Trump signs Greenland security deal with Denmark, paving way for two new US military bases

US President Donald Trump has announced what he calls an “Infinite Life” agreement with Denmark and Greenland, claiming it gives the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security. But Denmark’s own description of the planned pact focuses on strengthened security cooperation while explicitly reaffirming the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.Trump made the announcement on Friday (Sep 18) on Truth Social, saying the agreement would allow the US to take whatever measures it considers necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the United States.“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump said.

He also said the agreement would prevent any US adversary from establishing a military base, maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington’s written approval. Trump described it as an “Infinite Life” agreement with no expiry and said the US would immediately begin work on expanding its military presence on the island.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-demands-greenland-again-why-the-frozen-island-considered-strategically-important-for-global-security-wion-decodes-1783587380770">Trump demands Greenland again. More than 500 people gathered in Nuuk this week to protest against US President Donald Trump’s repeated remarks on his desire to control Greenland. The demonstration took place shortly after the inauguration of the new premises of the US consulate in the Arctic island’s capital.Protesters carried banners reading “Go Home USA,” “Make America Go Away!” and “We are not for sale,” while many waved Greenland’s red-and-white national flag. Some demonstrators also held signs stating “Asu USA,” with “Asu” meaning “Stop” in Greenlandic. The crowd also turned their backs on the US consulate building and observed two minutes of silence to express opposition to Washington’s growing interest in the strategically important island.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs greater control over Greenland due to national security concerns, warning that the Danish autonomous territory could otherwise fall under the influence of China or Russia. His comments have sparked concern and frustration among many Greenlanders, who insist the island’s future should remain in their own hands.“Greenland belongs to us. It’s our country. It doesn’t belong to Denmark or the United States. We are a people and we live here,” 68-year-old protester Grethe Kramer Berthelsen told AFP.The new US consulate building was inaugurated earlier in the day in the presence of US Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery. Greenlandic broadcaster KNR reported that Howery assured attendees that Trump had ruled out the use of force and that Greenlanders themselves would decide the island’s future.Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen declined to attend the inauguration. Earlier in the week, he met with Trump’s special envoy Jeff Landry, who called for a stronger American presence in Greenland during his visit.“It’s time for the US to put its footprint back on Greenland,” he said as he wound up his four-day visit.

Trump's Greenland U-turn explained: NATO, 'forever' framework, minerals, Golden Dome and more | In Pics

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jan 21) shifted course on Greenland. The POTUS, who had been pushing a hardline approach to acquire Greenland, used the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos to hint at a softer approach on Greenland. He said that the tariffs he had threatened to slap on European countries are now off the table, and so is the talk of force. In its place, Trump is offering a deal. Here's what we know about Trump's Greenland framework deal.<h2>Framework deal for Greenland</h2>After meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the US president said the two had drawn up what he called a "framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region"."This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO Nations," Trump wrote on Truth Social. On the back of that understanding, he said, the tariffs planned for February 1 would not go ahead. "Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress," he said.

Vice President J D Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff, he added, would now take the talks forward.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/sometimes-people-need-a-dictator-trump-stuns-davos-after-greenland-rant-1769047692322">Sometimes people 'need a dictator’: Trump stuns Davos after Greenland rant</a><h2>A complex deal is in works</h2>While Trump did not spell out much in his initial post, later, in an interview with CNBC, he gave a clearer picture of what he calls his "concept of a deal" with NATO."We have a concept of a deal. I think it’s going to be a very good deal for the United States, also for them," said Trump. The POTUS noted that the deal was "a little bit complex," but said that they will "explain it down the line."<h2>Trump wants Greenland's minerals?</h2>At the core of Trump's framework for Greenland is access to the island's mineral wealth. The island sits on large reserves of rare earth elements, materials that are critical for everything from smartphones to missile systems. Trump said the US and its European allies would gain rights to those resources under the arrangement.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/davos-2026-key-takeaways-from-donald-trump-s-angry-greenland-obsessed-speech-nato-and-ungrateful-europe-1769040847782">Davos 2026: Key takeaways from Trump's angry, Greenland obsessed speech</a>He also talked of the Golden Dome, a project launched by his executive order in 2025. It is Trump's vision of a missile shield for America, built using satellites and space-based interceptors. He suggested that parties to the framework would also be "involved in the Golden Dome" system, though he did not say if he just meant Greenland or NATO, and neither did he say exactly how."They’re going to be involved in the Golden Dome, and they’re going to be involved in mineral rights, and so are we,” Trump said.<h2>How long will the US-Greenland deal last?</h2>When asked how long this new arrangement would last, Trump did not hesitate. "Forever," he said.<h2>US to control Greenland?</h2>Reports suggest that there's a clause that would grant the US sovereignty to some parts of the frozen island. The New York Times, citing senior officials familiar with the talks, reported that the framework being discussed could include a clause giving the United States sovereignty over parts of certain pockets of Greenland, and not the whole island.White House Spokesperson Anna Kelly when asked about this, said, details would come "as discussions continue."<h2>Copenhagen exhales, welcomes de-escalation</h2>In Denmark, the reaction was cautious but relieved after weeks of tensions. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on X said that the day was "ending on a better note than it began." He welcomed Trump’s decision to rule out using force and to pause the "trade war".

In major escalation, European Union stalls US trade deal after Trump threatens tariffs over Greenland

In 1979, Greenland was a quiet buffer, but in 2026, President Trump’s demand to purchase the island has sparked a global crisis. Citing missile defence and rare earth needs, the US now uses tariffs to pressure Europe, turning the Arctic into a high-stakes security battleground.

Why Greenland was a ‘Silent Ally’ in 1979 but is a ‘National Security Crisis’ for the US in 2026

If no deal is struck between US President Donald Trump and the governments of Denmark and its semi-autonomous region Greenland, a limited armed confrontation is likely to follow. Both sides have ramped up their troop deployment or readiness. For a peaceful region, the current levels of committed troops or planned deployments are unusual. NORAD is sending troops, Danish military has send reinformcements, and NATO is getting involved more. An all-out war is highly unlikely if a stopgap arrangement is reached at Davos or afterwards on Trump's desire to control Greenland. But at the time of writing, practically all sides appear to be preparing for war while denying that anything is out of the ordinary. Here is a roundup.<h2>For Minnesota or Arctic? Pentagon spokespeople insisted there is no connection between the standby order and any overseas military operation, but it could also be a pressure tactic by the US on Greenland.Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-stop-using-so-called-threat-russia-china-lash-out-at-trump-over-greenland-text-to-norway-pm-1768883597880">'Stop using so-called threat...’: Russia, China lash out at Trump over 'Greenland' text to Norway PM</a><h2>Danish authorities increase military presence and readiness</h2>Denmark has dispatched more than 100 combat soldiers to Greenland, with the chief of the Royal Danish Army, Peter Boysen, leading a "substantial contribution" of troops landing in Kangerlussuaq. The Insurrection Act of 1807 could be invoked if state authorities are deemed unable to restore order. Pentagon spokespeople insisted there is no connection between the standby order and any overseas military operation, but it could also be a pressure tactic by the US on Greenland. The US president said that he is no longer obliged to only think of peace, suggesting a possible annexation of the Arctic territory, and also questioned Denmark’s ‘right of ownership’ of the island.Earlier on Monday (Jan 19), Trump claimed that NATO had warned Denmark about “Russian threat” for 20 years, but Copenhagen “has been unable to do anything about it.”Last week, Trump announced imposing a 10 per cent tariff on Greenland’s allies, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. He also warned that the tariffs, which will be levied from February 1, will be increased to 25 per cent on June 1.&nbsp;

Suez Canal to Greenland: Moments when US-Europe ties were pushed to the brink

During an NBA game organised in London on Sunday (Jan 18), the national anthem of the United States was met with boos and heckles. Among the crowd at the stadium, a person shouted a phrase that seemed like a message for the US President Donald Trump - "Leave Greenland alone." This happened when the actress, Vanessa Williams, started singing the anthem on the stage. In a video posted on the social media platform X, Williams was heard performing the US national anthem when a person from the audience exclaims, “Leave Greenland alone." In response, the crowd sent a loud cheer.

Now it is time, and it will be done!!! President Donald J. We’re not going to let that happen.” Trump said this in support of his claim that America needs to acquire Greenland as the region poses a national security threat to the US due to pressure from Russia and China.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Major General Søren Andersen, the commander of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Greenland, has countered this narrative. He said, “No. We don’t see a threat from China or Russia today. But we look into a potential threat, and that is what we are training for.”

Earlier on Saturday (Jan 17), tension between the Trump administration and NATO allies flared after Trump announced imposing a 10 per cent tariff on Greenland’s allies, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. Trump also warned that the tariffs, which will be levied from February 1, will be increased to 25 per cent on June 1.“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social. “These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable. Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect Global Peace and Security, strong measures be taken so that this potentially perilous situation ends quickly, and without question.”While Denmark called the move a “surprise”, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Trump’s imposition of tariffs over Greenland was “completely wrong”. The last days have been tough. Our preparations and the increasing pressure, that has been intense.”She further stressed that the government of Greenland was “strong” and vowed to work “to ensure the Greenlandic people in our country can feel safe and live securely.” She added, “We are using all our strength to achieve this as we continue the work.”

We are doing our utmost. But the last days, naturally...” Motzfeldt then briefly broke down during the interview as she held back tears and said, “Oh, I am getting very emotional. I am overwhelmed. The last days have been tough. Our preparations and the increasing pressure, that has been intense.” She further stressed that the government of Greenland was “strong” and vowed to work “to ensure the Greenlandic people in our country can feel safe and live securely.” She added, “We are using all our strength to achieve this as we continue the work.”

On Thursday (Jan 15), White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told a briefing that the employment of European troops in Greenland has no impact on Trump’s plans to take over Greenland.

Amid US President Donald Trump's push for Greenland takeover, several senators in the United States (US) have introduced a bill aimed at preventing his plans. &nbsp;Authored by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Lisa Murkowski, the bipartisan NATO Unity Protection Act seeks to bar the Department of Defense and Department of State from using funds to “blockade, occupy, annex or otherwise assert control” over the territory of any other NATO member state.&nbsp;&nbsp;In a statement, Shaheen, who represents the state of New Hampshire, said, “This bipartisan legislation makes clear that US taxpayer dollars cannot be used for actions that would fracture NATO and violate our own commitments to NATO. This bill sends a clear message that recent rhetoric around Greenland deeply undermines America’s own national security interests and faces bipartisan opposition in Congress.”

Murkowski, a rare Republican critic of Trump who represents Alaska, said the 32-member NATO security alliance was the “strongest line of defence” for global security. "The mere notion that America would use our vast resources against our allies is deeply troubling and must be wholly rejected by Congress in statute,” Murkowski added.&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/trump-walking-towards-greenland-white-house-tap-to-monitor-post-sparks-speculations-about-us-strike-1768274674811/1768274674812">Trump walking towards Greenland? White House 'tap to monitor' post sparks speculations about US strike</a><h2>Trump's Greenland controversy</h2>It all started soon after US strike on Caracas and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Trump claimed that making the Danish territory part of the United States would serve US national security interests, given its strategic location on the Arctic. Trump argued that US ownership is a necessity to prevent Russia or China from occupying the territory. He claimed that the area is already "covered with Russian and Chinese ships" and mocked Greenland’s own defenses as consisting of just “two dog sleds.” Despite opposition from his NATO allies, Trump has continued with his rhetoric, saying, "I'm a fan of Denmark, too, I have to tell you. And you know, they've been very nice to me…But you know, the fact that they had a boat land there 500 years ago doesn't mean that they own the land." He also declared that United States will make a deal with Greenland either the “hard way or the easy way.”&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-we-choose-denmark-greenland-rejects-trump-s-takeover-push-us-president-warns-big-problem-for-him-1768369136270">'We choose Denmark’: Greenland rejects Trump’s takeover push, US president warns 'big problem for him'</a>&nbsp;On Tuesday (Jan 13), Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that if his country has to choose, it would prefer staying with Denmark. His rejection came as a direct answer to US President Donald Trump’s push to take control of the Arctic territory. He also said that US should understand this very clearly that ‘Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States.’
