Streaming service Quibi said on Wednesday it intends to wind down its operations and start a process to sell its assets, just six months after its launch.

The announcement highlights the dominance that Netflix, Amazon`s Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+ hold over smaller streaming service providers, which struggle to keep up against their large content budgets and vast libraries of shows.

"The world has changed dramatically since Quibi launched and our standalone business model is no longer viable," founder Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement.

Los Angeles-based Quibi offers entertainment and news in episodes of 10 minutes or less on mobile phones, initially promoted for on-the-go viewing. The service was priced at $5 a month with advertisements, or $8 a month without them.

"Our failure was not for lack of trying; we`ve considered and exhausted every option available to us," Chief Executive Meg Whitman and Katzenberg said in a letter to employees. They said the failure could be either because the idea itself wasn`t strong enough to justify a standalone streaming service or because of its timing.

Quibi, which is backed by $1.8 billion from Hollywood studios and other investors, was launched on April 6 when audiences were sheltering at home to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Popular shows on the service included 'Most Dangerous Game' starring Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz and 'Chrissy's Court' and news and talk shows like 'Around the World by BBC News' and 'The Report by NBC News'

Besides ad sales, Quibi has generated $3.3 million in subscription revenue since its launch, with revenue trending downward since July, according to analytics firm Apptopia.

Network is precious, network is everything. All of us yearn for that extra bar on our phones when we are watching movies or doing anything that is data-heavy. The buffering circle is the most annoying thing when all we want to do is unwind. We run around our homes for that perfect sweet spot of abundant network.

But what if we told you, you'll get 4G network on Moon too?

Yes, NASA seems to be doing such a thing. It has awarded USD 14.1 million to Nokia to deploy 4G cellular network on Moon.

Think about it, if you go to the Moon and in case you lose network, you can call it 'out of the world problem' instead of first/second world one. This seemingly sad tip may bring in a lot of social media cred!

But right now the set up of 4G cellular network on the Moon appears to be for scientific and research purposes.

"The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds and provide more reliability than current standards," NASA noted in its contract award announcement.

The grant given to Nokia is part of USD 370 million worth of contracts signed under NASA`s "Tipping Point" selections, meant to advance research and development for space exploration.

According to United Press International, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a live broadcast said that the space agency must quickly develop new technologies for living and working on the moon if it wants to realise its goal to have astronauts working at a lunar base by 2028.

"We need power systems that can last a long time on the surface of the moon, and we need habitation capability on the surface," Bridenstine said.

Nokia`s research arm, Bell Labs, provided more details in a Twitter thread. The company intends for the network to support wireless operation of lunar rovers and navigation, as well as streaming video.

"Working with our partners at @Int_Machines, this groundbreaking network will be the critical communications fabric for data transmission applications, including the control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation over lunar geography and streaming of high definition video," Bell Labs said in a tweet.

This is not Nokia`s first attempt to launch an LTE network on the moon. It was planned to do this in 2018 in collaboration with PTScientists, a German space company, and Vodafone UK to launch an LTE network at the site of the Apollo 17 landing, but the mission never got off the ground.

Akshay Kumar's most awaited movie of the year, 'Laxxmi Bomb' is being riddled with controveries one after another -- for the name of the movie to being accused of promoting love jihad.

Movie theaters outside of New York City will be allowed to reopen on Oct. 23 after a months-long hiatus spurred by the coronavirus, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday.

Theaters will be required to cap capacity at 25% with a maximum of 50 people per screen, and only in counties that have a positivity rate below 2% on the 14-day-average and no cluster areas, Cuomo said.
Moviegoers will be required to wear masks except when seated and eating or drinking. Theaters will be required to meet enhanced standards for air filtration and ventilation.
The governor announced the move at a Saturday briefing where he said New York was making progress in tackling COVID-19 "clusters" in certain areas of the state, including Brooklyn and Queens in New York City.

"The strategy is working," Cuomo said, pointing to decreasing positivity rates in so-called "red zones." "Not just the micro clusters, the whole statewide strategy is working."
Cuomo has come under pressure from cinema operators for not allowing theaters to reopen sooner.
Producers of two African-made films premiering on Netflix this month believe their work will show there's subscriber appetite for movies that go deeper than the Hollywood stereotypes that often make African viewers groan.

Subscribers to the world`s largest streaming service can now watch 'Poacher', a Kenyan drama about elephant poaching and 'Òlòturé', a Nigerian thriller about a journalist whose world falls apart after she goes undercover as a sex worker.
The films avoid the simplistic portrayals that viewers in Africa often resent, the producers say.

Netflix has begun screening more content produced in Africa, and in June released romantic comedy 'Cook Off', Zimbabwe`s first offering on the streaming service.

Poacher, the first Kenyan film released on Netflix, uses drama to show the lives of everyday people involved in poaching.
"It`s very simple to point fingers," said Davina Leonard, who co-wrote, co-produced, and stars in Poacher. "When you start a drama, now you`re looking at the people and their motivations."

The film's other star, Brian Ogola, hopes Poacher will spur people to action. "It`s still not enough if we want our grandchildren to see some of these animals in their natural habitat." The film ends with a statistic from the World Wildlife Foundation: if current trends continue, elephants will be extinct by 2040.

The other movie, Òlòturé, joins a host of Nigerian films on the platform, which has nearly 193 million subscribers globally.
Òlòturé was shot on the gritty streets and in rundown homes of Lagos. It tells the story of impoverished sex workers lured into being trafficked overseas. Human Rights Watch ranks Nigeria a top origin country of trafficking victims in Europe and elsewhere.

In one scene, a businessman drugs and rapes the undercover journalist at a party. In another, sex workers endure a voodoo initiation to scare them into loyalty to pimps trafficking them to Italy.

"I am very happy that this conversation has started so that the government will sit up to their responsibility, so that the agencies that are tasked with fighting human trafficking in Nigeria will maybe clamour for more funding or sit up and do better," said co-producer James Amuta.

Big Hit Entertainment Co Ltd, the management agency of South Korean K-pop group BTS, saw its stock fall as much as 23% on Friday, extending losses from its debut the previous day as pricing eased after pre-listing hype.

The stock had dipped from its debut price ahead of Thursday closing, with analysts saying the lower price should be viewed as more reasonable and based on the fundamentals of a company which relies heavily on that one boy band for revenue.

Analysts said Big Hit`s valuation based on its initial public offering (IPO) price of 135,000 won per share was comparable to peers such as K-Pop agencies SM Entertainment Co Ltd and JYP Entertainment Corp.

They said the price, which fell as low as 199,000 won on Friday, seemed to be returning to Earth after a period of overheated speculation pushed Big Hit`s debut to double the IPO price and then fuelled a further 30% surge shortly after.
The short-lived surge echoed the strong debuts of SK Biopharmaceuticals Co Ltd in July and Kakao Games Corp last month, as South Korean retail investors known as "Ants" capitalise on government economic stimulus which has flooded markets with cash.

However, unlike a pharmaceutical maker with a pipeline of drugs or a mobile game developer benefiting from a stay-at-home trend, K-pop agencies that depend on a few star artists can see more fluctuation in share prices, analysts said.
BTS accounted for 97.4% of Big Hit's revenue in 2019 and 87.7% in the first half of 2020, a regulatory filing showed.
"Big Hit`s reliance on BTS is still absolute when including non-management, indirect sales such as merchandise, intellectual property and content," said Hyundai Motor Securities analyst Kim Hyun-yong. "It must make all-out efforts to create a post-BTS revenue source."

The stage adaptation of Alanis Morissette`s album 'Jagged Little Pill', led nominations for the annual Tony Awards on Thursday although Broadway theatres remain dark in a prolonged pandemic shutdown until summer of 2021.

'Jagged Little Pill', inspired by the Canadian-born singer`s best-selling 1995 album, got 15 nominations including best musical and nods for six of its actors including star Elizabeth Stanley.

The rock musical, whose themes include sexual assault, drug addiction and female empowerment, opened on Broadway in December 2019, but like all live shows in New York City was forced to close in mid-March as the coronavirus pandemic hit the city. The Broadway closure was extended last week to June 2021.

The pandemic also postponed the annual Tony Awards, which usually take place in June. The shortened Broadway season meant a reduced number of Tony nominations on Thursday and a new date for the awards ceremony, which is expected to be mostly virtual, has yet to be announced.
'Moulin Rouge! The Musical', based on the 2001 movie by Baz Luhrmann, got 14 Tony nominations on Thursday, including best musical.
