You're out the whole day, you come home and eat some spicy Chicken curry. Your plate also has a chutney. After dinner, just before bed, you have a glass of milk spiced up with a blend that does NOT make it spicy but a delightful drink. And when you are just about to hit the bed, you read some food critic saying that Indian cuisine is based on 'one spice'. And you lose your sleep laughing incredulously.

Indian food can make encyclopedias sweat if they try to describe each and every dish. And the spices may require volumes with their literally thousands of combinations.

But Gene Weingarten, a food critic did not think so. In his article in Washington Post, Weingarten said that entire Indian cuisine was based on 'one spice'. He said that Indian food was just 'curry'.

This most definitely set social media on fire. Weingarten was accused of being ignorant and even racist. Washington DC-based lawyer Rabia O'chaudry reminded Weingarten that Indians put 8 spices just in the morning Omlette.

Kanye West and Irina Shayk call it quits after few months of dating

Need proof that moviegoing is far from returning to normal? Look no further than this weekend`s domestic box office charts.

Case in point: An animated movie based on the kid's TV show 'PAW Patrol' left Hugh Jackman`s romance-drama 'Reminiscence' in the dust in North America, with the heroic pups of Adventure City collecting six times more than a film toplined by one of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood in their respective debuts. That`s the unpredictable reality of the movie theatre business as the delta variant continues to depress ticket sales across the globe.

Neither 'PAW Patrol' nor 'Reminiscence' were able to best 'Free Guy,' which remained victorious for the second weekend straight. After debuting last weekend to a leading $28.4 million, the Disney and 20th Century`s sci-fi action comedy declined a mere 34% in its second weekend. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds, added another $18.8 million between Friday and Sunday, marking an impressive hold with or without a pandemic.
Many summer offerings, including Paramount`s 'PAW Patrol' and Warner Bros.

'Reminiscence,' was made available on streaming platforms on the same day as their theatrical debuts. 'PAW Patrol' landed simultaneously on Paramount Plus, while 'Reminiscence' premiered concurrently on HBO Max. Alternatively 'Free Guy,' which had the best second-weekend hold of any nationwide release this summer, is available exclusively in theatres.

In a closer-than-expected second place, 'PAW Patrol' earned $13 million from 3,184 North American theatres. That`s not a bad result for a kids movie, especially considering children under the age of 12 are currently unable to get vaccinated, making it less appealing for parents to take the whole family to the movies. Among opening weekend ticket buyers, 41% were parents and 47% were kids.

'PAW Patrol,' centring on a young boy named Ryder and a heroic group of pups who save Adventure City from the evil Mayor Humdinger, was surprisingly well received by youngsters, parents and, yes, even critics. Variety`s Courtney Howard called the film a "gripping, inspiring animated thriller."

"This is a good opening for a TV-based family animation release," says David A. Gross, who runs consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "These movies are not in the league with the Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Illumination juggernauts, but they cost less, make money and occasionally break out ? la 'Alvin and the Chipmunks,' 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman,' and 'Scooby-Doo.'"

Meanwhile, the Jackman-led 'Reminiscence' was barely able to crack the top 10 in its opening weekend. The film, playing in 3,265 North American locations, managed to scrape together $2 million, which is a terrible result given its $68 million production budget. However, the movie's underperformance isn't exactly surprising.

'Reminiscence,' which garnered mixed reviews, targets older audiences, a demographic that`s been more reluctant to return to movie theatres.

Variety`s Courtney Howard called the film a "gripping, inspiring animated thriller." "This is a good opening for a TV-based family animation release," says David A. Peabody & Sherman,' and 'Scooby-Doo.'" Meanwhile, the Jackman-led 'Reminiscence' was barely able to crack the top 10 in its opening weekend.

Box Office: 'PAW Patrol' crushes Hugh Jackman's 'Reminiscence' as 'Free Guy' remains No. 1

Don Everly, whose close-harmony singing with his brother, Phil, generated dreamy, chart-topping hits about teen romance in the late 1950s and early `60s and influenced groups from The Beatles to Simon and Garfunkel, has died, the Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday. He was 84.

Everly, whose hits with his brother included 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Bye Bye Love,' died on Saturday at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, a family spokesperson told the newspaper. His brother died in 2014 at age 74.

The New York Times once described the brothers` voices as "dipped in country sugar," and it was said that "if they sing country in heaven, then there`s a good chance the angels sound like the Everly Brothers."

"Perhaps even more powerfully than Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers melded country with the emerging sound of Fifties rock & roll," said Rolling Stone magazine in putting the brothers at No. 33 on its list of the '100 Greatest Artists.'

The Everlys` success faded in the 1960s amid the advent of guitar-driven rock, the tension between the brothers and drug problems. They split up for 10 years but their harmonies proved timeless.

Isaac Donald 'Don' Everly was born on Feb. 1, 1937, in Brownie, Kentucky, the son of two country musicians, Ike and Margaret Everly. Phil was born two years later and they were still boys when their musical careers began.

With Ike Everly on guitar, the family was a travelling act and had its own radio show, on which Don and his younger brother would sing between commercials for XIP rat poison and Foster`s 30-minute Wonder Corn and Callus Remover.

In the mid-'50s the brothers set out on their own and their breakthrough hit, 'Bye Bye Love,' came in 1957, rising to No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard pop charts. It was the first of many Everly tunes written by Boudleaux Bryant and his wife, Felice, including 'All I Have to Do Is Dream,' 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Devoted to You.'

"The new Everlys sound kept the high, keening harmonies, but backed them with robust acoustic guitars and a rock `n` roll beat that owed something to Bo Didley," the Rough Guide to Rock said. "The new sound - precisely arranged, whiny, compelling - was perfect for teenagers` portable radios."

'Wake Up Little Susie,' also released in 1957, was their first No. 1 hit. A song about two teenagers falling asleep at the drive-in theatre and waking up long after curfew, it was banned from Boston radio stations for its sexually suggestive content.

In 2000 then-presidential candidate George W. Bush told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that his favourite song was 'Wake Up Little Susie,' but he got the artist wrong, attributing the song to Buddy Holly, according to Rolling Stone.

`EVERY SYLLABLE CAN SHINE`

In 1960 the brothers signed with a new record label, Warner Bros., agreeing to a 10-year, $1 million contracts and making their debut with their own song, 'Cathy`s Clown.'
As the 1960s advanced, the brothers grew increasingly out of step with the tumultuous era. Their squeaky-clean image and innocent lyrics marked them as dated even as their sound carried on through The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, in particular, who recorded 'Bye Bye Love' on their 1970 hit album, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.'

Art Garfunkel told Rolling Stone that the brothers` harmonizing had taught him that "every syllable can shine."
"They were Kentucky guys with beautiful, perfect-pitch harmonies and great diction," he said. "All those vowels and consonants, those S`s and T`s, every one of them killed me."

Personal problems took their toll as their popularity waned, with both brothers becoming addicted to speed and Don suffering a nervous breakdown and attempting suicide, according to Rolling Stone.

In 1973 the Everlys finally broke up during a concert - Don had taken the stage drunk - at Knott`s Berry Farm theme park in Buena Park, California.
''Phil Everly threw his guitar down and stormed off the stage during a performance of 'Cathy`s Clown,` leaving Don to tell the stunned audience the group was finished," Rolling Stone said.

The brothers reportedly did not speak for almost a decade and pursued solo careers. In September 1983, they reunited at a concert at London`s Royal Albert Hall. Their performance was critically acclaimed and produced an album and a DVD.

"We had been singing together and hadn`t really been apart since we were around 6 years old," Don told the New York Times. "It kept us immature, in a way, kept us from developing any individuality. But we took enough time, and we finally worked things out. Now it`s difficult to remember what we were fighting about."

Their unmistakable sound continued to resonate in the 1980s and beyond. In 1984 they reappeared on U.S. charts with the song 'On the Wings of a Nightingale,' written for them by Paul McCartney.

Two years later, Paul Simon released his hit album, 'Graceland,' on which the title track featured the brothers singing harmony.
In 1997 the Everlys received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.

Sarita Catherine Louise Choudhury worked with Denzel Washington in director Mira Nair’s ‘Mississippi Masala’—a filmmaker she now calls her ‘family’. The actress, born to an English mother and an Indian-Bengali father—now in her 50s, has touched the zenith of her career with movies like the ‘Mockingjay’ franchise and has, self-admittedly, gone through relatively gloomy phases in her career, too.

But, boy... is she back with a bang! In 2021 alone, the actress has featured in David Lowery’s mutli-starrer ‘The Green Knight’ and has also joined the cast of ‘Sex And The City’ reboot, ‘And Just Like That...’. So has she, along with an army of other Indian-origin actors, led the way for other Asian actors to follow? “I think the way you ‘pave’ the way for others is, I guess, to do what you love, study hard, and somehow something will happen, even if you start with playing Ophelia alone in your bedroom!” she tells us.

In an exclusive interview with WION, Sarita Choudhury shares her experience with working with Dev Patel, why she admires Priyanka Chopra Jonas—the producer—and what it means to truly be a global star.

Excerpts from our conversation with her:

‘I talked to a friend of mine, who studied witchcraft for the role’

In order to render complete justice to the role of Morgan le Fay—an enchantress and King Arthur’s half-sister—in ‘The Green Knight’, the actor sought help from friends who practise witchcraft and the helmer himself. “The script was so well written, I felt I understood the character immediately. A mother who loves her son but wants him to find his independence and a woman who is a believer in the spiritual magical world of nature and spells,” Sarita tells us.
“I talked to a friend of mine, Livia , who studied witchcraft from the point of view of ritual, nature and almost a pragmatic essential part of us. Also, David Lowery the director is very knowledgeable and specific. He was so helpful,” she goes on to add.

‘The film world and ‘representation’ is finally catching up with how the artistic world sees itself’

Sarita opines that Dev Patel, who shoulders the central role of Sir Gawain in ‘The Green Knight’, was tailor-made for his part and that he was ‘grateful’ just to be able to shoot with human co-stars. “I think Dev was perfect casting for this role. He is talented, funny, a young man becoming a man, an “everyman” type… Dev and I had so much fun on set. He had spent days shooting alone in the forest before I met him to do our scenes, and I think he was just grateful to have scenes with other actors and not just a horse and the Green Knight!”

Given her repertoire both in India and international waters, it is safe to say that Priyanka Chopra Jonas is the flag bearer of the Indian Diaspora in Hollywood—among others, of course—and she and a handful others, Dev Patel included, have (considerably) paved the path for others to tread on. Well, Sarita agrees partially. “I think the way you ‘pave’ the way for others is, I guess, to do what you love, study hard, and somehow something will happen, even if you start with playing Ophelia alone in your bedroom!... The film world and ‘representation’ is finally catching up with how the artistic world sees itself anyway.”

‘Priyanka Chopra Jonas does everything for us to be seen’

Whether there’s an insatiable hunger among the Indian school of artists to be labeled as ‘global’ stars is moot, says Sarita. “As an actor you have dreams of the kind of films you want to be in, the good scripts, the talented directors. Whether it’s a brilliant Indian director like Mira Nair or Zoya Akhtar shooting in India or wherever, or a great American director here, you hope to be part of it…. In terms of “Global,” as actors we don’t really have any intent to be perceived globally in a certain way. But if that is the result of following your dream no matter what the obstacles that is amazing. My dad had seen Satyajit Ray’s films in India when he was young, my mum had seen the same films in England, I saw them in Canada when I was at university. That’s global! And (that) makes me proud,” she says.
As for her ‘Evil eye’ producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sarita says she is in awe of her. “(From) Priyanka, I learnt is (that she is) a really good producer and did everything to promote us and help our film get seen. A job I have never done but admire!” concluded the actor.

Stormi is going to be a big sister!

Reportedly, Kylie Jenner is expecting her second child with her on-again, off-again love interest Travis Scott. The Kylie Cosmetics founder is already a mom to her 3-year-old daughter Stormi Webster, whom she shares with the rapper.

The news comes after Caitlyn Jenner sparked rumours on Thursday by announcing that she is expecting another grandchild, but, her son Burt Jenner is also expecting his third baby with girlfriend Valerie Pitalo.

Kylie and Travis have not publicly confirmed the news yet.

So far, Jenner has opened up his desire for a second child and to expand her family further. "Kylie talks about having another baby very frequently," an insider told E! News back in May 2019. "She would love to have another baby with Travis. She feels like she was truly meant to be a mother." However, later that year, the beauty mogul and Travis, 29, decided to put a break on their relationship and remained friendly and often spent time together as they co-parent Stormi.

"Travis and i are on great terms and our main focus right now is Stormi" the beauty mogul tweeted in October 2019. "Our friendship and our daughter is priority."

When 'Paw Patrol: The Movie' hits theatres and the Paramount+ streaming service on Friday, it will kick off one of ViacomCBS’ most ambitious efforts to take on Disney in the streaming wars.

The release of the feature film based on the animated children’s series about a group of rescue dogs who protect their community will be backed by an “eight figure” marketing blitz, with 1,800 TV ads across channels like Nickelodeon. It involves partnerships with almost 200 companies - from Kellogg’s cereal to Best Western hotels - on tie-ins for toys and other products, many of which will come with a free trial of Paramount+.

The strategy is the highest-profile example of a game plan ViacomCBS has developed to build out its kids’ franchises - including 'SpongeBob,' 'iCarly,' and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' - and use their success to help become a credible competitor in the war for paying streaming subscribers at a time when consolidation in the industry is leaving the company at a disadvantage.

“Disney is the gold standard in terms of really creating and monetizing franchises,” said CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi.

“ViacomCBS is looking to do the same thing, but they haven’t been as aggressive in terms of actually getting an early start and pivoting into streaming and taking some of the potentially game-changing actions that we’ve seen from other companies, especially with the way COVID affected the industry. So the ‘Paw Patrol’ film could be a litmus test in terms of going day-and-date streaming and theatrical.”

Friday will mark the first time ViacomCBS has debuted a film in theatres and on Paramount+ simultaneously, a decision the company announced in June. According to executives, it assessed the likelihood of parents bringing their unvaccinated children to theatres amid rising cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

In the near-term, ViacomCBS’ family films will likely debut theatrically and on Paramount+ on the same date, via a very short theatrical window followed by a Paramount+ release, or skip a theatrical release altogether, said Brian Robbins, the president of Nickelodeon, the ViacomCBS kids’ channel where “Paw Patrol” debuted as TV series in 2013.

The “Paw Patrol” film, the first theatrical spinoff of the TV show, has among the most tie-in products and global retailers of any film the company has distributed, said Pam Kaufman, President of ViacomCBS Consumer Products.

Canadian toy and children`s entertainment company Spin Master Corp, which owns the intellectual property rights to 'Paw Patrol,' kicked off the franchise with a partnership with ViacomCBS`s Nickelodeon in 2013.

It is also the first time ViacomCBS is using the full force of its properties and partnerships to drive people to Paramount+, the streaming service it crafted from the merger of CBS and Viacom. Many of the consumer product tie-ins include a free one-month subscription to the service, which costs $5 per month with ads and $10 per month ad-free.

The marketing push around the film “is not just in service of Paramount+,” said Robbins. “This is in service of the franchise of `Paw Patrol` which, in turn, as that franchise grows, so should our streaming service.”

New franchise content is crucial to Paramount+ subscriber growth, executives say, because it helps drive new subscribers, who then stay on the service so their children can watch older franchise content, like the six seasons of 'Paw Patrol' currently available on the streaming service.
ViacomCBS is also betting on its “Star Trek” franchise, among others, premiering it's first-ever animated 'Star Trek' series for families - 'Star Trek: Prodigy' - later this year on Paramount+, followed by a second viewing window on Nickelodeon.

Yet for 'Paw Patrol: The Movie,' success across consumer products sales, box office tickets and new streaming subscribers is far from guaranteed. Families may prefer to stay home rather than go to movie theatres or shop at brick and mortar stores that are promoting the film in their aisles. A preschool film has a limited audience compared to multi-generational offerings from Marvel and others.

And on streaming, ViacomCBS is among the smallest of its peers, with 42 million total streaming subscribers compared to Disney’s 174 million. Even as ViacomCBS is seeking organic growth, non-Executive Chair Shari Redstone has sought partners as Discovery and Amazon bulk up through their acquisitions of AT&T’s WarnerMedia assets and MGM, respectively.

On Wednesday, ViacomCBS and Comcast announced a joint streaming service, SkyShowtime, that will launch in smaller European markets next year.

“You want to create a virtuous cycle of content creation and monetization, and I wouldn’t say that ViacomCBS is the gold standard of doing that yet, and that’s probably one of the strategic rationales of the CBS-Viacom merger: to create more scale and create more franchises,” said Amobi.

However, the Delta variant of COVID-19 has led to a rise in infections in the United States and elsewhere, raising concern about whether audiences will feel safe sitting in cinemas. Box office receipts for recent big releases, including 'Black Widow' and 'The Suicide Squad,' have been disappointing as Hollywood studios have released some films on streaming platforms. Takings at the box office for North America are running about 50% behind the same period in 2019, according to Variety. Sony Corp`s movie studio last week delayed the release of the superhero sequel "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" by nearly a month to mid-October.

American rapper Kendrick Lamar is producing his final album with music label Top Dawg Entertainment.
In a cryptic post shared to his social media accounts.

On August 20, in a cryptic post shared on social media, Lamar linked to a folder titled 'nu thoughts', directing readers to a letter he has shared on a website called oklama.com. In the note, the rapper — who has remained relatively silent on social media since the release of his 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning album 'Damn' — reflected on his career as a musician and dropped clues about his final TDE album. Here's what we know about Lamar's fifth album so far.
In a letter meant for fans, while reflecting on his time as an artiste and the impact he's had on pop culture, Lamar indicated that his fifth album will be a reflection of his personal ups and downs in the last 17 years in the music business.

"I spend most of my days with fleeting thoughts. Writing. Listening. And collecting old Beach cruisers. The morning rides keep me on a hill of silence. I go months without a phone. Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family. While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next," he wrote.

Expressing gratitude for the last two decades, Lamar said that the future is uncertain but he would like to continue with his true calling in life. "As I produce my final TDE album, I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood. May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life's calling. There's beauty in completion. And always faith in the unknown. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I've prayed for you all. See you soon enough. — oklama," Lamar wrote.

While the celebrated rapper did not mention whether this is his last album ever, it is definitely his final album with Top Dawg Entertainment, indicating than any future releases would be shared under a new label, if at all.
Towards the end, Lamar declared that he would see us all 'soon enough' but did not specify a release date for his new album or even the name of it.

The Tiger Shroff-starrer 'Ganapath' will be a major festive bonanza for fans!

When Pooja Entertainment announced the launch of a mega-budget, futuristic, action thriller 'Ganapath', ripples of excitement and anticipation were unleashed in the trade circles because the Vikas Bahl directorial is supposed to be the most lavishly produced and genre-defining film starring Tiger Shroff.

Josh is soaring high! Kangana Ranaut begins filming 'Tejas', shares photo

Right from its poster launch to the announcement of the leading lady Kriti Sanon, the film stuck to a stylish template that gave audiences a taste of the thrills to come. Pooja Entertainment and Good co. have now raised this excitement to a fever pitch by announcing that the film will release on 23rd December 2022.

The team also dropped a jaw-dropping video teaser that makes you realize the massive scale and cool quotient of the film. Tiger's punchline, "Apun ko janta ne aur God ne bola aane ko, to apun aa re la hai", seems like one hell of a commitment. The kind we would look forward to see in action.
