The Kremlin announced Sunday (April 12) that Russia will not extend the 32-hour Orthodox Easter truce with Ukraine unless President Volodymyr Zelensky yields to its long-standing demands, signalling a return to full-scale hostilities. "Sustainable peace can come when we secure our interests and achieve the goals we set from the very start. This can be done literally today. But Zelensky must accept these well-known solutions," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russian news agencies. "Until Zelensky musters the courage to assume this responsibility, the special military operation will continue after the truce expires," Peskov added, referring to the war in Ukraine. This hardline stance follows a fragile period of a limited ceasefire that was due to expire at the end of Sunday. While President Zelensky initially proposed the truce and Vladimir Putin later ordered it as a "humanitarian" gesture, it was marred by immediate reports of violations. Kyiv accused Russian forces of continuing drone strikes in several regions shortly after the ceasefire began Saturday afternoon, while Moscow countered with its own claims of nearly 2,000 Ukrainian violations. As the religious holiday concludes, the refusal to extend the pause suggests a grim outlook for diplomatic breakthroughs, with both sides reporting the commitment of strategic reserves to the front lines. The war between Russia and Ukraine entered its fifth year, with negotiations involving US officials and delegations from both nations continuing despite a battlefield deadlock. American-led talks in Geneva have struggled to find common ground, as Moscow demands territorial concessions that Kyiv rejects. These efforts are further complicated by the 2026 West Asia conflict, which has diverted global diplomatic focus and bolstered Russia's economy through rising energy prices.

The scheme is inspired by a similar scheme in Australia, which the government described as an "exciting model from which to learn". Other European countries have looked to national service in response to the threat from Russia, with France, Germany and Belgium introducing schemes this year. The British government statement outlining the scheme did not mention the salary offered to recruits or how funding will be found to pay for this. Further details about the scheme will follow "in due course", a government spokesperson told AFP.

Figures released by Britain's defence ministry in November show that its army trained around 38 per cent fewer recruits in 2022-2023 than in 2019-2020, with a growing share leaving during training compared with pre-pandemic levels.

The United States is set to ask Ukraine to cede major land and slice its army by more than half, according to a report citing people in the know. The new US peace proposal, as per the AFP report, echoes Russia's own maximalist terms. It surfaced on the same day a Russian strike hit the western city of Ternopil, killing 26 people, including three children. While Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, saying the victims were people asleep in their homes, UN human rights chief Volker Turk said he was appalled by the civilian toll.
What does the new Russia-Ukraine peace proposal propose?
It calls for "recognition of Crimea and other regions that the Russians have taken", cutting Ukraine’s armed forces to roughly 400,000 personnel, and giving up all long-range weapons. The official who chose to stay anonymous said it was unclear whether the plan came directly from President Donald Trump or from people around him. "An important nuance is that we don't understand whether this is really Trump's story" or "his entourage's".At the same time, there is no clarity either on what Russia would offer in return. Previously, Axios reported that Moscow and Washington had been working on a secret plan to end the almost four-year-war. However, neither country has confirmed.
Zelensky in Türkiye
The diplomatic confusion landed just as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky travelled to Turkey, hoping to draw Washington back into the peace process. Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff who was expected to be there, however, skipped the talks. At the same time, US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll led a Pentagon team to Kyiv for meetings with senior Ukrainian officials. Ukraine’s top commander, Oleksandr Syrsky, said the talks were productive and stressed that air defence, long-range strike capability, and said: ""I once again stressed that reinforcing the protection of Ukraine’s airspace, expanding our long-range strike capabilities against enemy military targets and maintaining and stabilising the front line will undermine the offensive potential of the adversary."

US to push Russia's 'maximalist terms,' ask Ukraine to cede territory, halve army: Report

US President Donald Trump says he may send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, warning that continued war could trigger stronger American support for Kyiv. The comment followed a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is expected to visit Washington on Friday. The Kremlin has called the possible missile transfer a serious escalation, raising fears of wider conflict. Tomahawks could give Ukraine the ability to strike targets deep inside Russia, including Moscow.

Ukraine has upgraded its domestically produced Neptune anti-ship missile, the same missile it had used to sink 'Moskva' the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet in April 2022. While the earlier version of the Neptune missile had a maximum range of about 300 kilometres, the upgraded Neptune missile as per reports has the capability of hitting targets up to 1,000 kilometres away. The ameliorated version of domestically produced Neptune missiles has become an object of fascination after it made an appearance in an Instagram day video published by state-run weapons portal Zbroya on Ukraine's Independence Day. Here's all we know about Neptune 2.0 missiles.
What can 'Long Neptune' do? Its specifications REVEALED!
The newly unveiled missile has been informally dubbed 'Long Neptune, ' reports Defence Express. Why? Because it is believed to be an upgraded version of the original anti-ship Neptune missile.According to Kyiv Independent, the exact specifications of the new Neptune missiles have not been revealed. However, in a March 2025 speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the upgraded missile can strike targets up to 1,000 kilometres away. The new Ukrainian weapon might have the capability to accommodate a warhead containing more explosives or a hardened penetrator, or a new guidance system, suggests Militarnyi. Also read | Explained | Why Trump fired Fed Governor Lisa Cook — and why she says he can't. Here's what US Constitution says
Difference between Neptune missiles and new Long Neptune missiles
The Neptune missile is a domestic anti-ship missile with a range of 25 kilometres from the coast and a maximum range of 300 kilometres. It is based on the Soviet Kh-35 anti-ship missile. The missile can carry a warhead payload of 150 kg (331 lbs). In April 2022, the anti-ship missile was used to take down the Moskva, which at the time was the largest warship Russia lost in combat since World War II. The first test of the missile was reportedly conducted in 2016, with a few tests later in subsequent years. In comparison, the new Neptune missile is believed to boast a range of up to 1,000 kilometres. The missile was presumably used in May 2025 to carry out a strike on the Russian naval port of Novorossiysk under one of the longest range—over 750 kilometres— conventional missile strikes carried out by Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. This upgraded missile, as per reports, may be able to carry a warhead payload of around 350 kg (794 lbs). However, the final payload remains unspecified. Also read | Protecting Putin?
Why is Ukraine's new Neptune missile a big deal?
The unveiling of the domestically made long-range missile coincides with Zelensky's remark that Ukraine now possesses its own long-range weaponry. This comes on the heels of reports suggesting that the United States, since late spring, has quietly restricted Ukraine from using American-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia. America has also reportedly restricted Ukraine's use of all foreign technology that uses American intelligence and components. The same restrictions also cover Britain's Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which rely on American targeting data.Watch | Russia Unveils “Sea Terminator”: Hypersonic Missile Warship Targets Subs & Aircraft Carriershttps://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-unveils-sea-terminator-hypersonic-missile-warship-targets-subs-aircraft-carriers-wion-1756189742371/embed

Ukraine has upgraded its Neptune anti-ship missile, now with a 1,000 km range. Dubbed 'Long Neptune,' the new weapon has been seen in an Instagram video and is believed to be a stunning upgrade to R-360 Neptune. Here's everything we know about Ukraine's new Neptune missile.

Why? Because it is believed to be an upgraded version of the original anti-ship Neptune missile. According to Kyiv Independent, the exact specifications of the new Neptune missiles have not been revealed. Here's what US Constitution says Difference between Neptune missiles and new Long Neptune missiles The Neptune missile is a domestic anti-ship missile with a range of 25 kilometres from the coast and a maximum range of 300 kilometres. Russia said Ukraine launched a wave of drone strikes on Sunday (August 24), hitting targets across several regions. One drone detonated close to the Kursk nuclear power plant, just 60 km from the Ukrainian border, damaging an auxiliary transformer. This forced reactor No. 3 to run at half its normal capacity. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was aware of the incident and stressed that “every nuclear facility must be protected at all times”. The UN agency has repeatedly urged both Moscow and Kyiv to avoid fighting near nuclear plants. Also read: 'Ukraine hasn't won yet, but certainly won't lose': Zelensky speaks at Independence Day celebrations, warns Russia amid raging war
Massive blaze at Russian fuel terminal
Russian officials also confirmed a huge fire broke out at the Ust-Luga fuel export terminal after another drone strike. Ukraine has revealed a powerful new cruise missile, the Flamingo FP-5, capable of striking targets more than 3,000 kilometres inside Russian territory. The missile, developed entirely by Ukraine’s Fire Point defence company, can carry a massive 1,150-kilogram warhead, making it one of the country’s most destructive weapons yet. Iryna Terekh, Fire Point’s CEO and technical director, told Politico, “We did not want to go public with this one, but it seems to be the right time. During their recent meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with a detailed map of Ukraine, highlighting areas under Russian control.

Trump-Zelensky Meet: Trump Shows Ukraine Map to Zelensky Highlighting Putin’s Control

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday to talk about ending the war in Ukraine. Several European leaders also came to Washington, just days after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which did not bring a ceasefire. Even though Trump sounded hopeful, and European leaders were more cautious, by Monday evening there were no clear promises of security guarantees or a peace deal.
Here are the main points from the talks:
1. A Putin-Zelensky meeting on the cards? After the summit, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had called Putin to start planning a meeting between the Russian leader and Zelensky. Trump said that after this one-on-one meeting, there could be a three-way meeting where the US president would also join.A Putin adviser later said that Trump and Putin had spoken for 40 minutes on Monday. Before the European leaders met Trump in the East Room of the White House, a hot mic caught a private chat between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. “I think he wants to make a deal. I think he wants to make a deal for me. You understand that? As crazy as that sounds,” Trump told Macron, speaking about Putin. (Here, Trump is suggesting that Putin might agree to talks mainly to give Trump the credit of being a peacemaker, rather than out of genuine interest in ending the war.) It is still uncertain how easy it will be to bring the two bitter enemies together at the negotiating table for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. For months, Zelensky has been asking to meet Putin, mainly to prove that Russia is not serious about peace, since he believes the Kremlin has no real interest in such talks. Moscow has repeatedly rejected the idea of a Putin-Zelensky meeting. A Kremlin aide, Yuri Ushakov, gave a noncommittal statement on Monday night, saying it might be “worthwhile” to “explore the possibility” of sending higher-level representatives from the Russian and Ukrainian delegations for talks. https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-zelensky-meet-zelensky-said-thank-you-eight-times-in-oval-office-remarks-1755575931099/embed 2. Europeans push back as Trump backs away from ceasefireTrump suggested that a ceasefire might not be needed before starting peace talks to end the war.In the past, Ukraine has been clear that stopping the fighting is a must before any further talks with Russia, and before working on a long-term settlement. A ceasefire is usually easier to agree on than a full peace deal, which could take many months of negotiations, while Russia’s attacks would likely continue. “I don’t know that it’s necessary,” Trump said about a ceasefire. But European leaders pushed back, with the strongest response coming from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. (This means that while Trump was downplaying the need for a ceasefire, European leaders — especially Merz — strongly disagreed, insisting that stopping the fighting first is essential before any real peace talks can begin.) “I can’t imagine that the next meeting would happen without a ceasefire,” Merz said. “So, let’s work on that and let’s try to put pressure on Russia.” When asked to speak, Zelensky did not repeat his earlier calls for a ceasefire. 3. Trump engaged in some shuttle diplomacy with PutinPresident Joseph R. Biden Jr. (the former US president before Trump’s return to office) once called Putin a “murderous dictator,” but Trump has always shown a more positive view of the Russian president. On Monday, Trump continued to present Putin as being serious about ending the war he had started. At one point, Trump even paused his meeting with the European leaders in the East Room of the White House to call the Russian leader. Afterward, Trump brought Zelensky and the European leaders into the Oval Office to explain his discussion with Putin, according to President Alexander Stubb of Finland, as reported by New York Times.

4. Trump hints at security guaranteesTrump told Zelensky that the US would help guarantee Ukraine’s security in any deal to end the war, though he did not say exactly how. The US president did not promise troops on the ground, but when reporters asked if the guarantees could include American military in Ukraine, Trump did not rule it out. He said Europe was the “first line of defence”, but added that “we’ll be involved.” (This means Trump believes Europe should take the lead in defending Ukraine, but the US will also play a role and not stay out completely.) “We’ll give them good protection,” the president said. This was the strongest statement yet from Trump on security guarantees, which are seen as crucial for any deal with Russia. He also said that during last week’s Alaska summit, Putin had agreed that there would be security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any peace deal. At a news conference after Monday’s meetings, Zelensky said that part of the security guarantee would include a $90 billion (₹7.83 lakh crore / £67 billion) arms deal between the US and Ukraine. He said this would include US weapons that Ukraine does not yet have, such as aviation systems, anti-missile systems, “and other things I will not disclose.” Zelensky also said the US would buy Ukrainian drones, which would help fund local production of these unmanned aircraft. The Ukrainian president told reporters that security guarantees for Kyiv would likely be finalised within 10 days. 5. Zelensky launches charm offensiveAfter his tense visit to the Oval Office in February, the Ukrainian president made a big effort to impress his American hosts — even saying “thank you” six times in the first few minutes, according to BBC. During his last visit to the White House, Zelensky was scolded by Vice-President JD Vance for not showing enough gratitude for US support. This time, Zelensky wore a dark suit instead of his usual military uniform, which previously drew a joke from Trump that his guest was “all dressed up today.” Zelensky also tried to build personal ties during the meeting by giving Trump a letter from Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska to be passed on to US First Lady Melania Trump. “It’s not to you — [it’s] to your wife,” Zelensky told Trump. European leaders also increased their praise for Trump before their joint meeting, crediting him for bringing them together at the table. “I really want to thank you for your leadership,” said Nato chief Mark Rutte. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni said that earlier there was no sign Russia wanted peace, but now “something had changed” because of Trump. Despite the positive words, the Europeans also warned that they feel vulnerable to any future Russian aggression. French President Emmanuel Macron told the leaders: “When we talk about security guarantees, we are also talking about the security of the European continent.”

Trump hosted European leaders after meeting Putin in Alaska. He proposed a Putin-Zelensky meeting and hinted at US security guarantees for Ukraine. Europeans insisted on a ceasefire first. Zelensky launched a charm offensive, while Trump engaged in direct talks with Putin.

3. Trump engaged in some shuttle diplomacy with Putin President Joseph R.

Trump-Zelensky Talks: Ukrainian Leader Repeatedly Expresses Thanks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (Aug 18) said he would be open to holding elections once the war with Russia ends and conditions allow for a fair vote. Speaking during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, Zelensky explained that elections during wartime are impossible under martial law. "We need to work in parliament because during the war you can't have elections," he said, stressing the need for people to have a democratic, open, and legal election once peace returns. For now, elections remain frozen. The question is: if they were held, could Zelensky win?
Can Zelensky win if elections were held in Ukraine today?
In February of this year (2025) Trump infamously gave Zelensky a harsh public dressing-down in February, which as per a March poll may actually have boosted the Ukrainian president at home. The Ipsos poll of 1,000 Ukrainians, conducted for The Economist, shows his approval rating at over 70 per cent - a number Trump would kill for. According to the latest Ipsos/Reuters poll, his approval ratings stand at 40 per cent, almost half of Zelensky's.The ratings came at a time when, for weeks, Trump's allies such as Vice President J.D. Vance, Donald Trump Jr. and Elon Musk accused him of acting like a dictator by suspending elections. Trump himself had dismissed him as a "comedian" with "very low ratings."But the poll shows otherwise. Roughly 72 per cent of Ukrainians approve of his leadership, compared to Trump’s 40 per cent at home. Eight in ten still saw him as Ukraine's legitimate president, and a large majority opposed holding elections while the fighting continues. Roughly the same number - seven in ten - still trusted him to lead negotiations. And if a vote were held now, Zelensky would win handily, with former top general Valery Zaluzhny trailing far behind, suggested the poll. The survey was taken just after Washington temporarily pulled both military aid and intelligence support in response to Trump's row with Zelensky—steps that have since been reversed. Despite the setback, Ukrainians remained defiant. At the time, around 74 per cent said that they want to keep fighting even without US help. Most (59 per cent) believed Ukraine can still win on the battlefield.
