The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has introduced a new incentive scheme to reward cricketers who will prioritise playing Test cricket. As per the new scheme, if a cricketer plays more than 75% of Test matches in a season, he shall be rewarded with an increment of 300% in his overall match fees.

According to reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel had recommended this incentive scheme to encourage cricketers to give importance to first-class cricket.

The BCCI secretary posted an image on his social media handle X, previously known as Twitter, citing an example of how this scheme will work and under what circumstances the players will receive the incentive.

Shah shared that the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for the senior men's team will give players extra incentive other than the usual match fees for taking part in the longest format of the game.

As this new scheme is backdated to include the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven of the nine contested matches (77.7%) that season, will earn INR 45 lakh per Test in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakh per Test. For prioritising Test cricket, the BCCI will reward Pujara with a total sum of INR 4.2 crores (including incentives), as against INR 1.05 crores, which he previously earned in one season.

“I am pleased to announce the initiation of the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes. Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs,” Jay Shah wrote in a post on X.

Under the scheme, the players featuring in 50-65% of Tests in a season will earn INR 30 lakhs per Test, besides their match fees, while those who will appear in less than 50% of the matches scheduled in a season will not be eligible for the extra money.

Time to choose Test over shorter formats

This scheme has come into action after the Indian board took action against two top stars – Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, for ignoring playing Ranji Trophy despite directives from the BCCI.

Following BCCI’s second warning to all centrally contracted players who are neither picked for any squad nor getting treated at the NCA for any injury, which included Ishan and Iyer, the board left them out of the central contract list for the upcoming season, punishing them for not abiding by the board’s instructions.

However, with this scheme taking centre stage, several players will be keen on pushing to play for India in the longest format as against choosing to play franchise-based T20 Leagues for extra money.

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne has said that he never felt insecure about his spot in the playing XI despite a string of low scores. Labuschagne's comments came after scoring 90 in first innings of the second Test agains New Zealand on day 2 (Mar 9). Thanks to Labuschagne's gritty batting, Australia took an important 94-run lead in the first innings, scoring 256 in reply to New Zealand's 162.

"Did I feel like I was going lose my spot? I'd say no," Labuschange said after the day's play on Saturday. "That's what the confidence of this team has done. The coaches, the selectors, the captain, they're very clear with trusting in the players and trusting that we do have the best six, seven batters in the country here.

"If you're going through a rough patch, what we've been able to do over a period of time is, everyone's picking up each other's slack. When someone's not doing well, someone else picks it up.

"I felt like I probably haven't been at my best for a while. Since the SCG, the two 60s in each innings, I've been a bit short on runs and just short of that big score where I'm really making it count. But it's nice to be once again back in the runs," he added.

As for the match, New Zealand started poorly in the second innings as they lost Will Young for a team score of six. Tom Latham and Kane Williamson, who's also playing his 100th Test, then added 105 runs for the second wicket. Australia skipper Pat Cummins broke the stand by sending Cummins back.

Latham (65 not out) and Rachin Ravindra were at the crease for the hosts as New Zealand finished the day at 134/2, having taken a lead of 40 runs.

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon is hoping to exploit New Zealand batter Kane Williamson's batting in the upcoming second Test of the ongoing two-match series. The second Trans-Tasman Test starts Friday (Mar 8) in Christchurch and will be Williamson's 100th for New Zealand. Lyon, who had dismissed Kane in the first Test, had said after the first match that he has spotted something in batter's technique against him. Australia, notably won the first Test by 172 runs.

“That was a plan (coming around the stumps), and it's nice when plans come off pretty well straight away. I've noticed something in Kane's batting against my bowling, so I tried to exploit that," Lyon said about Williamson's dismissal in the first Test. The Aussie, however, didn't reveal any further and said: “There's one Test to come, mate.”

Williamson, after the first Test, also acknowledged Lyon's skills and said ahead of his 100th Test: “Lyon is an incredible bowler and the surface in Wellington certainly was a competitive surface. It brought the spinners into play more than we thought going into it."

Williamson, however, refuted the claim and said: "I don't think anybody is forced to retire. I think last week, he had a fantastic week and it was reflecting on what was an incredible career."

"I think it all makes sense a little bit now. There's no sugarcoating it: I think it's a forced retirement. If you listen to Wagner's press conference, he was retiring, but it was after this last Test match [against Australia]. So he did make himself available," Taylor had said on a ESPN podcast about Wagner.

Speaking on Bairstow's achievement, Stoke said: "Playing for England means so much to Jonny and means so much to his family as well and to play over 100 ODIs, 100 Tests - a lot of cricket for England - it means a hell of a lot to him. He deserves everything that gets spoken about him in the build-up to the game and throughout the week as well."

For Ashwin, India skipper Rohit Sharma said: "It is a big milestone. He has been a big match winner for us. What he has done for us, no praise is enough. His performances over 5-7 years, every series he has contributed. It is rare to have players like him."

Notably, Ashwin also completed his 500 Test wickets in the series, becoming only the second bowler from India after Anil Kumble to achieve the feat.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins says that he'll quit the captaincy the day ace spinner Nathan Lyon retires. Australia skipper Pat Cummins says that he'll quit the captaincy the day ace spinner Nathan Lyon retires. Cummins, however, backs Lyon to continue for four more years, given the spinner takes care of his body. The Aussie skipper made the remarks following Australia's 172-run win over New Zealand in the first Test on Sunday, March 3. Notably, Lyon took a six-fer in second innings to help Australia win - his 24th in the Tests. "I've already told him (Lyon) the day he retires I'm definitely giving up the captaincy because it makes my life a helluva lot easier," said Cummins after the win in first Test. "The only barrier really is his body, so if he looks after his body and makes sure he's right for 10 Test matches a year, or whatever it is, I'd absolutely love him to play until 2027. And I don't think there's much that's going to get in his way," he added. New Zealand skipper Tim Southee has indicated that retired pacer Neil Wagner might be called out of retirement for the second Test against Australia. Southee's comments came after New Zealand lost the first Test by 172 runs and debutant pacer Will O'Rourke got injured. Southee, however, did not confirm Wagner's involvement outrightly and said that it depended on O'Rourke's injury.

"We haven't had a lot of discussions as yet," Southee said after the match. "We'll see how Will scrubs up. The physio hasn't sort of put a timeframe on it or how bad it is. We'll just wait and see how Will goes over the next couple of days. I'm sure there'll be an update in the next 24 hours.

Tim Southee keeps door open for retired Neil Wagner's return after loss in first Test against Australia

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has agreed that his team's collapse in the second innings of the ongoing Test against New Zealand is a concern. Australia were bowled out for a paltry 164 on day 2 (March 2) and let go of the chance to bat hosts New Zealand out of the Test. Kiwi spinner Glenn Phillips was the one who ripped apart Aussie batting, taking a five-for despite the marginal experience in red-ball cricket prior to this Test.

"I'll never criticise our batters the way they go about it because they've been exceptional for a number of years now. But then you've got to give credit to the bowlers and this is my big thing. Bowlers are actually there to bowl good balls. And it's not always the batters' fault getting out and bowlers are allowed to come up with plans and execute and take wickets. No doubt there will be some frustration in there," Lyon said after the day's play.

Notably, it was Lyon who top scored with 41 as Australia set a target of 369 for Zealand. This is the second time in his Test career that Lyon was the top scorer for Australia in an innings.

The bowler also agreed that he has a task at his hand on day 3 for the Kiwis who have already wiped off 111 runs off the target for the loss of three wickets and need 258 runs more. Rachin Ravindra (56) and Daryl Mitchell (12) are at the crease for New Zealand.

"I'll continue to try and put some over spin on the ball and try and get the bounce and try and hit the stickers on the bat and challenge the guys' defence on the crease," said Lyon.

In the first innings, Australia scored 383, thanks to Cameron Green's sensational 174 not out and bowled the Kiwis out for just 179, to take a lead of 204 runs.

Notably, both of his hundreds have been double tons as well - 209 in first innings of the second Test in Vizag and 2014 not out in second innings of the third Test in Rajkot. His batting exploits have ensured India an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series.

Kishan rejected BCCI's offer to play in England Tests

Keeper-batter KS Bharat was out of touch in the first two matches, failing with the bat in hand. The selectors were keen on replacing him with Ishan Kishan in the playing XI for the remaining games, but with Ishan refusing to accept the offer, as per reports.

Following the South Africa ODIs late last year, Ishan informed BCCI of its decision to remain unavailable for selection, citing mental fatigue. The BCCI, soon after, released a mandate asking him and Shreyas Iyer to make themselves available for their Ranji Trophy teams. Amidst the backlash Ishan and Shreyas Iyer received following declining to appear for their respective state sides in the Ranji Trophy, the BCCI released them from the latest list of centrally contracted players.

England's Test coach Brendon McCullum has acknowledged that Ollie Robinson put in a subpar performance in the recently-concluded Ranchi Test against India. The medium pacer, playing his first Test of the five-match series, failed to take any wicket across two innings and dropped a catch too. With the bat, Robinson, however, scored 58 in the first innings but got out on duck in the second innings. His failure with ball although is something for which he's facing a lot of flak.

“Everything he did leading into the Test match suggested we’d see not just the Ollie Robinson we’d seen previously but a better version of it,” said McCullum on Tuesday (Feb 27).

"Ollie Robinson, I was really disappointed with him in this game. I felt that he bowled, his pace was pedestrian, and he was quite down on pace. He looks like a bowler who needs a good run of game time now, not necessarily with England either," Atherton said on Sky Cricket Podcast.

India batter Shreyas Iyer will be playing in upcoming Ranjit Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) semi-final match for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu. This comes after Iyer, who is not part of India's Test squad for ongoing series England, opted out of Mumbai's quarter-final match due to back spasm. Iyer had last played in Ranji Trophy in December for Mumbai against Andhra Pradesh.

There's been a lot of talk about Iyer and Ishan Kishan for not playing the domestic cricket despite instructions by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Talking about the proposed changes in pay structure, a source in the BCCI told media outlet the Indian Express: “For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract. This is to ensure that players turn out for more red-ball cricket. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket.”

The discussion seems to stem from the situation around Iyer and Kishan. Both the players were asked to take part in ongoing Ranji Trophy for their respective teams after not being named in India's squad for last three Tests against England in the ongoing series. Kishan has taken a leave due to personal reasons since South Africa tour in December 2023, while Iyer was part of the India's squad for England Tests in the first two Tests before being dropped.

Despite the BCCI's instructions, Kishan did not have a word with Jharkhand cricket Association (JCA) while Iyer opted out of the Mumbai's Ranji Trophy fixture citing back injury issue. The National Cricket Academy (NCA), however, refuted Iyer's claim and said that he's match-fit.

The talks of raising the match fees/bonus comes at a time when players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have decided to opt out of domestic red-ball cricket (Ranji Trophy) and instead focus on the upcoming T20 tournament Indian Premier League (IPL). Currently, a player gets around $20,000 (INR 15 lakh) to play a Test for India. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket.” Also Read: Namibia batter Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton scores fastest T20I hundred Apart from Tests, players also get around $8,000 (INR 6 lakh) per ODI and $4,000 (INR 3 lakh) for T20 internationals. All this is in addition to the BCCI's yearly central contract amount in multiple grades.

BCCI mulling on rewarding Test cricketers with bonus apart from match fee - Report

India captain Rohit Sharma is keen on picking those players for the Test team who are willing to grind in all conditions, challenging themselves to succeed in cricket's toughest format than those who don’t have that burning desire to play Tests in the first place. Amid reports of BCCI urging centrally contracted players, not picked to play for any Indian team at the moment, to appear for their state sides in the Ranji Trophy, Rohit, without naming anyone, made his intentions clear.

With young Dhruv Jurel making the right noises with his match-winning performance in both innings against England in the Ranchi Test, Rohit complimented him, explaining why such players tend to make it bigger in Tests than those who shy away from committing to this format.

“We will give opportunities to only those who are hungry,” said Rohit after India won the fourth Test in Ranchi. “There's a point in playing those who don't have hunger.”

"I don't see anyone in the team here who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and also those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you don't utilise them, they go away," Rohit further asserted.

Meanwhile, Rohit’s remarks have come at a time in Indian cricket when several centrally contracted players – fit and available for selection, opted against featuring for their respective state teams in the Ranji Trophy, with their inclination being towards keeping themselves fit for the Indian Premier League (IPL), whose latest edition begins on March 22 in Chennai.

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer are two names making headlines for the wrong reasons lately, mainly for disobeying clear directives from the BCCI to play the Ranji Trophy for their respective states.

While both continued to remain silent and overlook BCCI’s warnings, they, alongside Hardik Pandya - another ace India cricketer who has been away from Tests since last playing in this format in 2018, are featuring in a local tournament (DY Patil T20 Cup) in Navi Mumbai ahead of the IPL 2024.

IPL is good, but Tests are toughest

Having succeeded at IPL and Test cricket, Rohit knows what Tests do to a cricketer and how tough a format it is.

Speaking on their comparison, Rohit said IPL is a great product for fun and entertainment, but Tests is the format that brings the best out of a player.

"IPL is a very good format for us, but this is the toughest format and difficult to excel. You have to work hard to win...the last three wins didn't come easy, bowlers had to do long spells, batsmen had to grind it out. It's tough," Rohit said of IPL.

Meanwhile, Rohit is no longer the captain of Mumbai Indians as the franchise has picked Hardik Pandya in his place ahead of the upcoming season.

IND v ENG: There’s no point in playing those who are not hungry to succeed in Tests, says Rohit Sharma

England's Joe Root overtook former skipper Alastair Cook for most fifty-plus scores in Test cricket for his country. Root now has 91 50+ scores in Test cricket for England including 60 fifties and 31 centuries - one more than Cook's 90 which includes 57 fifties 33 hundreds. Root reached the milestone during his century in the first innings of fourth Test against India in Ranchi.

The Englishman had scored 122 not out as his team managed 353 in the first innings. Root's innings garnered much appreciation as he played juxtaposed of England's ultra-aggressive Bazball approach. The batter had coped a lot of criticism for playing 'out of character' in the first three Tests, especially in the third Test in Rajkot when he got out playing a reverse ramp shot.

Player of the match Dhruv Jurel played a handy knock of 39 not out in second innings to go with is 90 in first innings and added 72 runs with Gill (52 not out) as India India achieved the 192-run target with five wickets in hand shortly before tea on day 4 (Feb 26). England did manage to give India a bit of scare with three wickets in the first session and two post lunch but the effort fell short in the end.

IND vs ENG: Joe Root goes past Alastair Cook for most fifty-plus scores for England in Tests

India wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel said he and Shubman Gill approached the 192-run chase in set of 10 runs each against England on day 4 (Feb 26) to win the match in Ranchi. Jurel was adjudged Player of the Match in India's five-wicket win for his 129 runs including a crucial 90 in the first innings. The debutant also played a handy knock of 39 not out in second innings and added 72 runs with Gill (52 not out) as India took a unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

"Gill and I were discussing about making small tasks. To approach the chase in sets of 10 runs each," Jurel told broadcasters after the match.

India started the day on a confident note with skipper Rohit Sharma (55) looking in his elements and constantly guiding his in-form partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (37). The duo added 84 for the opening stand but Joe Root, Shoaib Bashir (who took a five-fer in the first innings) and Tom Hartley made use of the turn and low bounce on offer to dent India.

Jurel came to the crease after England took two wickets in two balls post lunch to leave India at 120/5. The wicketkeeper, just like in first innings, remain composed and took the team home with Gill.

"Whatever the situation demands, I want to do that. In our 1st innings, I thought the more runs I score now, the fewer runs we would have to in our 2nd innings," said Jurel.

Speaking about his knock in first innings, which included a 76-run eighth-wicket stand with spinner Kuldeep Yadav (28), Jurel said: "Our wickets were falling, and I was batting with lower-order batters, but we got partnerships with them. So they deserve some credit too. Focus was on seeing the ball, not the bowler."

Notably, this was the first time when India won a contest chasing over 150 at home since early 2013 (versus Australia -- chasing 155). The fifth and final Test will commence in Dharamsala on March 7.

Several top batters across different eras have made the cut, but it’s the former England captain who tops the list. Watch to know more!

Players to Hit Most Test Hundreds against India

England's young spinner Shoaib Bashir believes that they have a chance to be 'heroes' on day 4 (Feb 26) of the ongoing fourth Test against India in Ranchi. Bashir's comments came after Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal wiped off almost a quarter of 192-run target England set for them. The reason behind Bashir's confidence comes from the performance of India spinners, especially Ravi Ashwin who took a five-for in England's second innings.

“We saw how [Ravichandran] Ashwin and [Ravindra] Jadeja bowled on that wicket and we take huge confidence from that. I used to watch these guys when I was a bit younger and they’re world-class spinners. We know us two lads are up against a world-class [team] but we’ve got a chance to be heroes,” said Bashir after the end of play on day 3 (Feb 25).

It was Ravi Ashwin who started the downfall of England in the second session of the day on February 25. Ashwin (5/51) and Kuldeep Yadav (4/22) shared nine English wickets between them to bowl out England for 145 runs in the second innings shortly before stumps on Sunday.

Such was the dominance of Indian spinners that they bowled three twin-wicket overs in the day to mark a sensational turnaround in the match. With India at 40/0 and needing just 152 runs more to win the match and the series, Bashir and England's other spinner, Tom Hartley, will have to create magic for sure.

"I know tomorrow I have a job to do and me and Tommy are really excited for the challenge," Bashir acknowledged the task.

The 20-year-old was also the lone shining point for his team on day 3 as he became the second youngest England spinner to take a five-wicket haul in Tests. Bashir pinned India's debutant Akash Deep LBW to add to his four-for on day 2 and finished with the figures of 5/119 as India were bowled out for 307 in first innings, conceding a lead of 46 runs.

Ashwin's tactics worked as he took his record-equalling 35th five-wicket haul in Tests - joint most for India along side former skipper Anil Kumble. Thanks to Ashwin's exploits, England were bowled out for 145 runs in their second innings, setting India a target of 192 to win the match and the series.

"Enjoyed bowling with the new ball. I put my hand up. Enjoyed bowling with a bit more speed. Had to rewire the way I think about the game. Sometimes when I come here I find there's not as much bite. Had to go a lot of side spin and hammer into the pitch. Didn't want to give extra runs because we're chasing last," said Ashwin after the day's play.

IND vs ENG, 4th Test Day 3: India need 152 runs to win series after Ashwin, Kuldeep spin out England cheaply

Former India skipper Anil Kumble has praised England spinner Shoaib Bashir for his four-for on day 2 (Feb 24) of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi. Bashir took wickets of Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal. His exploits made sure India (219/7) are well behind in the match - 134 runs to be exact after the end of play on Saturday.

“He's been very impressive. The kind of lines he bowled as an off-spinner, he's kept it outside of the right-hander's eye-line. Very few off-spinners bowl from over the stumps to right-handers these days but he's been very consistent,” said Kumble on Jio Cinema after the stumps on day 2.

“He's got the pace right on this surface. And look at that length, it's fantastic to see that almost 90 per cent is in the productive area where the odd ball will jump. The beehive is perfect for an off-spinner,” Kumble added.

Kumble also revealed how Bashir was selected for India tour despite very little experience and praised the England management for taking a bet on the young spinner.

“Credit to England management for taking a punt on Bashir. What I understand is that Sir Alastair Cook was batting against Bashir and some 20 balls that Ben Stokes saw, prompted him to get him on tour to India,” noted Kumble.

Dhruv Jurel (30) and spinner Kuldeep Yadav (17) were on the crease and have added unbeaten 42 runs for the eighth wicket to frustrate England who were looking set to get a big lead after the hosts were 177/7.

Earlier, England started from their overnight score of 302/7 with Ollie Robinson and Joe Root on the crease. The duo added 102 runs for the eight wicket before Robinson, who magnificent scored 58, was taken out by Jadeja. England's next two wickets fell cheaply but Joe Root stayed unbeaten on 122 on the other end.

IND vs ENG, 4th Test Day 2: Bashir's four-for put England ahead as India trail by 134 runs in 1st Innings

Ravindra Jadeja has always been a fantastic spinner for India but over the years, especially in last six, he has come of age as a batter as well. His improved abilities with bat since 2017 have not only allowed the side to include an extra bowler in Tests but given India much needed balance at number seven as well.

Having some great years behind him with bat and experience of 70 Tests also allow India to send him up the order if the situation demands - like in currently ongoing Test series against England at home. With Virat Kohli out, KL Rahul injured and Shreyas dropped, he was sent at number five in the third Test and scored a magnificent century - bringing India back from the 33/3 by adding 204 runs with skipper Rohit Sharma.

Overall, Jadeja now has 3,000+ runs in Tests to go with his 250+ wickets - only the third Indian to achieve the feat after Kapil Dev and Ravi Ashwin. With Jadeja becoming a formidable batter and complete all-rounder, lets have a look at his years in Test cricket and how he's now the perfect all-rounder for India:

From 2012-2014

In the first three years since he made the debut in 2012, Jadeja played in 12 games but could manage only 364 runs in 19 innings at an average of just 21. Jadeja only managed just one fifty in first three years of his debut - but his bowling kept him in the team. Jadeja the bowler took 45 wickets in the first 12 games including two five-wicket hauls.

From 2015-2016

In the next three years, Jadeja played 23 Tests - almost double of what he played in his first three years. The southpaw showed much improved version of him with the bat - scoring 812 runs in 33 innings at an average of 35. He also managed to hit seven fifties but a Test hundred still eluded him.

As for his bowling, he grew leaps and bounds taking 120 wickets in 23 games including seven five-wickets hauls and one 10-wicket haul.

From 2018-2020

Since 2018, Jadeja showed a lot of promise with the bat - offering the balance team needed in the batting department lower down the order. In 2018 he scored the first Test century as well - scoring 100 not out against West Indies in Rajkot. Overall, the all-rounder scored 750 runs in 20 innings of 15 Tests from 2018 to 2020 at a stunning average of 53.5. He also managed to score seven fifties along side a hundred in the same period.

In the bowling department, he took 51 wickets in 29 innings but didn't take a five-wicket haul in the period.

From 2021-2023

Jadeja had a bit of dip in form but still contributed more than handy runs in 17 Tests from 2021 to 2023. He scored 878 runs in the period at an average of 38 with four fifties and two hundreds. In 2022, he also scored his highest score of 175 not out against Sri Lanka at number 7 - the highest for India at that position.

As for his bowling, the all-rounder picked 59 wickets with three five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul and a best of 7/42 in an innings.

Year 2024

This year, Jadeja has started with a bang, scoring a fifty and a hundred in three innings of two Tests he has played. In total, he has scored 201 runs at an average of 50 with a best of 112 against England in Rajkot. In bowling, Jadeja had managed 12 wickets including a five-wicket haul on day 4 of the recently-concluded Rajkot Test against England to help India win by 434 runs.

Talking about his Player of the Match performance of a century and seven wickets in Rajkot, Jadeja said: "We were in a difficult situation, looked to back my strengths, play my shots. Not be too conscious, just watch the ball and play the ball. Batting first, the ball comes on nicely. Once we won the toss, this is what we wanted - bat first, bowl second. You won't get easy wickets [on this surface] you have to work hard. Need to bowl in good areas, can't just bowl and get wickets."

The performances put in by Jadeja over the years have also helped in his rise in ranking as he sits atop the chart of Men's Test all-rounders in ICC's list. In ODIs too, he is at the 10th place - being the only Indian in Top 10.

Jadeja has been a crucial player over the years for India with bowling more than the bat. His recent exploits while batting and the sword celebration after that, however, are becoming a more common sight than earlier - making him the perfect all-rounder for India who is capable to bat lower down the order and take wickets as well.

Explained: How rise of Ravindra Jadeja with the bat has made him the perfect Test all-rounder for India

Former South Africa batter AB de Villiers has blamed England's Bazball approach for Joe Root's dip in form. de Villiers made the comments as Root is visibly struggling to score runs in the ongoing five-Test series in India. The England batter, who has nearly 11,500 Test runs to his name, has managed to score only 77 runs in six innings of three games. Root being out of form has definitely played a part in England being 1-2 down in the series with two more games left to play.

"When I played against him (Root), I felt he was one of the best Test batters I have ever played against. But that has changed, and it's because of Bazball. I know it's a big statement but the ones that you find hardest to play against in Test match cricket are the ones who are hardest to get out. Root was especially criticised for getting out on a reverse scoop on day three of the third Test. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan also want Root to play his natural game and not Bazball.

"The batsmen look like they only have one way to play. They are in fifth gear from ball one. I don't mind some of them playing like that because they are better for it. But Joe Root should forget it. He has 10,000 Test runs playing like Joe Root. He doesn't need to be a Bazballer," Vaughan had written in his column for The Telegraph after England's loss in the third Test.

England won the first match of the series by 28 runs in Hyderabad but lost next two, that is, in Vizag by 106 runs and in Rajkot by 434 runs. The fourth Test will be played from Friday (Feb 23) in Ranchi.

And now he is getting out on reverse sweeps and kind of blowing out of his norm. I don't like that," de Villiers said on his YouTube channel. India batter Shubman Gill says that pacers have been the difference in the ongoing five-Test series against England. Gill's comments came ahead of the fourth Test in Ranchi which starts Friday (Feb 23). After three matches, India are 2-1 up but they have rested their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the Ranchi game. Bumrah has taken 17 wickets in the series so far - the most for both teams. Gill acknowledged Bumrah as the leader of the pack and said that Mohammed Siraj had done well too.

"Our fast bowlers have been brilliant in the series and that has been the difference between the two sides. Bumrah is the leader of our pace attack, but I think the way Mohammad Siraj has bowled, especially in the last innings of the Rajkot Test match (has been great). He has experience in Indian conditions," Gill said in the press conference on Wednesday (Feb 21) ahead of the Ranchi Test.

Notably, Siraj had played a crucial role in wrapping up England's first innings in Rajkot with a four-for on a rather unhelpful pitch. With the BCCI deciding to rest Bumrah for the fourth Test, the onus will definitely on Siraj to lead the pace department.

Injured KL Rahul out of Ranchi Test

India batter KL Rahul has been ruled out of the fourth Test against England. Rahul's participation in the final match of the five-Test series, which starts on March 7 in Dharamsala, is also subject to fitness. "KL Rahul is ruled out of the 4th Test. His participation in the final Test match in Dharamsala is subject to fitness," read the BCCI statement.

In place of Rahul, Sarfaraz, who scored 62 and 68 in both the innings of his debut match in Rajkot, is expected to keep his place while Patidar, who managed just five runs across two innings, is more likely to make a place in playing XI.

IND vs ENG: 'Pacers the difference between two sides,' says India batter Shubman Gill ahead of Ranchi Test

England are considering to bring back pacer Ollie Robinson for the fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series against India. The Test starts on Friday (Feb 23) in Ranchi and England, who are 1-2 down in the series, would be hoping to get a win or a draw to stay alive in the series. Robinson, who is yet to play a Test in the series, is expected to replace express pacer Mark Wood, who has featured in the first and the third Tests.

The reasoning behind recalling Robinson is the balance England seek with skipper Ben Stokes still not confirmed to bowl. England vice-captain Ollie Pope, however, said that they'll take the final decision once the Indian team takes a look at the pitch which has a 'lot of cracks.'

"There's a lot of cracks," Poe said. "It's very platey, and they've just wetted it as well, which generally dries it up. It doesn't necessarily look like a belting wicket at the moment. It kind of looks like one half is good, and then there are a lot of platey cracks. That's how we see it at the minute. I think we will see what happens tomorrow after the Indian team has looked at the wicket, then make a decision from there."

"At the minute, it looks like batting from the far end, it's outside the right-hander's off stump and then from this end, the left-hander's off-stump. It just looks like it's down the wicket, it's kind of plated on one side and then the other side looks like a pretty good wicket," he added.

England might also go with three spinners in Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir if Stokes decides to bowl, offering much needed flexibility to the English side.

IND vs ENG: England pacer Ollie Robinson's recall on cards for fourth Test as visitors aim to stay alive

Yashasvi Jaiswal has said that it is hard growing up in India and that's why he tries to make it count every time he's on the crease. He made the comments after playing a pivotal role with a double hundred in India's 434-run win in the third Test against England on February 18. The century was Jaiswal's second in two matches, having scored 209 in second Test of the ongoing five-match series.

"In India, when you grow up, you work really hard for each and everything. Even when getting the bus you have to work really hard to get on the bus. You have to work really hard to get to the train and auto and everything and I have done that since my childhood and I know how important every innings is and that's why I work hard in my [practice] sessions and every innings counts for me and my team,” Jaiswal said on broadcast post-match.

“It's kind of hard, Test cricket, I guess. So, I just make sure that if I'm there, I need to make sure in my mind that I will give my 100%,” he added.

During his innings, Jaiswal broke multiple records including hitting most sixes in a Test innings for India. The southpaw hit 12 sixes in his innings of 214 not out - the joint most in Test cricket along side Pakistan's Wasim Akram and the most for India.

He has hit 22 sixes in three Tests of the ongoing series - most for India in a bilateral series. The batter has also scored three centuries so far in his short career and all of them have been 150-plus. He's the fifth batter in the world and first from India to convert his first three centuries into 150 or more.

IND vs ENG: 'Test cricket is hard,' says India's Yashasvi Jaiswal after hitting 214 not out in Rajkot Test

Former England skipper Michael Atherton has opined that India youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal is a modern T20 batter who has the technique to play Test cricket. Atherton made the comments as Jaiswal scored 214 not out on day 4 (Feb 18) of the Rajkot Test which India won by 434 runs. The double ton was Jaiswal's second in consecutive games, having already scored 209 in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series against England.

"Fantastic young player. Haven't seen much of him in Test match cricket. England fans didn't see much of him before the series but now they've seen enough to know that he's a special young talent. Very hungry for runs. All three of his hundreds are over 150 - two of them doubles. He smacks the ball a long way; a powerfully built lad. He's a modern T20 player who's adapting to Test cricket and has the technique to do it," Atherton said on Sky Sports.

The former English skipper also acknowledged that Jaiswal is a dangerous player for England, especially after he hit England great James Anderson for three consecutive sixes on the way to his double ton in Rajkot.

"When he gets in, he has all the shots. Jimmy Anderson is rarely treated with such disdain like he was this afternoon when he got taken for those three consecutive sixes. So he's a very dangerous player and England need to work out a way to get him early if they can," Atherton added.

Thanks to Jaiswal's 214, India declared their second innings on 430/4 shortly before tea on day 4. Ravindra Jadeja, who had already scored a hundred in India's first innings, then took a five-for as England were bowled out for a paltry 122.

The hosts now lead the series 2-1 with two more Tests left to play.
