According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), it has caused extensive damage at 33 properties and forcefully entered at least 28 homes. The giant bear has eluded capture for more than seven months.

"The incidents primarily occurred during the summer and fall of 2021, when the bear was in hyperphagia, adding calories to survive the winter," said wildlife department spokesperson Peter Tira.

Billionaire Carl Icahn, who is a shareholder in McDonald's, has expressed concerns over welfare of pigs in its food chain.

He has nominated two members to its board of directors in an escalating fight over the treatment of pigs by the burger chain's suppliers.

"Carl Icahn has nominated Leslie Samuelrich and Maisie Ganzler for the 2022 election," McDonald's said in a statement, adding that the board would "evaluate the nominees as it would any other candidates proposed to it."

Also read | This ex-McDonald's cook is now the 11th richest person in the world

Icahn's "stated focus in making this nomination relates to a narrow issue regarding the Company's pork commitment", it added, in a reference to the use of so-called gestation crates.

Icahn has previously said that it is "obscene" how the animals used for McDonald's products are treated.

Icahn has insisted on new McDonald's commitments, including requiring all of the company's US pork suppliers to move to "crate-free" pork, and set specific timeframes, the company said.

Also read | McDonald’s sacked CEO returns $105 million severance deal over misconduct

Such a commitment would be impossible given the current supply "and would harm the company's shared pursuit of providing customers with high quality products at accessible prices," the statement said.

According to the Humane Society, the metal enclosures, used to contain sows for almost all of a pregnancy, are so small that the animal cannot turn around, and can lead to health issues such as infection or anatomical problems.

Icahn is known for taking stakes in companies to ask for radical measures before reaping huge profits, but he has said animal welfare concerns are behind his intervention.

"I really do feel emotional about these animals and the unnecessary suffering," he told Bloomberg.

McDonald's pledged in 2012 to source pork from producers who do not use small crates to house pregnant sows. Icahn pushed for the change behind the scenes, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month.

"Since making this commitment, McDonald's has led the industry, and today an estimated 30%-35% of US pork production has moved to group housing systems," the company's statement said.

"By the end of 2022, the Company expects to source 85 percent to 90 percent of its US pork volumes from sows not housed in gestation crates during pregnancy," it added.

Billionaire Carl Icahn, who is a shareholder in McDonald's, has expressed concerns over welfare of pigs in its food chain. He has nominated two members to its board of directors in an escalating fight over the treatment of pigs by the burger chain's suppliers. "Carl Icahn has nominated Leslie Samuelrich and Maisie Ganzler for the 2022 election," McDonald's said in a statement, adding that the board would "evaluate the nominees as it would any other candidates proposed to it." Icahn has previously said that it is "obscene" how the animals used for McDonald's products are treated. Icahn has insisted on new McDonald's commitments, including requiring all of the company's US pork suppliers to move to "crate-free" pork, and set specific timeframes, the company said. ''I honestly don’t mind the shots…they make me feel like a doctor/chemist…but the bloating is a b****h, so I humbly beg you to stop asking if I’m pregnant because while I know it’s said with excited, good intentions, it just kind of sucks to hear because I am the opposite of pregnant! But also like please stop asking people, anyone, if they’re pregnant. I said this in the comments and got yelled at because the internet is wild but I’d rather be the one to tell you and not some poor woman who will look you in the eyes through tears and that’s how you finally learn. Anyhow, Iove youuuuu??,'' she added further.

The cookbook author revealed that she's undergoing IVF treatments in the hopes of having another child with her husband John Legend. Taking to her Instagram handle, Teigen wrote, “Hiiii. I posted about it in my stories, but I wanted to let you guys know I’m balls deep in another IVF cycle to save as many eggos as I possibly can and hopefully make some strong, healthy embryos,” Director James Gunn & 'Peacemaker' star Jennifer Holland are engaged!
Fashionistas braved gale-force winds in London on Friday to attend the first Fashion Week shows, with a schedule dominated by up-and-coming young designers.

Gusts ripped through the streets of the British capital as crowds, wrapped up in coats and hats, flocked to the week's first live shows with attendees, which make up about half of the five-day event's timetable.

It kicked off with the sustainable label SOHUMAN, created by Spaniard Javier Aparici, who promises "radical transparency" on the factories used to make his garments.

He showed an ultra-feminine collection of cocktail dresses in red and black featuring applique flowers, sheer panels and giant bows.

Young British designers then came under the spotlight, with Saul Nash showcasing a relaxed but luxurious streetwear collection of merino wool tracksuits, hoodies, puffer coats and scarves, many emblazoned with his Saul logo.

With a background in dance and performance, Nash graduated from the Royal College of Art in menswear in 2018.

Street styles, neon kick off London Fashion Week

The pink Marilyn Monroe-style dress worn by pop star Madonna in her 1984 'Material Girl' music video and a drum kit used by the prototype Beatles are some of the items going under the hammer at a music memorabilia auction in California.

The Madonna lot, consisting of a pink satin dress with bustier top and oversized pink satin bow, satin opera gloves and rhinestone bracelets, is estimated to fetch between $100,000 and $200,000 when it goes under the hammer in May, as part of the 'Music Icons' auction at Julien`s Auctions.
"We have Madonna`s `Material Girl` ensemble that she wore in the video `Material Girl` in 1985, where she was channeling Marilyn Monroe from the 1950s film that Marilyn did, `Gentlemen Prefer Blondes`," said Darren Julien, the founder and CEO of Julien`s Auctions.

"It`s one of the most historic and iconic pieces of Madonna... very few items that are this iconic of hers are in the public domain," he added.

The dress was originally made for a 1980 television movie about Monroe but was rented from a movie prop company for use in Madonna's 'Material Girl' music video. The video was inspired by Monroe's performance of 'Diamonds Are a Girl`s Best Friend.'

A rare drum kit from John Lennon and Paul McCartney`s first band, The Quarrymen, is also going under the hammer, with estimates from Julien`s Auctions between $400,000 and $600,000.

"The main thing we have is Colin Hanton`s drum kit that he used as a Quarryman and The Quarrymen, of course, was founded by John (Lennon) and Paul (McCartney), which was the very first band that they were in together. And Colin was the drummer from 1956 to 1959," said Julien.

"Ringo Starr`s drum kit that we sold in 2015, we sold for $2.1 million so this is a really important piece of rock and roll history, and there's very few items that come up available from The Quarrymen," he added.

Other items up for auction include Bruce Springsteen`s hand-written 'Glory Road' lyrics, The Beatles #0000002 White Album Mono Pressing, and the t-shirt worn on the cover of Bon Jovi`s 1986 album 'Slippery When Wet.'

The ongoing hijab controversy continues to draw reactions from celebrities. Now, the controversial matter has gained international limelight as supermodel Bella Hadid has reacted to it.

Hadid, who never shies away from speaking her mind, on Thursday called out India and many other countries for banning Hijab.

Taking to her Instagram stories, the supermodel shared her thoughts on the matter alongside screengrabs of news articles questioning the hijab ban around the world including India.

The 25-year-old model said in an Instagram post, “It’s not your job to tell women whether or not they can STUDY or PLAY SPORTS, ESPECIALLY when it is pertaining to their faith and safety.''

''In other forms of discrimination: I urge France, India, Quebec, Belgium, and any other countries in the world who are discriminatory against Muslim women, to rethink what decisions you have made or are trying to make in the future about a body that is not yours. It’s not your job to tell women what they should or shouldn’t wear, especially when it is pertaining to faith and safety,'' she wrote.

Further saying how 'Islamophobic' the world is, she wrote, ''You can’t be a civil worker or work in hospitals with a Hijab. To get an internship, most universities will say, the only way to get one is to take off the hijab. It’s ridiculous and really shows how Islamophobic the world is without even acknowledging it. In regards to these new Bills that are either in the process of being passed or have already.''

''It needs to stop,'' she added.
He's not on social media, he doesn't use a smartphone and he's too cool to even care about Facebook or Instagram, but this 60-year-old is a social media sensation. Mammikka, a daily wage worker from Kozhikode in Kerala has shot fame and all it took was a single photoshoot. WION spoke to Shareek Vayalil, the man behind the lens on how this unique concept came into being.
A wedding photographer, Shareek also owns a store that rents out wedding suits for men. In order to promote both his businesses, Shareek has often relied upon the most frugal idea. Instead of downloading images from the internet and placing large-sized prints of actors in front of his store, he thinks like a photographer.

"Whenever we wish to make an advertisement, we do it with my friends or relatives. I ask them to be our model and we have photo shoots with them. That's how we picked Mammikka, who is also related to me" he says.

The shoot was done in a single day, at an IT park in Kozhikode and also at a garage where earthmovers and heavy vehicles are parked, Shareek recalls. However, the photoshoot was not the only novel experience for Mammikka. On the day prior, he underwent a style makeover and grooming session. From beard trimming to hair colouring, it was a process that was meant to transform the humble 60-year-old into a dashing model.

According to Mammikka, this shoot was the first time that he was wearing a suit. In the typical Keralite style, the worker has always stuck to the traditional Kerala Mundu(dhoti) and a shirt.

"The photographer told me that he'll help me out with getting suited up and all… Initially it felt a little awkward wearing the suit, then it felt pretty good… then he asked me to turn this way and that way and pose and he kept clicking" he describes his maiden modelling experience.

As the man behind the lens, Shareek is truly impressed with his first-time model, who has shot to fame in no time. "I had only basic expectations about this shoot and our first-time model, Mammikka. But, the way he carried himself and posed stylishly without fear or inhibition, is amazing… I was taken aback. In fact, this is someone who hasn't even taken a picture of himself in a studio.." he says.

With just the first handful of pictures having created a huge impact on social media, Shareek is thrilled, as he has hundreds of to-be-released photos from the shoot with Mammikka.

With his maiden shoot having gone so well, the model is beyond thrilled. "Hearing all the great things that people are saying about me, I feel I should prepare better and pose even more stylishly next time.. Everyone is showing me the pictures of my shoot… So next time, given a chance, I'll go ahead with it" he says cheerily. Given a chance, the 60-year-old says he's even ready to act in films.

Australian pop singer Troye Sivan, whose YouTube videos and music have inspired a generation of young LGBTQ+ people, wants his first major film role to combat ignorance around HIV/AIDS.

In 'Three Months', Sivan plays 17-year-old Caleb, who is exposed to HIV after a one-night stand on the eve of his high school graduation.
The film details the shame and anxiety Caleb experiences while waiting three months for a diagnosis. Current medical guidelines require 12 weeks from exposure to be 100% certain.

Set in 2011, when a positive diagnosis was no longer a death sentence but fear and ignorance remained rife, the film explores the lingering stigma faced by people living with HIV.

"I think there`s a lot of, not necessarily misinformation, but a lot of kind of ignorance (around HIV)," Sivan told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video call from Los Angeles.

"I would love it if this movie plays a part in getting rid of the stigma around HIV and educates people on the fact that with access to healthcare, this is not a death sentence at all anymore."

The 26-year-old star rose to prominence after joining YouTube in 2007, coming out as gay in 2013 and becoming known for his music, personable nature and collaborations with other YouTubers. He now has more than 7.5 million subscribers.

Sivan released his debut album "Blue Neighbourhood" in 2015 with his second, "Bloom", in 2018 peaking at No. 4 on the U.S. album chart. He is one of the most streamed artists of all time on Spotify (Top 200) with more than 5 billion total streams.

Sivan has had smaller roles in South African teen drama "Spud" and Hollywood blockbuster "X-Men".

But "Three Months" - to be released on Feb. 23 on the Paramount+ streaming platform - marks his first major lead role. For the film`s writer and director, Jared Frieder, Sivan was the obvious choice.

"I always thought of Troye for this role," Frieder said in a video interview, adding that he started writing the script when Troye was rising to fame on YouTube.

CHANGING TIMES

Sivan was born in South Africa and raised in Australia. He now splits his life between Los Angeles and Melbourne.
Sivan said he was never schooled on either LGBTQ+ issues or HIV/AIDS while growing up.

"During sex ed at school, I was never ever, ever taught about HIV specifically ... gay sex was never, never spoken about."
There were also few openly LGBTQ+ characters on screen.

"When I was growing up, I remember the two, maybe three times I saw queer stories in TV and film. And I remember it being a very, very, very formative experience," said Sivan.

"Those were kind of like, these rare, rare moments that I remember felt so private to me, that I was like `Oh, my God, I need to watch this in the middle of the night`," he said. Frieder said he hoped "Three Months" would help fill the gap for LGBTQ+ people growing up, wherever they are in the world.

"I want people to feel less alone. If this movie helps kids see themselves on screen, especially queer kids, that would be the joy of my life," he said.

Sneakers made from banana or pineapple leaves, dresses from nettles or fish scales -- the search for sustainable materials has taken the fashion industry to some wild places.

Sneakers made from banana or pineapple leaves, dresses from nettles or fish scales -- the search for sustainable materials has taken the fashion industry to some wild places. Experts warn these new textiles are not a quick fix for fashion's enormous problems with over-consumption and waste but may be a necessary step in developing cleaner technologies. "You could possibly eat the final product," said Hannes Schoenegger, co-founder of Bananatex, which uses leaves from banana trees in the Philippines to make bags, T-shirts and a line of shoes for H&M that sold out within two hours. He was speaking at the Premiere Vision Paris conference, where industry professionals gather to find out which fabrics will dominate coming seasons. "We only harvest the sides of the plants, and they're already growing in the forest, so no chemicals, pesticides or even water are used," Schoenegger added. He was among multiple stalls presenting new bio-sourced materials. Brazil-based Nova Kaeru offered leather made from the discarded scales of the giant pirarucu fish and another from the tropical "elephant ear" plant. Nearby, Ananas Anam showed off some Nike shoes made from waste pineapple leaves. Nettles are in - These textiles can be relatively niche, but some companies are determined to bring them into the mainstream. Spanish firm Pyratex offers multiple options, from recycling the waste of corn and sugar cane production, to making fibres from Icelandic seaweed, Chinese bamboo or Austrian wood.
Valentine's Day is a day of love, of showing gestures, and of letting your loved ones know how much they mean to you. But after years of celebrating this day in somewhat clichéd ways, it's time for some new ideas to enjoy the day with that special someone. So, if you are among those who want to tread the path less taken, here are a few refreshing ideas that will redefine romance and also take your special someone by surprise.

Stir up a romantic storm:

The pandemic unleashed the dormant chef in many house-bound souls but even more satisfying than a wholesome meal is the joy of cooking it together. So why not find a cooking class you can join together, give each other a dish to master and have a potluck on Valentine's Day? Or just create a buffet for two comprising all your favorite finger foods, bring out the fairy lights, deck up the backyard, balcony, or verandah with candles, throw some cushions and rugs around, play some ambient music, and feast on home-cooked romance!

Walk into the sunset:
If you have been deeply impacted by the fault lines the pandemic has expanded, how about making a difference while spending oodles of quality time together and meeting your fitness goals? Every year, Oxfam India organizes a Trailwalker to raise funds for various causes. This year, the theme is #WalkInMyShoes and the challenge aims to help women and girls in crisis. Together, you can choose to clock in 100 KM, 50 KM, or 25 KM over a span of 10 days and go for a romantic walk every single day till you reach your goal. Remember the adage, "The couple that walks together, stays together?" Okay, we were just kidding but just so you know, Oxfam Virtual Trailwalker Challenge has two slots to choose from - 18 to 27 February or 4 to 13 March 2022. So go ahead and bask in the afterglow of love and a good deed.

Join a hobby class:
Films like 'Dirty Dancing', 'Chocolate' and 'Ghost' inspired legions of fans to learn dancing, chocolate crafting, and pottery but there are many other engaging hobbies that you can enjoy learning together. Just find a common passion, pursue it and it will bring you joy for years. It could be candle making, scrapbooking, music, gardening, or even decoupage and if it creates an intimate ritual of creating something together, what can be a better gift to give each other even beyond Valentine's Day?

Gift wellness to each other:
The pandemic has brought the focus back on health and wellness so how about making a commitment to a better quality of life and going to a Yoga retreat together? Or engaging a teacher who can address specific health issues and teach you both how best to channel inner anxieties, release stress, and let go of physical and mental blocks? Love after all cannot be limited to just one special day but is all about a lifetime of care for the self and the other. Choose from vinyasa yoga for free-flowing energy, power yoga to lose extra pounds, outdoor yoga to synergize with Nature and the list goes on. Apart from pushing each other to stretch beyond limitations and strengthening your bond in the bargain, you can also enjoy benefits like increased flexibility and balance, reduced stress levels, and increased endorphins.

Take a Hike:
John Muir famously said, "Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” With the pandemic blues slowly dissipating, head for the outdoors and go hiking across a scenic trail, camp under the stars in safe, designated campsites, get away from the madding crowds to tune into each other with only bird song in attendance. What can be more romantic than giving your attention to each other amid pure, unsullied vistas? Check sites like Thrillophilia to find out special hiking trails you can explore together to make memories of a lifetime.
