After living through a pandemic for nearly two years, Americans, as it turns out, were in desperate need of a laugh.

That may explain why Paramount`s go-for-broke action-comedy 'Jackass Forever' triumphed at the domestic box office while Roland Emmerich`s disaster epic 'Moonfall' turned into an epic disaster.

'Jackass Forever,' the fourth instalment in the ongoing saga of projectiles to the groin, collected $23 million from 3,604 North American locations in its debut, landing on the higher end of expectations. The latest 'Jackass,' starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man and other daredevils from MTV days, had been widely expected to win the weekend, but its victory is still surprising and impressive because it has been some time since a pure comedy has claimed the top spot on box office charts.

In catapulting to first place, 'Jackass Forever' finally took down reigning champion 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' which has spent six of the last seven weeks at No. 1.

'Jackass Forever' has been a (unexpected?) hit with critics, notching a strong 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 'B+' CinemaScore from audience members. Variety`s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman had positive things to say, writing in his review that "Johnny Knoxville and company are now middle aged, but that hasn`t slowed their juvenile masochistic fervor." And with a $10 million production budget, 'Jackass Forever' will be laughing all the way to the bank.

"It`s extremely hard to keep it fresh and funny for this long, but `Jackass` is doing that," says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "At a cost of only $10 million, the film is going to be very profitable."

'Moonfall,' the weekend`s other new nationwide release, has less to celebrate. The science-fiction catastrophe film crash-landed on the lower end of projections, bringing in $10.1 million from 3,446 venues. Those ticket sales are potentially problematic because 'Moonfall' cost $140 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive independent films in history. Commercial sentiment may not help; moviegoers stuck the film with an unenthusiastic 'C+' CinemaScore. Unless the movie becomes a huge hit overseas, 'Moonfall' likely will not become a financial success.

Emmerich, having turned 'Independence Day,' 'The Day After Tomorrow' and '2012' into commercial cash-cows, had once been the premier chronicler of big-budget catastrophe. But in the case of 'Moonfall,' which Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Pena and Donald Sutherland and centers on efforts to prevent the moon from colliding with Earth, his movies aren`t offering the kind of stress-free escapism that pandemic-fatigued audiences are looking for.

"At the moment, with the world coming apart in real time, who wants to sit through a disaster story? It`s more fun to laugh at `Jackass,`" says Gross.

Just as the coronavirus outbreak roars toward its peak in Germany, Berlinale organisers have opted for an 11-day, in-person celebration of new movies and a gala ceremony to award its Golden Bear top prize.

The festival said it was crucial to give cinemas a boost when Covid-19 fears had fuelled home viewing on small screens, and the German government called the "courageous" step of holding the event "a sign of hope".
For decades, Bollywood has painted a picture of the conventional hero who fights the bad guys and emerges as the righteous messiah. A typical film has witnessed a hero and a villain fighting against each other for the good over the evil. However, a few stars opted for the eccentric choice of slipping into a grey character and most importantly, still won the hearts of the audience.

While building a name for themselves in the industry, most actors choose the goody image playing the ideal hero, only a few risk-takers went darker early in their career.
Here's a look at few Bollywood stars who dared to don the negative shade in the beginning of their journeys:

Shah Rukh Khan:

Touted as the 'King of Romance', Shah Rukh has defined the ideal hero with his charm and lover-boy avatar.
Bollywood actor Sanjay Mishra needs no introduction. The actor who has made his mark in the Hindi film industry has been gracing our screens with his phenomenal acting for over three decades now.

Mishra wins everyone hearts with his quirky roles in the star-studded project.

In an exclusive chat with WION, Sunjay Mishra opened up about his recently released movie 'Farmhouse 36' on ZEE5, his connection with comedy and why he thinks there are no side characters in films.

Q- How is 'Farmhouse 36' special for you?

It is very special for me because of Subhas Ghai. I remember, we used to bunk classes in NSD(National School of Drama) to watch movies like 'Karma' and others, and now he's writing movies on me. So for an actor, It's a very special moment. A legendary person is writing a movie by thinking about you. No matter how the movie works and come out, it is a special thing.

Q- Due to the pandemic, much work shifted to OTT. How do you react to the same?

I remember, one of my movies was released in theatres and was doing well. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the movie’s theatrical run was abruptly stopped. But months later, the movie was released on OTT and people watched it. I liked the concept of OTT- People are locked in their homes but work and entertainment is both possible within their homes.

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";

Cinema is my favourite mode of entertainment. For us acting is the main thing, we are doing it, that's enough - no matter which platforms it's coming out. Theatres is a different thing, it has its demands, but on OTT and cinema, acting is the same- just the medium is different. One good thing about cinema is that it's like a book, we read it for two hours and it's finished. But on OTT there are multiple series to watch.

Q- You rose to fame as a side character, what do you have about your journey to stardom?

A: Sanjay Mishra was never launched yet I made my space over the years. There's no side character, I call it a character. We have given it different names like the main character, the lead character, but for me, every character matters in every project.

Q- Do you ever get stereotyped?

People have always tried to stereotype, but in my career, I have got a chance to work in different films whether it's 'Phas Gaye Re Obama', 'Kaamyaab' and others. So these movies saved me and helped me prove myself as an actor.
For me acting matters. It's a normal thing that a person will inherit a legacy. Still, you have to make your mark.

Q- Ever felt like leaving acting?

After doing and listening about the same work for years, you get bored. So, in every one or two years, I got a feeling to leave- it's enough, have proved my worth and it's time to move on and do something else and explore the world. See, It's not like I will leave the industry and act. It totally depends on my mood when I get some good projects, I'll do otherwise will do something else.
