<h2>Trump-Putin Alaska meet</h2>It was confirmed on Friday (Aug 8) that Trump will meet with Putin on August 15 to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The US had proposed a tri-party meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelensky, but Putin expressed his reservations about the same. Trump has said that he would know within two minutes of the meeting with Putin if he is interested in ending the Russia-Ukraine war. The White House also said that meeting with Putin will be a ‘listening exercise’ for the US president. Moreover, a day ahead of the scheduled meeting in Alaska, Trump said that there is a 25 per cent chance that this meeting will not be a successful meeting, while emphasising that both leaders would have to meet a second time for a deal to be done. Notably, this will be the first in-person summit between Trump and Putin after their last meeting at the Helsinki Summit in 2018 in Finland. They met briefly at the 2019 G20 Summit in Osaka, but no formal summit was held.

'Europe is tired of the war’: Trump to call Zelensky and Europe ahead of Putin meeting

Amid reports that the Russia-Ukraine peace deal might include some swapping of territory, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky clarified that he won't adhere to any terms on land swap. He emphasised that any peace decisions made without Ukraine's involvement are invalid and will not lead to real peace. He firmly rejected any concessions to Russia, stating that Ukraine will not give up its territory and that the country's borders are defined by its Constitution. Zelensky called for a dignified, lasting peace based on respect and cooperation with international partners, including with US President Donald Trump, but stressed that peace must not be dictated by Moscow.&nbsp;In a post on X, Zelensky said that Ukrainians will not give away their land to the occupier. Russia started it and is dragging it out, ignoring all deadlines, and that is the problem, not something else. <h2>Trump-Putin meeting</h2>It was confirmed on Friday (Aug 8) that Trump will meet with Putin on August 15 to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin confirmed the summit in an online statement. The two leaders will "focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis," Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said. Trump said that the highly anticipated meeting would take place in Alaska. He also suggested that the deal would include some exchange of land. Earlier, the US had proposed that there should be a tri-party meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelensky. Russian President Putin said he is ready to meet Trump, but expressed his reservations about meeting Zelensky at this stage. Russia also proposed the UAE as the location for the meeting.

<h2>Witkoff meets Putin</h2>The breakthrough came after Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Putin on Wednesday (August 6). Kremlin said that Putin held "constructive" talks with Witkoff in Moscow over the Ukraine conflict for over three-hours. In a social media post, Trump said Witkoff held a “highly productive” meeting with Putin and that “great progress was made!” Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a TV interview that the US now has a better understanding of what conditions would be required for Russia to end the war. “For the first time perhaps since this administration began, we have some concrete examples of the kinds of things that Russia would ask for in order to end the war,” Rubio said in an interview with Fox Business Network’s “Kudlow,” adding that questions of territory would be a key part of any deal.&nbsp;

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday (July 31) came down heavily on former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, warning him to ‘watch his words' because he is entering a dangerous territory. Trump's sudden outburst on Medvedev came as he criticised India and Russia as ‘dead economies’ and reiterated that New Delhi charges very high tariffs. He also seemed miffed by India's stance to buy Russian oil and weapons, and even announced additional ‘penalty’ on the country. The scale and complexity of Russian missiles have increased exponentially as the war has moved ahead.&nbsp;<h2>Weapon systems in use</h2>The bulk of the drones were Iranian-designed Shahed drones, also known as Geran, which have become one of the most-used low-cost tools in the Russian arsenal. Russian production of drones has also skyrocketed, with one report suggesting that school children are being invited to the Alabuga factory, in Russia's Tatarstan region, to learn the manufacturing of drones. In April, Putin said that more than 1.5 million drones would be produced in 2024.&nbsp;Apart from drones, there are cruise, ballistic and aerial-launched missiles in use. These are Kh-101 and Kh-555 Cruise missiles, &nbsp;Kalibr Cruise Missiles, Iskander-M Ballistic Missiles and &nbsp;Kinzhal Hypersonic Missiles. Ukrainian officials confirmed that the Kh-101, Kalibr, and Iskander were the most used missiles. The targets were mostly the bomb shelters and subway stations. According to Ukrainian officials, night was the most preferred time for bombing.

"Right now, Ukraine sees around 300 to 400 drones attacking civilian targets every day -- these types of numbers were unheard of in 2023 or 2024," said Yuriy Boyechko, the founder and CEO of the Hope for Ukraine charity, as quoted by ABC News.

India’s ongoing purchase of discounted Russian oil is causing growing tension in its relationship with the United States, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking to Fox Radio on Thursday, Rubio said India’s actions were “most certainly a point of irritation” for Washington. “Look, global trade – India is an ally. It’s a strategic partner. He described BRICS as “hostile to the US”. If imposed, the 25% tariff would single out India more harshly than other major US trading partners. It also risks undoing months of trade discussions and could strain the strategic partnership between Washington and New Delhi, a relationship often seen as critical to countering China’s growing influence.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth allowed a pause in American weapons shipments to Ukraine last week, without informing the White House, CNN reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the situation. The surprise move sparked internal confusion and urgent efforts within the Trump administration to manage backlash from both Congress and Ukrainian officials.President Donald Trump made it clear on Tuesday that he had not ordered the halt. The weapons had been allocated by the previous administration and were already en route when the pause took effect.Trump reiterated his stance during Tuesday’s White House remarks, “The Ukrainians… they were very brave, because somebody had to operate that stuff.” Despite previous warmth towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, sources told CNN that Trump has recently become more sceptical. He is reportedly less inclined to halt Ukraine aid and give Russia any advantage, especially as Putin appears unwilling to engage in peace negotiations. “We get a lot of bulls**t thrown at us by Putin,” Trump said. “It’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”<h2>Who actually made the call to pause shipments?</h2>The pause appears to have been influenced by Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby. Known for his scepticism of Ukraine aid, Colby advised a temporary stop, citing concerns about US stockpile depletion. Colby passed his recommendation to Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg, who agreed. Hegseth then signed off, reportedly believing it matched Trump’s “America First” approach, even though the president had not ordered it.

This is reportedly the second time this year that Hegseth has unilaterally decided to stop military aid to Ukraine, both times leaving senior officials out of the loop. A similar decision in February was reversed quickly, just like this latest one.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth allowed a pause in American weapons shipments to Ukraine last week, without informing the White House, CNN reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the situation. The surprise move sparked internal confusion and urgent efforts within the Trump administration to manage backlash from both Congress and Ukrainian officials. President Donald Trump made it clear on Tuesday that he had not ordered the halt. Asked directly during a Cabinet meeting if he approved the pause, Trump replied, “I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?” Also read: 'I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?': Trump roasts reporter over Ukraine weapons pause – Did Hegseth or someone else make the call? India’s lucrative petroleum exports may be the next flashpoint in geopolitical tensions, as the European Union prepares to ban imports of fuels refined from Russian crude, including those processed outside Russia.&nbsp;&nbsp;The move could hit a major chunk of India’s outbound shipments, worth over $63 billion in FY25, according to official customs data reviewed by Reuters.&nbsp;The proposed curbs, part of the EU’s 18th Russia sanctions package, come at a time when oil prices are already surging due to the Israel–Iran conflict, adding further volatility to global trade.<h2>EU targets refined fuels, India caught in the crossfire</h2>According to Indian Customs data cited by Reuters, petroleum products made up 14 per cent of India’s total exports in FY25, driven largely by refiners like Reliance Industries and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy. India’s total fuel exports stood at $84.1 billion in FY24, with Europe emerging as one of the largest buyers.&nbsp;The EU measure, expected to be discussed later this month, would bar imports of diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline derived from Russian crude, regardless of the refining location. The proposal has raised alarm bells in New Delhi because it does not require cooperation from the US or G7, and is being independently driven by Brussels, as reported by Reuters.<h2>Trump’s disengagement from sanctions gives the EU more space</h2>Unlike during the Biden presidency, the current US administration under President Donald Trump has shown limited enthusiasm for expanding Russian sanctions, especially those that could affect energy markets. According to Reuters, Brussels has struggled to get Washington on board with recent rounds of punitive measures.&nbsp;This divergence has led the EU to act unilaterally, creating fresh risks for India, which has continued to import discounted Russian oil while keeping trade ties with the West intact.<h2>Conflict in West Asia complicates timing</h2>The move comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf. The Israel–Iran conflict, now entering its second week, has pushed Brent crude above $86 per barrel, with fears of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by Bloomberg.&nbsp;India, which imports over 85 per cent of its crude, faces rising freight costs and oil-linked inflation. New sanctions, if passed, could choke off key markets for Indian refiners and raise input costs simultaneously.<h2>Strategic dilemma for India’s oil diplomacy</h2>New Delhi has walked a fine line so far, which is buying Russian crude at a discount while publicly rejecting unilateral sanctions. But experts say the EU’s move could force Indian refiners to pivot, possibly rerouting cargoes to other destinations or facing compliance hurdles.&nbsp;An energy trade expert told Reuters, “Even if the fuel isn’t labelled Russian, the EU could trace its origin through cargo documentation and refinery disclosures.”&nbsp;This would not only complicate exports but also raise transparency and compliance costs for private players.<h2>India’s export outlook at risk</h2>India’s fuel exports have been a lifeline for its trade balance, especially amid tepid global demand for other goods. Losing access to European markets, analysts warn, could shave billions off its annual earnings.&nbsp;With fuel exports contributing $63 billion in FY25 so far, as per Indian Customs and shipping data sourced by Reuters, the stakes couldn’t be higher.As geopolitical tensions mount, India must navigate the fine print of sanctions diplomacy&nbsp;and decide whether to push back, comply quietly, or look east.<h2>What’s next?</h2>The European Commission is expected to finalise the 18th Russia sanctions package later this month, with a formal vote scheduled before the summer recess, according to EU diplomatic sources quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;If adopted, the ban would be the first of its kind to target refined products derived from Russian crude, a shift from previous sanctions that focused on crude oil directly exported from Russia.&nbsp;(With inputs from the agencies)&nbsp;

With Europe being a major buyer of Indian fuel,14% of total exports, this ban could severely affect India trade balance.

The move could hit a major chunk of India’s outbound shipments, worth over $63 billion in FY25, according to official customs data reviewed by Reuters. The proposed curbs, part of the EU’s 18th Russia sanctions package, come at a time when oil prices are already surging due to the Israel–Iran conflict, adding further volatility to global trade. EU targets refined fuels, India caught in the crossfire According to Indian Customs data cited by Reuters, petroleum products made up 14 per cent of India’s total exports in FY25, driven largely by refiners like Reliance Industries and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy. India’s total fuel exports stood at $84.1 billion in FY24, with Europe emerging as one of the largest buyers. The EU measure, expected to be discussed later this month, would bar imports of diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline derived from Russian crude, regardless of the refining location. The proposal has raised alarm bells in New Delhi because it does not require cooperation from the US or G7, and is being independently driven by Brussels, as reported by Reuters. Trump’s disengagement from sanctions gives the EU more space Unlike during the Biden presidency, the current US administration under President Donald Trump has shown limited enthusiasm for expanding Russian sanctions, especially those that could affect energy markets. According to Reuters, Brussels has struggled to get Washington on board with recent rounds of punitive measures. This divergence has led the EU to act unilaterally, creating fresh risks for India, which has continued to import discounted Russian oil while keeping trade ties with the West intact. Conflict in West Asia complicates timing The move comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf. The Israel–Iran conflict, now entering its second week, has pushed Brent crude above $86 per barrel, with fears of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by Bloomberg. India, which imports over 85 per cent of its crude, faces rising freight costs and oil-linked inflation. New sanctions, if passed, could choke off key markets for Indian refiners and raise input costs simultaneously. Strategic dilemma for India’s oil diplomacy New Delhi has walked a fine line so far, which is buying Russian crude at a discount while publicly rejecting unilateral sanctions. But experts say the EU’s move could force Indian refiners to pivot, possibly rerouting cargoes to other destinations or facing compliance hurdles. An energy trade expert told Reuters, “Even if the fuel isn’t labelled Russian, the EU could trace its origin through cargo documentation and refinery disclosures.” This would not only complicate exports but also raise transparency and compliance costs for private players. India’s export outlook at risk India’s fuel exports have been a lifeline for its trade balance, especially amid tepid global demand for other goods. Losing access to European markets, analysts warn, could shave billions off its annual earnings. With fuel exports contributing $63 billion in FY25 so far, as per Indian Customs and shipping data sourced by Reuters, the stakes couldn’t be higher. As geopolitical tensions mount, India must navigate the fine print of sanctions diplomacy and decide whether to push back, comply quietly, or look east. What’s next? The European Commission is expected to finalise the 18th Russia sanctions package later this month, with a formal vote scheduled before the summer recess, according to EU diplomatic sources quoted by Reuters. If adopted, the ban would be the first of its kind to target refined products derived from Russian crude, a shift from previous sanctions that focused on crude oil directly exported from Russia. India’s petroleum exports, worth over $63 billion for FY25, are threatened by the EU's proposed ban on fuels refined from Russian crude, impacting a significant portion of its outbound shipments.

Ukraine demands Russia’s 'unconditional agreement' to ceasefire ahead of Trump-Putin call today

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer led a virtual summit with Ukraine&rsquo;s allies to discuss security assurances in the event of a peace agreement. The meeting, attended by representatives from 26 nations, included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron, according to Downing Street.
Following the discussions, Zelensky shared his statement on the social media platform X, stressing the urgency of pressuring Russia into peace negotiations.

<h2>Zelensky: &ldquo;Moscow understands one language&rdquo;</h2>
Zelensky said that achieving peace must start "unconditionally" and that if Russia refuses, "strong pressure must be applied until they do. Moscow understands one language."
He also talked about a US-backed ceasefire proposal, introduced on Tuesday, which calls for a 30-day halt to hostilities across air, sea, and land. "This is an American proposal &mdash; a full, unconditional ceasefire for 30 days. In that time, without killings, it would truly be possible to negotiate all aspects of a real peace," he explained.
However, Zelensky accused Russia of obstructing peace efforts, saying, "A ceasefire could have already happened, but Russia is doing everything to prevent it."

He also dismissed claims from Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding, "Putin is lying to everyone about the situation on the ground, especially about what&rsquo;s happening in the Kursk region, where our Ukrainian forces continue their operations."
Zelensky said that Ukraine&rsquo;s forces had "stabilised the situation on the front in Donetsk region &mdash; specifically Pokrovsk," and argued that Putin was deliberately prolonging the conflict.
"Putin is also lying about how a ceasefire is supposedly too complicated. In reality, everything can be controlled, and we have discussed this with the Americans. The truth is, Putin has already dragged out the war for nearly a week after the talks in Jeddah. And he will keep dragging it out," he said.

<h2>Calls for tougher sanctions and stronger defence</h2>
The Ukrainian leader urged European nations to take more decisive action against Russia, calling for sanctions to be reinforced rather than eased. "This includes sanctions against Russia that must not only be maintained but continuously strengthened," he said.
Zelensky also stressed the need for security guarantees to ensure long-term peace. "This is Russia&rsquo;s war &mdash; more than three years of full-scale fighting and destruction. To stop this, active pressure is needed, not just talks. Pressure on Russia. Strong measures are needed to take even the first steps toward ending the war. This includes sanctions against Russia that must not only be maintained but continuously strengthened. I ask you to take these steps and to work with your partners on this," he said.
He suggested that European forces should be deployed on Ukrainian soil, with the United States providing additional support.
He further called for increased investment in defence production, both in Ukraine and across Europe, to speed up the manufacturing of critical military supplies. "It shouldn&rsquo;t take 3 to 5 years to produce ammunition when it&rsquo;s about your defence and security. Please, do it as soon as possible," he urged.

<h2>Ukraine&rsquo;s security tied to Europe&rsquo;s stability</h2>
Zelensky warned against considering Russia&rsquo;s stance when deciding the deployment of security forces, calling it "a very bad signal." He added, "The contingent must be stationed on Ukrainian soil. This is a security guarantee for Ukraine and a security guarantee for Europe."
"If Putin wants to bring some foreign contingent onto Russia&rsquo;s territory, that&rsquo;s his business. But it is not his business to decide anything about Ukraine&rsquo;s and Europe&rsquo;s security," he said.

After arriving in Saudi Arabia, Yermak said that a ceasefire has never seemed closer in the three-year war the Russian Federation has waged on Ukraine.&nbsp;

A stronger, safer and more resilient Europe&mdash;militarily, politically and economically&mdash;is our shared goal. Securing a meaningful ceasefire is the first step. ‘Time to make things right’: Zelensky ready to work under Trump’s ‘strong leadership’ after US halts aid

US has been pressuring Kyiv to grant American firms access to Ukraine&rsquo;s rare earth mineral reserves, even raising the possibility of cutting off Elon Musk&rsquo;s Starlink satellite internet service, news agency Reuters reported.
Starlink, owned by Musk&rsquo;s SpaceX, is a vital communications tool for Ukraine, particularly its military operations.
The sources told Reuters that the issue was first raised after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's initial proposal.

According to a source familiar with the talks, the matter resurfaced during discussions on Thursday (Feb 20) between US special envoy Keith Kellogg and Zelensky. Ukraine was allegedly warned that Starlink access could be cut off if it did not agree to a mineral deal.
"Ukraine runs on Starlink. They consider it their North Star. Losing Starlink ... would be a massive blow," one source said.

<h2>Zelensky rejects US demand for $500 billion in minerals</h2>
The Trump administration reportedly sought $500 billion worth of Ukraine&rsquo;s mineral wealth as repayment for US aid. However, Zelensky refused, citing a lack of security guarantees.
The US proposal would have given Washington and American companies control over 50% of Ukraine&rsquo;s critical minerals, including graphite, uranium, titanium, and lithium, key resources for electric vehicle batteries and defence applications.

<h2>Growing rift between Trump and Zelensky</h2>
The mineral dispute has deepened tensions between Trump and Zelensky. On Wednesday, Trump called the Ukrainian leader &ldquo;a dictator without elections&rdquo; after Zelensky suggested Trump was influenced by Russian disinformation after US President claimed that Ukraine had started the war.
Despite the earlier rejection, the White House announced on Friday (Feb 21) that Ukraine would soon sign an agreement granting the US access to its mineral resources.
&ldquo;Look, here&rsquo;s the bottom line: President Zelensky is going to sign that deal, and you will see that in the very short term. And that is good for Ukraine,&rdquo; Trump&rsquo;s National Security Advisor Michael Waltz told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

'No minerals, no internet': US may cut Ukraine’s access to Musk's Starlink over rare earth deal

Ukraine must be part of any talks about its future, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday, after US and Russian officials held high-level talks in Saudi Arabia that excluded Kyiv.
"It's a fundamental principle for Canada and for the vast majority of our allies... Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine," Trudeau said ahead of a meeting on the conflict and European security hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trudeau also pushed back against comments from President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday echoed many of Russia's talking points on the three-year war in Ukraine, blaming Kyiv for having "started" the fighting.
"We had rules around borders, around not invading your neighbors that Russia chose deliberately to violate a number of years ago," Trudeau said.
