intent, covering the period May 2018 – July 2020, is provisional and as the ICO itself has stated, no final conclusions can be drawn at this time,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“While we respect the ICO’s role in safeguarding privacy in the UK, we disagree with the preliminary views expressed and intend to formally respond to the ICO in due course,” the company said.

Britons have less than a week to spend old paper banknotes worth £11 billion

Britain on Wednesday launched a six-month plan starting in October to pay about half of energy bills for businesses, as Prime Minister Liz Truss seeks to stop companies going under as a result of rocketing prices.

The news precedes a mini-budget Friday when finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng is expected to unveil tax cuts to help a nation struggling with decades-high inflation.

Wholesale electricity and gas prices for businesses -- except the energy sector -- as well as charities, hospitals and schools will be capped at half the expected cost on the open market, the government said in a statement.

The announcement comes after Truss launched plans for a two-year household energy price freeze which also starts next month.

"We have stepped in to stop businesses collapsing, protect jobs and limit inflation," Kwarteng said Wednesday.

The chancellor of the exchequer will Friday set out the overall cost of both energy freeze schemes.

His budget will seek to boost economic growth amid forecasts that Britain will this year sink into recession on sky-high energy bills fuelled by the invasion of Ukraine by major oil and gas producer Russia.

'Eases worries'

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) welcomed Wednesday's announcement.

"The package will ease worries about otherwise viable businesses shutting-up shop," said Matthew Fell, chief policy director at the lobby group.

The CBI meanwhile urged a long-term energy solution to increase Britain's supplies while ramping up efficiency measures to lower demand.

Truss took office on September 6, two days before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, after winning an election of Conservative party members on a tax-cutting platform.

She is committed to scrapping planned tax hikes on both company profits and salaries that predecessor Boris Johnson signed off upon.

Media reports suggest that the government will also scrap an EU limit on bankers' bonuses following Brexit.

On the London stock market, homebuilders saw their shares rebound on speculation that Truss could cut tax levied on purchases of residential properties.

Trickle-down economics

The tax-cutting plans like those proposed by Truss have come in for criticism from US President Joe Biden, who spoke out against the policy of "trickle-down economics" favoured by the Democrat's Republican opponents.

The approach hinges on hopes that policies which immediately boost the wealthy will trickle down the economy to reach the less well-off.

"I am sick and tired of trickle-down economics. It has never worked," Biden had tweeted on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of Biden's tweet, Truss addressed this point.

"I don't accept this argument that cutting taxes is somehow unfair," she told Sky News earlier this week.

"What we know is people on higher incomes generally pay more tax.

"So when you reduce taxes, there is often a disproportionate benefit because those people are paying more taxes in the first place," she added.

The two leaders meet Wednesday at the UN in New York.

A day later, the Bank of England is expected to once more ramp up its main interest rate in a bid to dampen sky-high inflation.

Economists warn that the UK's cost-of-living measures will ravage public finances already reeling from pandemic expenditure.

Analysts from British bank Barclays estimate the cost of the government's total spending could hit £235 billion ($267 billion).

While official data Wednesday showed British public borrowing improved in August, it is expected to surge as the government funds the planned tax cuts.

Public sector net borrowing, the state's preferred measure of the deficit, hit £11.8 billion last month, the Office for National Statistics said.

That was down from £14.4 billion a year earlier but was far more than its pre-pandemic 2019 level of £5.3 billion.

UK govt to pay half of winter energy bills incurred by businesses

As Brazil gears up for its highly polarised presidential election, incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro has seemingly taken his campaign to a rather bizarre level.

As Brazil gears up for its highly polarised presidential election, incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro has seemingly taken his campaign to a rather bizarre level. Bolsonaro, who was in the UK to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, shot a video at a fuel pump in London and used it as an opportunity to show how expensive fuel was in the UK compared to Brazil. The far-right leader stood at the fuel pump and pointed at the price board while shooting a video. Bolsonaro stated that the 161.9 pence per litre cost of the fuel was 'practically double the average of many Brazilian states'. Bolsonaro further bragged that fuel in his country was among the cheapest in the world. Reportedly, the video was posted a night before the Queen's state funeral service. É fácil comparar a situação do Brasil com todos os Países do mundo para sabermos se estamos no rumo certo. O problema é que sequestraram a mídia e deixaram de discutir economia para discutir “palavrão”. pic.twitter.com/9FLQYT7pIK — Fábio Faria 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 (@fabiofaria) September 18, 2022 × Apart from shooting the video, Bolsonaro also gave politically charged statements which included the usual sermons on abortion and gender ideology. “We’re on the right path. We are a country that does not want to discuss the legalisation of drugs, that does not want to discuss the legalisation of abortion and a country that does not accept gender ideology. Our slogan is: God, homeland, family and freedom,” said Bolsonaro at Mayfair home, situated less than four kilometres from Westminster Hall where the Queen was kept in the coffin. As reported extensively by WION, Bolsonaro is facing a stiff competition from leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. As per a report by SkyNews, dealers are now using social media to peddle drugs to children. These contain cannabis and are packaged in appealing candy wrappers, which are predictably appealing to kids. In recent days, six children had to be sent to the hospital after eating these; one of them was just eight years old.

The "candies" are frequently advertised and offered for sale alongside class A substances like heroin, cocaine, LSD, and copious amounts of marijuana.

While some CBD-infused goods are available legally in stores across the nation, these candies contain significant concentrations of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that is used to "get high".

Cannabis edibles, according to Detective Chief Inspector Rob Burns of Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), are illegal and can cause adverse reactions like unconsciousness.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 was immediately followed by the announcement of her eldest son – Charles – succeeding her. King Charles III was the heir apparent since the age of three and a formal proclamation of his ascension will be made at a council at St James’ Palace.

However, a formal coronation may not feature in the immediate plans of the British royal family. In case of Queen Elizabeth II herself, it took around 16 months since she became queen to organise the event which was attended by major dignitaries and major leaders from all parts of the world.

The first thing that will happen after the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is the meeting of the privy council – the people advising monarchs on matters of the state. According to The Guardian, it generally comprises of mayors, House of Lords and high commissioners of Commonwealth nations.

King Charles III is expected to take an oath to preserve the Church of Scotland. He will also be making a similar oath regarding the Church of England but that takes place in the parliament.

The Guardian further reported that a carriage procession will be carried out after the official proclamation, and it will cover all major parts of London with troops standing on both sides.

Boris Johnson promises full support for Liz Truss, describes himself as 'booster rocket'

After months of campaigning and hustings, the UK has a new Prime Minister and it is not former chancellor Rishi Sunak. The Tory leader was a clear favourite at the beginning of the election trail.

After months of campaigning and hustings, the UK has a new Prime Minister and it is not former chancellor Rishi Sunak. The Tory leader was a clear favourite at the beginning of the election trail. However, somewhere along the way, Sunak lost the plot and surrendered the initiative to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who never let go of the momentum. What were the reasons that Sunak and his popularity amongst the conservatives dived so steeply? WION takes a look and explores. Tax laundering One of the biggest thorns in Sunak's election campaign has been unfortunately his wife Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire and Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. According to a report by The Guardian, Rishi was forced to explain details about how he managed his family's fortune, which is said to total $840 million and has led to him being routinely referred to as the UK’s richest MP. The majority of Sunak's fortune were derived from his marriage to Akshata who owns a 0.93 per cent stake worth $794 million in Infosys. Live updates | Liz Truss becomes new UK PM after beating Rishi Sunak Reports of Akshata touted to be wealthier than British Queen Elizabeth II with assets worth $495 million, according to Sunday Times were not received well by the masses. Moreover, Akshata was able to save millions of pounds in tax on dividends, which were collected from her family's IT business. Last year, she earned a dividend payment worth 11.6 million pounds ($15.1 million) as she owns about 0.9 per cent of Indian IT giant Infosys. After the issue snowballed into a major controversy, Akshata agreed to pay more tax on foreign income. However, the damage had been done by then. Read more: British finance minister Rishi Sunak's wife agrees to pay more tax on foreign income Sunak's tax cuts One of the biggest policy decisions to turn the tide in Truss' favour was Sunak's opposition to not cutting taxes. However, his counterpart, Truss believes that tax cuts will lead to extra spending and tax revenues and rescue the economy. While Truss' populist measure of immediate tax cuts has not received the approval of the economists, it sure has increased her popularity amongst the conservative vote base. It was at this stage that Truss started to pull away from Sunak in the race. Sensing that the margin was widening, Sunak and his team took a volte-face and announced that if elected to power, he will reduce the basic rates of income tax by 20 per cent by 2029. Read more: Trailing in UK PM race, Rishi Sunak promises 'radical' 20% income tax cuts Sunak stated that his immediate target was tackling inflation. However, once that is achieved, his government will slash one pence off income tax in 2024, as announced in his tenure as the chancellor. Afterward, another three pence will be struck off the income tax, come 2029. Additionally, Sunak pledged to scrap VAT on energy bills having vociferously opposed it for months. The green card controversy While the Akshata Murthy tax laundering controversy had barely died down, Sunak was quickly left red-faced as reports emerged suggesting that Sunaks had retained their US green cards, even after returning to Britain. Top members of the Conservative Party dashed his hopes of becoming the PM by questioning his commitment to the UK. “He (Sunak) has shown colossal naivety and the way he has arranged his affairs does not suggest he is even committed to the UK, but that he is keeping open the option of a career in finance in the United States,” a senior Tory leader told The Observer. It was only after much public and media pressure that Sunak confirmed he gave up the "green card" for the United States after he became Britain's finance minister. Sunak's lavish lifestyle As reported by WION, in July, Sunak visited a building site in Teesside, Northern England where he was spotted wearing $595 Prada suede loafers. The Conservative party leader was visiting Teesside to gather the support of Mayor Ben Houchen. However, more than the visit, it was Sunak's "pricey" loafers that grabbed the eyeballs. Read more: Tory leader Rishi Sunak wears $595 Prada loafers on a visit to a building site And this was not the first time that Sunak had garnered headlines for his expensive tastes. In 2020, as the Chancellor of the country, he was spotted using a $220 mug in the traditional pre-Budget photograph. Sunak didn't learn his lessons and came under fire last month as well for spending over $4,80,000 (£400,000) on a pool at his North Yorkshire property as UK residents braced for another heatwave and a rise in the cost of living. Read more: UK: Rishi Sunak's opulent private pool amid rising cost of living sparks row Sunak's aristocratic style Similarly, when Sunak decided to run for the Prime Minister's job, a clip from a video documentary went viral on social media platforms where Sunak could be seen talking about his "aristocratic" friends. "I have friends who are aristocrats, I have friends who are upper-class, I have friends who are, you know, working-class. Well, not working class," Sunak said in the BBC documentary titled 'Middle Classes- Their Rise & Sprawl'. The full Sunak clip is even more toe-curling pic.twitter.com/vIVI6UTPun — Conor Gogarty (@ConorGogarty) July 9, 2022 × He further remarked in the clip, "I mix and match and then I go to see kids from an inner-city state school and tell them to apply to Oxford and talk to them about people like me. And then I shock them at the end of chatting to them for half an hour and tell them I was at Winchester and one of my best friends is from Eton or whatever. And then they're like, 'Oh OK'." The video had brought a lot of flak for Sunak who was dubbed being as out of touch from reality. Since then, Sunak and his PR team had attempted to change the narrative by selling him as the 'underdog'. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Five reasons why Rishi Sunak lost the UK Prime Minister election

The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Liz Truss defeated rival Rishi Sunak to be named the new British prime minister on Monday (September 5). She succeeds Boris Johnson who was forced out following a string of controversies.

The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Liz Truss defeated rival Rishi Sunak to be named the new British prime minister on Monday (September 5). She succeeds Boris Johnson who was forced out following a string of controversies. After the result was announced, Truss said, "We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years. I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy." "I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people's energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply," she added. Truss is Britain's third female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher (Conservative, 1979-90) and Theresa May (Conservative, 2016-19). But the road ahead is not going to be easy as she has a mammoth task to address multiple crises that the nation is facing on different fronts. Surging energy prices At the moment, the UK is facing multiple crises. The economy is forecast to go into a long recession later this year with inflation at a 40-year high. The new PM will have to tackle the energy crisis and a productivity crisis as both have affected people's living standards. Britain's energy regulator announced that the power bills will jump 80 per cent to an average of 3,549 pounds ($4,188) a year from October. This will send millions of households into fuel poverty. Businesses are also at risk unless the government intervene and comes up with a solution. ALSO READ | Liz Truss elected new UK Prime Minister, beats Rishi Sunak in leadership race Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, supplies are down nearly 50 per cent this year. There are chances that Moscow will cut off all gas supplies this winter. Just like Germany, France and Spain, the UK also needs an urgent crisis plan. In a research note, Goldman economists said, "In a scenario where gas prices remain elevated at current levels, we would expect the price cap to increase by over 80 per cent in January (vs 19 per cent assumed in our baseline). (This) would imply headline inflation peaking at 22.4 per cent, well above our baseline forecast of 14.8 per cent." Inflation The Bank of England has anticipated that as the energy crisis intensifies, inflation will jump to 13 per cent. According to Citigroup, the nation could peak at 18 per cent in early 2023. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs warned that it could reach 22 per cent if the natural gas prices "remain elevated at current levels". At 10.1 per cent in July, Britain had the highest rate of annual inflation among Group of Seven advanced economies. High dependency on imported gas and a fast-weakening currency are some of the reasons for British inflation. In the last three months alone, the pound fell to almost 8 per cent against the dollar. This performance is worse than the euro or even the Japanese yen. If this scenario continues to worsen, it will make the imports of energy priced in dollars even more expensive. ALSO READ | What does Liz Truss's victory mean for UK-India ties? Brexit The new UK PM backed remaining in the European Union before the 2016 referendum on membership of the bloc, but she had switched sides after the public voted to leave. Now, she has spearheaded proposed legislation to override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol the UK signed with the EU governing current trade in the province. She has promised to take all EU laws off the UK statute book to help "turbocharge" growth. Truss has made no proposals to address chronic post-Brexit labour shortages in the UK, particularly of seasonal workers. Defence Truss plans to designate China as a threat to national security, but looking at other issues, this shouldn't be the priority for the UK right now. While campaigning, she had said that as PM, she would increase defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP by 2030 from 2.3 per cent of GDP projected this year. UK's health regulator National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) on Wednesday gave the green light to medical practitioners to use a treatment process which involves poo transplant to treat patients struggling with superbugs.

It may sound a tad dirty at the outset to the readers but the doctors will be using faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) to treat patients who have been unsuccessfully treated for two or more Clostridium difficile (C diff) infections.

In the treatment, which is being dubbed revolutionary, the gut bacteria of a sick and unhealthy patient will be restored from the gut bacteria and other microorganisms of a healthy donor's poo.

According to doctors, C diff is a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhoea and often affects those above the age of 65, having weakened immune systems.

The situation can be treated easily using antibiotics. However, in some cases, the bacteria becomes highly resistant to the antibiotic, thereby earning the sobriquet of a superbug.

It is pertinent to note that superbugs are strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites that are resistant to most antibiotic medicines.

According to Nice, the gut bacteria from the poo of a healthy donor can be delivered to the patient using three different methods.

Firstly, using a tube which is inserted directly into the stomach through the nose. Secondly, it can be deposited directly into the colon through a tube. Thirdly, a simple pill that can be swallowed.

The decision to go ahead with the FMT process was only taken after reviewing evidence from five trials involving over 274 adults. According to the data, the treatment can cure up to 94 per cent of infections.

It's beginning to seem as though nothing will be able to stop the British pound from reaching new lows.

The UK's economic problems are getting worse by the day, with predictions of inflation exceeding 18% next year and the likelihood that households everywhere may experience energy poverty this winter. Traders agree that in order to control pricing pressures, the Bank of England will be forced to plunge the country into a deep recession and result in massive job losses.

As per Bloomberg reports, It has enabled the pound to reach historic lows. “Is there more downside? Yes, absolutely,” said Geoff Yu, senior currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon Corp. “Even if things improve, sterling can’t return to where it was in the past of $1.40 or $1.45. That’s going to be very hard to achieve.”

Rishi Sunak's chances 'impacted' by his references to Silicon Valley in California: Report

The discharge of raw sewage by British authorities in shared waters have irked a lot of European nations after Brexit. According to media reports, a number of countries believe that the environmental standards in this case have gone down considerably when it comes to the UK and French lawmakers have now urged the European Union to take steps against this practice.

Three French politicians submitted a letter to EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius on Saturday, stating that the practice of dumping raw sewage into the waters can be hugely harmful to the marine life and requested them to take strict actions to protect the biodiversity.

The migrant crossover across the English Channel is swelling up, breaking new records in the process. Reportedly, on Monday, a record number of 1,300 migrants crossed the Channel in 27 small boats, beating the previous record of 1,185 set in November last year.

The total for the year, up until August has reached well over 22,557 migrants. Comparatively, only 28,526 migrants crossed the Channel last year, while the number stood below 9,000 in 2020.

Experts related to the matter believe that with four months remaining in the year and migrants coming at a pace never seen before, the total could rise to 60,000.

The UK government had brought the Rwanda Policy to act as a deterrent. However, before the government could send the first deportation flight, it was grounded due to legal challenges. Reportedly, under several hundred ongoing projects of the UK Biobank, researchers in China have been accessing 'detailed genetic information' and other health-related data of UK citizens.

According to UK Biobank, the data is shared under its anonymised, transparent and non-discriminatory open-access policy for studies related to cancer, depression and even Covid-19.

When quizzed about the security of the data, UK Biobank claimed it had “stringent controls” in place including “rigorous access and ethics checks”.

It is pertinent to note that the UK Biobank Project, launched in 2006 and partly funded by the department of health, stores in-depth genetic information of close to half a million Britons. This data can easily be misused to cause damage.

From 2012 to 2019, during the peak of UK-China medical collaborations, China gained access to much of UK Biobank's database. However, after the geopolitical equations realigned, the experts in the UK have been urging the government to stop the sharing of data, even if for collaborative research purposes.

Professor Yves Moreau, a geneticist, warned caution over the sharing of data and stated that the UK needed to be watchful.

“We are totally unprepared for a situation where an institution and national authorities would support the misconduct of the scientist. It’s about being watchful, and looking into the issue to find a proper balance, so we don’t wake up in 10 years and realise, ‘Oh, what did we do?,’” he was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

For an arrangement that relies heavily on the tenets of sharing detailed private medical information of individuals, the UK could not have picked a worse partner than China.

After the pandemic started raging in early 2020, countries across the globe urged China to come clean regarding the origins of the virus. However, not only China remained opaque, it did not share medical data with researchers across the planet, thereby allowing the virus to metamorphose into a global pandemic.

China has been routinely accused by countries such as the US of trying to steal gene data from across the globe. Moreover, in 2020, it was revealed that the Politburo had passed orders, allowing the collection of blood samples from men and boys from across the country to build a genetic map of its roughly 700 million males.

Experts urge UK to rethink its genetics data sharing policy with China

Millions in Britain are braving for a much colder winter as sky-high energy prices are set to make it unaffordable for the majority to heat their homes. To provide an alternative, Britain's libraries and museums have stepped up, dubbing themselves as 'warm havens'. Reportedly, these public buildings will form a part of a network across the country, providing warm shelters to people to avoid the frigid cool temperatures outside. The main attempt of such 'warm havens' will be to help reduce excess winter deaths. In Pics | As it happened: Heatwave 2022 — 'Monster wildfire' in France, drought in England, China's Yangtze river shrinks “We are acutely aware of the huge impact that the energy crisis will have on many living within the local community. We will be promoting our libraries as designated ‘warm spaces’ for those who can’t afford to heat their homes.” said a library owner who had already spent $33,000 on new seats and furniture, anticipating the increase in visitors. While the onus is being put on the public buildings to fill the void, their own energy bills are touching record highs. Hence the ministers across the UK are being urged to release immediate funding, directed towards the public buildings. It is pertinent to note that while UK-based energy companies such as Centrica and Shell are having bumper profitable quarters, an average UK household is expected to shell as much as $5,000, come the winters. UK natural gas prices have risen nearly 96 per cent in the year to July, while electricity prices are up 54 per cent. However, compared to other European countries, the energy bill prices in the UK have soared the most. Up until last year, Russia supplied the European Union, which the UK was part of once, with 40 per cent of its gas needs. However, that figure has dropped drastically this year as Russia continues to use its position of leverage to hurt Europe for supporting Ukraine. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
